Parkinson’s Disease and Optimal Health

February 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th • 5:30-6:30pm

Maintaining cognitive brain health is a high priority for people with Parkinson’s Disease and their family members. Just like physical exercise, keeping your brain active is important for cognition in Parkinson’s Disease, as well as healthy aging.

For many years, Don White has shared a method he developed using perception to structure and exercise cognitive function. The results of Don’s methods include clearer cognitive function and improved reasoning skills. Don will offer a series of four progressive classes on Mondays in February.

Charles M. Schulz: An American Cartoonist

Join us for this exciting virtual event with the Charles Schulz Museum. Take a pictorial journey through Charles M. Schulz’s life and career, and learn why Peanuts is one of the most popular and influential comic strips ever. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy a how-to-draw Snoopy workshop.

Underground Railroad in Kentucky

Many people in Kentucky contributed to critical and fascinating roles in the story of abolitionism and the Underground Railroad.

Melinda Allen, professor of history at Somerset Community College, will discuss the network of routes, safe havens, historic sites, and people who participated in, what is widely recognized as, the first great freedom movement in the Americas.

Breakable Hearts with Sheila Parrett

Tuesday, February 7th • 2-3pm

Don’t go breaking my heart, unless it’s made of chocolate! Sheila Parrett, formerly of Parrett’s Pies and Pastries, will demonstrate how to make a chocolate heart you can stuff with a special sweet of your choice, and then smash them for a showstopping Valentine’s Day treat! For this demonstration, we’ll be using chocolate dipped strawberries.

Soap Making with Rock Bottom Soap

Friday, February 10th • 1-2pm

Discover the difference of using handmade, goat milk soap. Amy Henson, of Rock Bottom Soap Company, will demonstrate the process, list the ingredients, and share the benefits of using goat milk soap.

Abraham Lincoln attempts to outlaw slavery by fighting for the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, all while negotiating peace with the South and dealing with his mentally unstable wife. This movie is rated PG-13.

Turkey Hunting in the Bluegrass

Thursday, February 16th • 6-7pm

Learn turkey hunting strategies, types of calls and calling techniques, some turkey biology, and watch highlights of turkey hunting action in Kentucky from the viral show, Struttin’ in the Bluegrass Merle Hacker, Regional Biologist with the Department of Fish and Wildlife, avid hunter, and one of the hosts of Struttin’ in the Bluegrass, will share his knowledge and give you tips, tricks, and tactics for turkey hunting success.

DrumPower with Joan Brannon

DrumPower is an interactive presentation that shares the culture of West African drumming through rhythm, song, and story. Participants of all ages will explore rhythm in a powerful way to inspire and nurture their creative voice through drumming.

Joan Brannon, percussionist and teacher, will lead this fun and inspiring program. Ms. Brannon has studied with Master Drummers and teachers in Conakry, Guinea. She’s also worked with Master Drummers in the U.S. who brought teachings from Mali and Ghana.

True Crime: Bitter Blood Murders

Tuesday, February 28th • 6-7pm

In 1985, first cousins and lovers, Susie Newsom Lynch and Fritz Klenner led police and FBI on a chase that ended in an explosion that killed them and Susie’s two young sons. It was the culmination of a bloody feud that had already left five dead, decimating two prominent families in a southern gothic tragedy of Shakespearean proportions.

This program was originally scheduled for January but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.

Learn about native wildlife with Tonya Poindexter from Wilderness Trail Wildlife Center. She’ll bring some non-release rescue animals, discuss bizarre facts, and share mind-blowing myths.

Wilderness Trail Wildlife Center strives to change the way that the world sees local wildlife, and help the wildlife to become a more respected part of the community.

Wilderness Trail Wildlife Center is a 501c3 organization and a wildlife rescue, rehab, release, and education service that also gives a voice to wildlife. Permitted by Kentucky Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council, and USDA.

Happenings: DrummingWorks

DrummingWorks uses African drumming as a tool for discovery, and as a way to teach communitybuilding skills. Rhythm-based activities create a non-competitive inclusive environment, in which all children can thrive.

Joan Brannon, lead facilitator for DrummingWorks and a teaching artist for the Kentucky Arts Council, will inspire us to nurture our creative voice with rhythm exploration, through this fun and exciting workshop!

Capture the Yeti!

Among one of the most prolific and beloved American writers and illustrators of the 20th century, Lobel loved his work. Many of his heartwarming stories revolve around animals and their misadventures. He was one of the few people to receive Caldecott and Newbery medals as both an author and illustrator of over a hundred works.

Babygarten: Designed for children up to age 3, this program provides a basic understanding of child development, while providing an engaging time for children and caregivers!

Storytime: This interactive storytime is designed for preschool aged children, and focuses on building cognitive, social, physical, and early literacy skills.

Readers are Leaders: Geared for school aged students, this program provides a time to discuss books, play games, and participate in exciting hands-on activities.

Stories of Rescue

February 1st-28th

In recognition of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th, we are showcasing an exhibit provided by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The stories of ordinary people who chose to intervene and help rescue Jews, despite the risks, demonstrate that individuals have the power to make a difference.
