Made in Bethel by Toby Winkler and Jake Bracy
Here is a primer on how stuff gets built in Maine. Take a marine engineer — Richard Tobias “Toby” Winkler — who spends half the year in the southern hemisphere on a 400’ hopper dredge (whatever that is) and show him a magazine article about some people out west trying to manufacture skis. Add in his cousin — Jacob Archer “Jake” Bracy — the engineer of a 550’ heavy lift ship plying the waters off Africa, and put them both into their great grandfather’s workshop down to Ye Olde Perkins Place (YOPP) on the York coast. There, these two guys that grew up skiing at Mount Abram, Shawnee Peak and Sunday River as daytrippers decide to reverse engineer some skis, which after you pull 6
Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com
them apart are clearly not that well made. So in 2011 a ski press was designed and built and YOPP Clandestine Skis were born. All skis are constructed like a high pressure sandwich, with the core — the meat — pressed into the center, giving the ski spring and liveliness. Many ski manufacturers make a cheap core using a lot of filler and epoxy. YOPP uses locally sourced Purple Heart, Ash and Poplar hardwoods to fashion an all wood core surrounded by layers of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene and a sintered, extruded base. It is this unique wood core in the heart of the ski that makes it pop on the snow. Moving out of the family workshop and into a new manufacturing facility in Bethel, they’ve built an improved 20ton hydraulic press where core-blocks are shaped, creating a very high-quality response. After the cores are cured the skis are hand crafted from base up and then put in a custom built press. After a half hour the skis are pulled, graphics are applied and topped off with some light finish work to complete the ski. YOPP recently produced 7 pairs of skis featuring custom personalized graphics in a single day — but that is not enough to keep up with the surge in orders going into the 2016/17 season. One perk of building your own skis is the fun of product testing
with your friends. Can riding the first chair to check out a new ski design hot off the press really be considered “work”? Jake’s girlfriend Kristine doesn’t think so. Last season she strapped into a pair of telemark skis with an unusually designed bulbous nose and cruised to first place in the Maine Telemark Festival. Keeping a stock of skis available for their local retail outlet at Sport Thoma, adding to their own demo fleet and filling orders from word-of-mouth networking means
the ski press has been working overtime all fall. Keep your eyes open on the lifts this season. If you happen to see a pair of skis with YOPP graphics you just may be riding to the top with the hottest ski makers in the Bethel area — a couple of marine engineers from York. An Exciting Season Ahead
An Exciting Season Ahead for Mt Abram in Greenwood
for Mt Abram in Greenwood
“Green” initiatives undertaken over the past few years have allowed Mt Abram to develop a sustainable business and the results are starting to show. Money saved through a solar-power project that provides 75% of the electricity required to operate the entire resort has been plowed back into what winter sport enthusiasts want most: new terrain and cutting edge snowmaking. State-of-the-art “airless” snow-guns will provide high-quality snow conditions across six new trails guaranteeing an impressive alpine experience for skiers and riders of all skill levels. Businesses from Kittery to Bangor are planning group ski dates and employee outings to boost morale — while recreational groups are signing up for multiple visits to Mt Abram during the winter season. Racing teams throughout Maine and New Hampshire have been leasing race course space for training and competitions citing the consistent conditions and charming new facilities like the heated pavilion on the Westside, built using timber milled on-site from trees cleared to make the new trails. The Terrain Park crew has brought on new talent to develop next-generation freestyle terrain and features. No matter how you like to slide, Mt Abram is 10
Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com
the family friendly place that keeps the mountain lifestyle fun and affordable. New terrain buzz is only part of the draw as the Mt Abram events calendar is constantly evolving to accommodate new ideas that engage local residents and tourists alike. Events like the Cause for Laughter, the World’s Largest Lesson and the Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge support grass-roots efforts to bring more participants into the culture of snow sports action. Annual traditions like the Fitch-Gilpatrick Memorial Race, Homecoming and Ski Club Auction, the Full Moon Snowshoe Hike and the Torchlight Parade and Family Night have brought friends and families together since the 1960s. Now, new initiatives like The
Baxter Outdoors race series will expose another generation of thrill seekers to unique activities such as ski-mountaineering and fat tire bike riding. After a day outside, the Loose Boots Lounge brings in eclectic live entertainment for guests who want to enjoy the après ski attitude and lifestyle, with great local musicians and bands starting around 3:30pm. Doubling down on the idea that being a good environmental citizen is good for business, the mountain’s green initiative for 201617 is focused on waste management. Mt Abram has partnered with neighboring Pleasant River Farms — a certified organic beef producer that is family-owned and operated by Dean and Deborah Richmond — to compost all food waste and compostable packaging products. A trip to this forward-looking resort will surely result in warm memories of snowy pleasures and a greater appreciation for the ways that energy saving technologies can benefit the snow sports industry now and into the future. Holiday Shopping in Bethel By Cheryl Gillespie
This is the year! You and your loved-ones are skiing this holiday season! If you have not garnered something for everyone on your holiday gift list, don’t worry, Bethel offers unique shopping opportunities. My husband and I have found the perfect gifts for all occasions in this village after a day of skiing. As you come into town, you are greeted with “Welcome to Bethel, proud home of the Telstar Rebels.” With that producing a warm smile on your face, get ready to enjoy the quaint mix of beautiful Victorian and Greek Revival buildings, many with store signs in front.
At 162 Main Street stands Philbrook Place, a collection of five different enterprises open Christmas Eve and other generous hours for your shopping convenience. Upon entering you are surrounded by gorgeous, handmade pieces of art and gifts in Elements Art Gallery. This shop guarantees that all things are Maine made. The choices are endless: jewelry, paintings, and decorations abound. Are you being hosted by someone who doesn’t have the perfect, framed photo of Sunday River Ski Resort? This is your place to find that in many different sizes. Would a moose mug fit the bill for someone who wants a big cup of joe or tea before hitting the slopes? Someone on your list might enjoy custom bobbie pins, bird gift boxes or balsam scented pillows. How about chapstick for your whole body made in Rangeley? A variety of greeting cards are available, too. Right beside Elements of Art in this lovely old barn is Bethel Toys and Trendz which offers quality, handcrafted classics. Depending on your age, this store might remind you of your childhood because the owners believe in promoting toys that do not require batteries. It is filled with Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com
15
puzzles, kites, dolls, and other toys that encourage imaginative play. There are many wonderful children’s books, including a grand selection of the now out-of-print Golden Books. Both Elements of Art and Bethel Toys will graciously wrap your gifts at no charge. Tucked in behind these two stores is Revival Boutique, a consignment shop of clothing, furniture and home accents. This shop will take you a while to browse through. It has jewelry, picture frames, snazzy red high heels among other footwear, and incredible vintage clothing. Little items like wine glass place holders and recipe scrapbooks are inviting. Do you have either a young hipster who has discovered the joys of vinyl or an old hippie who refuses to give up albums on your shopping list? Revival Boutique can help you here with their collection of pre-loved records. Flash back to 1981 to remember James Taylor’s Dad Loves his Work album. Too old? Pop ahead to 1990 with Ted Nugent and his Double Live Gonzo. Think those are for kids? Return to 1968 for Deep Purple’s first album or The Doors’ Waiting for the Sun. Those will bring back memories of man-sized amplifiers that rattled your ribcage at just the right volume! Upstairs from these three businesses in an open loft you find Community Sports and Little Bits Consignment, two places bulging with goods. Community Sports calls itself a new and used sports emporium. Great outdoor clothing and gear are available here for all-sized pocketbooks or wallets. If you have a young skier in the family, you know how quickly he or she grows out of gear without barely wearing it at all. This shop is for you. Little Bits Consignment runs on the same theory. Even though these things are previously owned, many items look like they have never been worn. Clothing up to kid size 8 is offered here, featuring a wide variety of baby articles. The newborn items alone will have you cooing. Once again, heed this warning. Do not think you can do this shopping center quickly. There is just too much to see at Philbrook Place!
Tucked behind these stores at 2 Mechanic Street, sits a bright, colorful shop called Nabos which offers gifts, clothes, toys and more. Nabos, meaning turnips in Spanish, is a quirky name for a delightfully unique store with a gracious owner named Amanda. Although the card collection is boundless here, Amanda would tell 16
Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com
you one of her best-selling items is handmade vegetable glycerin soap with an accompanying lift to properly drain and preserve the delicate soap cake. Maine authors are also highlighted here in Nabos with a great collection of books published by Islandport Press in Yarmouth, Maine. Amanda enjoys pointing out that one of the authors is a Bethel resident. Choices of jewelry, toys and distinctive clothing items are available. Children’s books that spark imagination and thinking are on the shelves. On your way out, take the opportunity to pet a gorgeous black female Lab whom Amanda proudly calls her marketing coordinator. This shop is worth turning off Main Street for a peek. Scoot back over to 88 Main Street and enter a store that has been a landmark for forty-two years in Bethel — Ruthie’s Boutique. Owner Ruthie is the absolute master of two things: gorgeous free gift wrapping and steering a clueless shopper to a beautiful gift for a mate, friend or relative. You step into this shop and think you are in the Old Port section of Portland, Maine. Announcing on her website that her store is the place for fashion in the mountains, Ruthie’s carries such lines as Brighton, Tribal, Nic + Zoe, and Krimson Klover. Ruthie will tell you that sweaters are her bestsellers, but she has much more. Jackets, hats, scarves, jewelry and handbags, to name just a few items. You will not see someone else carrying the clutch you received from Ruthie’s or wearing the same tunic sweater you purchased there. Many items are shopped for in Europe by Ruthie on a buyer’s trip. This gives her selection that one-of-a-kind feeling. A gift purchased and wrapped at Ruthie’s will stand out in a crowd of presents. Across the street and a bit diagonally up from Ruthie’s at 73 Main Street, you will find another Bethel institution, Brooks Brothers’ True Value Store. Ruthie chuckles and tells you this is where she sends antsy husbands while she wraps gifts for their wives. Opened as a hardware store in 1940 and then associated with True Value by 1980 or so, this store will surprise you with gift item possibilities. Just inside the door stands a For Tea’s Sake display with pretty mugs, loose leaf tea accoutrements and cans of teas with names like Mint Condition, Shades of Earl Grey and
Let’s Chai. There is a section of coat and hat hooks with bears, moose and loons on them, a Bullshit Corner rod-iron placard, and adorable little decorations for garden or fairy house displays. A serious skier might enjoy an autographed copy of We Jumped by Robert and Thomas Remington available here. This book, penned in 2015, is about the ski jumping history of the 1950s through 1980s in Maine and New Hampshire as experienced by the authors and their father Clarence “Rocking Chair” Remington. All profits gained from the sale of this book will go to the Ski Museum of Maine. Of course, if you are in a condo and need something along the hardware line, Brooks Brothers can help you there too, with cordial smiles on their faces. Don’t just walk by. Two other stores on this side of the street that might be of interest are the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum at 99 Main and Art @ 57 Maine at 57 Main Street. Both shops offer wonderful looks at history and learning or art experiences through classes. They also have beautiful handmade gift items for sale. Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is your place for jewelry or granite items such as cheese boards. Art @ 57 Maine also provides pieces of art, jewelry and metal crafts. Just a couple buildings up from Art @ 57 Maine, you can find Maine Line Products, Inc. This is one of their two stores. The other is at 297 Main Street in Greenwood, just down Route 26 from Bethel. Here at Maine Line Products you find incredible handmade fudge sold by the pound for $11.99 or smaller amounts for less. Flavors like mint swirl or maple are tasty. This counter also displays Maine-made Needhams. There are hats and tee shirts, but the edibles such as Out on a Limb raspberry jam might make your mouth water. Do you need something really unusual for that person who wants to go home bragging about the true “Maine” experience? How about a CD entitled Wonderful Old Two-Holer,
Gramp Lyford’s Country Salve or even Moose Dropping earrings? Maine Line Products will make up baskets with cans of chowder,
jams, honey or other Maine delectables that you can have sent to someone. What could be easier? Visit on Maine Line Weekend which is December 10th & 11th. If you simply haven’t found exactly what you need for a fussy person on your list, there are places to consider just outside of Bethel village. SportThoma on the Mayville Road / Route 2 is a huge store of sports equipment, clothing and accessories. There are ski shops on the access road or Sunday River Road as well. The Sunday River Ski Shops on the mountain itself have great selections. One last stop to consider is Sunday River Gems at 251 Sunday River Road, open Thursday through Sunday from 12 to 5p.m. Charlie Bean will welcome you to his gem store —it’s the perfect après ski shopping choice. Here you will find choices of gems, jewelry and gifts that will amaze. Geode bookends might be just right for that picky person who thinks he or she already has everything. Shops in and around Bethel display respect for products organically grown or naturally produced by local Maine people as well as preloved, recycled things. They stock distinctive, quality items. Holiday shopping in this mountain area is what eco-friendly consumerism should be. Please consider coming back after the holidays for the “wicked” sales.

ken irons Commercial & Fine Artist Local artist Ken Irons saw a lot of the United States from the Marine bases where his father was stationed, but the family house in South Paris always drew him back. During Ken’s own ten year stint with the Marines he took the opportunity to attend mountain and desert warfare school — as well as airborne school. But the endeavor he enjoys most — creating art — has been mastered over the years without any formal training. Perhaps that’s why there are no limits to the types of materials he uses when envisioning a new project. Whether a composition calls for paint and canvas or a chainsaw and a log, Ken seems comfortable turning the stuff at hand into a unique and meaningful piece. In addition to his passion for art Ken’s job working for Community Concepts in the Mutual Self-Help Housing Program allows him to create in another way. Teaching and mentoring individuals and families with few homebuilding skills, Ken guides them through the process of constructing their own home. From the completion of a loan application, through the planning and site work phases and right into
the nitty gritty of framing and finish work, Ken helps people harness their desire to build their own home with the knowhow and support to make it happen. In his capacity as an advisor Ken provides mostly technical and supervisory assistance to participating families — they purchase the building materials and do the actual construction. Yet looked at from a certain angle, channeling his clients desires into the creation of a new house is simply another extension of the art that fills his world. Judging by the number of requests for new artwork as Ken approaches his 60th year, it looks as though the most prolific season of his career lies ahead. One recently completed commission, a 6 foot long solid wood mantle with deer, moose, trout and black bears populating a forest motif displays his sculpting proficiency with chainsaw and dremel. Keep your eyes open around town and you will see Ken’s hand in the execution of many glass etchings, air brushed nature scenes, digital illustrations and pen and ink drawings that grace a variety businesses, homes and vehicles.
