ith each passing issue, all of us here at Lavish try to bring the community fun, entertaining stories and trends that shape this amazing place we live in. With so much constantly changing around us, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of schedules and become overwhelmed. When we allow outside influences take over our minds and actions, we can honestly miss all the good that surrounds us. This is true today not only with my staff, but with myself also. With so much change surrounding my life, I have needed to take a step back this past month and really focus on what I am truly thankful for. I feel extremely blessed to be able to continue what I love to do, have amazing new friendships and a place to call home. My refuge at the end of the day is a glass of wine watching the amazing sunsets over the hills. All the chaos and negativity of the day seems to wither away and am able to find a glimpse of peace, if even for just a moment. As this weather heats up and our lives get more busy by the day, take a little time for yourself. Allow all the good that surrounds you to appear and take hold of it.   For the latest in the ever changing summer fashions, please read on to see our Essential Transitional spread where we show you how to create the perfect day-to-night look. All outfits courtesy of our friends at Button Up Boutique in Roseville. While you have that perfect summer look, summertime is the perfect time to enjoy our areas best in nightlife. The longer days and warmer nights are begging us to stay out past our norm. Check out our Spirit of Summer feature, where we spotlight some of the best places to go enjoy good eats and amazing beverages with friends. We scoured the area to bring you the latest on the best places to visit in El Dorado Hills, Folsom and Roseville. (I know, tough job for my editorial team…) These spots will sure to leave you with new friends and great new finds to go and try again.    If you're looking for a little extra heat, our travel editor has the best places to see and visit in San Antonio, the perfect Texas destination, full of fun family activities. Just a short plane trip away, bring your boots and stride through the lovely canals lined with amazing restaurants, bars and boutiques. A must see and do! In the mood for a good brew? Folsom Tap House, this month's Sip & Savor opener, is a great location to visit and cool down with a cold beverage and awesome food.    As always, thank you for your loyal readership. JORDENNE

Burns

BY KELSEY WEHSELS | PHOTO PHIL DOYLE

She has graced several of our issues with her beauty as one of our models, even appearing on a few of our covers. But one thing you didn’t know about Jordenne Burns is that she is a rodeo queen.   Currently the Redding Rodeo Queen, she has previously been the Rowell Ranch Rodeo Queen and High School Rodeo Queen. “Horses have always been, and always will be a big part of my life,” she said. “When my family moved to Placerville nine years ago, I joined District 3 High School Rodeo.” LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

15

LOL

LAVISH ON LOCALS

Competing in barrel racing and pole bending, she found her passion for the rodeo. While her family had always enjoyed the rodeo, they had never gotten involved, so she was able to show her parents, brother and sister, her achievements. “The opportunity to make lasting friendships, promote High School Rodeo, and educate my fellow classmates on the sport of rodeo was an unforgettable opportunity,” she added.   After having graduated from Ponderosa High School, Burns is furthering her education at Folsom Lake College, with the plan to attend a state university next year. She hopes to combine her business major with her passion for Western fashion and create a successful career.    As the reigning Redding Rodeo Queen, her duties include attending different rodeos and parades to promote her rodeo. This month, she will be attending the Folsom Rodeo. In fact, she will be doing quite a bit of traveling this year, going to rodeos in Redding, Red Bluff, Folsom, Livermore, Salinas, and Reno. “We work a lot with kids, providing education,” she said. “I love working with the kids because they ask a lot of funny questions.” And she chose the Redding

Rodeo because she likes representing the rodeo and their fundraisers and events, such as “chicks n chaps,” a breast cancer awareness fundraiser. She also enjoys the special kids day, chili cook offs, among other events.    Burns explains that becoming a rodeo queen is hard work. The contest includes several different components such as horseback riding events, a public speech, an interview, and a written test. “The most important aspects to the competition are horsemanship and public speaking,” said Burns. After her reign as the Redding Rodeo Queen comes to a close, she will run for Miss Rodeo California the following year, since she will be finishing school this spring. “I have never run before,” she explained. “I have been preparing for this for a long time.”    For Miss Rodeo California, up to 15 girls compete at one time for the title in Lancaster, CA, and is held in conjunction with the California Circuit Finals Rodeo. And if Burns wins that title, she will go on to compete for Miss Rodeo America in Las Vegas, which is held with the National Finals Rodeo, the Super Bowl of rodeo.

“Horses have always been, and always will be a big part of my life."

of Sierra Foothills BY SERENA PIPER

All too often we don’t remember there are faces behind the organizations that help us in times of need. Without them, the quality of living would not be as high as it could be for families, children, and the elderly. Philanthropic organizations are full of giving people ready and willing to ease social problems and prevent them from happening again. Everyday, the 20

El Dorado community is benefiting from the hard work of those in the Assistance League of Sierra Foothills.   The national non-profit is responsible for several significant programs, including Assault Survivor Kits, which provides bags with items an assault survivor might need upon leaving the hospital; Books and Beyond, which pairs up a volunteer and

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

child at school to read to each other and practice comprehension; and S.M.I.L.E., a senior enrichment program which provides intermutual activities to seniors in assisted living facilities. In El Dorado County, the 100+ members work to raise funds through three annual fundraisers, hands-on involvement, and grants and donations. The League’s volunteers include retired educators and school administrators, corporate and medical professionals, designers, and real estate brokers, to name a few. Last year, they contributed more than 15,300 volunteer hours. Each volunteer has special, personal reasons for joining, including the organization’s founders and presidents.    “As many of our volunteers, I was invited by a friend to attend a monthly member meeting in January 2014,” President of the Assistance League Carol Kovak said. “I quickly became involved in event planning, joined several committees, and was asked to join the Board of Directors as President-Elect with the intent of becoming President during the 2015-16 fiscal year.” This year, the Assistance League has several goals, one of which is expanding the number of children clothed through what is their most successful program, Operation School Bell® which provides new school clothing for disadvantaged children; they hope to reach 600 children, which is only 11% of the children in need. Principals from the schools they help have called in to give thanks, noting “a boost in the children’s self-esteem when they returned to school,” Green Valley School Principal Kathy Miracle said.   However, like many charities, the League depends on the donations of others. “We are capable of clothing thousands of children; we are limited only by our available funds,” Susan Tyler, Vice President of Philanthropic Programs said. “The more grants, private donations and community support of our fundraisers; the more children we can clothe!” And the more programs they can add, expand, and improve. To learn more about how you can help the Assistance League help improve the lives of countless socio-economically disadvantaged families, visit: www.sierrafoothills.assistanceleague.org

LAVISH ON LOCALS

LOL

TRENDING

We are now in the fire season, which means we are especially vulnerable due to the dry weather. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has issued a homeowners checklist to help keep your home fire safe. Here are a few notable items off that list.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME FIRE SAFE

The outside of your home is a good place to start. Make sure the design and construction of your home is safe from fire hazards. Enclose the underside of eaves, balconies, and above ground decks with fire resistant materials, and contact qualified individuals to perform electrical maintenance and repairs.

Access away from a fire is very important. Identify at least 2 exit routes from your neighborhood and clear all flammable vegetation at least 10 feet away from roads and 5 feet from driveways. Install a fire resistant roof and remove all dead leaves and needles from your roof and gutters. Outdoor landscaping plays a large role in fire safety for the home. If possible, landscape with fire resistant plants and maintain all plants with regular water and keep dead branches, leaves, and needles removed. When clearing vegetation, use care when operating equipment such as lawnmowers. One small spark may start a fire; a string trimmer is much safer.    An outdoor emergency water supply is essential, make sure to create east firefighter access to your closest emergency water source. There are several measures you can take inside the home to ensure fire safety. In the kitchen, keep a working fire extinguisher and install curtains and towel holders away from stove burners. Install smoke detectors between living and sleep areas, and if you sleep with the door closed, install a smoke detector in the bedroom. Be sure to test the smoke detectors monthly, replacing batteries twice a year.   Replace all electrical cords that do not work properly, have loose connections, or are frayed. In the bathroom, keep items such as towels away from wall and floor heaters, and always be sure to disconnect appliances such as curling irons and hair dryers when you’re done. Be prepared for any disaster by maintaining at least a three day water supply of drinking water, and food that does not require refrigeration and generally does not need cooking. And last but not least, always make sure to have a designated emergency meeting place outside the home. Following these steps will create a safe and ease of mind summer. Outdoor Expressions BY SERENA PIPER

Decorating is one of the most exciting parts of having a house. Choosing colors, styles of furniture, and figuring out the overall flow is what makes it a home. It says to your visitors what kind of person you are. One part of decorating we often neglect is the outdoor portion. Believe it or not, there are many ways to fix up your backyard so that it is just as warm and welcoming.

Grilling Station

At any home supply store, you’ll find a cart to use as a sidekick to your grilling station. Be sure it has a shelf and drawer space underneath for easy, accessible storage so you don’t end up running in and out of the house for things. Plop a barbecuer in a rich color next to the cart and you’ve got something sleek and classy for entertaining. Adding in a few potted plants or flowers next to it will spruce it up even more. 26

Comfortable Seating

• There are several ways to incorporate comfortable places to sit. You want enough seating that guests won’t have to play musical chairs, but not enough that it overtakes your kitchen. One way to do this is to build a pergola, a fancy name for a garden structure built over a seating area. Stack cement bricks or pallets on top of eachother until you achieve your desired height, and then add some patterned cushions and pillows for coziness. A soft throw will come in handy for those cooler summer nights. • Another way to incorporate seating is by arranging a couple sofas underneath a gazebo. Turn a boring patio into an outdoor eden by adding flower boxes around the border.

Lighting

Twinkle lights, chandeliers, lanterns, oh my! If you’re on a budget and worried about going over, don’t. There are plenty of affordable options that will still allow you to have money left over for other kitchen details.

• If you’re a DIY-er, a trip to the home improvement store and a few hooks to stake into the ground will have you off and running. Use them to hang mason jar lanterns (available at any craft store) and place LED lights or tea light candles in them. • Globe string lights work well with gazebos and pergolas because you can easily wind the light cord around the structure. An affordable option, globe lights can be found in the garden section of any store. • Whether you’re having a casual get-together or a formal, more intimate dinner, placing miniature LED lights ($17 for a pack of 100) in the surrounding trees or bushes will give your special setup that extra pizzaz. 28

Sink Station

When you have guests over, it can be a distraction having them run in and out of the house to wash hands, dishes, etc. Save time and conversation by installing an outdoor sink. If you like to build things yourself, there are always easy DIY tutorials online, or an assistant at a Home Depot or Lowes will be able to tell you what you need. The basics are a simple structure and a drop-in sink, which you can pick up at any local hardware store. Speak with a professional regarding the necessary plumbing necessities. Add something colorful or vintage by scouring local home boutiques for the perfect look.

Umbrella or Canopy

Summer is upon us and so is the heat. Make sure you and your guests are protected from the sun by using either an over-sized umbrella or a canopy. Go with traditional white to keep things cooler, or pick out a fabric with a pop of color.

Take your time! Summer is here and soon you’ll be eating outdoors a lot more often! LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

SAN ANTONIO

San ANTONIO THE RIVER WALK, THE ALAMO, SPANISH MISSIONS, FIESTA EVENTS AND A FEW SURPRISES! BY DON AND ANN JACKSON

For many years we’ve talked about visiting San Antonio and experiencing our country’s 7th largest city and especially the famous River Walk. Finally the time arrived just a few weeks ago and we packed our saddlebags to fly off to the Longhorn State.

WHAT TO SEE and DO:

Our biggest and most pleasant surprises involved numerous characteristics of the River Walk. First and foremost we were amazed at the length, breadth, ongoing expansion and the extensive upgrading of this famous attraction. No wonder other U.S. cities are trying to do similar river walk projects. Secondly we discovered that you could actually drive though the downtown 46

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

and if you stayed in your car driving the city streets you could actually miss seeing the city’s most famous feature. It actually flows much lower than the town’s building structures and streets so can remain hidden if you don’t make the effort to seek it out. We were also unaware that the walk actually is on both sides of the San Antonio River which doubles the fun! And when you do explore the Walk it reels you in with so many things to do and see that you could spend a few days just trying to maximize your Walk experiences. Strolling the Walk you’ll find literally hundreds of things to draw your interest such as upscale restaurants, bars, nightclubs, boutiques, sidewalk cafes and attractions. Taking a river boat cruise was

really a highlight and gives you a totally different perspective of the River Walk than walking the shore, especially if your boat’s guide/pilot was as informative and humorous as ours. www.riosanantonio.com.   The Alamo, another no-brainer attraction to visit and one of the most famous battle sites in Texas and United States history revealed another surprise. It was established in 1718 as the cities first mission and much later converted into an army garrison and fort now known as The Alamo-Shrine of Texas Liberty. Be sure to sign up for an audio tour to learn all the details of that historic era and about the infamous 1836 battles that took place between the Mexican armies under General Santana and the American armies under General Sam Houston. All the American military were killed at The Alamo, including famous frontiersmen like Sam Bowie (Bowie knife fame) and Davy Crockett yet, it should be noted that the Mexican Army spared all the women and children. Soon after the Alamo loss, Houston’s army defeated Santana’s troops at the famous Battle of San Jacinto. www.thealamo.org.   Another highlight of our visit was experiencing Fiesta San Antonio, our country’s premier Spanish Heritage event, and it was muy magnifico! It all started in 1891 with just one parade to honor the memory of the heroes of The Alamo siege and the Battle of San Jacinto. This is San Antonio’s largest festival with over 100 different events such as balls, carnivals, concerts and numerous parades and 2016 will mark their 125th anniversary. Highlights are the Floating River Parade down San Antonio River where the floats really do float and the Battle of the Flowers, the largest and most spectacular of the parades. If you don’t mind large crowds and love a ton of activities and

maybe even wild late night revelry you can’t go wrong heading off to San Antonio in April of any year. www. fiesta-sa.org    San Antonio Missions National Park provided another surprise: it’s a rare National Park because it includes four Spanish Missions that are active catholic churches: San Jose, Concepcion, San Juan and Espada. In our eyes, they are not quite as well preserved or as beautiful as most of the California Missions, yet they are so important to U.S. and Texas history, they are definitely worth a visit and are close-by drives. www.nps.gov/saan Briscoe Western Art Museum, San Antonio Botanical Garden, The Witte Museum, McNay Art Museum, The Doseum(a new children’s innovative exploratorium), San Antonio Museum of Art are all worth checking out their websites to determine your interest level. Our personal favorite: The Briscoe! www.briscoemuseum.org; www. sabot.org; www.mcnayart.org, www.wittemuseum.org; www.sakids.org; www.samuseum.org

WHERE TO STAY and DINE:   We unpacked those saddlebags referred

to earlier at the Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk for our first ever lodging experience at a Drury property and boy were we impressed. The staff was exceptionally friendly, rooms were very comfortable, the location setting directly on the River Walk was perfecto. Their slogan “The Extras Aren’t Extra” says everything when you realize all these are complimentary: full buffet breakfast; an evening hot food and cold beverage/cocktail party; local phone calls; sodas and popcorn seven hours a day; and more. Even though most of our meals had been prearranged outside the hotel, our one breakfast experience was exceptionally good. www.druryhotels.com Our best dining memory was at the Liberty Bar where par excellence innovative cuisine lived up to the hype and matched the stunning late 1800’s majestic building that once housed a former convent. www.liberty-bar.com. We also had a very nice meal at the Boiler House located in the historic Pearl Brewery Complex that

SAN ANTONIO   Another day trip option would require a very early morning start and a late night return to San Antonio. And here’s the plan: Head about an hour northwest through Texas Hill Country, known for their wineries, and explore the town of Fredericksburg, one of Texas’ most visited small town destinations. This popular community has a strong German heritage and a number of Deutschland restaurants serving traditional Germanic cuisine. www.fbgtx.org. Next up make the 24 minute drive due east to visit the fascinating Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park, also known as Johnson’s Texas White House and the LBJ Ranch where Johnson was born, lived, died and was buried. www.nps.gov.   For the last segment drive about an hour due east to Austin, the Texas Capital, home to the University of Texas and another surprise to us: it recently increased its’ population to become our country’s 11th largest city. The two main things to see in Austin are the State’s Capitol building, claiming to be the largest in our country and the LBJ Library on the U. of T. Longhorn’s campus. Known as the live music capital of the world you might try to catch a local show and dine at one of the city’s famous bar-b-q spots. www. austintexas.org. Now leave enough time to make the hour drive back south to your own ‘ranch bunkhouse’ in San Antonio.

features award winning creative Texas Hill Country fare. This historic brewery campus is currently undergoing a total revitalization plan to include more restaurants, shops and a first class boutique hotel. Once this mixed-use center (already including an amphitheater by-theriver and the third campus of the Culinary Institute of America) has the hotel completed and spaces all leased, it should become one of the city’s premier destinations. www.boilerhousesa.com www.pearlfarmersmarket.com. San Antonio is famous for their authentic Mexican restaurants and we have 2 first rate choices to recommend: Mi Tierra Cafe is conveniently located downtown in the famous Market Square (AKA El Mercado-the largest Mexican market in the U.S.). And since El Mercado needs to be on your strolling list, Mi Tierra is the perfect dining spot to enhance your Mercado visit; La Fogata Restaurant is a further drive from town but worthwhile if time permits. www.mitierracafe. com; www.lafogata.com. And for all things San Antonio visit: www.visitsanantonio.com 48

NEARBY Day Trips

When friends ask us about visiting San Antonio we encourage them to spend at least a week in this fascinating city as there is so much to see and do and still maintain a relaxed pace. We also encourage them to stick around a few extra days to consider making a couple of brief side trips to nearby locations. After a short 30 minute drive from downtown we had two memorable outings: Natural Bridge Caverns (largest Cavern in Texas) and Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch (a wildlife safari type experience without the expensive airfare to Africa). www.naturalbridgecaverns.com; www. wildliferanchtexas.com. Driving another twenty minutes east will take you to the city of New Braunfels and the National Register’s Historic District of Gruene. This fascinating ‘little town within the town’ is home to the best and funkiest general store in the Southwest and an 1878 dancehall venue that has never closed and still features name entertainment. www.gruenetexas.com.

(Editor’s note: next month our travel team will be bringing our readers their inside report on visiting Pasadena, home to the world famous Rose Parade)

SAVOR

Every neighborhood has that one special spot where people always gather for great food, delicious drinks, and a great atmosphere. For Folsom, that place is the Folsom Tap House. A casual bar and grill established in April 2014, it is known for its “excellent” food, say the reviewers on Yelp, and 22 unique craft beers.    Stacey Belkin, the owner, began her culinary career at the age of 15 as a busser for the Tahoe Donner Golf Club. She’s been involved in the workings of a restaurant ever since, including owning a few in the Bay Area before selling in 2010, the first step in leading the way to the Folsom. quality menu that appeals to everyone,” said Belkin. However, she assures us the restaurant will still have their infamous burgers.    Just outside the dining area is the dog-friendly patio, where more than enough tables are ready for appetizers and conversation while a furry best friend lies underfoot. With personable staff, and sports games always on TV, what’s not to love? Locals can cash in on Mondays, where locals receive 10% off their entire bill from 6-10pm, and on Wednesdays all bottles of beer and wine are 25% off. In the future, the restaurant will become something very special, “like the Cheers of Folsom,” said Belkin. “My goal is to be Folsom’s favorite neighborhood place, where everyone feels welcome and has a great time dining with us,” said Belkin. Belkin had previously been the manager of the owner at the Back Wine Bar, and he had kept her in mind as the restaurant’s successor. “One day I agreed to come take a look at it and decided it had a lot of untapped potential, so after spending a month evaluating it, I agreed to take it on,” said Belkin.   Part of taking over was learning the already existing basics of the restaurant before she could implement her own policies and procedures. “We all know no one likes change, so at times it’s been difficult to create a new culture,” said Belkin. Yelp reviewers will tell you her changes were a success. New outdoor furniture, updated music on the sound system, and a few more talented culinary team members were among the improvements. “I spend every day working with and coaching 52

my team to ensure we are giving the best food and service we can,” said Belkin.   Because not everyone likes beer, Belkin has added a few signature cocktails (she recommends the Stacey’s Cosmopolitan) and wines. The menu features fresh Californiastyle food, as well as her mouthwatering BBQ ribs, which she says her previous customers went “crazy” for. Be sure to try the BBQ Beef short ribs, Cobb salad, or Burrata, which is a rich, fresh mozzarella cheese with cream. If you’re feeling adventurous, go for the mini creme brulee for dessert. Made with chocolate porter and served with maple bacon whipped cream, it’s a brave twist on a classic treat. “Our goal is to take this place from being just bar food and mostly burgers and apps to more of a seasonal, higher

DINING OUT WITH NICK

DINING OUT

with

Nick ONE AND DONE. BY NICK DEDIER

I remember when I moved up to El Dorado Hills from Napa so that I could open Aji Japanese Bistro. One of my daily tasks was to go out and mingle in the community, strike up a few conversations, make some friends and generally ask people what kinds of experiences they liked in a restaurant. “Family Oriented” was a popular response. “Good Value” came in a close second. “Great Food” came in third and so the list was developed. We checked each box with confidence yet the one question that I would ask people which resulted in a few twisted brows or shaking heads was “What about a good late night spot for a cocktail and snacks?” I was surprised by how many people seemed shocked by the idea of a great meal after 8pm.    In The City (any city really) that was when our biggest rushes came 8pm -9pm; a steady stream of nighttime revelers who were out to enjoy a great cocktail, some music, food and great company. The evidence for this devalued time slot for dining was number one on Nick Dedier the list we are in a “family oriented” demographic. Yet hard headedly we decided to remain open with full service until 9pm on the weekdays and until 11pm on Friday & Saturday in a steadfast vigil waiting for the Field of Dreams mentality to break through. “If you build it, they will come”    In our first six months we went through some lonely late hours at the end of the night; candles lit, music on, staff ready after their early rush with no evidence of even a set of car headlights in the parking lot let along an 8:30 diner. Yet through perseverance, consistency and offering an absolutely killer happy hour 7 days per week both early and after 8pm we have begun to see a late night crowd grow from just a few couples to a few randomly packed weeknights and weekends with people eating street foods and drinking craft cocktails.    If you’re someone like me, someone who loves a bit of fashion, dim lights, good food, maybe a band, and a late evening out with a partner or a group of friends, you have to actually put in work to find a great place to hang out. Unlike the city where late pops and plates are on every corner, this area requires some research to find a late spot that raises the bar from the 2am watering holes. 54

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

Some of my favorite spots in El Dorado Hills are: Aji, with full disclosure that I own this restaurant. We serve a full menu until 11pm on the weekends with a happy hour that runs 8pm - Close… Seven days per week. Additionally there is no better Cocktail bar in the area. Simple craft cocktails, an amazing seasonal punch and a very hefty selection of small batch whiskeys. Hop House in the Town Center. Jason throws a weekly party with a trivia night, a live music night and so many rotating handles of craft beers it will make your head spin. If you’re out for a night with a lot of energy and some good grub with the potential of a House rocking band, then this is your spot. 36 Handles in the Montano Center here in El Dorado Hills provides a place where you can have a great cocktail, a shot of Jameson or as their name suggests one of Thirty Six Handles. Richard provides a comfortable setting with dart boards a few pool tables and a full menu that runs well past 8pm. Ruffhaus in Town Center has just been named best hot dog in the Sacramento area and I have to say I find myself here often eating a classic chicago, a mobster italian beef or the best fried pickles on the planet. Chuck also has over 15 local beers on tap and with some local open mic style talent this is a good place to have an early dinner or a late dog. One of the best pieces of advice I can give anyone for finding a great spot to hang out late is to hang out where you feel most comfortable. Also if you need an inside track, ask your favorite lunchtime bartender where they hang out at night or if they have a recommendation based on what you’re looking for they will be able to point you in the direction of a great band, a good date spot, a good menu or a spot to let loose.

Most importantly have fun and stay out late, you deserve an extra hour of fun time.

TURLEY Wine Cellars BY LAUREN CLIFFORD

If you’re looking for a winery that has mastered the art of crafting some of the best Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs in Northern California, then you have met your match. Turley Wine Cellars has hands down certified themselves as some of the best in the business when it comes to these full bodied and ripe wines rich in aromatic and fruity flavors. Founded in 1993 by proprietor Larry Turley, this vineyard has been a vast success since the beginning. Turley, a southern native raised in Georgia, branched out to Northern California where he started his career as an ER physician.

Years later he found his love for wine and the people and land in which he lived, and we’re sure glad he did. Located in Plymouth and overlooking rolling hills of green vines, Turley vineyards is a gem when it comes to crafting plush and vintage wines, most of which appear on some of the best wines lists. Turley Wine Cellars makes and produces over twenty-eight separate wines from thirty-five different vineyards. 56

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

All vineyards are certified organic and use all natural yeasts during the fermentation process. But that’s just a couple highlights when it comes to Turley’s stellar reputation in the wine business. Turley himself aims to preserve and continue to uphold Northern California’s winemaking process and culture. If you enjoy being a part of California’s winemaking history and wish to enjoy a vintage taste of California’s ancient vineyards, then take a trip to Turley wines and discover this shared love of wine with Turley and his group of professional and experienced winemakers.   The reason Turley Wine Cellars is not only a top choice when it comes to choosing a winery to visit, but the place to go if you want an authentic taste of California lies in Larry Turley’s dedication to the land and preservation of old vineyards. This is what makes Turley Vineyards so different from all others, Larry Turley decided to focus on restoring and using old vines, some even dating back to the 1800’s to craft his award winning wine with. The depth of the old vines gives the wine produced from these vineyards a unique taste in which no other vineyard has. Restoring old vines to their former state is not a simple process, but one that takes time, dedication, hard work, and a lot of love for wine. So, if you’re looking for a winery with some history, depth, and a variety of pungent and one of a kind wines, Turley is the place for you.

Delicato Family

Vineyards BY LAUREN CLIFFORD

Delicato Family Vineyards has been a successful and prosperous wine company for over ninety years in our lovely hills of Northern California. You could say that growing grapes and making wine runs in their blood, as the Indelicato family has been operating this business since day one. First established in 1924, Gaspare Indelicato founded the family’s first vineyard and continued to pass the art of winemaking down from generation to

58

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

generation. And indeed, growing grapes and making wine has become quite the family trait inherited from the founder, patriarch, or better known as grandfather, Gaspare.   Today the fruits of Gaspare’s labor have paid off, as the third generation of the Indelicato family now runs and operates the wine business and continues to make their family name one that is widely recognized and respected in Northern California. The main and first vineyard, located in Manteca is ranked among the top ten wineries in the U.S. and has one of the largest revenue growth in the wine industry today. There is now about 60,000 acres of vineyards that belong to the Indelicato family in different locations such as; San Bernabe in Monterey County, Clay Station located in Lodi, and Black Stallion Estate Winery located in Napa Valley.   The third generation of the Indelicato family not only continue to uphold their grandfather’s standard for quality by consistently maintaining their vineyards and carefully overlooking the planting and farming of their beloved grapes. But most importantly, they uphold their grandfather’s farming philosophy of sustaining the viability of the land and maintaining as much as a natural habitat for the wildlife in the existing area as possible. They also conduct sensory evaluations before they bottle every wine, including tests on the corks they use. If this doesn’t scream high quality, I’m not sure what does. It’s no shock then that this company and their numerous vineyards are widely successful and appreciated in Northern California, as

they turn the process of wine making into a beautiful art, one that we can enjoy a countless number of times with our palettes.    Current CEO and President of this cherished family owned business, Chris Indelicato, grew up as a kid on the winery in Manteca along with the rest of the children in the family. This is where they learned the tricks of the trade as they helped their father and uncles harvest the grapes, tend the vineyard, bottle the wine, and assist in the tasting room. It is no wonder then that this winery and company is such a success with a tight knit family that shares the passion for making premium wines and presenting the lucky locals with a variety of breathtaking vineyards to enjoy and visit. Delicato Family Vineyards is a name known for quality with top selection wines and numerous brands that all contain grapes harvesting form Napa, Lodi, Monterey and Sonoma, just to ensure diversity in every bottle. This family owned business continues to be innovative and consistent in the wonderful world of wine and the Delicato Vineyard is definitely one worth a visit, or two.

Season Delight

SEASON DELIGHT CHERRIES

CHERRIES BY EMILY GUERRERO

It’s cherry picking season and the reasons for you to indulge are endless. Cherries, like many other fruits and vegetables, are one the most amazing parts of California produce. Here in Northern California, you can most likely enjoy fresh cherries direct from the farm to your table without them ever leaving your zip code. From the side of the road stands to orchards throughout Yolo County, Auburn, and El Dorado Hills, they are everywhere and their plethora of health benefits basically make them sell themselves. To find local picking sites for a great family trip or romantic date, visit www.pickyourown.com/CA.

60

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

Besides the sweet red body of the fruit and dozens of dessert recipes, cherries are a powerful boost to many diets and eating plans. First, they offer an extremely high amount of antioxidant protection, meaning they assist your body in capturing toxins and flushing them from your system. Also, the cherry’s resilient nature makes them chock full of vitamins that provide cancer-preventative, anti-inflammatory, and cell regenerative properties. Furthermore, they also carry a small amount of melatonin which promotes natural and healthy sleep. To call cherries a super food might not even do them justice. From dessert to detox, make sure to capitalize on cherries this summer.

ETIQUETTE

FINAL THOUGHT

HOSTING A

Summer

BBQ BY EMILY GUERRERO

For all you hostesses (and hosts) out there brimming with summer excitement and festive backyard decor, are you ready to BBQ? With just a few easy steps and beforehand prep, you can throw the backyard shindig that’ll have your neighbors knocking at the door every single weekend. But like all good things, never forget how to host with care or you just might be setting fire to much more than a bag of coal. MAKE IT COOL WITH THE POOL

Having a pool is a double edged sword, it’s fun to take a dip in the 100+ degree weather but it also means you have more responsibility than the everyday BBQer. To be the diving board queen, remember to stock up on beach towels and floaties. While proper etiquette suggests guests bring their own absorption, you can’t teach everyone to be considerate and it just might save your wooden floors and carpets from lots of damp feet as they scurry to the powder room.

BUILD ME UP BUTTERCUP

GRILL INTERRUPTED

No BBQ is complete without a grill (and it’s grill master), so be sure to prep the barbeque before your event. To ensure your grill is up to the task at hand follow these steps 24 hours before your event, especially if your party is on a holiday when local stores might be closed. 1) Get a full tank of propane or purchase necessary charcoal and lighter fluid. Remember to recycle your old propane tank. Go earth! 2) Clean that grill. Crispy chunks are great unless it’s charred fish from two weeks ago. The best cleaning is done on a hot grill. 3) Make sure you have the proper utensils. A kitchen fork doesn’t count, spring for the giant spatula because only you can prevent backyard fires.

Dessert is a must at Sacramento area summer BBQ’s. When you’re sweating it out in the heat of our glorious high desert, a cool, sweet treat is the perfect way to send your company home pleasantly full. Great summer desserts can be as simple as ice cream sandwiches or homemade strawberry shortcake. You could also try homemade ice cream if you’re really looking to keep up with the Jones’, or whatever your cool neighbors name might be.

THE SIDE DISH SLIDE

A good host makes all their own side dishes, but a great host delegates because there is a party to be had and they aren’t about to stay cooped up in the kitchen. When it comes to throwing a party, it’s more than okay to share the fare with your guests. Ask each to bring a side dish to cut costs and prep time. Just provide one or two great options like grilled corn or slice watermelon for an easy and delicious dish and let the company do the rest. Many BBQ hosts even suggest their guest bring some grillable delights to add in with their own plan. Awesome suggestions include onions, zucchini and squash, asparagus and peaches (yes peaches on the grill). BASK IN THE BOOZE

If BBQ’s aren’t the time for a summer shandy, then nothing is. The biggest tip for success in a summer cookout is drink variation and quality. Be sure to provide lots of chilled beverages like beer or a house cocktail to keep your guest relaxed and cool in the midday sun. But no matter the amount of liquid courage in your cooler, no BBQ is complete without sodas or lemonade and bottled water. And tip to all you newbies out there, buy a big bag of ice. Just do it. Happy grilling! 64
