nd just like that… it’s time to say good-bye to 2016. It’s hard to believe we are rounding out another year here at Lavish. With so much on the forefront in 2017, all of us here are excited to be moving onward and upward. With the majority of 2016 being dominated with politics, negative rhetoric and what feels like our country being torn apart into red or blue, I can’t help but to feel hopeful with new leadership at every level. Once all the dust settles, I’m hoping our country will renew a sense of democracy and patriotism – to support and encourage those in these positions, and to peacefully debate differentiating opinions. Tensions are so high among everyone at the moment, and with the holidays around the corner, let’s all put the negativity away and focus on the real importance of the season. We cannot become whole again without accepting our differences and deciding to love one another. This may be a childhood lesson, however I’m sure we all can personally recall some childish behavior the past few months! Let’s all come together, value our time and relationships and cherish this special time of year. There’s nothing worse than yearning for a late night drink and finding out that nothing in your neighborhood is open. “My wife and I live in Folsom, we’d opt for a glass of wine and maybe a bite to eat, but there was never anywhere to go,” stated King. The idea came to the King couple when the constant hunt for a place to enjoy a glass of wine was becoming stressful.

LOL lavish on locals My wife and I decided to do something about it.” Now owners of Prohibition Wine Lounge, Janoah and Chantalle King, devised an idea that would soon evolve. “We’ve done a few different entrepreneurial ventures,” which made building a business a reality, “then we called our good friends, Mike and Nicole Colenzo and told them about the idea. They had the restaurant management and development experience we needed. I said, I’ll build it and you can run it.” Then, the couple’s idea started to come to life. “Two months in, Chonnie woke me up at 4 a.m. with a name and idea, Prohibition, like the Great Gatsby.” From there they based the elegant décor and theme for the wine lounge off of the Speak Easy feel from New York and the Great Gatsby. “We wanted to recreate that feeling of walking into someone’s home, as they served only the finest food, beer and wine. People were looking for a reason to celebrate during Prohibition, they found comfort in getting dressed up and going out on the town,” said King. Prohibition wine lounge took nine months to assemble. The concept of the wine lounge was originally around a membership idea. People can select a membership plan and choose their own wine every single month. “Let’s build a cellar in the middle of the restaurant and allow members access to personally pick out their wine,” he said.
From Silver Oak to Caymus, Prohibition stocks wine from all over the world. “With a membership, you can’t physically get wine any cheaper.” During the building process, they discovered that the wine lounge had more potential than just a membership system. People can come in, taste any wine by the glass, order farm to fork food from the kitchen and enjoy a festive environment often with live music. A full menu wasn’t part of the original plan, however the two couples decided it was a necessity after getting renowned Chef, Scott McNamara on board. “With no microwaves, and no freezers, everything is picked up and prepped daily.” The scallops being in the top ten best of California as well as a personal favorite of the restaurants most recent guests. Prohibition Wine Lounge is bringing some liveliness to the Folsom area. Right in your own backyard you can do some late night wining and dining that won’t leave you stressing. After tasting over three thousand wines and working long nights, the King’s and Calenzo’s are ready to share this gem with the public. “This is not just a place to come and eat, but to get some great wines at amazing prices and enjoy yourself.” CONNECT WITH SALTS:

Although we can get caught up in shopping and scoring some great gifts, it’s important to remember how meaningful the gift of giving is this holiday season. Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a great way to give back to your local community. The Marine Corps created the non-profit organization, Toys for 20
Tots in effort to give back to locally disadvantaged communities as children often feel the wrath mostly during the holidays. You can support the U.S. Marine Corps by contributing to fundraisers that supplement campaigns and the costs that come with collecting the toys. The program accepts gifts mostly for children up to the

teen ages. All appropriate gifts are accepted as there is not a published recommended list of toys. However, community members are encouraged to drop off items as the foundation will sort through donated gifts before giving to the children. There is also information about how to become a volunteer, business location for drop-off toy receiver for you or someone else. Donations are also accepted online as the profits go toward buying new toys, books and supplies for children. However, as buyers and realtors slow into the season and prepare for a new year, many recognize the importance of giving back to the communities that they work all year serving and knowing best. While we may spend most of the year searching for that perfect yard, closet or comfort, this time of year can’t help but to make us realize how much we do have. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2016

LOL lavish on locals The holidays are a good way to help those unfortunate find their little piece of “home.” After many years of participation, the El Dorado County Association of Realtors (EDCAR) is sponsoring the Christmas CanTree Project. The Christmas CanTree Project aims to help those in need in our local community. The chosen charities for this year’s sponsorship are the El Dorado County Food Bank, Upper Room and New Morning. For those un-familiarized with these organizations, each has been created to bring assistance to the local community during a time of much need. The Food Bank of El Dorado County provides daily assistance and over 40 local emergency food response agency sites, including shelters for battered women, senior centers, local good pantries, under privileged youth, you shelters, soup kitchens and maternity homes. The Upper Room supplies hot meals every day of the week to those in need of food. As a completely
volunteer-run organization and eight years of service, the Upper Room will be holding its first fundraiser as the cost of buying and making food goes beyond $1,000 per week. And the third pick, New Morning, which has been providing a safety net of services to troubled and endangered youth for over 40 years. This includes a 24-hour children’s shelter, drug and alcohol help, counseling and support for parenting teens and troubled youth.
Through these three charities chosen and sponsored by EDCAR, families, youth and individuals from our local community will have something a little extra to lean on this holiday. Whether it is a hot meal or a place to sleep at night, that little piece of “home” is extremely valuable. As I write this article visions of sugar plum velvet party dresses are dancing in my head! I love this time of year; the fashion, the make-up, the hairstyles, oh my! With the rush of the holiday season fully upon us, I wish to share with you a few styling secrets that guarantee party-ready looks quicker than St. Nick gets around the world in one night! Just like all the articles we read that suggest PRE-Preparation is key to hosting any holiday party, so it goes with pre-planning your holiday looks. Here are a few tricks of the trade from the masters of quick-change-look switch up’s - Hairstylists. We are so busy this time of year creating your beautiful look, we have mastered getting our look done in no time! Here is the secret along with a few Do’s and Don’ts:
CREATE SEVERAL DIFFERENT LOOKS FROM ONE BASIC DESIGN!
DON’T plan on the endless cycle of shampoo, blow dry, style for every occasion! DO begin your look with an exceptional blowout that will last for several days. Nearly every salon in town offers this service. For those that have not yet mastered the art of a home blow dry style, this is time well-spent. In just about an hour your professional stylist will create a strong style that will last and allow you to change the basic blow out design into several other looks. Enjoy wearing this style down to any of your more dressy occasions. For extra bling, add in a glittery brooch, or hair pin. Sweep the style off to one side, letting the hair cascade over the shoulder for longer hair, or behind the ear for shorter hair. Instant glamour! 36

DON’T overload the style with hair product or hairspray. Keeping the products to a minimum when your blow out is new will assure your next style will look fresh. DO build on your style foundation. Create a second look quickly by opting for an easy Chignon (low bun) for long hair or a tousled, messy look for shorter locks.
DON’T wet your hair by any means! DO use a dry texture spray (NOT A DRY SHAMPOO) to control slept-in hair. Usually the hair is not yet soiled enough to cleanse it. Sometimes a dry shampoo can create less volume and we don’t want that! Try Oribe’s bestselling texture spray, Dry Texturizing Spray. This invisible dry hair spray buildsin incredible volume and sexy texture. For those that must use something to control an oily scalp, use a salt spray. I love the R+Co Rockaway Salt Spray. Simply apply either product at the scalp mostly and a very light application throughout the midshaft and ends. Create a Chignon on long hair by pulling all hair loosely into a low ponytail. Double-back the hair once again into the hair tie and gently fan it out. Let tendrils of hair fall gently around your face for an elegant look. For short hair use a little more product throughout the hair and use the palms of your hands to “mess up

Surfing, scuba diving and spearfishing aficionados will love the area. The top surfing beaches are Linda Mar (best for beginners), Rockaway and Sharp Park (better for the more experienced surfer). Scuba divers will enjoy exploring two underwater wrecks at Pedro Point in approximately 30 to 40 feet of water and spearfishing is especially popular in May and June when the delectable prized halibut enter Linda Mar Bay. Surf and scuba shops offering lessons and gear rentals are available in town. Into biking, hiking and walks? Casual bikers will love the paved coastal trail. Mountain bikers will be ecstatic over the labyrinth of winding trails overlooking the ocean, especially the ascent up the sides of Montara Mountain to 2000 feet above town.

The 1.3-mile Devil’s Slide Trail, on the site of the often closed old road (now replaced by safer tunnels) invites hikers, runners and bicyclists to experience this gorgeous cliffside pathway. We’ve done numerous hikes in the town and strongly recommend the quite easy Mori Point coastal walk. We loved the more strenuous trek on the trail up to Sweeney Ridge for stunning panoramic vistas. But keep in mind there are many more hiking trails and the locals, hotel employees or the Visitor Center will fill you in on others. And all those wonderful beaches mentioned earlier provide romantic surfside sandy beach strolls. Like crabbing and fishing? Don’t miss a walk out onto Pacifica Pier, the only place in the Bay Area where the public can 54
crab for free and anglers are welcome. If you love to watch whales but get seasick going out in a boat, you may, at certain times of the year, see migrating whales from the Pier. Hooked on golf? Sharp Park Golf Course is a reasonably priced links inspired course designed by famed golf course architect Alister Mackenzie who also designed Augusta National, home of the Masters Golf Tournament. Ever tried a Segway ride? A childhood interest in the culinary arts stemmed Chef, Steven Long’s remarkable career and passion for being in the kitchen. Coming from a foodie family, it was hard for Long to not absolutely love the business. With a family background including opening up the first trading post, the first supermarket in California and being apart of a renowned butchery, Long was immersed early on. Upon graduating from the California Culinary Academy, catering to some of the most prominent names in history and instructing classes at Le Cordon Bleu, Long decided to open up a restaurant. Though Long has worked in the industry for most of his life, this was the first dining endeavor that was his very own. Upon getting inspiration from sites of France, Long brought his obsession for fine food, wine and an elegant experience to Folsom. Long describes opening his own restaurant as “crazy, exciting, overwhelming, frustrating, tiring and energizing.” Le Charenton is a charming and quaint
establishment in the heart of our own Folsom, California. The name, which was influenced by a well-known asylum in France, gave meaning to this new business endeavor. “Of course you have to be crazy to be a restaurant owner,” says Long. “It takes a type of lunacy born into an obsession for bringing pleasure to people through food.” An already alluring restaurant, Long talks about how certain food dishes are done right at your table. When asked his favorite, he told me “well, the steak Diane is fun, it’s prepared right at your table. And if it’s not done to your liking, you only have yourself to blame.” That’s right, made-to-
order in front of your very eyes. Other items on the menu include a fresh, panroasted Alaskan halibut, a savory sautéed scallop salad, a delectable ahi seviche and a vanilla bean crème brulee to die for. You think the food sounds phenomenal, don’t get Chef Long started on wine. Having won the wine spectator award, Long describes how he tastes a lot of wine he gets “smitten with.” From my personal favorite, Stags Leap to Kistler to Rochioli, this place has tons to choose from. And better yet, a staff that knows exactly what they’re talking about when it comes to both food and wine As a big part of the community, Long encourages locals to come in and experience Le Charenton. With a smile I thanked the guest for their understanding, still thinking nothing of it when the guest informed me that this would be his wife’s last meal before starting surgery prep to rid her body of cancer and that they “were going to savor every moment from tonight forward like (we) should have been savoring every moment prior to now.” Two big smiles looked up at me and I couldn’t help but chuckle from deep within. A lesson that everyone could stand to learn. In a world full of complaints, grudges, hurried business, impatience, thanklessness, selfishness and so many squeaky wheels from the daily grind I stood there in front of two people facing a world of future uncertainty yet living in the moment of current thankfulness and bliss. I urge everyone during the holiday season to spend time doing whatever you want to do, however you want to do it, with whomever you choose to do it with but approach each and every moment and person you encounter with a spirit of gratefulness, patience, care and kindness. We could all stand to be surrounded with a bit more positivity but I am a firm believer that others will reflect what you put out. Be thankful, be loving and have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Once a commodity in ancient history and now a popular supplement, ginger is sought after for its medicinal benefits. As part of the plant family closely associated with turmeric and cardamom, a key component called gingerol makes ginger a robust antioxidant and vigorous anti-inflammatory agent. As a universally known superfood and natural remedy, ginger is responsible for curing many health issues from indigestion and nausea to cancer and heart disease. As a personal favorite of many, ginger is a strong flavor with a piquant and somewhat spicy sting that provides a tangy kick to an array of popular dishes. This long loved root has been held high for its pungent and edible properties in many cultures. Ginger is 62

best when chosen fresh as it is higher in gingerol which will have a greater effect health wise. Matured ginger is most commonly used as it has a tough skin and needs to be peeled by the consumer. However, many speciality markets will sell ginger in a variety of forms from soft to tough, fresh to dry and made available in pickled, candied and crystalized forms. While ginger may be a delightful tasting additive, be wary of adding too much too early, as the potency alters with timing. The earlier it is added, the more influence the ginger will play on your culinary collections. Time to grab those juicers, saucepans and graders as ginger is both a beneficial and tasteful addition to hot teas, juices, sauces and a variety of food dishes.

RECIPES:
2 tablespoons olive oil 1 ¼ pound of small parsnips, peeled and quartered 1 ½ teaspoons fresh ginger, minced Salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Cut parsnips into quartered pieces, about 4 per parsnip. Peel and mince fresh ginger. Spread olive oil into a 9 by 13 inch baking dish. Combine parsnips, ginger and salt and pepper into bowl. Toss to coat. Add combination from bowl onto oil-covered baking dish. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes until parsnips look tender. Serve immediately. Have some fun these holidays as festivities offer up a good opportunity to show off some of those hidden skills. Whether you are sabering a champagne bottle for all your colleagues to see or planning a party that looks like a real-life Pinterest board, you are sure to leave everyone impressed. Here are a few of our favorites.
MASON JAR MARGARITAS:
That’s right, worry no more. Prep margaritas and other cocktails before your guests arrive! Mix up large cocktail recipes in pitchers, then pour into Mason Jars to make smaller servings. Place Mason Jar cocktails in a bucket of ice for guests to grab. Have ice on the side to add into premade cocktails when guests grab them.
COOL WINE QUICKLY WITH SALT:
That’s right, I said salt. Place wine into a bucket filled with ice and water. Pour salt on top of the ice in the bucket. This helps reduce the freezing point, making your wine cold in minutes!
USE ORNAMENTS AS A TABLE DECORATION:
Take ornaments from your tree or extras and tie to the front of cinched napkins to liven up the look of your dinner table. This is a great way to fancy-up your favorite holiday festivity. Extra points for matching the tree.
SABERING A CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE:
(Warning: take caution and do at your own risk) Peel down aluminum foil covering the top of the champagne bottle. Begin to loosen the metal caging around the cork of the champagne. Do NOT take it all the way off. Gently lift it enough close to the top lip section. Be very careful as the cork could fly off and potentially hurt someone or break something. Take the dull side (top) of a large knife and follow along the seam of the bottle (will find the seam running down the length of the bottle). Run the knife flat along the side striking the lip of the cork and metal caging with the dull side of the knife, causing the champagne to open. Spillage may occur.
PERSONAL VEGGIE DIP BOWLS:
PEEL A CLOVE OF GARLIC IN LESS THAN 10 SECONDS:
Put your culinary guru friends to shame when you show them how peeling garlic is really done. First lay cloves out across a counter or table. Then, take the bottom of a large metal bowl and smash the cloves until they are in pieces. Gather all the cloves into the bowl. Take another bowl of the same size and cover the original bowl. Shake the smashed up garlic cloves between the two bowls. Garlic will naturally separate from their peel. 66

Take a bread baguette and slice down at an angle into multiple pieces. Take the small pieces and scoop bread bits out. Don’t cut out too much as you want to make sure and leave a bottom, mimicking a bread bowl. Fill small bread bowls with a dip, preferably homemade. Next, slice up veggies of your choice. Carrots, cucumbers and celery work best as they are easy to slice and good for dipping. Lastly, place the veggies into the dip-filled mini bread bowls.
