It may be cold outside, but it’s warm and cozy in the library—just the perfect setting to create a friendly snowman for your home. To complete the project, participants will need to bring 4 empty cans of the same size. All other items will be provided.

Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by CHI Saint Joseph Health. Physician Assistant Kathy Noble will present a program focusing on anxiety and depression. She will touch on concerns such as: the symptoms, causes, risk factors, and where to go to get help in relation to anxiety and depression.

Tuesday, January 14th • 6-7pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED Come learn about our native wildlife with KY Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Rehabilitator Tonya Poindexter Vaughn. She’ll be bringing her adorable sidekick Ginny, a gentle, real-life possum, to educate people of all ages and discuss bizarre facts and mind-blowing myths related to wildlife. She’ll also demonstrate how to build a small, affordable, outdoor winter shelter to protect your wild, furry friends during this cold season!

Matinee Movie: The Peanut Butter Falcon Wednesday, January 15th • 1:30-3:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION APPRECIATED
Come for an afternoon of adventure! This month’s film is set in the world of a modern Mark Twain that begins when Zak, a young man with Down’s Syndrome, runs away from the nursing home where he lives to chase his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. A small-time outlaw and a kind nursing home employee join Zak on his journey. The film is rated PG-13.
Holiday Hours: The library will be closing at 5pm on Tuesday, December 31st and then closed on Wednesday, January 1st in observance of New Years.
Murder by the Book
Thursday, January 16th • 6-7pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION The book we’ll be reading this month is The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter. Two girls are forced into the woods at gunpoint. One runs for her life. One is left behind. The brutal attack left a dead mother, a devastated father, and a family torn apart by the secrets from that terrible night. Twenty-eight years later a shocking tragedy returns to the same town and the crime that destroyed this family won’t stay buried forever.

Let’s Talk About Trees
Tuesday, January 21st • 6-7pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED Joey Hampton, an ISA Certified Arborist and ISA Certified Tree Worker Climber Specialist, will be at the library to discuss the importance of trees in our environment. Topics include the benefits of trees, tree selection, planting the right tree in the right location, and proper tree care to insure its long term health.

Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.

Discover what happens during a paranormal investigation, examine equipment, see evidence, and ask the experts during this interactive program. LPRS uses a mix of science, technology, knowledge, and tools to examine a location from all angles, which enables a better understanding not only of the group, but also the clients they serve.

Start the new year off with a fantastic concert featuring Bourbon Branch, who has gained a regional following and a reputation for musicianship and songwriting. With several vocalists, flourishing keyboards, and a powerful rhythm section, Bourbon Branch can jump in and out of almost any genre including Motown, blues, southern rock, and classic country.

Join us to explore how communication changes when someone is living with Alzheimer’s, learn how to interpret the verbal and behavioral communication, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.

This month we’ll be discussing the death of Rebecca Zahau, who was found dead at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado, California. She lived there with her boyfriend Jonah Shacknai, a millionaire and the CEO of Medicis Pharmaceutical. Zahau’s death occurred only two days after Shacknai’s 6-year-old son Max took a fatal fall from a staircase in the same beachfront mansion. The mysterious events around her death, including how she was found, have led this case to be on TV shows and podcasts. Suggested Watching: Death at the Mansion: Rebecca Zahau.

1968: A Folsom Redemption Now - January 7th
Celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of a landmark event, 1968: A Folsom Redemption is a collection of photographs and memories of two journalists lucky enough to be among a handful of eyewitnesses to the historic Johnny Cash concerts at Folsom Prison. This candid and personal photography exhibition covers a critical juncture in the career of Johnny Cash, one of the twentieth century’s most beloved performers.
TECHNOLOGY & CAREER WORKSHOPS The Laurel County Public Library offers a wide range of technology classes to help you develop and improve the skills that are so important in the digital age. With different topics being taught each month, a knowledgeable staff, and hands-on learning, there’s sure to be something we can help you with. Jacob discovers clues to a mystery and stumbles upon Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. However the mystery is deeper than he had thought, as he gets to know the residents and learn about their special powers. Jacob discovers that only his own special peculiarity can save his new friends.

As of December 1st, 2019 all current overdue* fines have been removed from all library cards! It’s time to come back to the library so everyone can once again enjoy our collection of 130,000 books, 10,300 DVDs, 245,000 albums, 93,000 audiobooks, 364,000 e-books, and much more! *Replacement costs of lost/damaged items not included in fine waiver. Fines charged after 1/1/20 are not included in this fine waiver.
