Information: +64 27 6965 605 | laurenhickling@live.co.uk 18 Colombo St, Newtown, WELLINGTON 24 years old | NZ Citizen Full portfolio at: issuu.com/laurenhickling Personal Profile and Experience I am formally trained with a Bachelors of Architectural Studies majoring in Interior Architecture at Victoria University of Wellington where I am currently working towards my Masters in Interior Architecture, due to finish between December 2014 and February 2015. Through my education I have become proficient in the Adobe Suite, Revit and 3ds Max, using these programs to design, render and present designs from retail and hospitality to large scale public interiors. For the thesis year I am focusing on the design of contemporary fine dining spaces, using notions of surprise and atmosphere to create beautiful, memorable space reflective of the cuisine served. I have a particular interest in materials and how their inherent qualities can fuel the design and perception of space. I have a keen eye for graphic design, believing a well presented piece of work is key to its reception. In 2009 I spent a year in England working as a Gap Student at Rendcomb College, Cirencester. As part of this role I spent a large amount of my time in administration working under the Headmasters PA, Bursars Secretary and within administration itself where I learnt the ins and outs of office life and the importance of well communicated, organised work ethics. Within this role I completed anything asked of me such as photocopying, filing, being on front desk, compiling documents and typing up small pieces of writing. As a previous summer and holiday job, I have travelled home to Gisborne to work on the family sheep and cattle farm as Head-Shepherd. This type of physical work has taught perseverance, commitment and the importance of being a team player to complete a job properly and safely, qualities which have stuck with me throughout my university career.

AN INTERIOR OF MEMORY + SURPRISE SARC591_Research through Design Full year, 2014 Fine Dining Atmosphere Exploration
002 Surprise, as in to astonish or amaze, is the tool; memorable experience is the purpose; and beautiful interior atmosphere is the product.
This design research started with an interest in kinetic architecture, with pieces that could engage and surprise to form unique, memorable experience. It soon became apparent that interest was not with the kinetic itself but the experience it created. This experience and surprise can also be seen in Peter Zumthor’s atmospheric, ephemeral spaces which provoke the senses, surprise the inhabitant and become memorable for their sheer beauty. With an aim to understand and recreate these atmospheres the design research looks at the contemporary fine dining interior, a space where beauty and exceptional atmosphere are expected, and memorable experience is valued for its ability to help bring the customer back time and time again.
PLATE
Sight | Touch | Sound After analysis using Zumthor’s nine principles of atmosphere the impact of sensory interaction as reception of atmosphere fuelled design. The design engages sight through the application of a central hole, sound through a hollow shell where sound resonates and touch through a hidden texture applied to the underside of the plate, creating a multifaceted design capable of generating surprise and creating memory 003

First the table surface, plus the actors which take part in the ritual of dining, are analysed used Zumthors nine principles of atmosphere. This creates a suggested placement design, a small dip suggested where the plate will sit. In a second design phase the table and chair are considered as a pair that also play a part in a series which respond to the course served. Using Gastronomic Analogy, material choices are made according to the meals experiential qualities.

FINE DINING FIT-OUT Il Casino | 168 Tory St, Wellington, NZ
Taking the multilevel, ground floor of Il Casino, the design investigation started with massing studies around how processional dining to match a degustation could fit and function, then how it could take advantage of Zumthor’s atmospheric principles in full scale. The design also looked to take advantage of the double height spaces in comparison to the lower ceilings around the mezzanine.

“From within the safety of the house, I can venture to its edges, its perimeters, and, undetected, experiment with facing my fears of the dark, of the adults, of a large noisy world. In the eaves I escape, I huddle, I frighten myself, I cry and whisper and laugh and plot. In this hollow between the self I know and see and the one I do not know and cannot see yet, but sense I test my own limits and learn my own secrets. In these hollow walls dwells the unknown, the in-between, the impossible, the unseen. Exploring them, I am hero and master of the unknown; I stare fear in the face and survive. Inside Fear: Secret Places and Hidden Spaces in Dwellings, Anne Troutman

“we should be more conscious that we are talking about the remaining effects of Germany’s division, not the consequences of its reunification”
037
The East
German Democratic Republic After the Berlin Wall was built on the 13th of August, 1969, people from the communist East were soon trapped within the regime, often trying and failing to break out to the West or other parts of Europe. People seen as suspicious to the Government were watched by the ‘Stasi’, the secret police, with people living under constant oppression. Although change was fast compared to other communist countries, it was slow in comparison to the consumer driven West Germany fuelled by the allies.
038
039
The West
Federal Republic of Germany West Germany was a country of quick change and development fuelled by the allies during the Cold War. During its separation from the East the West underwent a ‘Wirtschaftswunder”, an“economic miracle” in which inflation halted, the values of international trade doubled and huge economic upturn occurred with help from the allies, America in particular. Along with this people were also free to express themselves as they wished, with ‘punk’ filtering in from London.
040
Reunified Yet Divided
1989 saw the fall of the Berlin wall after 40 years of separation under opposing governing structures and cultures that developed through this. Germans agreed to reunification with open arms hoping it would solve their problems to create a happier life. It soon became apparent that this was only a honeymoon phase and problems such as unemployment, rising prices, a looming recession and East Germans being treated as second rate citizens caused divisions between the East and West. These aversions to one another still divide the country mentally with over half of the population feeling the country isn’t united.

OF THE HIDDEN SIDE INTA311_John Daish Semester One 2012 Hotel Refit for the John Chambers Building
056
The tectonics of the design draws on the placing of the John Chambers Building within its surroundings by using the aesthetic of forcing elements apart to create individual spaces, allowing the space to be fully exploited but never physically connected. This tectonic idea has led to private spaces being hidden behind layers of pushed and pulled on forms and public spaces to occur in the hollow voids between the fighting forms or the intervention and the existing exterior. These voids are often pushed into to create viewing platforms that then put the inhabitant on display before they slide back into a private crevice. To create a poly-vocal space the design draws on human curiosity and the need to find what is on the ‘hidden’ side of a form, to define the route through the crevices to the hidden or exposed alike.
