Publisher’s Note As we go to press with Issue 26 of Bethel Living, there is still plenty of snow on the ground. Ski trails remain covered while warm weather and longer days breeze into the area. Soon enough, the landscape will burst into verdant excess as we tune bikes and uncover kayaks. The Bethel Historical Society has big plans for the town’s 250th Anniversary this summer. Read about the goings-on, and find out how weddings and events will keep Trail’s End busy up at Sunday River. Cheryl Gillespie reports on resort workers in Liftie Life — profiling the crew that keeps the lifts turning. Erin Mitchell talks with us about her career as a body worker and healer, and we deliver delicious new recipes from Brian’s on Main Street. As always, Deanne Bodemer gives us a new spring list of events for updating our calendars. My production support team is wonderful, as are my advertisers, readers and subjects — you all make knocking together this magazine a joy, not a task. Every day I hear from friends and local folks who are as thrilled to live here as I am. Bethel and it’s surrounding villages, mountains, rivers and plains are where it’s at!

T

he area we all know as “Bethel” was established as a township in 1768 in the “District of Maine” — Maine then being a part of Massachusetts and not yet a state. Accordingly, the folks in charge of the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society have created “Bethel250 Series,” a panoply of special events, projects and programs — including a musical tribute to old songs of the logging camps of New England and Canada on April 22, and an afternoon symposium (on June 9, the actual anniversary date) exploring the founding of Bethel, an event whose origins stem from a failed British attack on Quebec City in 1690. A time capsule marked the 200th anniversary of Bethel’s incorporation in 1996, and for this observance MBHS has chosen a different — perhaps more traditional way — of commemorating the anniversary of the town’s founding. Thanks to the needlework skills of trustee Donna Sheerin Gillis, a colorful three-panel autograph quilt has been created that will (for a small fee) allow individuals to memorialize the name of a friend, a loved one or a favorite pet on a beautiful example of the textile arts, which will be permanently preserved in MBHS’s new Valentine Wing at Robinson House on Broad Street.

Volunteer Tom Davis demonstrates the 1840 seraphine (reed organ) in the Mason House parlor to 1st grade students from nearby Crescent Park School.

A second substantial tribute tied to the 250th anniversary will be the construction of a replica of the office/library which once stood on the side lawn of Dr. Moses Mason’s 1813 residence, now an MBHS museum. Made possible by the very generous gift of a 16-by-20 foot FMI on the Museums of the timber frame from Bethel Historical Society, visit Scott Campbell of bethelhistorical.org or call Maine Mountain (207) 824-2908 Post & Beam in Fryeburg, a public “raising” of the structure will take place on July 7, 2018, during the Bethel Art Fair. When completed with funds provided by the family of the late Roxanne Twitchell Sly, the “Twitchell Education Center” will be used for summer exhibits, demonstrations, and lectures. Over the coming months, the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society will once again host numerous events synonymous with the 50+ yearold organization, such as the Independence Day Community Concert by the Portland Brass Quintet, and the ever-popular “Mornings at the Museum” children’s activities taking place at a variety of locations throughout July. Additional highlights of the “Bethel250 Series” include new exhibits about the White Mountain National Forest (celebrating its centennial this year), the history of skiing in Oxford County (in the Ski Museum of Maine’s new “Western Mountains Gallery”), and a recounting of the famous 10th Mountain Division formed in 1943 to fight in northern Italy.

On May 29, an art show and sale entitled “The White Mountains: Alps of New England” will open at the Robinson House, followed a month later by “Rediscovering the White Mountains of Maine,” a program cultivated by MBHS Executive Director Randall H. Bennett. Lectures scheduled for later in the year will focus on Telstar Regional High School’s 50th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I — among other subjects. Keepers of the past and collectors of the present, the staff and volunteers at MBHS invite all to join them in marking Bethel’s 250th anniversary in ways

To pinpoint the precise location of Dr. Moses Mason’s 19th century office/library (to be reconstructed this summer), Gould Academy students undertook an archaeological survey based on an 1858 map of Broad Street.

Liftie Life:

the View from the Other Side of the Chair

by Cheryl Gillespie

I

f they do their job well, the safety coordinator/ ambassador at the top and bottom of each lift tend not to be noticed by the thousands of people they serve every day. However, if you come to the mountain on a regular basis, chances are you may recognize the person who offers a cheerful greeting each morning and a helpful hand throughout the day. And as you enjoy the ride up to your favorite trail you may wonder what it’s like to be the person who helps guests onto the chairlift or invites them to step into the Chondola after placing their skis in the rack. Who are these ‘lifties’, where do they come from and why do they choose to be employed in this capacity? As always, Bethel Living has the answers! Darcy Lambert, Director of Communications at the Sunday River Resort, provided some interesting statistics garnered from Jon Pasternak, the Manager of Safety and Lift Operations. Sunday River traditionally hires 80 to 90

14

Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com

operators and up to 20 ticket checkers each season. Roughly 75% of lift operators are local people. This season seven are from Peru, while in the past operators have hailed from Australia, South Africa, Columbia and Brazil. Ten percent of the staff are true veterans, with Jon himself having the longest tenure at 20+ years. The majority of lift operators are between the ages of 18 and 25, with the average age being 24. Jon reports that there are also a handful of young retirees who work one or two days a week. Bottom terminal lift operators typically work in pairs and have the option of taking runs for an hour or half hour. They get paid to ski and ride! Top lift operators work longer shifts in huts with amenities. While this information provided an overview, BL wanted to get more personal. Darcy and

Jon graciously set up an interview with Lift Ops Supervisor Dean Stowell and two of his staff to open a window into liftie life. Dean, who has skied on the mountain since a very young age, stressed that safety and customer relations are the top priorities for lift operators. Groups of visitors from places as diverse as Canada, Britain, Russia and Massachusetts arrive each week with different expectations about ‘friendliness’. Operators need to be sensitive to each group, as well as understanding the different needs of young skiers, adaptive guests and anyone new to the sport. Sergio Rousselin, a Guatemalan transplant who now lives in Andover, says he has to read people and figure out how friendly they want their lift operators to

be; some like a conversation while others just want a smile. Josh Lebowitz — who delivered his outlook with a charming grin flashing through his manicured, ZZ Top style red beard — noted that most skiers and riders are amiable and courteous. “This has become a lifestyle for me,” he added, “there’s a sense of community. I read people to see what they need.” Both men enjoy dealing with the kids. Sergio says he loves watching them from the top of Barker lift as they show no fear. Over at Aurora, Josh sees fewer young kids, but the ones who do show up are usually quite accomplished. He says, “Kids make the day go by. They need our focus.” Sergio laughs about how the kids love to joke and tease. Dean and Darcy also

Mind:Body:Harmony with Erin Mitchell, Body Worker

INSPIRING MIND, BODY & SOUL The Integrative Body As a licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Master and certified Bowen Practitioner, Erin Mitchell has a strong belief in the body’s wisdom to heal itself and propagates this doctrine through advanced integrated bodywork. As a Health Strategist she has a strong belief in the body’s innate ability to heal itself. She has also seen the mind’s ability to affect positive change and physical healing through Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT for short. These modalities, used in tandem, guide Erin’s clients along a clearly defined path to wellness. Erin came to the Bethel area from Cape Cod when she fell in love with the Mt Abram area two years ago. She moved from the mid-coast to the mountains to hike and ski, garden and dance and live a clean lifestyle. Erin is a natural, nurturing bodyworker and coach who has a gift for listening to her clients. She works holistically with the body, mind and spirit to promote a shift toward vitality. After studying massage at the New Hampshire Institute for Therapeutic Arts in Bridgton, Erin began building her practice in Newcastle, Maine where she noticed that many of her patients had recurring problems which could be repaired on the table but would recur in time. A hip issue of her own lead to a Bowen treatment, a therapy which originated in Australia. The fix worked so well that she was inspired to learn the technique to share with her clients. She uses this approach often because of the amazing results on and off the table. Clients can stay clothed for the Bowen treatments, which are appropriate for everybody. (continues on page 28)

Spring Recipes from Brian’s on Main Street in Bethel

Aaahhh, spring! The time when one amazing winter season ends and a new one begins in Bethel. As the snow melts, we start to see the muddy remnants of last year’s garden. Time to plan the new crop and get lighter with the cuisine! Brian is including his recipe for his heirloom tomato relish. Great for fish, but you can use it for bruschetta or even top it on a salad. Fresh, light, clean and super delicious....and easy to prepare!

Tomato Relish

Ingredients

• 8 oz Heirloom Tomatoes-Diced • 1 tsp Fresh Garlic-Minced • 2 Tbs Fresh Cilantro-Chopped • Juice of 1 Lemon • 1 Tbs Lemon Zest • Splash red Wine Vinegar • Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Directions

Mix all ingredients in a bowl, salt & pepper to taste. Let sit at room temperature for 1/2 hour before serving. Voila!

Brian and Jess Nichols opened Brian’s on Main St in Bethel a little over a year ago. They both bring over 25 years of restaurant experience to Bethel. Stop in and enjoy their unique menu, friendly staff, and a great craft beer, bottle of wine or delicious cocktail! Brian & Jess reside in Hanover with their daughter, Sophia.

Cheryl Gillespie is involved in an anthology entitled Compassionate Journey: Honoring Our Mothers’ Stories. It is due out in paperback and kindle form, available on Amazon in the middle of April. For more information, please visit the Facebook page: https://www.facebook. com/honoringourmothersstories

commented about how safe the mountain is for young kids to ski on their own — where not only lifties — but all Sunday River employees work to ensure a secure environment. Darcy talked about how the ski school programs teach lift etiquette to make kids feel confident and secure. When the mountain is busy, lift operators do not have a moment to spare. Josh and Sergio maintain constant vigilance, watching for people not paying attention as they load or exit the lift. Josh relates that he has found people asleep on the lift! Occasionally, guests get in over their heads when choosing trails to challenge their abilities. This happens most often at lift #10 which feeds such runs as White Heat and Shockwave. The top shack attendant has to keep an eye out and may suggest that people try an easier way down, or perhaps ride the chair back to the bottom if they seem overwhelmed. Always on the lookout for new employees, Jon wants everyone to know, “No matter what someone is looking for, there is always something for everyone at Sunday River. It is much more than a job or a paycheck. It can be a lifetime of fulfillment if you work for it!” On top of getting

free ski passes, mountain employees enjoy food and retail discounts. The work atmosphere is congenial and aesthetically pleasing, while the free Sunday River uniforms are comfortable and warm. Adds Jon, “Parents, encourage your kids to apply and support them by helping them work if they want to. The experience is a crucial introduction to the working world, and we cherish the opportunity to be your children’s first employer.” Next time you ride a lift at Sunday River take time to smile and say thanks to the operator who is helping you. Let them know they have made your mountain experience as enjoyable as possible. C

About Bowen Therapy Bowen is a holistic remedial body technique that works on the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body. Bowen therapy can be used to treat musculoskeletal or related neurological problems including acute sports injuries and chronic or organic conditions. It is gentle and relaxing and does not use forceful manipulation. Bowen therapy is performed on the superficial and deep fascia. The fascia is a type of connective tissue that envelops, separates and influences every organ and muscle in the body. The Bowen technique is safe to use on anyone, from newborns to the elderly, and addresses any musculoskeletal or related neuromuscular complaint. It is a holistic treatment for the entire person which aims to ameliorate the causes of problems, rather than the symptoms.

About Reiki Therapy Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through and animates us. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then one is more likely to get sick or feel stress; if it is high, one is more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy”. Reiki treatments feel like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around the body. Reiki rejuvenates the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

Erin also offers heath and wellness coaching, working with Ayerveda practices to create harmony and healing through behavior modification and promoting healthy habits, such as: earlier lighter dinners, earlier bedtimes, earlier rising times, breath and body movement practices with intention, meditation, eating a plant-based diet, living a life at ease by allowing things to happen around you but not to you, stress reduction through relaxed mindset, body massage with oil after a shower and clearing your senses through oil pulling. This program is conducted for a group of people over the course of a year, divided into 10 week periods. Participants learn and internalize healthy habits, working together on areas that might be challenging. The program offers retreats, workshops and webinars that transform the group with validity and integrity. Unrewarding habits are broken and individual growth is stimulated. C

About Emotional Freedom Techniques Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, is the psychological acupressure technique routinely used in Erin’s practice to optimize emotional health. Although often overlooked, emotional health is absolutely essential to physical health and healing — no matter how devoted one is to the proper diet and lifestyle, a person cannot access their body’s ideal prophylactic and healing powers if emotional barriers stand in the way. EFT is easy to learn, and will help: • Remove Negative Emotions • Reduce Food Cravings • Reduce or Eliminate Pain • Implement Positive Goals EFT is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments for over 5,000 years -- without the invasiveness of needles. Instead, simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input kinetic energy onto specific meridians along the head and chest while the subject thinks about their specific problem — whether it is a traumatic event, an addiction, pain or some other distress — while voicing positive affirmations.
