My name is Eric Richardson of RCO Tile & Stone located in beautiful downtown Lincoln. I’d love to put my 30 years’ experience to work for you in designing the perfect outdoor living space for you and your guests! Let’s start with some helpful information when it comes to selecting the perfect outdoor kitchen and table countertops. There are several types of materials to consider when it comes to choosing a durable, beautiful stone. Sintered porcelain slabs are becoming most popular for outdoor entertainment and kitchen areas because they are maintenance-free and worry-free of staining or fading. They come in many natural shades and finishes, including some that look just like marble! While granite has traditionally been the top choice for outdoor entertainment areas, the type of stone you choose can make a difference in the beauty and longevity of the finish. What you may not know is, most granite slabs available in the market today are resin-filled. Over time, resin is
6
subject to breakdown and failure from UV light exposure. The good news is, I can assist you in selecting beautiful resin-free slabs, which are also available in many natural colors and patterns. When it comes to resin-free granite, I highly recommend using a 3 cm stone (1 ¼” thickness) because it will save you from having to install a plywood sub-top and thus, would not require lamination to the edge detail. As with resin, lamination is affected by prolonged UV exposure. You might be surprised that 3 cm stone offers the same desired appearance as thicker stone with laminated edges. It is important to note that even resin-free granite left in direct sunlight will absorb heat to the point it can be too hot to touch. Be sure to make color choices that are lighter as opposed to darker, as the darker stone tends to absorb and hold more heat. Sintered porcelain and granite are the best choices when it comes to enduring the outdoor elements. Never use quartz for your outdoor counter-
CALIFORNIA RENOVATION MAGAZINE | APRIL 2016
tops and tables, as all quartz is resin-based and meant to be used indoors. Now that you know the pros and cons of choosing the perfect stone for your outdoor mini-resort, let’s start planning your design and make your dream a reality! Start sending the invites to your friends and family! Speaking of invites, come on by the beautiful RCO Tile & Stone showroom to say hello and view our latest selections of sintered porcelain and granite stone! Or, give me a call and we’ll set a free, in-home consultation. You’ll be glad you did!

PAVERS From stone walkways and edging, to driveways, patios, and pool decks, there are many outside areas that can benefit from the elegance and stamina of pavers. Whether you’re looking to add old world charm to your driveway or contemporary flare to your patio, pavers, made from natural stone, brick, and concrete, come in a variety of shapes and styles to for any outdoor setting. According to Tony Bumgardner, RCO Outdoor Living Specialist, pavers are slowly (but surely!) growing in popularity. “Pavers are the best option for failed concrete, and with continued public awareness, they are growing in popularity exponentially,” he said. There are several benefits to pavers including no cracks, four times as string as concrete, better aesthetically pleasing, can be lifted to perform repairs, and they are nonslip wet and dry. And there are more benefits. “If installed correctly, they can last thousands of years,” said Bumgardner. They also add value to your home. “Think of it in terms of replacing cracked concrete. Replacing concrete has zero return on investment as you’re replacing like for like, but pavers (because of their durability and curb appeal), add value.”
PAVERS IN EUROPE Approximately 30% of European streets are paved in stone and only 3% of the United States is, due to cost and awareness. Interlocking pavers were invented by the Dutch after World War II, when brick, their traditional paving material, was in short supply. Billions of the chunky blocks found their way onto European roads, and many of the originals are still in good shape, despite 50+ years of traffic. Needless to say, pavers often come with a lifetime warranty. CALIFORNIA RENOVATION MAGAZINE | APRIL 2016

@landscape ARTIFICIAL GRASS For Californians, the drought has taken a toll on the landscape. But that shouldn’t keep yards from looking beautiful with synthetic grass. While the name may not be attractive, it has enhanced the look of landscaping for several.Aside from the drought option, artificial grass has many benefits including little, if any maintenance. You will save on the cost of water and operating a lawn mower, it is long-lasting so you can avoid the hassels of replanting, and it offers good drainage which means you won’t have to worry about puddles of water collecting, leaving mud spots. What are some things people should consider when thinking of going synthetic? “The length of blade and the face weight is the real factor to consider,” said Bumgardner. “In harsh conditions, such as trees that drop, and pets, you would want a lower profile turf or shorter blade for cleaning reasons.”
OUTDOOR FURNITURE When it comes to outdoor living, furniture is a vital component to the environment. If you might be entertaining over the summer, a table set would work well. Or simply adding a sofa and chairs around a fire pit to create an inviting and comfortable atmosphere. But where do you start? “It all depends on budget and what you’re looking for,” said Tony Bumgardner. “I prefer wicker, it’s the best solution for long-term outdoor furniture. The most difficult thing you will encounter with wicker would be the cushions, which can be changed regularly.” Another item Bumgardner recommends is wrought iron or powder-coated aluminum, which will last a very long time. “The only maintenance you would have to do with that, is paint it,” said Bumgardner. Teak is furniture is a great way to go if your furniture is poolside. The powder-coated furniture is highly water resistant, and lasts a long time without scratching or fading.

WA & THE REAL TWIN PEAKS by Diana Stavroulakis
When Showtime announced they would be airing season three of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s trailblazing television series, Twin Peaks, I decided to take the trip to North Bend, Washington, that I had been planning for the last 25 years. I marked time off from my law practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and booked a flight, destination: Sea-Tac Airport. As the pilot announced we were 50 miles out, I looked out the window and got my first glimpse of the magical woods below. Under Lynch’s unmistakable direction, those woods were transformed into a central character in the series. I headed east in my rental car and noticed the traffic gradually thin as the trees became closer to the road and eventually
18
met over the highway. Turning off Railroad Avenue, I followed a driveway that circled in front of my hotel: The Great Northern. Except, in the world that exists outside Lynch’s bucolic Twin Peaks, it is known as The Salish Lodge. (salishlodge.com). The gracious staff supplied a map clearly marking Twin Peaks landmarks, along with my room key. The Salish is perched atop Snoqualmie Falls. Observation decks offer different vantage points of the falls as it makes its 268 foot descent into a gorge, then breaks over a bed of huge rocks. It was mesmerizing watching it continuously power down a drop that is 100 feet higher than Niagara Falls. I hiked down the 1.5 mile trail that goes to its base, and at just the right spot I snapped a
CALIFORNIA RENOVATION MAGAZINE | APRIL 2016
picture of The Salish Lodge nestled above the falls. As night approached, a mist formed at the bottom which developed into a thick fog that crept upward until it concealed the falls from view. My next stop was The Double R Diner, better known to the locals as Twede’s Café. (twedescafe.com) Recently renovated to its former glory for the filming of season three, the diner emits a 50’s era charm with swivel stools around the center counter, booths lining both walls and a jukebox positioned by the entry-way. I grabbed a seat and ordered a slice of cherry pie and a cup of coffee. My waitress grinned while positioning my coffee mug so I could read it: Twede’s Cafe,
Home of Twin Peaks Cherry Pie. The pie was delicious and the coffee was damn fine. I bought two of the mugs before leaving. The next day, I set out to explore familiar filming sites: Twin Peaks High School (Mt. Si High School); Ronette’s Bridge – (Renig Bridge -currently a foot bridge); Laura’s Log-proudly displayed in town; The Roadhouse (Falls City Roadhouse); the remaining smokestack of the Packard Saw Mill (formerly Snoqualmie Falls Lumber Company Mill); The Blue Diamond Motel (Mt. Si Motel); and the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department (currently the Dirt Fish Rally School). I went inside the Sheriff’s Department and took a picture of what still looked like Lucy’s receptionist area. A man inside said hello then went about his business,
unaffected by my presence. When the clouds lifted off the mountain tops, I located the spot where the Welcome To Twin Peaks, Population 51,201 sign greeted FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper -- Lynch’s eccentric and beloved protagonist -- as he arrived in town. A couple visiting from Russia was also pulled to the side of the road at this spot. Despite the language barrier, it was understood we were on the same pilgrimage to Lynch’s Holy Land. We took turns taking each other’s picture standing along that winding rural road, Mt. Si towering behind us. On my last night, I browsed the Salish Lodge gift shop. It was stocked with plenty of Twin Peaks paraphernalia: pillows shaped like logs; magnets with famous lines from the show;
owls of all shapes and sizes; jars of Cherry Pie Filling; and 12oz. bags of Twin Peaks Blend Coffee -dark, rich and mysterious. In the lobby, a gentleman approached the front desk and saluted the staff. None other than David Lynch had been staying at the Salish Lodge. I thanked him for creating the surreal world of Twin Peaks and he put his arm around my shoulder, pulling me in for a picture. “We better make sure it’s a good one,” he said, studying it on my iPhone. After a few minutes, he nodded then offered, in a voice not unlike Agent Gordon Cole from the series, “This is a good one. We’ll see you again soon, now.”

THE AUBURN HOME SHOW by Kelsey Wehsels 1. The Auburn Home Show is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year. What was the show like in the beginning? How has it developed since then? The first shows could be described as “Mom and Pop” shows. They were small with under 200 vendors per show. For a first time producer, it was a large undertaking. The expectation was that since Auburn is a small albeit charming city, it would not be able to draw many attendees. However, we welcomed about 15,000 attendees and was met with significant approval Over time, the spring show earned the position of second largest home show in Northern California and the fall show is the largest home show in Northern California. The Home Shows are family owned and operated. Michael, the co-owner and general manager is a 5th generation from Auburn which reinforces the commitment to the success of the shows. 2. Tell me about yourself. What motivated you to start the Auburn Home show? This is a second career for myself. I took an early retirement and several years working in the personnel area of the State and eventually worked in a statewide firefighter apprenticeship program involving recruitment and testing. During that time, my niece worked with event production and eventually began home shows in Phoenix AZ, that evolved to major events. She was living in Placer County at the time and she began the Auburn Home Shows. She and her family moved out of state 20
CALIFORNIA RENOVATION MAGAZINE | APRIL 2016
and she sold them to me right during the end of her first year. I had some peripheral experience in conferences, trade shows, and conventions. To be honest, I didn’t know what I was getting into but my niece was a fantastic mentor. I went from civil service to private business to a very unique industry. 3. What amazing (noteworthy) displays/events have you had in the past? My home shows have been known for beautiful landscape display, partially due to placing them in a natural, parklike setting. In the 40 shows, the shows hosted some TV celebrities. During one show the shows bought and gave away a buildable lot. Some of the attendees were skeptical and thought it might be a scam but it was all legitimate. Another show featured a real estate auction. However, the pride of my shows are the quality of vendors we have. I particularly like the introduction of new products and services and especially start-up businesses that want to kick-start their company. 4. What are you expecting this year and what plans do you have for this year (we will say there will be a secret, fun event at this years show- Attend to find out!) Since this is our 20th anniversary, we plan to go BIG. Basalite is sponsoring a huge giveaway, an outdoor patio and kitchen. Other companies will add onto to the prizes, such as a 40” TV from RCO (or however you want to be listed). For the first time, a company
will be filling the entire Miner’s building. For this show, RCO has renamed the building as the California Renovations Building, displaying home renovations of flooring, window coverings, cabinets, countertops, home automation, and TVs. Outside is not forgotten with their artificial turf and pavers; granite frabrication will be demonstrated and a putting contest will be held with lots of prizes. The second annual Landscapers Challenge will be held and displays will be voted on by attendees. The chef’s cooking demos will feature Mason Partak, the 12 year old winner of the TV program Chopped Junior. The chefs will participate in the Farmers Market Chopped – Auburn Home Show Style. This show will transform an area to the Prize and Giveaway Plaza where lots of prizes will be given away. For additional information, visit www. AuburnHomeShows.com. For the first time, a second event will be held at the same time, the first Nor Cal Recreation Show. Attendees will be able to attend two shows for one price. 5. What do you have planned for the Fall show? Although the Fall Show (Sept 29-Oct 2) is months away, we already have fantastic plans. This show will again feature tiny houses but in a much, much bigger way. Already 25 tiny homes, Yurts, Dome homes have reserved spots in the show. It will be huge and along with that will be a HUGE giveaway, announcement to come later. 6. Anything else you would like to add? Part of the success of the show is the venue, the Auburn Fairgrounds. With the rolling lawns and towering trees, it creates a comfortable shopping atmosphere.

THE BILETNIKOFF FOUNDATION & TRACEY’S PLACE OF HOPE CONSTRUCTING HOMES FOR AT-RISK YOUTH
Devoted to helping young and at-risk teens find shelter, Fred Biletnikoff, the retired NFL super star and MVP of Super Bowl XI, started The Biletnikoff Foundation in honor of his daughter, Tracey. Becoming involved with crystal meth and heroin at a young age, she had checked herself into rehab by the tender age of 18. She fought her addictions until age 20, when she became a drug counselor for teens. In a fight with her ex-boyfriend, who she met in rehab, she was strangled and was murdered. Remembering that Tracey had once mentioned she had noticed the shelters she went to usually housed women with an average age of 40, she was off-put as she was only 18. Fred, and his wife, Angela, decided to start a foundation geared towards young people, providing them with education programs to adequately address problems of substance abuse and domestic violence. Three years ago, the Biletnikoff Foundation acquired Koinonia Homes for
Teens, a non-profit organization devoted to housing teens recovering from drug abuse. After the foundation took over, they started Tracey’s Place of Hope in Placer County and immediately began construction to create a safe haven and encourage healing for askrisk girls from 14-17. Koinonia Homes for Teens currently has four houses in addition to the one being remodeled in Placer County. Originally wanting to build a home from the ground up, Koinoni offered the Biletnikoffs an existing home that needed to be fixed up. They instantly jumped on the opportunity and have felt incredible support from the community. “It’s an army of people,” said Ron Loder Jr., owner of Loder Construction, the company supervising the construction. “So many local companies and individuals have stepped up to help contribute. It’s amazing.” Tracey’s Place of Hope is designed so the girls have a large kitchen to learning cooking and culinary skills, arts and crafts, a library,
counseling, medical and psychological help, and a private school. In addition to offering counseling and support services for struggling teens, The Biletnikoff Foundation offers $50,000 in scholarships to the best and brightest in academics.

Whether you’re moving into a new home or giving an older home a face-lift, important decisions have to be made on selecting new window coverings. However, there’s catch-22 when selecting window coverings: most window covering sales people are not interior designers, and most designers have limited knowledge of window coverings. With the help of Sherrie Swass of Swass Interior Design, we’ve compiled a list of ideas to be aware of before you take the big step. CALIFORNIA RENOVATION MAGAZINE | APRIL 2016

@style LOOK AT WHERE YOUR WINDOWS ARE PLACED. Do the windows expose a beautiful back yard… or do you view a 3’x12’ dog run? If you look out onto a beautiful back yard, you want your window coverings to enhance your view by making your eyes look out beyond the window. Therefore whatever the window covering is, it needs to be functional yet also muted in such a way that it does not attract attention. If your back yard is a dog run you might select something colorful so your eyes stay within the confines of the given room. BE AWARE OF WALL SPACE. Is there plenty of wall space on all sides of the windows to stack back the window coverings so your windows will be totally when the coverings are fully opened? This can definitely alter your decision-making. CONSIDER CEILING HEIGHT. How much room is available above the window to mount a head rail if it is considered an OB installation (outside window installation)? How much room do you have to install an IB installation (inside window installation)? Both installations have issues. A knowledgeable window-covering specialist will discuss pros and cons with you with your particular needs. This isn’t a “one right way” design situation. HARD VS. SOFT. Do you know the difference between hard and soft window coverings? If not, make sure you set aside some time to research. BE SURE TO STACK UP. Do you understand the stacking concept? Stacking applies to and concerns both horizontal and vertical window coverings. Stacking is also pertinent for hard and soft window coverings. Window covering professionals can give you the information on all products. There are charts and formulas for all products with concern to stacking. This is also an extreme issue with newer homes that seem to have wall-to-wall windows.

SELECTION OF WINDOW COVERINGS.
The selection of window coverings can, unfortunately, be extremely confusing. There is a practical side to the products, such as sun control and privacy, and an aesthetic side, which is the designer side. “There is a fine line between what looks the best versus what is practical. Since I am a professional designer with over 25 years of window covering experience I struggle with these issues on a daily basis. Bottom line: you will live in the home. You need to know the pros and cons of all products and how they affect your everyday living,” says Swass. Unless you start planning your home furnishing selection months in advance, most people do not give their window covering selection
too much thought. “My recommendation to most homeowners is to plan ahead on all phases of selection. Ask for professional advice,” recommends Swass. Most design professionals offer a paid by hour consultation. Swass Interior Design offers a two-hour consultation that creates a design plan that can be used for years, without an obligation to purchase product. If you do not have time to do your homework prior to selection, Swass suggests installing temporary paper shades in your windows until you have the time to make good buying decisions. “I know this is not an attractive thought but I continuously walk into homes that have made poor window covering decisions. Sometimes the poor decision can be saved by adding to the existing window covering treatment and other
times it is just too late.” One example of a poor decision, according to Swass, is the ever-popular shutter. While shutters look great from the outside, from a designer’s point of view installed shutters are very flat and cold looking on the interior in most circumstances. Get to know the difference and where to place them. Once shutters are installed it becomes very difficult to add any soft treatment to create ambiance in the room if you open your shutters on a regular basis. There is also a real emphasis on garden living these days. Most people find it relaxing and necessary to totally expose the windows so that the natural environment comes into the home and becomes part of the interior. Frank Lloyd Wright discovered this years ago. We no longer have to drive excess miles to enjoy what some of us share in our front or back yards. Perhaps the most important factor to remember is the size and placement of your
windows. This is especially true in the back of the home where most of the actual entertaining takes place. Many homes have several sized windows in the same room. “I try to make the windows look the same size. If there is a sliding glass door and a short window side by side, I will make both window coverings extend to the floor. Again, this is an interior design solution to a poorly designed area. Your window coverings usually create a background for your entire room setting,” says Swass. When looking for ideas, often people will look at magazines or the Internet. “Remember,” cautions Swass, “they are selling window coverings, not necessarily good design. It is not their job to determine what is best for you as an overall look and how it connects to your home.” It is not good design to install a vertical product and a horizontal product side by side, yet one sees it all the time by window covering manufacturers because it is a practical and an easy
concept to sell. In most new home plans, a combination of hard and soft window coverings suits most situations very well. Swass personally promotes a window covering product that very few people know about: woven wooden draperies, which stacks back to small spaces, is available in several wood styles and stains to choose from, looks finished by itself and best of all, are very affordable. There is a lot of thought process that goes into choosing the right window coverings for your home (probably more than you imagined!). Most people do not replace window coverings on a regular basis, so it’s essential to make a sound buying decision. In the end, the result just depends on how much energy you choose to spend on your home furnishing decisions and how connected you are to your space. Remember, balanced interiors do not cost more-- they just feel better.

THE BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGY by J. Nalani Kahae When it comes to flooring choices, the patent pending COREtec速 technology is making waves. Made from recycled wood, bamboo dust, limestone and virgin PVC, it is 100% waterproof and brings with it a natural resistance to mold and mildew as well as dimensional stability. The advanced technology surrounding its waterproof traits is precisely what distinguishes it from other LVPs (Luxury Vinyl Planks).

Roseville Carpet One’s Edward Watson explains, this waterproof core does not “expand over normal conditions and is backed by a ‘lifetime guarantee.” Other notable characteristics separating COREtec® from other LVPs are its ability to maximize room location choices; it does not need expansion strips or molding for extended installations; and, unlike other floating floors, it gives a smooth look without telegraphing. As for maintenance, all it requires is simple damp mopping. Edward says, “because of the multi-layer UV Acrylic finish, there is no need to ever apply a dressing. The factory finish does it all!”Laminate flooring is becoming a trend of the past as many are converting instead to LVPs. Perfect for a slew of different rooms (and certainly not limited to the kitchen or washroom), Luxury Vinyl Planks are becoming a choice favorite for its “authenticity and realism.” Of course, laminate flooring is absolutely durable as far surface area is concerned but has a wood based composite as its core; wood flooring is also beautiful though prone to normal wearing and moisture. Because both absorb moisture when wet, the flooring will naturally experience joint swelling. However, it is COREtec®’s waterproof technology that makes it the predominant selection as it addresses the moisture, wearing, and fading issues. There are quite a variety of choices from COREtec®’s product line. Currently, it includes their COREtec® Plus, COREtec® Tiles, COREtec® One and COREtec® XL lines; each of these include multiple options as far as colors, designs and the like. Ultimately, when it comes to choosing this selection, it is advisable to simply consider your style preferences. At the end of the day, COREtec® provides practicality with its durability and waterproofing system. It is a low maintenance choice and its stylish beauty endures. Backed by a lifetime guarantee, it’s a choice that will not disappoint. In a way, it is a renovation gift that will keep on giving. Come visit Roseville Carpet One and RCO Home Improvement locations for help choosing the prime product from COREtec®. 32

@style While many might see rugs as decorative pieces exclusive to interior design, bringing them outdoors has been a growing trend that seamlessly pulls together the aesthetic appeal. Suddenly, the vision you had for your patios, verandas, porches or other such entertaining areas comes to life. They are a wonderful way to combine styles created for indoors with the functionality of materials intended for the outdoor. Here we’ve pulled together five considerations for combining both your personal style and the functionality outdoor rugs can bring to your space:
by J. Nalani Kahae
LOCATION:
The space you are planning for your outdoor rug is going to work in conjunction with these other considerations below. Where are you planning to use your rug? In your patio? On the front deck? Of course, it could be a thoughtful selection for an entryway simply because of the expected foot traffic from the outside to the inside (and vice versa). Using them in the kitchen might also color a both unique and ideal situation simply because the room can be accident prone by nature.
PLACEMENT:
Whether you are looking for a piece to create a statement piece or, rather, a slightly more demure complement to another item, placing your color and pattern choices -- as well as your sizing -- will be essential. However, placements to bear in mind are settings in which there might be safety items to consider. That is, will it be near an outdoor fire pit or water structure? 34
CALIFORNIA RENOVATION MAGAZINE | APRIL 2016
QUALITY OF MATERIALS:
Humidity, rain and sun are three of the most common combatants against your outdoor rugs. Therefore, the material you select has a direct correlation to its functionality for you and your space. Make smart choices in high quality materials that have the highest level of water repellency (mold and mildew resistant!), stain and abrasion resistance. Natural materials (such as bamboo or cork), while great as far as texture is concerned, will be more prone to ruin if exposed to frequent moisture. Synthetic fibers (such as polypropylene or acrylic) are more durable and thus more ideal for harsher climates. In this case, be sure the rug is made entirely out of polypropylene (including the backing and trim). As for mild areas? Materials should not be quite as much an issue. Blues will evoke a serene effect, greens complement the nature surrounding you; yellows are bright and cheery.
SIZE AND SHAPE:
Generally, measuring your rug to approximately 3 smaller (on all sides) than your floor space is a good option when looking for a bordered effect (Perfect for a gazebo!). Also a fantastic way to clearly define each area of your entertaining space, decide the layout of your given furnishings and consider how you would like your rug to be placed within it. Some prefer all furniture to rest atop the rug and others are more partial to only the front legs of the furniture touching the rug. Regardless your pleasure, bear in mind a comfortable walking space around the rug you select. As far as shape is regarded, unique circles and ovals or traditional squares and rectangles, these choices are left to your personal preference.
CALIFORNIA RENOVATION MAGAZINE | APRIL 2016
35
PATTERNS AND COLORS:
One consideration to keep in mind is whether you would like your outdoor entertaining area to mirror and/or complement your interior decorating choices. If you have a more traditional palette to your home, selecting more neutral tones with soft floral print might be the way to go. On the other hand, more modernly styled homes would pair beautifully with outdoor rugs in more geometric patterns. And, of course, for those who wish to go off the grain, if you will, and lean more towards creating an ambiance, colors are emotive with each selected choice.

by NIcole Ellis Outdoor living is an essential part of life in Latin America. From Mexico to the Caribbean to Argentina, our neighbors to the South enjoy opening up their homes to the outside. Cuba is no exception; in fact, most aspects of life in Cuba are oriented towards the community outside. Cubans gather together in common outdoor places to socialize through sharing a meal or a pastime. For how much time is spent in these common outside areas, they are rather average with the prevailing difficulty of procuring everyday items in Cuba. The highlight of Cuban homes is most certainly the bright colors that adorn them. Although brightly colored, many of these colonial-era houses are in a state of decay, although some have been restored, which CALIFORNIA RENOVATION MAGAZINE | APRIL 2016 CALIFORNIA RENOVATION MAGAZINE | APRIL 2016

creates an interesting juxtaposition to the verdant tropical plant life that fills many home gardens. The majority of homes, schools, theaters, museums, and restaurants in Cuba open up to the outdoors through open-air covered walkways, grand porches, or common courtyards. These outdoor areas help to facilitate social life. Social encounters for Cubans occur outside of the house or in common outdoor areas within the home. Many homes have porches where meals are eaten together as a family with the windows wide open so the sounds of the city streets and the tropical Caribbean breezes filter through. Many young Cubans enjoy hanging out along the Malecón, or esplanade, that stretches five miles along the coast of Havana. This outof-doors space becomes a lively hang-out at night filled with music and laughter. It is not uncommon to walk by someone in the same spot everyday, who is just sitting outside to watch and make small talk with the passersby. Older Cubans also step outdoors to enjoy a game of checkers in a nearby park, often accompanied by a famous Cuban cigar. Social life in Cuba has actively been oriented toward these outdoor activities helping to build a strong community. For visitors and locals alike, Cuba’s great outdoors has a lot more to offer than these everyday social activities. Historically, fishing has been a favorite for many visitors to the island, including, most notably, Ernest Hemingway, as he detailed 38

in his famous book The Old Man and The Sea. The beaches of Cuba, specifically in the town of Varadero, could certainly be counted as among the most beautiful in the world, with their warm Caribbean waters and white sand beaches. Cuba is also a hotbed of biodiversity with a burgeoning ecotourism industry. Outdoor farmers’ markets at organoponicos, or organic farms, have found success in Cuba, providing a unique agricultural system which demonstrates a method for sustainable agriculture at the local level. There’s a lot to see everywhere you look in Cuba. Whether walking around Havana Vieja (Old Havana) or along the city streets to get a glimpse of the old American cars that fill the roads, all of Cuba’s greatest attractions are waiting outdoors. As the embargo has officially ended, Cuba will continue to open up to Americans who wish to visit it and take advantage of its charm and unique way of life. The outof-doors oriented lifestyle has already been attracting Canadians and Europeans to enjoy Cuba as a vacation-destination for many years. The tourism industry in Cuba is only continuing to rise as modern conveniences become more widely available on the island, such as public wi-fi, which has only become common around the island within the past year! Don’t miss out on experiencing Cuba’s rich culture and outdoor way of life.
