Raptors LIVE

Tuesday, September 10th • 6-7pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION RTEC Learn about these beautiful birds of prey during a program presented by Raptor Rehab of Kentucky. Raptor Rehab was formed to rehabilitate injured raptors, raise orphaned birds of prey, and increase public awareness about the importance of raptors. This program is suitable for all ages.

Join us at Bookmarked where you can take part in great conversations with others who love books as much as you do. You’ll discover new favorites, explore different genres, and share thoughts about a monthly selection. We want to hear what you think, so make plans to join us the second Tuesday of each month at 6pm to get Bookmarked. This month’s selection is The Party by Robyn Harding.

Even adults love Scooby-Doo! Join us in celebrating his 50th birthday by creating your own cloth banner in his honor.

The Census & the U.S. Constitution Tuesday, September 17th • 6-7pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED RTEC

In honor of Constitution Day, Diana Anderson, Kentucky Partnership Specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau, will discuss the relationship between the U.S. Constitution and the Census. Topics include: history and impact of the census, what to expect with the 2020 Census, jobs with the Census Bureau, and the Statistics in the Schools program.

Holiday Hours: The library will be closed on Sunday, September 1st and Monday, September 2nd in observance of Labor Day. Look for the RTEC symbol to see which programs qualify for FREE transportation! Call the library to schedule.

Hogslop String Band: LIVE in Concert Friday, September 20th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION RTEC

The Hogslop String Band is a Nashville based group comprised of four energetic young musicians hailing from Georgia & Tennessee. Featuring a fiddler, guitarist, banjoist, and washtub bass player, these boys surely raise a ruckus. Following in the footsteps of such country music luminaries as Uncle Dave Macon and Gid Tanner, they put on a high energy show easily appreciated by both young and old alike. This event is co-sponsored by PNC Bank and the Laurel County Public Library.

Bite Size Learning: Case Management Wednesday, September 18th • 12-1pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED RTEC (Deadline: September 16th at 12pm)

Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by CHI Saint Joseph Health. Judy Chaney, Director of Case Management at CHI Saint Joseph Health will lead a discussion on Case Management in Hospitals. Case Management is a process by which a patient’s condition is assessed and options are discussed with the appropriate personnel to ensure the most timely, safe, and cost-effective care.

Matinee Movie: Only the Lonely

Wednesday, September 18th • 1:30-3:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION APPRECIATED RTEC This month the library is featuring an oldie, but goodie, starring John Candy, Maureen O’Hara, Ally Sheedy, and Jim Belushi. This comedic romance revolves around a Chicago cop who must balance loyalty to his overbearing mother and a relationship with a shy funeral home worker. The eccentric triangle of characters leads to a variety of hilarious situations. This movie is rated PG-13.

Murder by the Book

Learn to Play Mah Jongg

The book we’ll be reading this month is The Garden Club Gang by Neal Sanders.

Get in on the fun during this introductory session where participants will learn the basics of Mah Jongg, a game of skill, strategy, and calculation that involves a degree of chance.

Committing the perfect crime was just the beginning of their problems. After plotting to steal the daily cash gate from the Brookfield Fair and pulling the robbery off without a hitch, a group of ladies was shocked when they counted the stolen money and realized they had nearly half a million dollars – far more than the fair had reported being stolen. In a matter of hours, the Garden Club Gang would find themselves in danger, and dependent upon their own resources – and an unexpected ally – to outwit both the law and the crooks determined to find the money and silence those who stole it.

Writers’ Ink

Monday, September 23rd • 4-5pm Location: Kentucky Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, then come to the Laurel County Public Library for this month’s writers’ group meeting. Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.

AARP Driver Safety Course

Tuesday, September 24th • 9am-1pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED If you’re 50 or older, you’re eligible to attend this special AARP Driver Safety course, taught by Jim Meding. You’ll learn how to adjust your driving for age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time. You’ll also learn some defensive driving techniques and how medications affect your driving. No tests are involved, and you might even get a discount on your car insurance. The course fee for AARP members is $15 and $20 for non-members. The fee may be paid to the instructor at the beginning of class. The fee covers the cost of the materials used.

True Crime Cases: The Mysterious Death of Elisa Lam Tuesday, September 24th • 6-7pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED RTEC

This month we’ll be discussing the mysterious death of Elisa Lam, a Canadian student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She was reported missing early in February 2013. Elisa’s body was recovered from a water tank atop the Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on February 19, 2013 by hotel maintenance workers who were investigating guest complaints of problems with the water supply. The Cecil Hotel’s dark history, combined with circumstances leading up to Elisa’s death, have led to multiple theories on how she really died.

Weird Wild West with Author Keven McQueen Thu, September 26th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED The Wild West is infamous for its outrageous stories, cowboys, and gun battles. In Weird Wild West, author and EKU English Department lecturer Keven McQueen brings together a fabulous collection of tales that explore these unusual occurrences. Keven will be contrasting the West as we see it in TV shows and movies with the creepy reality (i.e. what it really felt like when a horse dragged someone or was scalped alive by Indians). A limited number of books will be available for checkout on a first come, first served basis.

A Story of Hope and “Grace” presented by SCC Thursday, September 26th • 11am-12pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION RTEC

The Somerset Community College (SCC) Physical Therapist Assistant Program will be hosting Angela Ray Rodgers and her daughter Grace Anna as they discuss their book Grace Anna Sings, sing songs, answer questions, and meet with the audience. In 2012, Grace Anna was close to death after both lungs collapsed following a spinal fusion procedure. Once recovered, she began to sing; her rendition of the national anthem received worldwide attention. She’s made appearances on local and national television and has developed a strong social media presence, with more than 1.2 million followers and videos reaching over 25 million people. Grace Anna’s enthusiasm for life and positivity is contagious, and she continues to impress the world through her amazing accomplishments. The most important of these is allowing her story to be used to help others live more positive lives. Grace Anna’s journey through life will inspire you to be the best you can be no matter your circumstances. Her resilient spirit has helped her overcome obstacles in life which will move you to choose to live, not just exist. The faith of her family to believe in the impossible will inspire you to take steps to make your life better. Her fearlessness challenges will challenge you to be bold, be brave, and step out courageously. Grace Anna’s love of life will motivate you to seek joy where there appears to be only darkness. Autographs and book signing will be held in the lobby after the event. Participants interested in having a book signed, will need to purchase a book during the event.

Shred-A-Book Contest

Teen Art Club: Sculptures Part 2

Find the jar in the Teen Space and take a guess at what book we’ve shredded. If you guess right, you’ll receive a prize!

Join your fellow artists at Art Club, where your creativity can be expressed and explored. This month we’ll be continuing to explore the art of sculpting. During this second session, you’ll be putting your finishing touches on your sculpture.

Follow Little Red and meet her friends – the three little pigs, the boy who cried wolf, and more – as they learn to face their fears and stand up to the Big Bully Wolf! Learn to identify, report and resist bullying as we follow Little Red on her journey to grandma’s house.

Ready to Read: This interactive storytime is designed for preschool aged children, and focuses on building cognitive, social, physical, and early literacy skills. Readers are Leaders: Geared for school aged students, this program provides a time to discuss books, play games, and participate in exciting hands-on activities. Saturday Storytime: Fun for all ages, this storytime is a way to fill your Saturday morning with excitement!

Lewis & Clark: Kentuckians and the Corps of Discovery September 1st - October 31st

Kentucky had numerous connections to the Corps of Discovery that explored the Louisiana Purchase and Oregon Country with Meriwether Lewis and William Clark between 1803 and 1806. This exhibit examines some of them, including Kentucky being a recruiting ground and departure point for the Corps, and a Frankfort newspaper being the first to carry news of the Corps’ return. The exhibit is a collaborative project of the Kentucky Historical Society, The Filson Historical Society and the Kentucky Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commission.
