The Church Sisters: LIVE in Concert Friday, November 1st • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

The Church Sisters’ mesmerizing music chronicles their childhood with a haunting, bluegrass twist. Their roots extend through bluegrass and gospel, performing alongside legendary acts from a young age. The duo is featured on Orthophonic Joy: The 1927 Bristol Sessions Revisited, which was co-produced by Grammy Award-winner and mentor, Carl Jackson. The Church Sisters delivered with “Where We’ll Never Grow Old,” one of the tracks on the two-disc project that also features legendary artists Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton.

Thanksgiving Centerpiece Workshop

Fabulous Flavors of Fall

Company is coming and it’s time to get the table ready. We have a quick solution to this decorating dilemma. Register for this fun workshop where participants will make a Thanksgiving centerpiece that’s perfect for holiday festivities.

Fall is in the air and Kristina McFeeters will be sharing some delicious dishes, perfect for your fall and holiday meals. Kristina will demonstrate recipes that feature flavors such as sweet potatoes and squash. Tastings will be available for all participants.

Live in Concert: My Brother’s Keeper Friday, November 15th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

With original music that draws inspiration from bluegrass, rock, and everything in between, My Brother’s Keeper strives to be unique as well as entertaining. The band consists of brothers Benjamin, Titus, and Joshua Luckhaupt and is completed by Wyatt “Sawmill” Murray. MBK is known for its contemporary sound, beautiful harmony, energetic live shows, creative musicianship, and positive lyrics, making the concert suitable for music lovers of all ages.

Cumberland Gallery Photography Show Thursday, November 7th • 5-7pm (Reception) November 8th-10th (Public Viewing) Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

Cumberland Valley National Bank and the Laurel County Public Library are pleased to be co-sponsoring the 2019 Cumberland Gallery Photography Show for adults and youth. Photographers and the general public are encouraged to attend the opening reception for the 2019 CVNB Photography Show, when the category winners and Best of Show winner will be revealed. Entries will be taken during regular library hours from Monday, October 28th through Tuesday, November 5th. Entries will not be accepted after 8pm on Tuesday, November 5th. Application forms will be available at CVNB locations and at the Laurel County Public Library.

You’ll discover new favorites, explore different genres, and share thoughts about a monthly selection. This month’s selection is The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton.

The London Community Orchestra Presents: An Evening of Music

Bite Size Learning: Oh No, Not Shingles! Wednesday, November 20th • 12-1pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED (Deadline: November 18th at noon)

Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by CHI Saint Joseph Health. Robin House of CHI Saint Joseph Health’s Primary Care practice will be presenting a program focusing on shingles. Topics will include a definition and its cause, symptoms and stages, methods to prevent contracting it, and treatment recommendations.

To celebrate the London Community Orchestra and to promote the upcoming season, several musicians from the orchestra will present a wonderful evening of music. This informal program, featuring a variety of musical styles, will be performed by orchestra members as soloists and in small groups.

Mah Jongg

Tuesday, November 19th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Kentucky Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED Get in on the fun during this month’s Mah Jongg session. Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation that involves a degree of chance. This mentally challenging game can assist in building and strengthening social networks, plus providing an evening of entertainment.

True Crime Cases: The Co-Ed Killer Tuesday, November 19th • 6-7pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED

This month we’ll be discussing Ed Kemper, also known as the Co-Ed Killer. Ed’s recorded interviews with the FBI’s behavioral unit were featured on Netflix’s hit show Mindhunter. Kemper murdered 10 people including his paternal grandparents and mother. We’ll be outlining his crimes and discussing how his interviews helped change the way serial killers are now profiled.

Matinee Movie: Grumpy Old Men

Wednesday, November 20th • 1:30-3:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION APPRECIATED Visit the library for an afternoon of fun and laughter! This month we’ll be showing the classic comedy Grumpy Old Men. The movie is about a lifelong feud between two neighbors that only gets worse when a new female neighbor moves across the street. The film stars veteran actors, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Ann-Margaret, and Burgess Meredith. This film is rated PG-13.

Special Adult Patrons: Germ Prevention Thursday, November 21st • 1-2pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Learn how to stop the spread of germs this cold and flu season during this germ prevention workshop. Tyler Caldwell, from the Laurel County Health Department, will teach proper hand washing, discuss how germs are spread, and how to avoid illness. This interactive workshop includes activities and information to help keep you well this fall and winter.

Murder by the Book

Thursday, November 21st • 6-7pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION This month we’ll be reading Girl on Ice by Robert Bryndza. When a young boy discovers the body of a woman beneath a thick sheet of ice in a South London park’s pond, Detective Erika Foster is called in to lead the murder investigation. The victim appeared to have the perfect life – what dark secrets is the girl in the ice hiding?

Writers’ Ink

Monday, November 25th • 4-5pm Location: Kentucky Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, then come to the Laurel County Public Library for this month’s writers’ group meeting.

OUTREACH SERVICES As the weather changes it makes it more difficult for some patrons to come to the library. Do you know someone with mobility or transportation issues who would enjoy a library delivery or bookmobile stop? Send them our way! After a simple application process, we’ll work them into our routes as soon as possible and they’ll enjoy getting library materials every two weeks from our bookmobile staff.

Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.

TECHNOLOGY & CAREER WORKSHOPS The Laurel County Public Library offers a wide range of technology classes to help you develop and improve the skills that are so important in the digital age. With different topics being taught each month, a knowledgeable staff, and hands-on learning, there’s sure to be something we can help you with. Participants must have a library card, valid email address, and be 18+.

Learn how you can use Microsoft Excel to organize all types of information at home and at work.

Teen Coding

Mad Scientists

Coding is everywhere, from social media apps to cyber-security. Learning to code is a great opportunity and could lead to careers in almost any industry. This month we’ll continue our coding series on art and gaming.

Stand back! We’re going to try science. Science has been used as a way of explaining the process of many activities and life-forming events. Mad Scientists explores science and questions the subject through hands-on techniques and experiments. This month we’ll be exploring the science behind lava lamps.

Alice in Wonderland is coming to the stage. But first, we need another rehearsal. This month we’ll be hosting our second session of practice. If you missed the first session, that’s okay. You can definitely catch up. New members are always welcome to the Performing Arts Club, where the focus is discovering artistic expression and exploring your creativity. If you love acting on stage, then this is definitely a session you don’t want to miss!

Check out this film on the big screen! Enjoy drinks and snacks while you watch this month’s feature. The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos, which wiped out half the universe and fractured their ranks, compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in the grand conclusion to 22 films. This film is rated PG-13.

Storytime With the London Police Dept.

Whoooo loves owls? We think they’re a real hoot! Today we’re all about owls. We’ll read a book about owls and enjoy participating in owl-themed activities. Let’s spend some time learning more about our nighttime friends!

Homeschool Science Fair

Monday, November 18th • 9am-12pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION If you love science, the Homeschool Science Fair is the place for you! There will be four grade categories, Pre K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th and three winners within each category! There will also be an overall winner who will take home the big trophy! All projects will be displayed in the library auditorium for everyone to see on Monday, November 18th. Science Fair set up begins at 9am, and judging starts at 10am. The award ceremony will begin at 12pm. You don’t want to miss this event! Entry forms are available in the children’s department.

Through thick and thin, this story shows us how much care it takes to hold on to special friends, and how important it is to sometimes let those things go. With endearing costumes and unforgettable characters, the Velveteen Rabbit is sure to appeal to your young audience. Based on the classic tale by Margery Williams Bianco, this show examines what it means to love and what it means to be real.

Children’s Saturday Movie: Detective Pikachu Saturday, November 16th • 10am-12pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his son to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, wisecracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together they join forces to unravel the tangled mystery. This film is rated PG.
