PUBLISHER'S Letter

his time of year is always a great reminder to acknowledge the many blessings we have been so fortunate to have in our lives. As we creep closer and closer into the holiday season, schedules get crazy, parties start popping up every weekend, the days get shorter and unfortunately, our stress goes through the roof. This year was full of unexpected surprises and I could not be more thankful for them. As we forge ahead, I hope we all take a few moments to realize what the true spirit of the season is all about and acknowledge these blessings and the people who have made a difference in our lives.   In this issue, we have an amazing lineup including our delicious cover story, The Gin Buzz. Our resident writer had the tough job of exploring our areas local distilleries, giving us a guide to these standout Gins from near and far. One thing’s for sure, you can guarantee a fabulous cocktail when stepping into these awesome establishments – or, try one at home with your girlfriends with one of our tasty cocktail recipes. Yum! Need a little stress relief? Visit our Lavish on Locals opener piece, Salts in Granite Bay for a truly unique and spa-like experience. The many health benefits of salt is incredible, so stop in and take a look for yourself and experience a little Salt for the Soul.   Our Fashion spread this issue features another local model who happens to also be a bartender at Milestone Restaurant in El Dorado Hills. The looks were put together by our good friends over at Button Up Boutique as they prep us for the colder weather. Making our way across town, we spotlighted the incredible new Sienna Restaurant in Roseville. Such a great addition to the community with a gorgeous ambiance, perfect for date night!  As always, thank you for your loyal readership and see you all in December as we wrap up 2016!

LAVISH on LOCALS LOL

Salt for the soul  BY LAUREN CLIFFORD | # PHOTOS DAN HOOD

For those of you unfamiliar with SALTS, I'm sorry to say that you have been missing out on a local gem. SALTS is a holistic spa that offers three different services that can help guests with various health issues, ailments, or the need to relax. Whether you want to find new ways to improve your health, or if you want a wonderful one-of-a-kind experience, SALTS is the place for you. Opened by owner Erica Colby in November 2015, SALTS is the most unique spa in Granite Bay, and possibly all of Northern California.  LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2016

15

LOL lavish on locals Up to 1,200 pounds of Epsom salt is dissolved in the water, which enables guests to easily float their bodies in a state of ultimate bliss and relaxation.   This therapy has also been known to aid with anxiety, bodily pain and even PTSD. The third service is infrared sauna therapy, which is a medical grade sauna that penetrates deeper into the skin as opposed traditional saunas. This therapy opens up skin's pores and allows old cells to be shed, which leaves you with glowing skin and improved tone and elasticity. When asked what therapy she recommends, Erica replied, "all the therapies really compliment each other since they are all helping to clean and detoxify the body in some way. While the therapies are great by themselves, the combination of the three are truly amazing." What's truly wonderful about this holistic spa is their passion for other people's well being. Erica and her employees are constantly sharing their knowledge regarding the exciting benefits of these therapies with their clientele.   So, as you can tell, SALTS in not an ordinary spa. SALTS is a place where offered therapies give people a chance to be calm, healthy, pain free and hopeful. If   Erica became interested in a holistic approach to health about five years ago, when she gave birth to twins and came near to death. After numerous platelet and blood transfusions, Erica survived, but the experience inspired her to research alternate methods of medicine. The second reason that prompted Erica was around the same time frame, when her husband's father was diagnosed with lung cancer at sixtytwo. Both his father and grandfather were diagnosed with the same type of cancer and passed at the early age of sixty-five.   This devastating loss frightened Erica and motivated her to dive even further into the world of medical research. Atlas, she found something called Halotherapy. Now big among numerous European countries, it remains one of the top respiratory therapies today, especially for the lungs. After these heavy life experiences, Erica decided to share her holistic knowledge with the world. Just like that, SALTS was born. SALTS offers three distinct therapies that promote overall better well-being.    The first service is of course, Halotherapy. You can expect to be in a calming room where pharmaceutical grade salt is infused in the air. Halotherapy not only benefits the respiratory system, it also helps with skin conditions, allergies, the common cold, cystic fibrosis and psoriasis. The second service is called float therapy, and it's exactly what is sounds like. Guests float in a shallow pool of body temperature water, but there's one twist to this method of therapy. 16

you want to try a different approach to healing, or if you just want to treat yourself to something new, SALTS is the haven for you. Also, keep in mind that winter is steadily approaching, and with the chill of winter comes the common cold. Erica suggests Halotherapy and use of the infrared spa back to back as a great cold fighter. CONNECT WITH SALTS:

Changing

 BY LAUREN CLIFFORD

Hoshall’s is a well-known and respected name in the Sacramento area when it comes to the hair and beauty business. What most people don’t know however, is that Hoshall’s Salon and Spa is not only a thriving business, but one huge family. Bill Hoshall’s legacy started in 1974 when he opened his first salon, and steadily started to conquer the Sacramento area with multiple locations for over forty years. Hoshall’s Salon and Spa in Folsom opened in 2000 and remains to this day one of the top hair salons throughout the Sacramento area.    This location in particular has been a success since it’s opening, but after decades in the business, Bill Hoshall has passed the torch to his two trusted right hand gals. Kathy Fennessy and Mary Brigham naturally transitioned into ownership roles at Hoshall’s Salon and Spa in Folsom after thirty-plus years of behind the scenes work. In fact, these two

22

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2016

incredible women have been running the daily operations and management of the salon for the last sixteen years. Their involvement in the Hoshall’s legacy runs much deeper than this however.   Kathy Fennessy was a client at Hoshall’s since elementary school, and she was even a hair model for them when Hoshall’s put on a benefit show for the Make a Wish Foundation. Kathy started working for Hoshall’s as a receptionist in 1985 at one of the old locations in Carmichael. Other than a couple of hiatuses, one as a manager at Jose Eber salon on Rodeo Drive, Kathy has been working for Bill ever since. In 2000, Kathy played a huge part in opening the current location in Folsom with over sixty wonderful employees. After years of hard-earned respect and a great amount of passion, Kathy never left. She has evolved from a terrific manager, to a proud and dedicated business owner.   Mary Brigham on the other hand grew up with the Hoshall family, and they attended Catholic school together. When she graduated high school in 1981 she heard that the Hoshall’s Carmichael location was hiring and immediately took interest. She interviewed as a part-time receptionist and started working the next day. She was simply swept off of her feet and fell in love with the business,

the work it entailed, but mostly the people. Through the years she worked her way up to full time management, in which she enjoyed day to day interaction with the staff as well as the clients. Her purpose became not only to be a wonderful manager, but simply to take care of people and make them feel loved. Mary refers to the salon, staff, and clients as “her heart and soul.” Thirty-six years later, Mary feels as positive and joyful as ever.    Together, Kathy and Mary are now the proud owners of both the Folsom Hoshall’s Salon and the Shades Hair Color Bar in Roseville. They continue to uphold a positive family-like atmosphere where staff and clients are happy and cherished. As Kathy states, “Mary and I are like Ying and Yang, we respect one another and are the best of friends.” Between Kathy and Mary, they have over sixty-five years of experience, and Hoshall did a wonderful job grooming his new owners to be the best they can be. So, as you see, the past thirty years has come to this wonderful moment. Some things may have changed behind the scenes but the legacy, love, and passion remain the same. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

MAINTAINING YOUR NEW HOME

A smart maintenance schedule will help keep a new home healthy and good looking for years to come. If low maintenance is a priority, then having a new home built is a great choice. In a 2014 study by the National Association of Homebuilders, 73 percent of new homeowners reported average monthly maintenance expenses just one-fourth (25 percent) of those reported by owners of older homes. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2016

25

LOL lavish on locals But while it’s relatively affordable to keep a new home in good working condition, proper maintenance is critical.    A new custom home will have a tightly sealed building shell. This reduces heating and cooling bills and helps the furnace and air conditioner maintain more even temperatures all year. With fewer unwanted drafts, it’s also easier for the mechanical systems to maintain ideal relative humidity (RH) levels in the home—30 to 45 percent in winter and 45 to 50 percent in summer.   Of course, the mechanicals will do a much better job of delivering these benefits if they’re well-tuned. A good ventilation system will keep the home’s air healthy, but its filters need to be kept clean, as do those in the heating and air conditioning units. It’s also a good idea to periodically clean the ductwork. (The

26

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2016

National Duct Cleaners Association recommends a cleaning every five years, but frequency depends on factors that include homeowners’ sensitivities, the number of pets, and the surrounding environment.)   But even people who obsessively change their car’s oil on schedule may neglect these tasks. For instance, it’s not uncommon for a furnace to develop problems if the air filter hasn’t been changed for a long time. The service company shows up only to find that the motor overheated because the filter is clogged and the system can’t breathe. Fortunately, such problems are entirely avoidable: keeping your new mechanicals in good condition is a simple matter of working with your builder to develop a cost-effective maintenance schedule, and then setting reminders in your schedule to get the needed tasks done.   An added benefit from properly functioning mechanicals is that they will keep the home looking good for many years. That strip flooring is beautiful when first installed, but it could eventually swell if the indoor air is damp, while other wood products shrink if the air stays too dry for too long. (According to a leading website for finish carpenters, relative humidity in older homes can range from 25 to 65 percent in some parts of the country, a swing that can make a 12-inch maple board expand and contract by up to 1/4 inch.)    In short, regular maintenance of your home’s mechanical systems will help ensure a healthier, more comfortable space and a lower long-term cost of upkeep. Many product warranties also require regular maintenance. This is true for any home, old or new, but it’s especially important for today’s high-performance custom homes.   The specifics of the maintenance program will vary with the type of mechanical equipment as well as with the climate where the home is located. Holiday beauty tips

& Trends  BY DONNA HUSTON

Ready, set, go… the 2016 holiday season is upon us! Everywhere we shop we see holiday decor even before the kiddies get to go Trick or Treat! I refuse to read one Thanksgiving recipe, or play one Christmas carol prematurely. That said, I do love the holiday season and the chance to dress up for a holiday party or two!

There are so many beautiful looks trending right now, I’m giddy with excitement! I am a self-proclaimed beauty junkie. Confession, they say, is the first step to recovery – if it was wanted! Ah, but who can resist the thrill of a new lipstick? The rush from the pop of a new color is better than a B12 shot! I like Smith & Cult’s new MATTE lip stain in “FLAT MAD HEAT.” It’s red, it’s silky, it doesn’t budge, and it’s matte! This product is so cool, and a must for the season. Everyone looks great with beautiful red lips! 32

Whatever you do, do not leave the house without your hair on point! Reserve now for holiday cut-and-color services, and especially for holiday party up-styles and blowouts. Leave it to the pros to create this seasons prettiest color trends to enhance your style.bProfessional stylist’s LOVE playing with all of the latest color options. Currently, deep Sangria, and Merlot hair-color is trending for those adventurous but not too daring. Intense and bright hair color in all shades are a must if you wish to be the center of attention. For the soft at heart, and with a hidden bit of mischief; try a lavender highlight mixed-in with platinum blonde or silver-gray hair color. If you have no time for color, by all means please use an instant cover-spray for roots. My go-to touch up spray is “Salon In A Bottle.” Within minutes overdue hair color looks refreshed with this temporary spray. Its waterproof and sweat-proof, but washes away cleanly. It is available in all natural hair colors and normally available at exclusive salons.

Glitter for the eyes - this is not what you think. The trend is SOFT and MINIMAL. The sparkle is kept to the corners of the eye, right beside and under the lower lash-line. There are lots of sparkly cosmetics to choose from. But if you simply use your cheek highlighter you can achieve the same effect by applying a bit of highlighter to your fingertip and smudging it around the corners of the eye. This look is instantly refreshing and brightens puffy eyes. For more drama pair this with a smoky-eye look. Chanel is launching their Le Rouge collection. This is a fabulous look! A smoky wine/brown eye color paired with red lips. These colors are perfect for fall and pair well with messy braids and cozy boots for a festive Thanksgiving gathering.

Brooches are great as hair accessories. However, the searches for cute, but not too “blingy” hair accessories are not easy. Look within your jewelry collection, and perhaps at vintage shops for lapel brooches. These pieces are so simple to wear and look great. Create a messy bun or braid on long hair with Oribe’s new Gold Lust Dry Shampoo to refresh your hair. Flip hair over and apply throughout, then brush through and complete a braid or bun. Literally pin the brooch into place on a section of hair, and within minutes you look as if you’ve just stepped out of the salon.

My wish for you is to stay well, and rested through this holiday season. Be good to each other out there and give a smile to someone who doesn’t have one. A smile is the least expensive and prettiest look of all.

YOUR LOCAL TASTING GUIDE

Since it was first introduced to the English speaking world on the battlefields of Belgium in the form of genever or ‘Dutch Courage’ during the 16th Century, gin has grown to become the favored drink of authors and political figures from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Winston Churchill, who once quipped: “The gin and tonic has saved more Englishmen’s lives, and minds, than all the doctors in the Empire.” 40

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2016

For a long time gin took hold as a cheap drink in England, being an easy way for distillers to market their liquor, as most gin doesn’t require aging. The popularity of this spirit surged in Britain with the juniper forward, London Dry Gin style taking hold in the late 19th Century, and rising from the favored drink of the pauper class to the favored drink of the aristocracy; while serving as an effective

mask for quinine, a compound used to fight malaria among the soldiery of the far-flung British Empire, gin took hold in the 1800’s as the common man’s drink. In it’s old age gin became seen as the additive for the martini, the dry drink of the elderly gentleman, and a classic pre-Prohibition era drink in America, where it dropped off in popularity shortly after repeal; but it’s since made an unquestionable come back. In many ways a cornerstone of the creative mind, and the lifeblood of cultural artistry, gin is a storied spirit; and it’s capturing the palette of a new generation in the Sacramento and Gold Country Regions.   There are a variety of reasons gin is catching on locally, not the least of which is the abundance of local distilleries and bars and talented service staff, with ever-growing drink portfolios and gin-centric libations on offer. As the Farm-to-Fork movement grows in Sacramento, and the food and drink scene thrives, the Farm-to-Glass movement is keeping pace.    Gin distilleries abound in the region close to home in the form of Gold River Distillery, which produces Wheel House American Dry Gin, Amador Distillery which offers California Gold Gin, and California Distilled Spirits in Auburn which produces Darjeeling Gin.   A bit further afield, hailing from Treasure Island in San Francisco comes Bummer & Lazarus, a gin available among other locales at the bar in Paragary’s, as well as at Hock Farm Craft and Provisions, both in Sacramento. St. George gin comes in from Alameda, California and has a distinctive floral flavor that has won over a lot of gin aficionados according to Christina Carly, a bartender at Aji Japanese Bistro in El Dorado Hills.    “The St. George Botanivore is kind of cool (and) not a lot of people know about it,” Carly explained. “They see Hendrick’s on the shelf and they automatically want that; I try to turn people onto the Botanivore because it has just as many botanicals.”   Though emphasizing there is nothing wrong with Hendrick’s, St. George was the gin of choice for several area bartenders, like Carly and Baron Stelling, an award

winning bartender who works, among other locales, at Paragary’s, the Shady Lady Saloon, and previously at Hock Farm in Midtown, Sacramento. “St. George is Amazing and they’re the ones who helped kick off the whole craft distilling thing in the mid 1980’s,” Stelling said.   With 19 different botanicals forming a symphonic blend of flavor for St. George’s Botanivore gin, including bay laurel, bergamot, juniper berries, Seville orange peel, black peppercorn and more, it’s easy to see why this gin, and other complex spirits like it have caught on to become increasingly popular. Carly said that the younger generation of gin revivalists are getting into botanical gin flavor profiles in a big way. Traditionally a juniper and pine note forward drink, contemporary gin distillers are experimenting with these flavors, and patrons are gravitating towards those more botanical and floral notes. “People have gotten a lot more open to trying it; a lot of cool drinks have been made out of it,” Carly affirmed.   Stelling’s favorite gin brand is Bummer & Lazarus from Raft Distillery on Treasure Island, near San Francisco.

- Aged for 15 months in wine-seasoned French Limousine casks, this gin earned the Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2012.

This gin, which takes it’s name from two famous stray dogs in San Francisco, can be found at Paragary’s, and at certain times of the year, other local watering holes around Sacramento. The availability of varied gin brands like Bummer & Lazarus, Wheel House American Dry Gin, California Gold, Venus Spirits, Junipero from Anchor Distilling, and 209 which finishes its gin in wine barrels, along with so many local places where these and other gins can be found from Cibo 7 in Roseville, to Ahi in El Dorado Hills, Midtown Sacramento and beyond, is fueling the interest and consumption of what was, according to Carly, once considered a less complex drink choice; favored for its juniper flavor, and usually targeted by an older crowd.

Anchor Old Tom Gin These gins feature an array of flavors from sweet botanicals to dry junipers. From the historically potdistilled Old Tom Gin, to the Botanist Islay Dry 22 hailing from Scotland, to the Few Breakfast Gin designed as the perfect brunch drink, to the St. George Dry Rye Gin, these craft gins have taken hold with rising popularity in recent years.

St. George Terroir Every gin tells a story and has a spirit. St. George Terroir embraces botanicals, Corsair finds its soulful flavor in spiced rum barrels, Monkey 47 takes its name from General Montgomery’s devotion to the repair of the Berlin Zoo, and Barr Hill and Rusty Blade gins hail from old world craft distillery techniques in small batches; bringing flavor to taste in an extraordinary way.

Increasing variety has been key to the gin revival. In fact, Carly said that Aji offers around 11 – 15 different varieties of gin depending on the day. “I got into gin because I was intrigued,” Carly said. “I kept drinking it and I got more into it because of just how different the spirit could be. I think the brand to brand, batch to batch variations in botanicals offers a complex depth to the drinks.” Every bartender has a favorite drink, and between Stelling and Carly, Carly says her favorite drink, made at Aji is “The Last Word” which combines the alchemy of gin with the majesty of green chartreuse.   Gin ends at the cocktail level, which finds delivery at Aji Japanese Bistro in El Dorado Hills, Empress, Paragary’s, Hock Farm Craft & Provisions, and The Shady Lady Saloon in Sacramento, and Cibo 7 in Roseville, which has one of the widest gin offerings in the Gold Country area with about 20 varieties in stock. Ray Silva, Chef at Cibo 7 said the restaurant and bar tries to maintain a healthy variety of rotating craft gins. Bar Hill, Monkey 47, 209, Leopold’s Gin, and the array of St. George gins make up the gamut of the best place in Roseville to find these more botanical drinks, along with the standards like Hendrick’s and Aviation.   “It is more on the higher end,” Silva said. “People know what they like, but when you have something else that’s a cool product you can show them something they may have never seen at another place.” But before it gets to the proving ground of the bar room, gin begins with the distiller, and is birthed in the arcane vaults of the drink alchemist’s craft. Greg Baughman, Distiller at Gold River Distillery, understands this and devotes his craft to spirits. When it comes to gin, Gold River Distillery’s Wheel House Gin is an American Dry Gin which Baughman says falls under the category of a Western or Contemporary style gin.   “In the world of gins there are a couple of different categories, but the main ones are Western Contemporary and London Dry,” Baughman explained. “Western

BARON STELLING Bartending at The Shady Lady Saloon and Paragary's, Baron Stelling has been the recipient of numerous awards including the National Restaurant Association's 2016 Star of the Bar. Stylish and delicious, Paragary's is located at 1401 28th St. in Sacramento, and The Shady Lady Saloon lends a classic note to their old-fashioned pre-prohibition era style cocktails at 1409 R St. in Sacramento. Contemporary is very juniper muted, there’s a lot more emphasis on the other botanicals in the mix there. There are people out there who are classic dry or London Dry lovers and there are people who love more of that Western Contemporary style gin. Of that, you’d be able to put us, Monkey 47, Aviation Gin, and Hendrick’s in that same category in terms of being different, not your classic London Dry.”    Baughman says whether you prefer those juniper forward notes or find yourself more botanically inclined, there’s no wrong way to come at gin. It all comes down to personal taste, and one might look for a more classic dry one day, and a more wild and contemporary botanical heavy gin the next. “Across the board they offer very different flavor profiles, but at the same time they still offer a gin to the masses,” Baughman explained. “What makes ours nice is that it’s very smooth. It’s drinkable by itself on the rocks, it makes a perfect martini, and a lot of gins don’t. A lot of gins belong in mixers, (and) have to be mixed to be palatable by most people.”   Wheel House Gin can be found in Folsom featured at Back Wine Bar & Bistro, Sudwerk Riverside Restaurant, Scarlet’s Saloon, and Power House Pub. It also is available in Sacramento at Grange Restaurant & Bar, Hock Farm Craft and Provisions, Monkey Bar, and Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Company, and can be found further afield in San Francisco and up and down the Central Coast. “Gin was very, very popular preprohibition,” Stelling said. “Also England’s been pretty huge on gin. In probably the past 15 years in America gin’s been experiencing an enormous renaissance; and people are drinking so much more gin than they used to. The number of gins on the market are expanding exponentially. Craft distillers tend to put out a gin first thing because you don’t have to age it usually.”   With so many options to choose from both regarding drink and location, it’s never been a better time to take glass in hand and join the Gold Country and Sacramento Gin renaissance, decidedly underway with no signs of slowing down.

TRAVEL Pacific Grove  BY DON AND ANN JACKSON

A Romantic Monterey Peninsula Getaway When we start to think of an escape, with romance as a theme, one of the first destinations we consider is the Monterey area. World famous Carmel or Pebble Beach on this spectacular peninsula may come to mind initially, but one of our personal favorites is the quaint seaside community of Pacific Grove. Even though a few years ago Life Magazine’s Sunday supplement named it “the most romantic town in the West” we still believe it’s not as well known as it should be. The fact that a couple of its’ main points of interest are their popular Lover’s Point, Lover’s Point Park and Lover’s Point Beach immediately conjures up the town’s cupid factor. It’s also well known as Butterfly Town USA as each autumn the migrating stunningly beautiful Monarchs arrive at the city’s protected Grove Sanctuary for winter sheltering. A mutual love affair has developed with the local town-folks who take the ongoing protection of the gorgeous nectar sipping Lepidoptera very seriously.

WHERE

to STAY:

With around 30 lodging choices of small hotels, inns and B & B’s, readers should easily find one that will meet most lodging expectations and budget for any romantic special occasion. Just keep in mind there are no huge hotels, mega resorts or ultra spas like you’ll find in Pebble Beach, Carmel or Monterey but not to worry. On our most recent visit we stayed at the charming Gosby House Inn, one of the area’s longest operating properties boasting over 100 years of lodging hospitality. This Victorian mansion, with it’s tasteful yellow and white exterior decor and delightful gardens, is just a few blocks walk to the scenic Monterey Bay 50

frontage pathway and downtown Pacific Grove. Individually stylized guest room accommodations, upscale amenities, complimentary breakfast buffets, daily homemade cookies, late afternoon wine and hors d’ oeuvres gatherings plus friendly staff members are all hallmarks. Some rooms feature fireplaces and spa tubs in this stylish boutique inn. Morning newspapers, free local telephone calls and wireless internet are added plusses. Once you know it’s owned and operated by the highly regarded Four Sisters Inns, celebrating over 40 years of stylish inn-keeping, you’ll not be surprised by the favorable experience. www.gosbyhouseinn. com If you prefer to stay at an inn overlooking scenic Monterey Bay with national accolades and can afford moderately higher rates check out the Green Gables Inn, also owned by the Four Sisters group. Named one of the Top 50 Small Hotels in the country by Conde Nast Traveler, the inn has similar amenities and features as the Gosby House. This scrupulously restored 11 room Queen Anne Victorian was built in 1888 and features those incredible views. www.greengablesinnpg.com. And by the way this esteemed lodging group now operates seventeen unique boutique style inns at premier locations throughout California. TRAVEL Pacific Grove WHERE to DINE:

Absolutely the most romantic setting in town is The Beach House restaurant overlooking Lover’s Point Beach, the Bay and the distant skyline of Monterey. Our dinner and service were superb and the nighttime lights across the water gave us a sentimental night we’ll long remember. www. beachhousepg.com. Another of our local dining faves is Passionfish, featuring sustainable seafood and organically grown vegetables, award winning wines and professional service. Any restaurant with the word passion in its’ name conjures up a loving foodie adventure. www.passionfish. net. Fandango’s twenty-five year history of gourmet Mediterranean European inspired cuisine, proficient service and an award winning wine list adds up to another memorable dining option. www. fandangorestaurant. com. Reservations are recommended at all three restaurants, especially on the weekends.

WHAT to DO:

To further entice your interest in this charming city beyond the romance aspect, be sure to check out Point Pinos Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast since 1855, the Monarch Grove Sanctuary and golfers certainly need to play the city’s world class golf links, one of the country’s finest public courses. For many other attractions, things to see, water activities and events to attend be sure to go to the Chamber of Commerce’s website: www.pacificgrove. org. This site also lists many more lodging and dining choices and keep in mind that Pacific Grove is also a seaside destination that offers a tranquil atmosphere if relaxation and rejuvenation are of paramount importance. (PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Our travel team, Don the writer/editor and Ann the photographer/ researcher, head to PACIFICA to bring our readers a personal look at the closest Pacific Ocean small beach town to our Sacramento area) 52

Sip & Savor

Virginia Woolf once said, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well;” Sienna Restaurant in Roseville knows what this means. The Sacramento region has its share of fine dining, and the Sienna restaurant group recently recently upped the ante with their new location at 1480 Eureka Road. Open since late September this year, the restaurant has already seen a tremendous response and welcome from the community. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2016

A good restaurant creates an inviting atmosphere, balancing comfort, quality food and drink, and outstanding service; the new Roseville restaurant location has all of these aspects in full, something that Director of Operations at Sienna Roseville Mark Fucci appreciates. Fucci has worked with Mark and Karoline Platt, who have experience with P.F. Chang’s, The Chart House and other restaurant ventures, to bring a new fine dining experience to to the greater Sacramento region.    What sets Sienna apart from the rest, Fucci says, is their food and service.    “We do things a little differently with our people,” Fucci said. “Our culture’s a little bit different. We like to think that we have a head above everybody else with our team. (We have) a lot of good people and amazing cuisine.”    The restaurant’s Modern American fare includes a table fully stocked with wild mushroom bruschetta, macadamia nut crusted brie, risotto fritters, thai chicken spring rolls that pop on the palette, and these are just the appetizers. Specialities currently on offer include the Sienna Ale braised short-rib with parmesan whipped potatoes, Grilled Prime New York Steak, a variety of well seasoned and skillfully prepared fish dishes, ratatouille risotto and much more. Like modern America itself, Sienna offers a flavor landscape that is as diverse and bursting with 56

color as the autumn leaves. Wood stone flatbreads topped with meats, mushrooms, goat cheese, and scrumptiously seasoned veggies prepared by skillful chefs, accompanied with fresh salads make a singularly delightful dining experience. American standards like burgers and sandwiches are made to mouth-watering perfection and cater to all dietary and taste demands. Included with the sandwiches is a delightful Black Bean Veggie Burger that rounds out a menu with friendly options for vegetarians and the more carnivorously inclined alike.   With so much on offer the natural question for a first time visitor to the new Roseville location to ask would be with all these extraordinary culinary delights on offer where do I begin? But, Mark says, there is no

way to choose a favorite dish and recommends more than one visit.   “That’s like picking a favorite kid,” Fucci said. “We’re here all the time and we put all the menu items on, we work with the chefs.” Everything, he says, is delectable and desirable and can be accompanied by offerings from the well stocked restaurant bar.    That said, Fucci gives the fitness special high marks, a changing menu item under 450 calories every week. “It’s nice to know I always have something that’s really good, that’s something healthy too,” Fucci explained. And brunch from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays with $10 bottomless mimosas, he emphasizes is not to be missed. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

SIP & Savor WINE PICKS

THE

SELECTION

THIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL LODI WINERIES.

THE ARTof wine

Jeremy Wine Company in Lodi offers wide range of flavor profiles, an experience to be shared  BY MATT KRAMER

Among the picturesque vineyards of Lodi’s world-class California wine growing region stands Jeremy Wine Company, owned and operated by Jeremy Trettevik and his wife Choral. Trettevik, like the wines that grow in his vineyard, has roots here, and it’s evident in the commitment he brings to the craft. Trettevik adopts a big picture view of the art of wine; to him, a glass of wine is something that defies sequestration into a single definitive element. Trettevik adopts the view that wine is artwork, something to be appreciated equally in a large frame view from the perspective of a wide angle pallet lens, and with plenty of focal point details to be appreciated by the discerning connoisseur of minutiae.    “All your senses are engaged with it,” Trettevik said. “I describe wine in terms of visual. Most people come in with a sense of smelling the wine; I say picture it more like standing on a vista. You’d see the whole horizon, all the mountains and trees and everything, but if you wanted to you could focus in on a single tree or boulder. I think that’s one of the most beautiful things about it.”    Trettevik hopes his wine exhibits the highlights of what Lodi has to offer as an ever expanding wine region – from the sun soaked vineyards all the way to the old-world feel of the tasting room, which occupies an old bank building, turned cozy wine hideaway, from the early 20th century.    When it comes to Trettevik’s take on wine, the whole is indeed more than the sum of its parts. As he puts it, Trettevik almost seems to have been destined for his involvement in the wine industry.    “I’ve been in the wine business a long time,” Trettevik said. “It took me a few years to really fall in love with (it). In Lodi it was one of the main industries, you either go into agriculture or you really go into wine.” 58

And go into wine he did. Emphasizing the importance of experimentation with different varieties of wine, the range on offer at Jeremy Wine Company includes everything from the rich, fruity flavors of the Old Vine Zinfandel, through the Barbera, Sangioveses, Tempranillo and sweet dessert-style wines to the crisp and refreshing Spanish Albarino. No matter which variety of wine one prefers, Trettevik insisted that wine is best enjoyed in good company. “There’s no mistake about it; the elegant points in wine are those times when you’re sharing it,” Trettevik concluded. SIP & Savor DINING OUT WITH NICK

Drinkin’  BY NICK DEDIER

Drinking, like anything in life, can be an art. I mean, who on earth ever would have thought that preparing food for people and arranging it on plates with little circle cut outs of nasturtium leaves, dots of sauce and pearly foams of god-knows-what would have been considered high art by anyone at any time ever?   The most important thing to remember about drinking is that there is, again like everything, a time and a place. From the college kids doing shots of cheap vodka at a dive to the classy power couple doing fancy chilled shots of vodka (thankfully with olives) NICK DEDIER at the neighborhood steakhouse. At the end of the day it’s all considered drinking, yet your environment determines the perception of this human pastime. If the power couple walked into the dive bar, snaking around a few pool tables to get to the counter, and inquired about the levels of “butteriness” of their chardonnays while ordering some blue cheese olive drink you would literally hear the jukebox screech to a halt while everyone silently turns stares. In the same vein if the plaid clad hipsters from the dartboard walked into a Maestros and bellied up next to a senator and ordered a PBR and a shot of Jame-O, the chewing would stop and the ghasts from within the pearl bedazzled wives would come in unison.    While this is all true, (and socially funny / sad at the same time) one of the most exciting and enjoyable undertakings of going out is getting to playing the part. Here are a few tips for going out, blending in while standing out and having a good time.

• ARE YOU GOING TO A BEER BAR?

These places aren’t known for their Michelob Ultras so you had better get to love your IPA’s, your bitters and your sours. Also do yourself and the rest of the bar a favor and don’t “20 Questions Quiz” the bartender about the nuances of the wines collecting dust behind the bar. Their thing is beer, order a great beer and have an awesome experience. Also if they have beer “anything” on their menu it is, more often than not, the best thing on the menu.

• STEAKHOUSE OR SWANKHOUSE TIME?

Their specialty cocktails are probably full of martinis with pomegranate or basil and strawberry. Yet their staff is usually versed on what is universally a very safe and quality wine selection. Also their bartender has probably made about a billion martinis in their lifetime so if stirred and up is in your wheelhouse this is the way to go.

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2016

• NEIGHBORHOOD CHAIN BAR?

Order the classics. Mojito, Madras, Salty Dog, Cosmo, blended Margarita; hell even a “tall” Coors Lite will do the trick here. Also the wine list will be safe, easy and recognizable. Buttery chards, jammy merlots and tannin laden cabs will be your wing-man here for the night.

• CRAFT OR COCKTAIL BAR?

This is a relatively new trend (over the last decade) where they make everything in house. From bitters to syrups and tonics these are considered the new rockstars of the bar world. Here the specialty cocktails are usually amazing so go this way if you like. The wine lists are usually a little more esoteric with lesser known varietals and smaller producers. Tastes here tend to be a bit more adventurous and open so put yourself in their hands and have some fun with something new or stay safe and order an old fashion or a Manhattan.    Ultimately the most important thing about going out for a cocktail or two is to do exactly that; have a cocktail or two, having fun, expanding your boozy beverage horizons, trying something new and playing the part. Whether it’s a fancy dinner out, a killer Old Fashion for happy hour or a shot of Jameson while you’re playing pool cocktailing is an art and the hardest trick of them all is not to overdo it. Additionally do yourself a favor and download an app that will call a driver to take you home safely. One drink can impair the most savvy and experienced of us and can do serious damage to you and others in the community. So when you are out having a good time, the only golden rule is “stay safe”.

ETIQUETTE final thoughts

THANKSGIVING

stress  BY GABRIELA VANACORE

One of the most decorated times of year is both exciting and enjoyable. But it can also be exasperating; leaving both you and your family feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. This year calls for a change to leave your worries behind and avoid those stressful situations that you get uneasy about every year. The holidays involve a lot of gettogethers and celebration, which is why being the ideal guest can make this year better than the last!

PREPARE

Yep, that’s right and no matter what your host says, don’t show up empty-handed. Before the dinner, event or celebration, ask your host if there are something specific you should bring. Your host will most-likely respond with a “no,” which really means, bring something anyways. If you decide to make something, make sure it doesn’t need to be cooked in the oven upon arrival, as your host is probably still cooking themselves. Don’t have time to make something? Buying store-bought goods is A-OK as long as you present it on a pretty dish to make it more festive.

TIMING

Be prompt but not too early. Big dinners often begin in the wee hours of the morning for your host; and they are guaranteed to be worn down by the time 4 o’clock rolls around. You don’t want to be the “I haven’t seen you in years but just walked in while you’re still in your pajamas,” type. Taking someone by surprise has got to be up there with one of the most stressful situations for a host. The main event usually starts about 1 hour after the stated time. No, that doesn’t mean get there an hour late but feel free to walk in 5 or 10 minutes past the stated start time.

CONSIDERATE

Allow your elders to go before you when reaching for your favorite homemade biscuits. Or if you’re 66

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2016

grabbing a drink, ask others what you can get for them. Help get the little ones settled first, putting together plates for the kids and getting them to sit down for dinner. You have no idea how much the parents will praise you for this as they’re probably searching for a break. Be extra considerate of the non-family member guests, as this time of year is about community spirit, not just direct family. Leave those uncomfortable stories about last year’s family drama behind, especially with new people around.

BE HELPFUL

There’s nothing better than having some extra hands when hosting a party. Be the provider of those hands and start offering to top up drinks, clear plates and wash dishes. Your host will guide you while doing this. Stay at their pace and don’t be too overbearing as you want to be helpful and not in their way.
