Ted Yoder: An Evening of Stories and Songs Thursday, April 4th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION RTEC

Ted’s easy going personality and passionate commitment to his art make him a natural star. With a performance style known as “Yoderizing,” you’ll be amazed that one wooden stringed instrument can sound like a rock band or an entire symphony orchestra. You’ll enjoy popular songs like Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing,” The Beatles “Eleanor Rigby,” and classics such as “Amazing Grace.” This concert is proudly sponsored by PNC Bank and the Laurel County Public Library.

Monday, April 8th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION Similar to the Western game of rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. Experienced players, see if the tiles fall your way during a fun evening of play. If you’ve never played, please contact us before attending.


Gardening is Murder with Author: Neal Sanders

Tuesday, April 9th • 10-11am Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED RTEC Neal Sanders will give a talk that illustrates a “spouse’s point of view” on gardening. The presentation is filled with humor and insight from someone who gardens not from an abiding love of horticulture, but rather for love of a spouse. Mr. Sanders is the author of five mysteries, several of them with garden club themes.

Census 2020: Counting on Kentucky Tuesday, April 16th • 6-7pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED RTEC

Michelle L. Elison, KY Partnership Specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau, will discuss ways to partner with the Census Bureau to ensure a complete and accurate count for Laurel County and KY in 2020. She’ll provide an overview of what preparations have been made, an operational time-line, and information about the thousands of good-paying, work-from-home Census jobs that will be available across the state.

Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevin is both a funny and serious story of five women affected by a political scandal and what happens when the fifteen minutes of fame are up.

This month we’ll be discussing the case of Brookelyn Farthing who was last seen at a home in Berea, KY in the early morning hours of June 22, 2013. Shortly before she disappeared, she sent several texts indicating that she was scared. That morning, the home where she was last seen suspiciously caught fire.

Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale Preview Sale for Friends Members Only

If you’re a current member of the Friends of the Laurel County Public Library, don’t miss the special preview of the Spring Book Sale. There’s a great selection of gently used books, magazines, DVDs, audiobooks, and more. If you aren’t a member and would like to be, you can join before you enter the sale, or by calling Susan at 864-5759.

Saturday is the final day of the Friends Spring Book Sale. During this one day only special sale, bags will be provided and each full bag is only $3. Come early for the best selection!

The Everly Brothers Experience featuring The Zmed Brothers Thursday, April 18th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION RTEC

Join us as we welcome the Zmed Brothers and watch as they bring a genuine and youthful Everly Brothers Experience to our stage. Zachary and Dylan recreate the intimate harmonies that were ever present in the music created by Don and Phil Everly. The Zmed Brothers will take you through classics that inspired legends like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Simon and Garfunkel, The Kinks and many more. This concert is proudly sponsored by PNC Bank and the Laurel County Public Library.

Bite Size Learning: Wound Care

Murder by the Book

(Deadline: Noon on April 15th.)

This month’s mystery is Amagansett by Mark Mills. The plot revolves around the small town where little has changed in the three centuries since white settlers drove the Montaukett Indians from the land. But for Conrad Labarde, and his fellow fisherman Rollo Kemp, this stability is shattered when a New York socialite turns up dead in their nets and police chief Tom Hollis is called in to investigate.

Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by CHI Saint Joseph Health. Kim Cesario, APRN, will discuss the CHI Saint Joseph Health Wound Care Center that can provide a variety of skilled services and customized treatments such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy and negative pressure wound therapy. Topics will include wound care for diabetic foot and pressure ulcers, bone infection, and other hard to treat wounds.

The library is featuring this year’s Oscar winning Best Picture that stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. It chronicles the journey of an Italian-American bouncer who becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour through the 1960s American South.

If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, then come to the library for this month’s meeting. Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.


CVNB Art Show Opening and Reception Thursday, April 25th • 5-7pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

Be the first to discover who the winners of the 2019 CVNB Art Show are by attending the opening reception and then viewing the gallery of creative art work by area youth and adults. This event is free and open to the public.

TECHNOLOGY CLASSES The Laurel County Public Library offers a wide range of technology classes to help you develop and improve the skills that are so important in the digital age. With different topics being taught each month, a knowledgeable staff, and hands-on learning, there’s sure to be something we can help you with. Participants must have a library card, valid email address, and be 18+ to participate.

Resume Basics Homestead Rescue with the Rains Family Tuesday, April 30th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED

The Discovery Channel’s “Homestead Rescue” series showcases the most desperate homesteads across America. The show’s experts utilize their experience and ingenuity to help families solve the issues their homesteads face. Local residents Donna and Jeremy Rains were featured during the first episode of 2019. Toxic land plagued their homestead as well as other serious issues. The “Homestead Rescue” team arrived on location to provide solutions to these problems. During tonight’s program, the Rains’ segment on “Homestead Rescue” will be shown and the family will be here to discuss their experiences filming the show and answer questions from the audience about homesteading.

Design and decorate a bandanna you’ll go bananas for! Choose from a variety of paint and fabric markers to make this colorful creation.

PlayHouse THEATRICAL SERIES

Ever since I was just a kid, I have dreamed of becoming an astronaut. Of not just looking at the moon through my telescope or watching movies about what it might be like, but actually discovering it for myself. And guess what? My dream might actually be possible! The Space Race is on and I’m racing to be a part of it. My name is Scott Gibson and I will touch the stars by joining the Apollo Program team. This performance is sponsored by Cumberland Valley National Bank and the Laurel County Public Library.

Babygarten: Designed for children up to age 3, this program provides a basic understanding of child development, while providing an engaging time for children and caregivers! Ready to Read: This interactive storytime is designed for preschool aged children, and focuses on building cognitive, social, physical, and early literacy skills. Readers are Leaders: Geared for school aged students, this program provides a time to discuss books, play games, and participate in exciting hands-on activities.

Around the Library You’re in for a treat if you’ve not visited the children’s department lately! We’ve added some exciting and helpful things to make your library experience the best it can be. Meet our self-checkout kiosk named “Booker.” Booker got a fun and friendly new outfit with a cute monster theme. You’ll love having Booker around for quick and easy checkouts. Things are really cooking with our new kitchen playset and block table that keeps little hands busy before finding the perfect books to take home. The fun doesn’t stop there because we now offer Launchpad Tablets that you can take home. These engaging tablets are custom curated and pre-loaded with high-quality, ad-free apps. This means your little one can enjoy a focused and educational learning experience. Keep your eyes peeled in the upcoming months as we continue to offer new additions to your library!
