We’ll be discussing Defending Jacob by William Landay. In this legal thriller, Assistant DA Andy has a picture-perfect life—until his teenage son is accused of a brutal murder. He believes Jacob is innocent, but the evidence is against him, prompting Andy to wonder how far he’ll go to protect the son he loves.

Mah Jongg

Monday, March 4th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION Similar to the Western game of rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. Experienced players, see if the tiles fall your way during a fun evening of play. If you’ve never played, please contact us before attending.

Spring Diabetes Self-Management

March 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED RTEC Registered Dietitian Lynnett Renner from the Laurel County Health Department will lead the four-part selfmanagement series that has a curriculum recognized by the American Diabetes Association and the Centers for Disease Control. Registration includes all four classes and participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion. Session 1: This session focuses on what diabetes is, high and low blood sugar, and acute complications. Session 2: This session focuses on the monitoring and management of blood sugar as well as what to do when you have sick days. Session 3: This session will address the topics of being prepared when traveling, coping with diabetes, and reducing risks. Session 4: The final session will focus on information concerning medications and alternatives for diabetics.

Quilt Art: Examining the Narrative in KY Quilts Thursday, March 14th • 6-7pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED RTEC

In celebration of the artistry associated with the process and history of the making of quilts, Pearlie Johnson from the Kentucky Humanities Council will discuss 19th century quilts made by black women living and working on slave plantations, traditional quilts made by African American women of the 20th century, and contemporary art quilts made by women of all cultural groups of the 21st century. Her study of quilts in Kentucky is aimed at examining cross-cultural parallels in technique and assemblage, as well as revealing unique designs.

Bite Size Learning: Seasonal Allergies Wednesday, March 20th • 12-1pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED RTEC (Deadline: Noon on March 18th.)

Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by Saint Joseph London KentuckyOne Health. Dr. Jessica Lange from Saint Joseph London KentuckyOne Health will be focusing on Seasonal Allergies and will discuss their causes, management, and treatment options. A question/answer period will conclude the session.

Wednesday Matinee Movie: Instant Family Wednesday, March 20th • 2-4pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION APPRECIATED RTEC Get rid of the winter blues by coming to the library for this PG-13 rated comedy/drama starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne. The storyline involves a couple who finds themselves over their heads when they foster three children.

Tornadoes! A Science Class for our Special Adult Patrons Thursday, March 21st • 1-2pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED RTEC

Learn about tornadoes: what they are, how they form, how they’re classified, and how to stay safe during a storm. Create a tornado in a bottle during this hands on exciting science class. Mr. Jim Bierer, a retired science teacher with over 30 years of teaching experience, will be leading the class. Participants’ caregivers need to be present. For ages 16 and older.

Murder by the Book

Thursday, March 21st • 6-7pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION This month we’ll be reading Dark Tide by Elizabeth Haynes. Genevieve has started a new life aboard her houseboat when a body washes up and to Genevieve’s horror she realizes she knows the victim. Is this death related to her past as a dancer at a private members’ club called The Barclay? Join us and find out.

Writers’ Ink

If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, the library writers’ group is perfect for you. Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.

True Crime Cases

Tuesday, March 26th • 6-7pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED This month we’ll be covering the murder of Elizabeth Short, otherwise known as the Black Dahila. This highly publicized case became famous due to the horrific way Short was murdered and still remains one of the most notorious unsolved crimes in Los Angeles. As always, there will be a blog post going over any information needed before the group meets. Emails with questions or comments are welcome. Library staff member Trish Caudill will facilitate the session.

Perfectly Poe

Thursday, March 28th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED If you’re an Edgar Allan Poe fan you’ll want to join us for an intriguing evening dedicated to studying several of his famous short stories and poems. Eastern Kentucky University English Department lecturer and author Keven McQueen will facilitate the program. Featured readings include: “Tell-Tale Heart,” “Black Cat,” “Cask of Amontillado,” “Annabel Lee,” and “El Dorado.” Copies of the materials to be used will be available at the circulation desk after registration.

Tax-Aide® Schedule

TECHNOLOGY CLASSES The Laurel County Public Library offers a wide range of technology classes to help you develop and improve the skills that are so important in the digital age.

Ride with RTEC!

Free transportation is available for designated programs by calling the library and scheduling what time you’d like to be picked up and brought to the library and what time you’d like to arrive back at home. Your trip to and from the library will be covered so you’ll be on your way to enjoying all the library offers. Look for the RTEC symbol to see which programs qualify for transportation. Transportation for other library services is available as scheduling permits. All arrangements MUST be made 48 hours prior to the time you wish to visit the library to allow for scheduling. Call 864-5759 and provide us with the following: • Name • Address • Telephone number • Number and ages of riders • Pick up time (for home and library) • If wheelchair access is needed • Program you’ll be attending

There’s still time if you’ve not had the opportunity to play a game of Winter Book Bingo. Pick up a bingo card and fill in the spaces by reading. Bring your completed card back to the library for a prize but not before you shout BINGO!

With different topics being taught each month, a knowledgeable staff, and hands-on learning, there’s sure to be something we can help you with. Participants must have a library card, valid email address, and be 18+ to participate.

Customizing Your Resume

Open Mic Night

Friday, March 8th • 5:30-7pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION APPRECIATED RTEC Tonight’s the night for you to show off your talent! We’re hosting the library’s first Teen Open Mic Night where you can perform on the auditorium stage. Regardless of whether your talent is singing, dancing, reading poetry, playing an instrument, or acting out a skit, tonight your star will shine. Perform by yourself or with a friend.

During this workshop we’ll be learning the different ways to tie-dye a t-shirt. Experiment with various techniques and take home a shirt that will be as unique as you.

Book Buzz

Did you know that elephants are considered to be a symbol of good luck? We’ll cut some old magazines into strips and use the pieces to make a good luck elephant.

Homeschool History Fair

Monday, March 18th • 9am-12pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION Love history? The Homeschool History Fair is the place for you! There will be four grade categories. K-2, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, and 9th -12th. There will be three winners within each category, with the overall winner taking home the BIG TROPHY! The overall winner could come from any age category, so be sure to impress the judges! The history fair set up is from 9-10am. Judging will begin at 10am. Participants must be present for judging. The awards ceremony will begin at 12pm. A Homeschool History Fair entry form can be downloaded from the library website, or can be picked up in the children’s department. Entry forms may be turned in the morning of the History Fair.

Pop and Tot Storytime

Monday, March 18th • 6-7pm Location: Community Room NO REGISTRATION Calling all dads, grandfathers, and uncles! Spend an evening with your little one reading some exciting books, singing some fun songs, and getting creative with a hands-on activity. While you’re here take some time to work a puzzle and visit our block table. Be sure to check out some books for the perfect bedtime story!

Homeschool Happenings: Wacky Weather Thursday March 21st • 10:30-11:30am Location: Community Room NO REGISTRATION This month at Homeschool Happenings Jim Bierer, a retired science teacher, will be here to discuss what causes tornadoes, and what we should do to keep safe during a tornado. We’ll also do a fun science experiment and create a tornado in a bottle!

Parents! Did you know that building with LEGO’S enhances fine motor skills? Bring your favorite master builder and take advantage of the library’s LEGO collection. Take home a LEGO book full of fun ideas that will keep building on your child’s imagination.

ON DISPLAY Impressions of Ireland

March 2nd - March 28th

Through his enhanced photography, William J. Ryan offers a fresh and unique experience of the green isles. Rich colors, intriguing characters, and ancient foundations are showcased in thirty-five stunning, large photographs. This exhibit is on loan from the collection at Georgia Southern University.

Babygarten: Designed for children up to age 3, this program provides a basic understanding of child development, while providing an engaging time for children and caregivers! Readers are Leaders: Geared for school aged students, this program provides a time to discuss books, play games, and participate in exciting hands-on activities.
