The Great American Read Book Series: Session 1 Thursday, September 6th • 6-7:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED
The Great American Read is designed to get the country reading and talking about books. From the 100 suggested titles, this series will explore and discuss books representing three different genres.
Fall Diabetes Self-Management Series
September 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED Registered Dietitian Lynnett Renner from the Laurel County Health Department will lead the four-part selfmanagement series that has a curriculum recognized by the American Diabetes Association and the Centers for Disease Control. Registration includes all four classes and participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion. •
Session 1 (Sept. 4th): Focuses on what diabetes is, high and low blood sugar, and acute complications.

Session 2 (Sept. 11th): We’ll go into detail about the monitoring and management of blood sugar, as well as what to do when you have sick days.
•
Session 3 (Sept. 18th): Being prepared when traveling, coping with diabetes, and reducing risks.
•
Session 4 (Sept. 25th): Information concerning medications and alternatives for diabetics.
Rain Gutter Races for Special Adults Wednesday, September 5th • 1-2pm Location: Auditorium Entrance REGISTRATION REQUIRED
Race your boat to the finish line in the Rain Gutter Races! Boats will be placed in water filled rain gutters and will sail along by squirting them with a water bottle. Be sure to dress for the possibility of getting wet during this fun outdoor game. Participants’ caregivers need to be present. For ages 16 and older.
University of the Cumberlands Professor Kathy Fish will discuss Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women from the classic genre during Session 1. Prior to each session, a limited number of books will be available for checkout at the Circulation Desk while supplies last.
Mah Jongg
Monday, September 10th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION Similar to the Western game of rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. Experienced players, see if the tiles fall your way during a fun evening of play. If you’ve never played, please contact us before attending.

Tuesday, September 11th • 6:30-7:30pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION We’ll be discussing The Hamilton Affair by Elizabeth Cobbs. This historical fiction tells of the love between Alexander Hamilton, an American revolution hero, and Elizabeth Schuyler, a wealthy socialite and pioneering women’s advocate.
Kaleidoscope Concert Series: Young Heirlooms Friday, September 14th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION
The Young Heirlooms will take you on a nostalgic journey with sentimental, heartfelt, and original songs. Anticipate the timelessness of bygone musical eras and dynamic lyrical themes accompanied by instrumentation that comes with a contemporary kick. This five piece band has the ability to resonate with a wide scope of audiences, giving them a do-not-miss reputation throughout the Midwest. This event is part of our Kaleidoscope Concert Series co-sponsored by PNC Bank and the Laurel County Public Library.
Bite Size Learning: Asthma and Allergies
Wednesday, September 19th • 12-1pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED (Deadline: Sept. 17th) Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by Saint Joseph London KentuckyOne Health. Dr. Jessica Lange, from Saint Joseph London KentuckyOne Health, will be focusing her talk on asthma and allergy issues including their causes, management, and treatment options. A question/answer period will conclude the session.
Job Fair
Wednesday, September 12th • 1-5pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION Attention job seekers! Drop in and meet all kinds of potential employers at our upcoming Job Fair. We’ll have representatives from retail, manufacturing, healthcare, and more! This program is a LEAF project, a joint effort between the library, workforce development, and adult education.
Murder by the Book
Thursday, September 20th • 6-7pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION We’ll be reading Lie in Wait by Eric Rickstad. Detective Sonja Test investigates the case of a teenage girl who is murdered while babysitting for the lead attorney in a high profile trial.

AARP Driver Safety
Writers’ Ink
If you’re 50 or older, you’re eligible to attend this special AARP Driver Safety course taught by Jim Meding. You’ll learn how to adjust your driving for age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time. You’ll also learn some defensive driving techniques and how medications affect your driving. No tests are involved, and you might even get a discount on your car insurance.
Calling all writers! If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, the library writers’ group is perfect for you. Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.

Meet all of your favorite characters along the way! Gain courage with the Cowardly Lion, take heart with the Tin Man, and find your wits with the Scarecrow. Don’t let yourself be caught by the Wicked Witch and her flying monkeys in this fun interactive retelling of the L. Frank Baum classic. This production is part of the Playhouse Theatrical Series sponsored by Cumberland Valley National Bank and presented by our friends at Bright Star Touring Theatre from Asheville, North Carolina.

ON DISPLAY Portraits of Famous African Americans September 13 - September 19th Portraits of Famous African Americans showcases the talent of VSA Kentucky Registry Artist, Michael Dixon. Originally from California, Dixon remembers an art teacher who encouraged him to keep drawing after he completed his first portrait, and years later he is still adding to his body of work. As a recipient of the VSA Kentucky Ron Billings Emerging Artist Award for Artists with Disabilities, Dixon says he simply likes to, “show happiness in the smiles of the people I draw.
Civil War 150 September 20th - October 25th This exhibition explores the Civil War, the most transformative period in US history. Drawing upon letters, personal accounts, and images, Civil War 150 invites Americans to understand how soldiers, presidents, freedmen, and families struggled to address the nature of democracy and citizenship, the human toll of civil war, and the role of a president in wartime.
