A Chat with Dana Bullen at Sunday River
BL: What are the major differences between Sunday River and Sugarloaf ? DB: Sunday River people want others to experience what they have. Bethel Living sat down with Dana Bullen, President of Sunday River Skiway, to talk about his tenure at Sunday River and to find out the inside story on plans for the 2016 / 2017 ski season.
Sugarloaf is a smaller community with a sense of Sugarloaf pride. They’re a more closed group. Here, if there’s a favorite mug club, folks want everyone to go there, as with a favorite trail, they want to share it with each other. Sunday River folks are very inclusive, very welcoming from all senses.
BL: Dana, you’ve been President of Sunday River Skiway for a dozen years now - how does it feel?
BL: So you plan on being here for a while?
DB: It feels great! Things are a lot different than when I started. Now
DB: Yes, I’m 51 now, and I plan on working until I’m 64. I’d like
it feels like home. We have 1,200 team members in the winter and about 400 during the summer months and they all feel like family. After being at Sugarloaf for about 15 years I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I’ve been extremely pleased with the homey feeling we have here.
to finish out my career right here. Working for the Boyne family and for Stephen Kircher has been a delight compared to working for publicly traded companies. When you talk with Boyne, you talk from experience, people who truly know how to run ski resorts.
È
Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com
BL: You’ve seen many changes over the past dozen years - what are some of the largest changes you’ve seen? DB: The Chondola was a huge change - it’s not just for the skiers, it’s
turned the Peak Lodge into a place for conferences and weddings. Gordon Research holds Lobster Bakes up there every Thursday throughout the summer. Our wedding business is constantly growing and we offer Full Moon Dinners up there. The Chondola has helped transform what we have been able to do with the entire South Ridge area.
BL: Anything else new and fun coming up? DB: Our team is always drumming up fun weekend plans and you’ll be able to continue to count on all of our regular events, plus our world renowned snow making and grooming. Sunday River folks know what to expect here. We won last year’s Snowmaker of the Year award from HKD! BL: Harding Lee Smith of his famous “The Rooms” Restaurants is joining you at Sunday River as well, eh?
BL: What’s a fun thing about Sunday River?
BL: Tell us what’s new for this upcoming ski season.
DB: Yes, he’s an amazing man! We are working on “The Mountain Room”, under his guidance and direction. Phase One will increase the bar up at the Peak Lodge from 5 seats to about 25 seats and will have full restaurant service with Harding’s delicious offerings. We’ll be expanding that side with a large deck to mirror the current deck. Folks will still be able to get the same cafeteria service with more healthy options this year.
DB: We’ve spent about $2 Million in capital in residing buildings,
BL: All indications point to a very snowy winter . . .
new pavement and we’ve been doing a lot of repairs down at White Cap Lodge. We’ve also completely rebuilt the snow making pump house to be more efficient and we’re working on the plan for a new Spruce Peak lift.
DB: Yes, tell all your friends to come on up and join us for a fabulous winter season!
DB: I love Eddy the Yeti! I love who he is and I love who he represents.
He’s taken on a life of his own with his new home in the woods. He and Betty leave for the summer and come back around peak foliage for Columbus Day weekend and Fall Festival. It’s wonderful.

Fire&Rain Bethel Living sought out Steve Perry, who has lived in the area and worked at Sunday River for a few decades. It’s always fun to chat with Steve as he reminisces about happenings big and small at Sunday River and Mount Abram. Beer may have been involved. BL: Hey, Steve, everyone loves hearing about local drama, what incidents from the past are in your story bag? SP: During the summer I often think back to the middle of July
2011. I was out on my deck and a large thunderstorm raged through with an excess of lightening. Just after that I could see a lot of smoke coming from Mount Abram, the base lodge had been struck and burst into flames. Everything was destroyed — from computers to phones systems, all records of their history — everything but the gravel in the parking lot. Complete loss. Now they have an energy efficient Quonset Hut-styled base lodge and a hugely successful solar array with a highly sophisticated snow making system. It’s an awesome tale of survival from tragedy! BL: Wow! That was an amazing time, yes, since that fire things have really changed at Mount Abram — and for the better! SP: Yeah, that’s for sure. BL: How about a Sunday River memory or two? SP: In 2007 there was an amazing flood that was caused when about
9 inches of rain fell within 2 hours over the Skiway. All of this rain devastated so many of the natural water holds that tons and tons of earth £ä
Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com
was moved down through all the brooks and streams eventually blowing apart the Barker holding pond -leaving Barker Lodge hanging by a thread! This all occurred on the day that Boyne signed papers and took over the operations at Sunday River. The town of Bethel’s water reservoir located on the back side of Barker Mountain couldn’t contain the surge of excess water, and it was destroyed, never to be rebuilt again. That flood caused over $2.5 million in destruction of fiberoptic lines, phone lines, culverts, wells and removed earth — just at Sunday River. It was devastating! Road Runner was gone. After the wrack-up, everyone was placed on super long shifts to try and get all the systems back and functional. It took a few months of really hard work, but somehow we all recovered. One woman from the Forest Rally was almost swept downstream in Barker Brook at the entrance to the Summit Road but was saved in the nick of time as a security worker was able to back a Sunday River heavy-duty pickup to her car. She leapt from her car into the pickup bed just before her car was hurled down river through the woods in the rage. BL: What about that Skip King story about a crazy event with a piece of heavy machinery??
SP: I heard this at a roast for Skip some time around the late 90’s that was given when he was leaving employment at Sunday River. Jay Gamble shared this story. This is how Sunday River got its first computer.
They were building a bunch of new trails from the top of the Barker lift and Skip was working on a new trail called Right Stuff. For transportation Skip used a Bombardier, which looks like a tank on tracks. With this a worker could carry all the trail clearing gear and welding equipment as well as have a rugged mountain vehicle to do the tough clearing jobs and climb the steep sections. Anyway, at the end of the day Skip headed down the last headwall of Right Stuff and as the “bomb” picked up speed Skip realized he had no brakes! Skip was normally the Patrol Director, not really a trail clearer and he was finding it impossible to stop the huge rig so he bailed on the steepest part and mangled his leg pretty bad. As Skip rolled around and watched the bomb go it slowed and gently came to a stop in the hollow below that headwall. Being all banged up, Les said to Skip “Now that you’re all banged up, what are we going to do with you for the next few months?” So Skip, being Skip, created a new job for himself by saying “Well, I can write up a new manual for rules and procedures, but you’re going to have to get me a computer”. BL: Too much! It’s always great to hear your stories not only of Sunday River but of the entire area. We’ll check in with you again soon!

The
Doyle
Family Hostel Used broadly, the word community can mean — simply — a given area people live in. More specifically, it can imply a sense of direction and belonging that those people may enjoy. Every place has a story about itself and that story is rewritten every day by the lives that are led and the connections that are created — or not. Because growing a community in the right direction doesn’t happen on its own, it must be done with purpose and intention, with genuine kindness and objective accountability. Which is easy to write but tough to do because — lets face it — life is messy. And unpredictable. And . . . yeah, messy. In 2010 when Deb and Dave Doyle, along with their 8 kids, purchased the already established Bethel Hostel they expected to maintain the affiliation with Hostelling International — hosting visitors from around the world and forming lasting relationships during their weekly or nightly stays. But life intruded on that plan when Dave received a cancer diagnosis. The challenges raised by Dave’s illness forced a reduction in Hostel visitors, and his passing this summer brought Deb to the realization that she had to repurpose the Bethel Hostel into a more sustainable entity by instituting a local focus. Ending the connection to Hostelling International and beginning over as a resident-managed housing cooperative has allowed Deb to put her “Occupy Life” philosophy into action. The new undertaking is not a half-way house, or a recovery house, £{ Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com
or any type of hospital or step-process program. It is temporary lodging — a way station for people to inhabit while they attempt to settle (or resettle) in the Bethel community. But it involves more than that; learning to live with integrity while sharing space, Deb believes, is the basis for developing essential life skills. Doyle’s cooperative housing model is a work in progress without a huge set of rules and regulations — just common sense pathways to bettering one’s life. There is a strict alcohol and drug policy with mandatory clean living in shared spaces. Each person must live independently, yet there is a once-a-month pot luck dinner to encourage community spirit. The Hostel has three private apartments upstairs and six private sleeping quarters with a kitchen and common area on the first floor. The ideal resident has an external support system such as family or faith, employment and — hopefully — transportation. Young families looking to work toward permanent housing are preferred, but the Hostel possesses the ability to work with individuals as well. Resident’s progress is assessed on a monthly basis with the goal of moving them out to a self-reliant housing situation within a year of moving in. The entire scheme is based on the belief that we can create the life we want without taking from others. Hostel residents live together with the expectation to act as neighbors, mentors and friends — helping each other as they work toward a balanced life by maintaining a healthy environment while

No matter how educated, talented, rich or cool you believe you are, how you treat people tells all. Integrity is everything.
Deb thanks her lucky stars for her life with Dave. Being open to the ideals of compassion, forgiveness and responsibility — having a bond with others and shedding light on a positive future through this type of venture was always their goal. The Bethel Hostel is an asset to the Bethel area, and Dave would be extremely proud of Deb’s transformation from their original plan to this new vision. Life, love, hope and the shot at a second chance define Deb’s message. And that is how communities grow in the right direction. ÊV Ì>VÌÊ iLÊ Þ iÊ>ÌÊ } ` Þ iÃJ} > °V Ê ÀÊV> ÊÓäÇ ÎxÇ äÓÇx

investing in each other, but not telling each other what to do. Deb oversees the group and offers guidance about establishing a budget, securing transportation or planning for the next stable, sustainable living situation. Essentially, the arrangement all hinges on harnessing the desire within people to give, support and coach each other toward a better life.

Fresh From Mountains
In our continuing effort to support all the wonderful people, places and products from our Western Maine haven BL will be offering a series of short profiles entitled “Fresh from the Mountains”. If you know of someone or something that embodies the mountain way of life, let us know. We love a good story!
Mary Harrington grew up in the Sunday River Valley spending many pristine days surrounded by horses, goats, chickens and the large garden at her grandmother’s farm. With the mountains as her backdrop, the Sunday River as her boundary and the tall pines by the Covered Bridge as her canopy she swam in the river, biked to the Letter S and Frenchman’s, and remembers a time -- not so long ago -- when things were a lot quieter around here.
Now residing in Albany Township, Mary offers up Mountainess Hand Mades, a wholesome product line she has been melding since 2013. Using snow as one of the essential ingredients, she compounds soaps, lotions, balms and deodorants with sensuous aromas and soothing spirits. The all natural cold processed soaps call for distilled water — meaning water without fluoride, chlorine or other chemicals. Surrounded by fluffy white water for much of the year, Mary stockpiles melted snow whenever she can, filtering out impurities for use in many of her creations. She started with baby lotions for her infant daughters then continued expanding the product line into home necessities such as soy candles — available in 14 scents -- with favorites like balsam, lavender, lilac, pumpkin and varied fragrances that fluctuate throughout the year. Mountainess products are offered locally at Philbrook Place, and in the Old Port of Portland as well as on Etsy, and at her bustling website. She loves creating packages for bridal parties or for other events, so look her up and enjoy a truly Maine Mountain treasure.
