Publisher’s Note This winter in the Western Maine Mountains has given us constantly changing weather featuring a record deep freeze, beautiful sunny days and January thaws with heavy rainfall. But the ground is white and the skiing conditions remain excellent! The best is yet to come! So far this season I have been fat biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing to my heart’s content. Get outside - the woods are calling! In this issue we are reporting on the Bethel area’s community spirit. Our Youth Football team offers coaching on and off the field, focussing on good sportsmanship and great life lessons. The Bethel Outing Club, now over 30 years old, continues to provide affordable access to cross-country skiing and people powered sports such as hiking, bicycling, running, paddling, swimming and roller skiing. Jessica Sciraco keeps us up to speed with the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum, and Cheryl Gillespie reports that the senior scene on the slopes is one of social play, camaraderie and pot-luck parties. Who knew that aging could be so fun? You’ll be able to impress your next guests with Steve & Gary’s White Chocolate Bread Pudding recipe from Rooster’s Roadhouse. Deanne from the Bethel Area Chamber shares the Events Listings. With so much winter fun ahead, you’ll want to organize your calendar! My production support team is wonderful, as are my advertisers, readers and subjects — you all make knocking together this magazine a joy, not a task. Every day I hear from friends and local folks who are as thrilled to live here as I am. Bethel and it’s surrounding villages, mountains, rivers and plains are where it’s at!

TELSTAR YOUTH FOOTBALL Fortunately for the New England Patriots, the best football team in this corner of the country is probably a bit too young to pose much of a threat. Under the watchful gaze of coaches Dick Paaso, Elijah Mason, Aaron Vermette and Jack Mallory the 5th6th grade squad of Telstar Youth Football romped to an undefeated 2017 season; a feat not even their heroes down in Gillette Stadium could match. The Telstar Youth Football program, now in its 15th year, is composed of more than fifty
students from 2nd through 8th grades in 4 local towns. This program — sponsored by the Town of Greenwood, staffed by dedicated coaches and managed by amazing volunteer parents — is focused on building a program that teaches young players the essentials of safety and conditioning combined with the fundamentals of football. Coach Dominic Haines, who works with the 7th and 8th grade group, sums up what football means to the schools and the community:
“I coach because it makes me happy, but there is a bigger purpose. I went to Telstar for three years, and then moved on to Mountain Valley High School. At MVHS I found a football atmosphere, that feeling across the whole town where people loved football season. That’s what I want for the Telstar program. At Telstar we had a lot of talented athletes but could never put it all together because of lack of commitment, focus and dedication. The group of athletes coming through currently have great potential. With the right guidance, these upcoming players will seek their full potential. I feel obligated to give these kids the coaching and the guidance they deserve not only as football players but also as young men.” Another core group are the parents, who

do everything from scheduling refs to upholding league regulations to manning the snack shack and — at season’s end — making sure there’s enough pizza at the awards ceremony. Parent Maranda Koskela shares her experience with TYF: “We started with Telstar Youth Football about four years ago when our oldest son wanted to play. As a mom, I was a little nervous about it. We arrived at the field to get him all fitted in his gear. The coaches took so much time making sure everything fit the way it should and then it was time to go out onto the field. My son was nervous and didn’t know anyone. He didn’t even make it all the way out to the field and was turning around to head back to us, but the other boys on the team saw this. Without even thinking about it or being asked the boys
headed over and helped him over that hump. Right then we knew this was the experience we wanted for him. It has turned into a family event with everyone knowing each other. We are all willing to help out. We look forward to football season every year with more kids and their families becoming involved. Now all four of our boys are in football. Its an amazing sport with amazing coaches, families and players and it’s a blast to watch and participate.” Come on out and join in the fun by helping out the Middle and High School Boosters! Anyone can get involved. FMI on Telstar Youth Football and Telstar Football visit their Facebook pages or call Telstar High School coach Tim O’Connor at (207) 890-6115

A local fixture for more than 37 years...
While the Bethel Outing Club — a local fixture for more than 37 years — is best known for managing the annual ski sale each year in the Gould Academy field house, that is just the beginning of the great work done by this group. According to Nancy Babcock of Newry, while the ski sale makes money for the club, “it is just as much a way to connect people with the gear they need.” And that, in a nutshell, is the focus of all the activities and programs that the BOC has come to sponsor and support over the past few decades; bringing people and families together with the resources necessary to enjoy the natural bounty of our area. Don Angevine, a top-notch cross-country skier at Gould Academy in the late 1950s, created the Bethel Nordic Ski Club as a loosely organized association committed to promoting family oriented outings and youth development programs. As the group expanded into hiking and canoeing trips to fill the summer season void, the name changed to the Bethel Outing Club. The BOC sponsors free after-school ski
programs with equipment for kids at Crescent Park Elementary School, and at the Woodstock elementary school. It has supported one at the Andover elementary school in the past too. The BOC also assists skiers at Telstar and Gould Academy in many ways as well. “The BOC has been great for me and my family,” continues Babcock, “When my son Kyler was in the Bill Koch Youth Ski League we certainly enjoyed getting together with other families to cross-country ski at the different ski centers in the area, as well as to enjoy the Bill Koch Festival at the end of the season.” She said the BOC also provides “a great way to be in touch with others who might want to go skiing, hiking, biking, paddling, dancing or whatever. Anyone can post something they’d like to do, looking for others who are interested.”
compete at Telstar High School, but lack of snow was a problem. “It had rained for four previous days. The snow on Telstar’s trails was rotten,” Angevine said, “and the only place where there was usable snow was on the snowmobile trails. The Town of Bethel came to the rescue, hauling 26 truckloads of snow for the jump.” The BOC brought the Bill Koch Festival back to town last winter, in March of 2017. Over 400 young

skiers, accompanied by their siblings and parents, experienced the best of Bethel on a cold, blustery weekend where there was no lack of snow, nor lack of enthusiasm and excitement. Club President Norm Greenberg, a nineyear member, “joined to become more involved with nordic skiing in the Bethel area, to learn to be a better skier, to meet individuals and families interested in human powered outdoor recreation and to provide a great place for my family to enjoy the outdoors with other like-minded families,” he said. Three years ago, the club started a weekly trail running series on the Pine Hill Trails off Grover Hill Road, with 20 to 30 runners participating in a timed 5-kilometer and 5-mile loop. Runners included adults, Telstar and Gould high school students and younger children. In addition, said

Greenberg, “Many of our 300+ members hike, roller ski, mountain bike, road bike, and participate in group rides organized by Barker Mountain Bikes. Endurance recreation is growing in popularity, especially mountain biking locally.” The Bethel Outing Club, together with Mahoosuc Pathways and community partner Gould Academy, has also taken over the cross-country center at the Bethel Inn, which provides the retail space for the Bethel Village Trails center, as well as the grooming equipment and fuel to sculpt the 25 miles of nordic, snowshoeing and fat biking trails. The two nonprofits provide management of the ski shop, instruction and rental gear for skiing and snowshoeing. Barker Mountain Bikes provides fat bikes to rent at the shop. Some 50 volunteers help staff to run the ski center and instruct
beginners. “It’s a community ski center. You can literally walk up Main Street in your boots and out onto the trails and go skiing,” observes Bethel Inn’s Sales and Marketing Director Brad Jerome. Every weekend and many weekdays through mid-March, BOC members can be seen using trails at The Bethel Inn, the new Bethel Village Trails, Carter’s X-C Center and other area venues. Whether you are a Nordic beginner or a seasoned pro, the BOC — a centerpiece of the thriving Bethel outdoor community — is a great place to expand your horizons. MINED, GLOBALLY WORN. DIG IT!
The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum’s (MMGM) Rock Garden exhibit contains a range of specimens that represent many aspects of Maine’s geology and mineral resource industries. In the last issue of Bethel Living magazine we featured granite, perhaps Maine’s most well-known mineral resource. In this issue we will cover two other mineral resources that have long been important to Maine’s economy, slate and lime (marble). Slate quarrying began in Maine in the early 1800’s. Most of the mining activity was located in northern Maine in the towns of Blanchard, Brownfield and Monson. Production in these areas continued for some time and began to wind down after WWI. Products are still manufactured today by Sheldon Slate in Monson, Piscataquis Co., Maine, who donated the three slabs seen in MMGM’s rock garden. Slate is a foliated, low grade, regional metamorphic rock, meaning that the rock was subjected to moderately low temperatures and pressures that induced change. Foliated rocks have distinguishable layers that are created by the alignment of mineral grains, which is the result of directed pressures applied by tectonic forces. Shale, a sedimentary rock, is the predecessor of slate, or in geology speak a ‘protolith’, a fancy way of saying the former rock that became slate once it was metamorphosed. Shale forms from the buildup of sediment on the bottom of ocean basins, primarily clay mineral grains. One can think of slate as having formed from sediment that deposited in an ocean basin. For this particular specimen, the sediment would have been deposited approximately 360-420 million years ago in an ocean that no longer exists! One of the advantages of working with slate is that it will continually break in a preferred orientation, commonly called “slaty cleavage”. This characteristic breakage is due to the alignment of millions of microscopic grains of mica (a flat, sheetlike mineral), which is the primary mineral constituent in slate though there are small amounts of other minerals like quartz. Slate has many applications ranging from building materials like household counters
and sinks, as an insulator for capacitors and electric switchboards, pool tables and in the past it was commonly used for chalk boards. Its ability to resist weathering makes it an ideal material for uses like roofing shingles and monuments. Marble mining in Maine began in the mid 1700’s for the production of lime, a key ingredient used in manufacturing mortar and concrete and to a lesser extent as a soil amendment for agricultural purposes. Although much of the production has ceased today, Dragon Products Company of Thomaston, Maine processes this material for the purpose of cement products. They donated one of the two marble boulders seen in MMGM’s rock garden. Maine’s lime quarrying industry, like many of the earliest granite and pegmatite quarries, was located in close proximity to the coastline. Early on this was a favorable circumstance as schooners were a primary mode of transporting large volumes of goods. Lime production was primarily centered around the towns of Thomaston, Rockport and Rockland and to a lesser extent the towns of Union and Warren. In fact, the industry was so prolific it is the reason why the town of ‘Rockland’ was given its name.
Boulder of banded gray marble donated by Dragon Products Company of Thomaston, Maine.
Slabs of slate donated by Sheldon Slate of Monson, Maine.
Marble is a metamorphic rock that develops from the metamorphism of limestone, its sedimentary protolith. Marble and limestone are composed primarily of calcite, a calcium carbonate mineral, which comes from sediment derived from shelled organisms living in the ocean. The organisms that made this rock were living over 540 million years ago. Many of these Rock Garden specimens were acquired in the form of donations. Visitors interested in getting involved in the project will have an opportunity to sponsor a specimen in the rock garden. Interested supporters can also set their name in stone on the granite pavers lining the pathway of the rock garden. For a complete list of available pavers and prices visit MMGM’s website. FMI visit MaineMineralMuseum.org
When most people think of marble they recall the pure white varieties used for carving sculptures, however, it comes in a wide variety of shades. In this specimen both the dark and light portions are composed of marble. The dark portions are the result of impurities.

Skiers who are
Young at Heart
What do skiers do when they reach their senior years? Hopefully . . . ski. To see some older folks in action visit Sunday River on any weekday and you will encounter many skiers with decades of hitting the slopes under their belts. Senior skiers say the sport keeps them young. Many love to share their passion — and their prowess — with grandchildren, providing a crossgenerational common bond. Everyone looks like they’re having a ton of fun, too. According to Darcy Lambert of Sunday River there are about 500 pass-holders taking advantage of the discount offered on silver and gold passes to skiers between the ages of sixty-five and seventy-nine. And surely there are a great many more senior skiers who avoid the weekend crowds by

purchasing bronze passes, which are not discounted. In addition, there are about 100 free passes given to skiers age eighty and over, a very admirable number. It is heartening to watch people who ski well into their eighties. Greg Sweetser, Executive Director of the Maine Ski Association, fondly boasts of his mother Connie skiing until she was eighty-four. In searching out senior skiers, Bethel Living decided to go to the North Peak lodge at ten o’clock on a weekday to meet with members of the Prime Time Ski Club. There, club president Jack Kuchta and his wife Irene were most welcoming. In no time, a rowdy group of about twenty people filled the downstairs room. Jack told BL that females outnumber males in the club, which boasts
approximately 150 members. Among that number are about a dozen skiers aged eighty or older. One eighty-plus female skier is involved with Maine Adaptive Sports at Sunday River. As everyone readied to head out, information was shared — mixed with lots of jokes — while one woman gushed, “You won’t have to struggle to keep up with your husband.”
Several other women laughed and voiced agreement. We all skied off in groups, as the club’s motto is “You’ll Never Ski Alone.” In fact, on the club website there are original lyrics meant to be sung to the tune of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” An invitation was extended to join the potluck supper that same evening at the Grand Summit Hotel. There, BL learned more about these skiers. The original Prime Time Club had its start in the late 1980s, but it became fully established and grew to the current membership level in the early 2000s. To become a member one has to be at least fifty or have a spouse who is, and one person of the couple must ski. Fulfilling that requirement and paying an initial $25.00 membership fee ($15.00 to renew thereafter) is all that is required to join the club. Membership benefits are great, with many activities offered in addition to skiing. To list just a few: there are potluck suppers,
beer and wine tastings, movie nights at the Gem Theater with drinks and pizza before the show, snow shoeing, cooking classes, game nights, ski lessons and field trips to other ski areas such as Bretton Woods and Sugarloaf. Off season, members bike, kayak and enjoy other spring, summer and fall activities. The club sets members up with discounts at local ski shops, restaurants and lodging at the Pleasant River Motel. Of course, many senior skiers do their own thing with family and friends instead of joining a club. Those wishing to enjoy a change in skiing venue can connect with tour operator Joe Parent. When BL asked Joe if he had skied his whole life, he replied,
“Not yet.” This devoted skier has been on the Sunday River ski patrol for 30 years and has organized ski trips to France, Italy and Switzerland, as well as excursions to Big Sky in Montana through his travel company, Happy Times Tours, for 38 years. For 2018, Happy Times is offering a trip to Bormio, a ski resort in the northern Italian Dolomites. After seven days of skiing in Bormio, trip participants can opt to enjoy an extension of three days in Amsterdam before returning to the states. All ages are welcome to join Joe’s ski outings, and senior skiers flock to the well organized trips which feature economical lodging, meals and transportation. As a ski patroller, Joe welcomes the addition of snowboarders to the trails, where he has found that accident rates involving skiers vs. snowboarders are comparable. Some snowboarders go too fast, but so do many skiers. Everyone must learn to share the trails. His advice — ski and ride in control. Skiing in your senior years can seem daunting, but life has many risks. Why not take those risks on a beautiful mountain where the years melt away as one glides down a trail feeling young? For information on the Prime Time Club, check out: www.primetimeskiclub.com. To check out skiing trips with Joe Parent, check out: www.happytimetours.com or call 207-415-5165.
