Book Pumpkin Craft

Soup’s On with Kristina McFeeters

Have fun creating a fall decoration worthy of a best seller list. Recycled books will be used to create a beautiful pumpkin centerpiece. All materials will be provided.

Fall is in the air and what’s better on a cool, crisp night than a bowl of homemade soup and steaming hot cornbread? The program features Kristina McFeeters, owner of Kristina’s Kitchen, a bakery and vegetarian café, who’ll demonstrate a tasty, healthy, homemade soup and cornbread. Tastings will be available for all participants.

Medicare Made Fun!

Bite Size Learning: Infection Control

Are you overwhelmed by all of the Medicare information and misinformation? Tom Potts will help you navigate through the maze of options during this educational workshop. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to get the facts and have a few laughs at the same time.

Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by Saint Joseph London KentuckyOne Health. This month’s program features Gladys Cornn, the Infectious Control Director at Saint Joseph London KentuckyOne Health. Her presentation will include infection control issues such as: prevention and treatment options, and communicable diseases such as hepatitis, shingles, flu, listeria, staph, strep, and many more.

Similar to the Western game of rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. If you’re an experienced player, join us for a fun session of Mah Jongg. In this story of second chances and starting over, newly-divorced Markie becomes the fixer-upper project for nosy neighbor Mrs. Saint, whether she wants to be or not.

Wednesday Matinee Movie: Wonder Wednesday, October 17th • 2-4pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION APPRECIATED

Wonder tells the inspiring story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences, as he is mainstreamed into elementary school for the first time and the struggles his family and community face while discovering their own compassion and acceptance. This film is rated PG.


Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale Preview Sale for Friends Members Only

Bag Day

If you’re a current member of the Friends of the Laurel County Public Library, don’t miss the special preview of the Fall Book Sale. There’s a great selection of gently used books, magazines, DVDs, audiobooks, and more. If you aren’t a member and would like to be, you can join before you enter the sale, or by calling Susan at 864-5759.

Saturday is the final day of the Friends Fall Book Sale. During this one day only special sale, bags will be provided and each full bag is only $3. Come early for the best selection!

Murder by the Book

Thursday, October 18th • 6-7pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION This month’s mystery novel In the Woods by Tana French revolves around Rob and Cassie, a pair of Irish detectives and their investigation of the murder of a twelve-year-old girl. Is it just a coincidence the girl is found in the same woods where Rob’s friends disappeared 20 years earlier?

The Bluegrass Bigfoot

Saturday, October 20th • 11am-12pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED Bigfoot: Fact or Fiction? What do you think? Charlie Raymond, founder of the Kentucky Bigfoot Research Organization, will explore the latest evidence and eyewitness testimonies during an hour long, multimedia presentation. Footprints and hand casts will be on display. This program is suitable for the whole family.

Let’s Scare Up Some Fun: Halloween Activities for our Special Adults Monday, October 22nd • 1-2pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Get in on fun Halloween crafts geared toward our special adult patrons. Decorating pumpkins, playing games, and watching a spooky episode of Scooby Doo will be some of the exciting things offered! Participants’ caretakers must be present. For ages 16 and older.

Writers’ Ink

Monday, October 22nd • 4-5pm Location: Kentucky Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED Calling all writers! If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, the library writers’ group is perfect for you. Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.

Monday, October 29th • 6-7:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED Fall is here and it’s the perfect time for local cook Janet Fawbush to demonstrate her mouth-watering homemade biscuits and apple butter. She has lovingly cooked for her family for years and likes to share her recipes and techniques with others.

Wilderness Survival and Safety Tuesday, October 23rd • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Craig Caudill, acclaimed outdoorsman and Director of the Nature Reliance School, will cover the mindset, skills, techniques, and gear needed to stay safe and to handle unexpected circumstances in the wilderness. This session is suitable for both beginning and experienced outdoorsmen. Craig has been featured on the KET shows Kentucky Life and Tim’s Country Kitchen.

True Crime Cases

Tuesday, October 23rd • 6-7pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED This new and intriguing group will meet once a month to look at what many people are fascinated by, True Crime Cases. Each month we’ll discuss cases that have gripped a nation and try to explain the criminal psychology, by using descriptions of police investigations, and trial procedures. Our first meeting will keep it close to home with the disappearance of a mother of five from Bardstown, KY. This case inspired a new television series Oxygen Series.

Great American Read Book Series: Session 2 Thursday, October 25th • 6-7:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED

The Great American Read is an educational and community outreach campaign developed by PBS. It’s designed to get the country reading and talking about books. From the 100 suggested titles, this series will explore and discuss books representing three different genres. Session two will be facilitated by Keven McQueen from EKU and will focus on Mary Shelley’s classic mystery/horror novel Frankenstein. Prior to each session, a limited number of books will be available for checkout at the Circulation Desk while supplies last.

My Frankentoy Ate My Sock Monster!

Art Club

They’re ALIVE! Well, not really… but they’re creepy and bizarre. Take some toys, break them apart, and use the leftover bits to concoct a Frankentoy! We’ll also have everything you’ll need to make the Sock Monster of your nightmares!

During this Art Club meeting we’ll be creating a spooky Halloween canvas painting! All materials will be provided.

Teen Movie: Avengers Infinity War Saturday, October 6th • 2-4pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

The Avengers assemble their power in order to fight their collective enemy, Thanos, before he can wreak havoc on the entire planet. This film is rated PG-13.

During this program we’ll learn how art has been used to tell stories throughout history. We’ll also be creating our own works of art on canvas.

Teen Coding

Grab a friend, stop by the library, and put your pen to paper. We’ll have some creepy story prompts to choose from that will get you ready for Halloween!

This will be our second session working with our exciting new coding material. We’ll continue creating instruments and music videos, and learning how technology is used in the music industry!

The courage of Anne Frank and her family is the story of the strength of the human spirit in the most challenging times. An officer from the London Police Department will be here to share a story with us! Following the story we’ll have an activity you can take home with you.

ON DISPLAY Civil War 150 September 20th - October 25th This exhibition explores the Civil War, the most transformative period in US history. Drawing upon letters, personal accounts, and images, Civil War 150 invites Americans to understand how soldiers, presidents, freedmen, and families struggled to address the nature of democracy and citizenship, the human toll of civil war, and the role of a president in wartime.

Local Veterans Exhibit October 26th - November 7th To coincide with the release of our new 2018 edition of Our Veterans, Their Stories, the library will be showcasing photos, uniforms, and other memorabilia from this year’s participating veterans.
