“It has been amazing to watch Troy’s love for skiing develop into pure determination and dedication. His enduring passion, work ethic, and focus has been an inspiration to this community. We’re very excited to watch Troy over the course of the next few months, and beyond”.
John Kimble Director of Freestyle/Freeride/Freeskiing
It’s been said that skiing down an Olympic level mogul course is like riding a bucking bronco on roller skates down a cliff. But that may be the easiest part for an athlete like Bethel’s Troy Murphy as he tries to earn a spot on the Olympic team in Korea this February. With only sixteen men’s slots available to compete in one of the five freestyle disciplines (aerials, slopestyle, halfpipe, ski cross and moguls) the competition and training to make the final team is fierce. The year-round regimen — with trips to training sites in Australia, British Columbia, California, Switzerland, Utah, Colorado, France, Finland, China and Canada — requires a ridiculous amount of energy and commitment, as well as a mountain of cash. Over the years Troy and his parents, Nancy and Matt, have spent an immense amount of energy and resources to pursue this dream and now the finish line is only five months away. Troy’s parents love the western Maine mountains, so they moved from Southern Maine to Bethel to take jobs at Gould Academy when Troy was 5 years old. At age 10 Troy slid into the Gould/Sunday River ski program on weekends and holidays. The 8th grade winter semester at Gould was the obvious next step and that was the year Troy began to compete on the national and junior national ski circuit. During high school Troy’s talents at mogul skiing began to turn heads. Gould coaches Doug Horn, Brian Broderick and John Kimble worked with Troy to develop his potential on and off the slopes.
“I started working with Troy in June of 2010 after he graduated from Gould. He joined my “Planet Ski International” team (which at the time was based in Maine) and continued with us and also later with Park City Freestyle (where the team moved and with whom we partnered) until he qualified for the US Ski Team. I later coached for the US Team for about 2 years and worked with Troy there as well. Currently I am coaching again with my Planet Ski International team and supporting Troy on an informal basis.”
After graduating in 2010, Troy hooked up with Coach Glenn Eddy (who came (continued on 21)

Rock Garden launches Maine Mineral & Gem Museum’s Capital Campaign The museum experience begins outside, before even entering its doors.
by Jessica Siraco ccessible to the public any time of day, Maine Mineral & Gem Museum’s (MMGM) Rock Garden introduces Maine’s geology with 22 truly amazing geological specimens from around the State (and one mammoth specimen from outer space!). As an outside exhibit, the Rock Garden is already being utilized as a resource by regional school groups and introduces the museum’s mission: To communicate the significance of minerals in our lives, our planet and beyond.
A
The specimens in MMGM’s Rock Garden hold interesting stories. Some are wrapped in the state’s economic history of quarrying granite, marble and slate. Others tell of ancient oceans, no longer present on the planet. They are only detectable by the crustal fragments such as the pillow basalt specimen from Brooksville that accreted to the continent. Some specimens help us realize the immense pressures rocks endure as tectonic plates collide. The folded schist and quartzite specimen from Knox County clearly shows complex folds. Others remind us that there are more mysteries left to solve. The thirteen-ton glacial erratic is a metaconglomerate. We have yet to identify the origin of this rare rock type. Myles Felch, Assistant Curator, MMGM describes the Rock garden: “The specimens in the Rock

Garden contain a certain depth that can be appreciated by the grade school student, the historian, and the fledgling or expert geologist. No matter the knowledge level there is an opportunity for visitors to walk away with a new understanding and greater appreciation for Maine geology.” A special dedication ceremony of the Rock Garden was held in August to honor Arthur M. Hussey, PhD, who inspired all of us to think bigger, to be better and to collect a lot more rocks. Arthur was a long-time member of the Geological Society of America, the New England Intercollegiate Geological Conference, and a founding member on MMGM’s Board of Trustees.

“Visiting MMGM’s rock garden is like taking a field trip across the state.” Carl Francis, PhD, Curator, MMGM
Another outdoor recognition opportunity is our “Rock Garden Pavers” program. Purchasing a paver is one of the easiest and most memorable ways you can be a part of museum history by literally setting you name in stone. Availability is limited, so dig in today and don’t miss on your preferred paver location. Approximately 200 stones are available and prices range from $500-$2500.
This breathtaking display of large stones are both gifts and acquisitions designed to complement MMGM’s architecture. The specimens above are a sample of some of the unique Maine stones and are also available as part of the museum’s “Rock Star” recognition program. Donors will be acknowledged with a plaque next to the specimen sponsored. For current availability, and additional sponsorship

HUNGRY HOLLOW with Shirley Damm of West Paris
R
esidents of Western Maine (as well as the swarms of visitors this area caters to) often dread the seemingly endless drive that is Route 26. Is there a road in the state with more lumbering logging trucks and less places to pass? Sometimes it seems like the bumper to bumper traffic on 495 through Haverhill is magically transported to Norway; same vehicles, same folks, smaller road. But for those in the know there is an oasis at the midpoint between Gray and Bethel that takes the sting out of those Route 26 blues and makes dinner plans a snap. In 1965, when Robert Damm landed a job as the Director of The Maine State Museum in Augusta, he and his wife Shirley moved from Boise, Idaho to Manchester, Maine. In 1979 they bought a farm up to West Paris to raise apples, vegetables, herbs and perennials. The farm was so productive that within a few years they purchased a home on Route 26 and converted it into a farmer’s market, gift shop and crafter’s gallery. It seemed natural to Shirley that their store would offer pies and cookies, so she found a local source and added baked goods to the mix. When the baker she employed could knead no more, Shirley took over the baking on her own. After the Damms sold the apple farm, Shirley directed her (continued on 24)

Rut hie’s
BOUTIQUE
S
ituated at 88 Maine Street in Bethel, Ruthie’s Boutique is a special find for any woman seeking unique, stylish clothing and accessories. According to Ruthie running a clothing boutique is simple. “I’ve just worked my whole life,” she says. Anyone who knows anything about the retail clothing business realizes that successfully running a boutique is not that easy, yet Ruthie has done it for forty-two years, along with operating the Bethel Village Motel on the floor above the store. Her secret: she can’t remember a week when she didn’t work at least ninety hours. Of course, there are many other things that Ruthie Grover has been doing right for a long time. Bethel Living recently visited to find out more about Ruthie and her strategies for success in this remote western Maine area. Ruthie grew up on the Bear River side of Newry. She graduated from Gould Academy and attended the University of Maine at Farmington for two years as a home economics major. As a sophomore she went to work as a waitress in a restaurant on Main Street in Bethel next door to her current location, which housed a clothing store owned by a woman named Ruby and the motel. Ruthie’s restaurant boss and soon-to-be husband bought the motel/retail building for $8,000.00. They married and Ruthie bought out Ruby for the price of her fixtures and inventory.

Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com
by Cheryl Gillespie
Her husband set up a men’s shop on the left hand side, and on February 3, 1975, Ruthie’s Boutique opened on the right. They both ran the motel. Running a boutique proved to be a challenge at first. “I cried for days,” she now laughs as she tells the story of her shop to BL. She had shopped at Kneeland Street in Boston with Ruby for clothing lines like Alfred Dunner, but she knew that the needs of the women in the area had greatly changed since Ruby’s time. Then, affluent women and their children spent summers at the Bethel Inn or other elegant hotels in the area with their husbands taking the train on weekends to join them. These women bought evening gowns and dressy apparel from Ruby. When Ruthie took over, Sunday River Ski Area was just a small operation called Barker Mountain, the local mill was in economic trouble and the passenger train had stopped running. Summer visitors were dwindling. Ruthie had a big sale at the shop and then set about completely updating the merchandise. She started buying clothing at a show in Woburn, Massachusetts. With no formal training in textiles and merchandizing Ruthie found a salesman she trusted, consulted with her aunt (who was a buyer for Macy’s) and read every fashion magazine she could. In 1984 Ruthie’s husband passed and she was left to run the business and care for her young daughter on her own. She didn’t want to continue with the men’s shop, so she removed the wall between the two businesses, which doubled the size of her boutique. What is unique about Ruthie’s store? She is one of the rare small, independent Maine clothing store owners who still does her own buying. Chain stores are supplied by regional planners or merchandisers who buy from presentations at a company’s headquarters. With no say in what ends up on the shelves, salespeople may display a lackadaisical attitude about their merchandise. Ruthie buys from many different sources. She has invested time in buying her clothing and accessories and loves and knows about everything she tries to sell you. Also, Ruthie’s honesty about what looks good on you and what doesn’t is refreshing and helpful.
On the day BL visited Ruthie, she was busy unpacking and displaying a new fall line and setting up a sale of summer inventory with her new employee Anne Marie Saunders, a wonderful, smiling addition to the place. “You always get excited for the new stuff,” Ruthie said as she dashed into the stock room to fetch some color charts. She returned with examples of the newest shades for summer and fall and explained how the outfit she was wearing was made of flax — a chic material in a trendy color. This enthusiasm after all these years is obviously a big key to her success. Ruthie buys casual lines of clothing as she tells BL that women don’t dress up anymore, even for work. Popular lines are comfortable and designed to be layered. Tribal is a good seller. Skiers coming in are interested in Wooden Ships sweaters that are perfect for their lives in ski homes and condos. The Brighton line of jewelry and hand bags has been very well-liked. Sea Bags are selling well, with the “loon bag” being a biggie.

(continued from 6) from Carrabasset Valley Academy) to travel, compete and train with a small team of talented young skiers. Eddy soon went on to coach with the US Ski Team and Troy, who has been on the US Ski Team for the past five seasons, was lucky enough to join him. Troy became a National Champion in 2015 and this past year finished Top American and 6th in the World going into this next Olympic year. On average training days before a competition the team rises at 8am, enjoys a hearty breakfast and takes a mellow run on the course — no hard training happens the day before a competition. Traveling and training are Troy’s job, but as an Olympic athlete there is no salary to be earned. Because Troy is now on the A Team many of his fees and equipment costs are covered, but he still needs to pay for basic living expenses — like insurance, rent and food. The Troy Murphy Golf Tournament was created five years ago to help defray these expenditures. This year Troy will host the fundraiser
on October 8th at The Bethel Inn Resort, featuring a chance to win a new car with a hole in one. Any extra funds go to the Sunday River Ski and Snowboard Club. Donations made for the golf tournament are tax deductible. FMI on the golf tournament visit EventBright. com and search for 5th Annual Murphy Golf Tournament. Troy spends springs in Alaska filming and skiing back country with Blake Wilson and some other friends with Jannick Fjeldsoe as his videographer. To see some videos of Troy visit https://vimeo. com/172031840 and https://vimeo.com/194264755 FMI on Troy Murphy visit Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and keep your fingers crossed for a very successful season of competition!

Cinnamon Margarita INGREDIENTS • Fill glass with ice • Add 3.0z Cinnamon Tequila (we used Peligroso Cinnamon Tequila) • 1 oz triple sec • Fresh lime juice • Top with fresh apple cider • Shake well and rim glass with cinnamon and sugar!
INSTRUCTIONS Set oven to 350 degrees. For the crust, combine the dry ingredients with the melted butter. Press into the bottom of a 9in. springform pan and bake for 8 to 10 minutes until golden brown. Let cool on wire rack. Lower oven to 300 degrees. For the filling, add cream cheese and sugars to electric mixer and beat on high until soft and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Scrape down sides of bowl and add sour cream, vanilla, lemon juice and salt. (continued from 6) boundless faith and tremendous energy toward building the Hungry Hollow Country Store into the roadside treasure that nowadays makes people pull in every time they pass through. She expanded the bakery offerings from breads and cookies to chicken and beef pot pies. Both locals and tourists enjoyed the prepared dinners so much that the menu quickly grew to include Chicken Divan, quiches, side salads, soups, cakes and whoopee pies. The gift shop also expanded to offer a host of local crafters and a great selection of Burt’s Bees, Leanin’ Tree Cards, Legacy Gifts, Maine balsam fir pillows and nutrient supplements. Local honey, maple syrup and fresh cider in season compliment the old-fashioned wheel cheese, gourmet teas and gift baskets that fill every nook and cranny. Although Hungry Hollow itself is now up for sale, busy weeks find up to 7 employees turning 300 - 400 pounds of flour and 50 - 100

Everything is made from scratch and features the best quality ingredients. Each week more than 60 of the bestselling Chicken Pies go out the door; the Chicken Divan and Beef Pie follow as a close second and third. Every dish, from shepherd’s pie to gourmet meatloaf is beautiful, looks delicious and is sure to satisfy. Next time you just cannot drive another mile on Route 26, plan to stop in at the Hungry Hollow Country Store for a respite and pick up a meal to savor.
