HAPPY
Holidays! W
“If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it.” – William Arthur Ward
ell everyone, December is here, which means 2015 is in its last month. It’s always exciting to look forward to the New Year and see what it has in store for us here at Lavish. December is also the official start of winter, which means cooler weather and hopefully lots of rain and snow! Skiing is one of my favorite wintertime activities, and the start to the season has definitely not disappointed! We are so close to some amazing resorts, feeling so blessed to be a part of this great community and to already have a handful of ski days in! Speaking of fun wintertime activities, be sure to check out our “50 Things to Do This Winter” feature where we highlight some Must-Do’s this season for the hibernators, wanderers, foodies, entertainers, and those who like a little pampering. We searched near and far for the best of the best this season and our local businesses will surely not disappoint! Our cover this month is the amazing Cinnamon Old Fashioned from Aji Japanese Bistro. A must try, so delicious! We also had a fun time shooting our holiday fashion feature. It was a lot of work shooting at three separate locations on three separate days, but it turned out fantastic. We want to thank our friends at Button Up Boutique, Apricot Lane and Article Consignment Boutique for styling our models and keeping us in the know about the upcoming seasonal trends. Also making it’s debut is this month is the gorgeous new restaurant, Milestone, in El Dorado Hills. Truly, a stunning new spot to take family and friends. We could not be more proud of Nick, Alexa and Chef Russell. Cheers to many years of success to you all! As always, thank you for your loyal readership! I look forward to seeing you all next year!

Making a difference and teaching the community about fashion and style, while shopping responsibly is the mission of Juniper James, a fashion consulting company and boutique located in Sacramento. In fact, they have managed to shorten this concept into four simple words: “body, city, earth positive.”

Juniper James' Bicycle Runway Fashion Show at the Crocker Art Museum
Local Sacramento native and founder of Juniper James, Kari Shipman, never saw herself having a career in fashion as she was a journalism/English major in college. In fact, she claims she fell backwards into it, thanks to an abrupt job shift and pushy friends. Working at a school for special education students with violent autistic high school students, her program was cut after budget cuts befell the school district. After working there for 6 years, she had found herself looking for work with a friend. “She had co-founded a co-working space in midtown, and I spent my days surrounded by people who worked for themselves and followed their passions,”
Shipman possessed. “I styled a couple of skeptical friends and the rest is history,” she said. The name “Juniper James” came from a combination of one of her favorite childhood smells (juniper) and a close family friend who she saw living out their dreams. While Juniper James styles men, most of their clients are local women who reach out to them via referral, visibility at events, or social media. “We get to style a lot of women in transition, whether it’s going from staying at home with little ones, back out into the workforce, or vice versa,” she explained. Juniper James hosts 1-2 events per quarter, including a switch swap, runway fashion shows, and styled photo sessions. Recently, it was the Fall Stitch Swap where clothing was donated, and women got to shop the donated clothing. All clothing that was not purchased was donated to charity. “It’s a WIN-WIN-WIN,” said Shipman. With a small staff of 3, Juniper James is still growing and has much in store for 2016. “All three ladies interned with me and not only have great style and skill, but are wonderful women who care about each client, and what we stand for
as a business of integrity,” said Shipman. While being a business owner is satisying, she loves being a mother and wife to husband Charles and daughter, Olive. And she admits that juggling the business with family life is simply “bananas.” “Working when she sleeps and when daddy is home is a crazy balancing act that rivals any Cirque de Soleil show,” she said. “But I work hard to play hard with her, and it’s totally worth it.” When she is not working, she enjoys some of her hobbies as a musician, artist and sewing. “I treasure my time with my girls, and the flexibility to spend my days learning alongside them,” she said. “At home we have our own garden and do regular concentrated music sessions as well as modifying yoga to do together.”
“I’m all about seeing potential, bringing things to life and celebrating the beauty that comes from that.” she explained. “They encouraged me to start a personal blog for my own writing, and soon I started posting not only my own writing, but my under-$10 secondhand outfits on my blog.” Shipman quickly realized she was on to something. No one had heard of a thrifted clothing blog six years ago, so people quickly resonated with the fashion and wallet-friendly skills 18

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT LOAVES & FISHES
Loaves & Fishes BY J. NALANI KAHAE
“The deep down root of who you are wants to give back,” says Sister Libby Fernandez, Executive Director of Loaves & Fishes. From humble beginnings in an abandoned Catholic worker house, the Sacramento-based organization has grown into a dearly loved daytime sanctuary for the local homeless community. Founders Dan and Chris Delany, started Loaves & Fishes as a dining house for the homeless back in 1983. To this day, the organization serves approximately 600 guests each day through their hot meal program. However, filling stomachs with needed sustenance is not where Loaves & Fishes stops helping. Over the past 30 years, the organization has expanded into a campus covering 5 acres. With this expansion, they have been able to launch different programs to service the varying needs of their guests.
22
Their Mustard Seed school provides a free private education for children ages 3 to 15-years-old. Maryhouse is a shelter specifically designed for women and children. Sister Nora’s Place is a long-term overnight shelter for women needing extended mental health services. While guests use the different provisions, they may also enjoy activities and use of restroom facilities within their private Friendship Park. The Wash House is, as the name suggests, a place where guests may come for hot showers and use laundry services throughout the week. The Genesis program offers a
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2015
“new beginning” where guests may seek free mental health services. Also available are the usage of the library, jail visitation program and animal emergency services. Loaves & Fishes was founded on a philosophy of building relationships with love, acceptance and respect. It is through these simple yet powerful characteristics that Loaves & Fishes has been able to garner the support needed to both fund and serve the community, advocating as “the voice for the voiceless.” Sister Libby says, “It’s fantastic when you actually interact and engage with homeless people. You’ll notice that homeless people are the first to help others.” As such, it is not uncommon for former homeless guests to come back and volunteer with Loaves & Fishes. Because there is such an effect of change, a large percentage of their employees began homeless and further down the line, came back as volunteers-turned-employees. Similarly, Sister Libby shared the warm sentiment of having former Mustard Seed students return specifically to express their thanks. There is a power in the simple invitation to help, "Sister Libby says. If people asked them to help, “how many people, no matter the level of income or status, how could you say no?” To connect with the El Dorado Hills Holy Trinity Parish group, please contact Hugh Purser at hpurser@sbcglobal.net. For more information, please visit sacloaves.org or email Sister Libby at srlibby@sacloaves.org.

TapSnap: THE “PHOTAINMENT” SYSTEM BY J. NALANI KAHAE
With constant technological advancements and the rise of social media popularity these days, TapSnap has provided an answer to many a dull party’s woe. It fuses photography and entertainment into a modernized spin on the retro photo booth concept. The difference between them, of course, is the lack of mall-grade console and the addition of branding features to increase any event’s exposure. Ryan Kidd, Sacramento Franchise Owner, explains, “To begin with, it’s just something new and different. It’s not your standard photo booth. It’s completely different and [people] love it!” So what exactly is it? Essentially, it is a kiosk where guests can have their picture taken and receive immediate prints; they can share their photo via social media and have digital prints emailed straight to them. This covers 24
the very basic tenants of the TapSnap “Photainment” System. From backdrop choices to logo placements and emoji-like stickers, the array of customizable features makes this ideal for, but not limited to, corporate events and parties. One such newer feature is Snapcast. This offers clients the ability to showcase a “carousel of photographs” being taken through the kiosk and provides a constant feed through any linked screen being used for the event. It also has the ability to track the media coverage with the event hashtags utilized via social networking sites such as Twitter and Instagram. They have also recently added an optional social photographer feature where a roaming photographer goes about the event taking pictures. This provides coverage within the event itself. When it comes to corporate parties,
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2015
Ryan admits the TapSnap addition will always add more to it relative to “how much is going on” as far as entertainment. “If it’s just a small dinner and drinks party, it’s going to add a big entertainment factor and they can walk away with a physical picture and remember the night rather than walking away and forgetting what they did. They’ll have a picture and will remember it.” As far as shopping around for entertainment and photography services, Ryan offers a warning to be wary of prices. “If it’s cheap, there’s a reason. You get what you pay for. If you want good service, good entertainment – excellent service, excellent entertainment, you have to look for it. And I feel like we accomplish that!”

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… to sell a house? There’s always that question whether or not you should keep your house on the market for the holidays. You figure that potential home buyers will be preoccupied with buying gifts, planning parties, cooking meals, and visiting relatives; the last thing on their mind is searching for and purchasing a new home, right? For this reason, many home sellers choose to temporarily remove their home from listing, then wait until the new year to re list. Before you hold off on listing your home until the new year, consider the benefits of listing your home for sale during the holidays, such as: Many home sellers either hold off from selling or take a break from selling during the holidays. Inevitably, the amount of listings on the market drop down, which means less competition for your home. With less competition, you could potentially sell your home faster, for more money. Once the market comes back up in the spring time, a lot of sellers will list their homes all at once for lower prices, which may drive the whole market down. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2015

Home buyers are generally the most motivated during the holiday season, greatly aiding sellers. Although there will be less buyers looking at homes this time of year, the buyers who do look are more serious about closing. While the traffic is down, the buyers who are out there — when it’s soggy and dark at 4:45 p.m. — they’re not just poking around for the fun of it. They’re wanting to buy a house. Looking back on statistics, interest rates tend to drop the most at the end of the year. If we look historically at interest rates, cyclically we have seen drops every December through January. While rates are now at all-time lows, we could dip even lower. Interest rates have to come up sometime, but it won’t be during the holidays. Many people purposely choose to purchase a home before the new year to receive a tax write off. Home buyers who close before the end of the year could be eligible for tax credits, such as deductions for home mortgage interest, real estate taxes, and PMI premiums. Large companies normally transfer employees in January. Those relocating usually need to buy a house right away and simply cannot wait.
In the winter months, homes typically show better. The decorations, smell of cookies baking, and a roaring fireplace all give your home a “warm and cozy” feeling. Just make sure you don’t cover up your homes best features with too much holiday decor. Stick to tasteful and simple decorations and learn proper staging techniques for the holidays. A lot of companies give their employees time off work for the holiday season, which means potential buyers have more time for showings. While all the malls and retail stores may be packed, Lenders and title companies are not as busy and can process loans faster. November and December are historically slower months in the mortgage business, so things get done faster too. Most become so consumed in buying gifts for their friends and family, that they completely overlook all the holiday sales and specials on home appliances and hardware. Remodeling,

decorating, appliance installation and other home services become more available and at less of a premium. Early spring is usually thought of as the best times to put a home on the market because buyer demand builds steadily through early summer. If you sell your home in the winter, you’ll have your pick of tons of houses for sale in the spring time. Just because it’s cold outside does not mean the whole housing market comes to a freeze during the holidays! Buyers.. start a new year in a new home! Be sure to contact your real estate today...This really could be a great time to Celebrate the Holiday and get your home on the market. FOR MORE INFORMATION: Featured home: 2001 Salmon Valley Ln. ST. GEORGE, UTAH
St. George, Utah BY DON AND ANN JACKSON
Gateway to Zion and Bryce National Parks and home to The World Senior Games and Red Mountain Resort
For some time we’ve wanted to visit St. George in southern Utah, long considered having the state’s best year round weather for outdoor activities and adventures. When our travel schedule finally cleared we chose to fly into Las Vegas, rent a car and then drive about 90 minutes through Arizona’s stunning Virgin River Gorge to reach this tourism mecca. And right from our arrival we were blown away by the town’s beautiful red mountains, cliffs and canyons providing the area stunning muted scarlet vistas 46
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2015
in almost every direction. Using St. George as our headquarters, we found even more gorgeous reddish hued natural surroundings by heading off to nearby Zion & Bryce Canyon National Parks, two of our top four personal favorite parks in the country. If you are short of time and don’t plan to do a lot of hiking or numerous other adventurous activities within either park, you can see both in one rather long day by leaving in early morning and returning before dark to St. George. A short 45 minute drive gets you first to nearby Zion.
Unlike the Grand Canyon, you can slowly drive through much of Zion’s canyons absorbing its breathtaking natural beauty at every turn and more than likely see a herd of endangered Big Horn Sheep grazing near the roads. Another ninety minute drive gets you to the smaller Bryce Canyon where you’ll be driving above the park around a series of awe-inspiring amphitheaters where numerous vista points will allow you to view much of this glorious park’s natural opulence below. The Grand Canyon, also in our top four
parks along with Yosemite, is also near Las Vegas & St. George and should be included on a separate day trip if time permits. In our eyes, the Grand Canyon’s south rim is a much better choice than the northern rim and its breathtaking majesty is mostly due to its massive size. Zion and Bryce, on the other hand with their countless visions of natural grandeur, surpass the Grand Canyon for those never ending Nikon moments. Each park should be on everyone’s bucket list. www.utahszionandbryce.com What To See And Do In St.George: Our favorite outing in the immediate area was a day spent in the beautiful Snow Canyon State Park, located in the 62,000 acre Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, originally established to protect the desert tortoise and their habitat. Thirty-eight miles of hiking trails, designated technical climbing locations, three miles of paved
biking paths and fifteen miles of equestrian trails await outdoor adventurists. As a state property, Snow Canyon’s sheer beauty of burnt orange, ruby and pinkish colored rock formations and canyons are almost equal to Zion and Bryce and actually surpass many of our other national parks when it comes to strikingly colorful environments. www.stateparks.utah.gov. Our next recommendation is to attend a show at the 2000 seat Tuacahn Amphitheater where world class Broadway type plays and musicals are performed in one of our country’s most resplendent outdoor theaters surrounded by 1500 foot high rusty shades of sandstone cliffs. An amazing theatrical experience. Folks who appreciate big game hunting exhibits should really enjoy Rosenbruch Wildlife Museum, one of the world’s finest displays of wildlife habitats with animal representations from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. www.rosenbruch.orgwww.tuacahn.org. MORE FIRST RATE ST.GEORGE HIGHLIGHTS: Pioneer Park provides more red rock hiking and great views of St.George below; the pristine white Mormon Temple, finished in 1877 was the first built in Utah and although not open to the public tours of the grounds are available; a historic red sandstone Mormon tabernacle built in 1863 welcomes visitors; free tours are offered at Brigham Young’s winter home built around 1863 and features a few of Young’s original furnishings. RED MOUNTAIN RESORT and SPA A WORLD CLASS RETREAT!
Readers might have noticed that we hadn’t yet recommended options for visitors to stay and dine in St. George as we’ve done for our past travel features. And that’s because we can only recommend one. Don’t get us wrong. We’re sure there are many fine locally owned lodging and restaurant choices as well as most of the national chains in St. George to meet any personal requirements or budgets. On the recommendation of others we booked into the multi-award winning Red Mountain Resort, the area’s premier lodging choice. ONE AWARD REALLY STANDS OUT: Travel & Leisure Magazine this year named it one of the World’s Top 10 Best Destination Spas! Most stays are referred to as Retreat Packages and include: choice of accommodations from deluxe rooms to villas; three healthy meals daily; unlimited fitness classes; daily guided morning hikes; healthy life classes; healthy cooking demos; and complimentary uses of bicycles, strength and cardio studios plus other amenities. When compared to similar five star spa retreats in California the rates appear to be much more reasonable. In lieu of the all-inclusive Retreat Packages, A La Carte rates without all the meals, classes, etc. are available on a very limited space available basis. Our one bedroom villa accommodations were beautifully appointed, very spacious and included two fireplaces, free wi-fi and two high definition T.V.’s. Our meals were very healthy and the activities we joined were very enjoyable. Sagestone, the resort’s upscale and chic spa offers most of the rejuvenation treatments expected at such a stylish getaway property. Red Mountain was a wonderful choice and experience. In addition to the many positive features mentioned earlier, the resort’s location set against stunning red cliffs and mountains is so enthralling that we could have stayed a month instead of our much shorter stay. WORLD SENIOR GAMES
LARGEST AND FINEST ANNUAL MULTI-SPORTS EVENT FOR ATHLETES OVER 50 IN THE WORLD! In 1987 the National Senior Games (AKA Senior Olympics) was first held in St. Louis and has become increasingly popular throughout the country with multiple events held each year in every state except one. The National Senior Games Association (NSGA), a nonprofit member of the United States Olympic Committee and the USOC’s Multi Sports Council, has continued to direct the prodigious growth of these senior sports events. This year was the first time Don (with Ann tagging along with tons of encouragement) has ever participated in this type of event by entering both the California and Nevada State Senior Championships plus St. George’s World Senior Games all of which are under the auspices of the NSGA. More than 10,000 male and female athlete participants show up every year in St. George entering over 200 separate singles, team, male and female events within 28 sports. Many of the events found in the more renowned international Summer Olympics for swimming, track and field are included. This annual St. George event began 28 years ago 48
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2015
and is now known as the Huntsman World Senior Games since securing a major name sponsorship with Huntsman Corporation-a large American multinational company. We think this St. George event has become the world’s largest annual multi-sports event for athletes over 50 because, in addition, to their deep pockets sponsor, they have a well-oiled administration and local volunteer network providing a professional approach to running this massive undertaking. In addition they provide a mind numbing amount of services and activities for attendees and community businesses and residents really embrace the event. When compared to other NSGA events, they are the only one that encourages athletes from numerous foreign countries to participate which adds a rare international flavor. They also make a concerted effort to make their event similar to the more famous Summer and Winter Olympics by producing special functions such as an Opening Ceremony event with a flag waving Parade of Athletes, an entertaining show, fireworks and torch lighting of the cauldron by a famous athlete-this year it was Rafer Johnson, a beloved winner of the decathlon in the 1960 Olympics. All these factors bode well for this event’s continued success. Hopefully this article might pique
the interest of any over 50 reader with an interest in participating in a sports activity of this type to check out these websites: www.worldseniorgames.net; www.nsga.com.
(Publishers note: Next month our travel team will bring our readers their insights on Kauai, Hawaii after a recent vacation on the relaxing Garden Island)

Milestone To describe it plainly Milestone is a restaurant built for our community. BY SAMETH KNIGHT | PHOTOS DAN HOOD
To describe it plainly; Milestone is a restaurant built for our community. “Every decision that we have made, every thought, every recipe has been carefully considered with our neighborhood in mind,” said one of the owners, Nick Dedier. Located in the heart of the community at El Dorado Hills Town Center, the restaurant is styled between the restaurants of the small districts that dot San Francisco and the more large scale restaurants that adorn the main street of downtown Napa. Two areas where the restaurant managers, chefs and owners strive to bring their best food, service and atmosphere daily. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2015

will be served between $4 and $7. The Milestone team assembled is anchored by Russell Okuibo and Nick Dedier from Aji Japanese Bistro along with the newest partner, Alexa Hazelton. Additionally, Mike Macaluso from Sacramento has been selected to lead the staff in the kitchen. “We have to admit that when we first opened Aji, we were stepping into the unknown. I took a while but once the community grabbed hold of Aji, we were immediately welcomed with open arms by this amazing community,” explained Dedier. This new style of restaurant focuses on simple food as well as great beverages and exceptional service. “Too often people feel that they have to sacrifice service and hospitality to find value. Yet we feel that every single cent that you spend in a restaurant should provide not only the best possible food, but the best possible attention and service from every member of our staff,” said Dedier. Be sure to save room for the fresh, warm chocolate chip cookies and cold milk for dessert. FOR MORE INFORMATION:
MILESTONE 4359 Town Center Blvd #116, El Dorado Hills (916) 934-0790, milestoneEDH.com
At first glance Milestone offers a cozy and warm atmosphere adorned by natural woods and rock created seamlessly with warm coppers and cool concrete. “The hope is that the first breath that is taken as you walk through the door is quickly exhaled as you grab your set at the open bar or back in the main dining room,” explained Dedier. The menu showcases simple dishes like baked potatoes, artisan cheese, cured meats, fried chicken, pot roast and a host of steaks and chops. The food is simply prepared, not plagued by fussiness and are designed to share. Basically these are the foods you grew up with (or wanted to grow up with) not necessarily “comfort food,” but foods that stroke your memory. Milestone embraces the concept that wine is designed to be an adventure and it is made to share. With glasses all 52
priced below $9 and every bottle priced between $30-$45, the restaurant promotes the idea of getting adventurous with your choices and highlighting the ability to order a second bottle to share. “We have met with winemakers, grape growers, enologists, and brokers with the express intent on bringing the best representation of every wine to your glass while maintaining the value that is inherent in the communal nature of wine,” said Dedier. Additionally there is a liter and a half liter program that promotes the freshest (not new) idea of keg wine on taps. There are also twelve beer taps. These taps are selected to provide a showcase for local brewers like Mraz and Amador Brewing along with other Sacramento favorites without emptying your wallet to sample and local fare. You’ll always be more successful dining out early (5pm5:30pm) or late (8pm-10pm) plus you’ll usually be able to take advantage of some great happy hour deals. #4 REMEMBER THE WORDS “FRIENDS & FAMILY”:
When you’re out you’re more than likely out with your friends and family. Whether it’s the holidays or not, most all of your dining experiences take place with your Friends and Family and the reason to be out is enjoying time together. #5 SERIOUSLY… IT’S ABOUT FAMILY.

HOLIDAYS BY NICK DEDIER
TIS THE SEASON:
#2 CHILL OUT:
(finish that sentiment however you like) However in the hospitality industry the two months between October and the New Year stare at us square in the face like back to back to back to back (etc) Mother’s Day brunches. Dining out in these uncertain times (the holidays) can be very competitive and filled with an intense anxiety that is in direct juxtaposition to the true meaning of the holidays. I implore you to read and follow the following bits of advice to make your holiday times a little more “merry and bright”
Not literally but figuratively and in the truest “Spicoli” sense. I know you have been driving in the rain, dealing with inside out umbrellas and trying to cross off the last name on your shopping list. You're cold, wet, tired and hungry, yet once you step into a restaurant or hotel, you have (hopefully) stepped into an oasis of just the opposite. Don’t let the hectic wilderness you have been traversing leak into your experience. Sit back and let the professionals work. It is their job to care for you entirely. Order a drink, take a breath, exhale and allow yourself to enjoy.
NICK DEDIER
#1 SMILE:
No matter how many of these advice pieces I write I will always begin with the advice to smile. More often than not, the service you receive is a direct reflection of the energy that you radiate. If you are positive, more often than not your service will be positive. 54
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2015
No matter what you do, it is about family. For me, I eat a prime rib at dad’s with our extended family on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Morning my mother and I go eat Chinese Food, see a movie and then usually indulge in some kind of fast food. These two experiences couldn’t be more opposite of one another yet they are equally enjoyable and satisfy my desire for tradition and adventure while surrounding myself with the love of family… It’s not about prime rib, presents or movies… It is ALL about family… (and excitedly this year I am fortunate enough to add a partner to my family) #6. DO SOMETHING FOR SOMEONE ELSE.
Donate your time and effort if you have it to give. Some great ideas are to adopt a family, or volunteer your time at a shelter or kitchen. One of the best things about the holidays is that the opportunities to participate in charity are abundant making it very easy to get out and DO something. Donate your time, your sanity and your energy to help make our community a better place and the holidays just a bit warmer for someone you don’t even know. There isn’t much more to say other than to remind everyone that this is the time of year where we should all realize just how lucky we are, how much we are loved, how much we are capable of loving and how much of an impact we can have on someone else, maybe someone you may not even know.

LAVA CAP Winery BY SERENA PIPER
Of all the wineries you know, how many of them are built on volcanic soil? The family of geologists who own Lava Cap Winery named it after the unique “lava cap” it is located on. The grapes get their vibrant flavor by being “warmed by the foothill sunshine and cooled by gentle Sierra night breezes. Family-owned by David and Jeanne Jones, Lava Cap Winery was established in 1986, after the first vines were planted just five years before. “Charlie’s father, David Jones, was a geologist that was searching for land to grow grapes in the early 1980’s,” owner Noreen Jones said. “He knew about soils and land formation and found our current location to be a perfect situation for vineyards.” The land the winery is located on was purchased after the Jones’ recognized the true potential behind planting vines on volcanic soil. According 56

to geologists, volcanic soil contains high levels of macro-porosity, which means the rocks contain large pores, allowing them to store water up to 100 percent of their weight. The water is also released very slowly, something invaluable to the roots of the wines and especially helpful when there is little to no rain for long periods of time. Grapes grown in volcanic soil tend to be riper and richer, including in minerality, and therefore are highly coveted. To ensure the health of customers and the land, more and more wineries are moving toward using sustainable winegrowing practices. For many winery owners, sustainability refers to not only environmental practices, but a wide range of philosophies as well. “It is about always trying to improve upon your practices, paying living wages, minimizing waste, utilizing natural pest control, and protecting the
soil and water through various processes in both the vineyards and the winery,” Jones said. Lava Cap is a certified Fish Friendly Farm, a program which recognizes farmers for implementing cultural practices that protect water quality for streams and rivers. From red wines to white wines, you can have your glass and enjoy it too out on the patio, a peaceful setting overlooking 50 acres of vineyards and the South Fork of the American River Canyon. Feel free to bring a picnic to enjoy with your favorite Lava Cap wine. As we move into 2016, the Jones’ look forward to celebrating Lava Cap’s 30th anniversary. “Knowing that people are enjoying our wines over a meal with friends and family, or in a picnic at the winery overlooking the vineyard is very gratifying,” said Jones. “It is very satisfying to be a part of a product that brings people together to enjoy the moment.” FOR MORE INFORMATION:

Upon closer examination of the product – specifically the wine bottles themselves – the subtle nuances combining their art and wine will become far more evident. This love is shown on every single bottle with its label featuring Dave’s artwork. In fact, adjacent to the tasting room is where visitors can find the barrel room where all the bottling, blending, fermentation and barrel aging take place. In summary, the d’Art Wines brand evokes an inviting sentimentality and warm-heartedness. This is clear not only through their story but also in their desire to connect with their customers in their tasting room; the picturesque grounds they open to their visitors and the events they organize for club members. This is a winery where one can expect effortless laughter while enjoying the company of friends both old and new. It is a place where art and wine collide into one beautifully crafted glass of red. d’Art Wines is open daily from 11am – 5pm. There is a $5 tasting fee per person. WINES BY J. NALANI KAHAE
There is a place along the outskirts of Lodi where winemakers believe laughter and wine go hand in hand. In true form, this is where the appropriately named Estate Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard makes its home. It is also here where family-owned d’Art Wines does all its crafting. With a brand name thoughtfully playing on their surname, owners Dave and Helen Dart have lent their talents to the careful fusion of both art and wine. Aside from their multi-award winning product, it is this culmination of artistry that truly earns a certain distinction for d’Art Wines. After one of the couple’s first homemade wines won Best of Show, the family decided to venture into the commercial wine making arena. D’Art Wines has gone on to continue winning multiple awards ever since. 58
Specializing in mainly red wine, d’Art Wines currently offers a Port, Zinfandel, Barbera, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Tamura Zinfandel, Dog Day Red, 2 different wine blends and some small lot wines exclusive to club members. While the wine is only available through their winery, Dave and Helen encourage visitors to come fully experience the d’Art Wines lifestyle they have created. Helen can typically be found in the tasting room offering insight into the special pairing relationships between wine and food. It is here that visitors can expect to be treated to the warmth and stimulation of taste, sight and sound. Taking quick stock of this same room, visitors will notice it also doubles as an art gallery. Showcased throughout the tasting room are Dave’s

Sweet Potatoes SEASON DELIGHT
When most of us think about which vegetable to have with our dinner each evening, we usually don’t consider sweet potatoes. They aren’t a vegetable we remember too often even if we do like them. And when we do remember them, we picture something orange resembling a potato with a little extra flavor. But sweet potatoes have a lot more to offer than just a flash of color to our dinner plate.

SEASON DELIGHT SWEET POTATOES
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2015
There are around 400 different varieties of sweet potato, but the kind we see most commonly in the United States is the orange sweet potato. They’re one of the most inexpensive ways to get a multitude of vitamins into our bodies, and they’re also wellknown for helping alleviate Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) around the holidays as they are high in Vitamin D, which many of us know comes from getting enough sunlight.
When shopping for them, look for medium or small sizes. They’ll be sweeter and have a more delicate flesh, which can help with cooking. Large sweet potatoes tend to be drier and starchier. Sweet potatoes might be most popular during the holidays, especially at Thanksgiving, but give them a second chance for daily meals and snacks.

FINAL THOUGHT
The Art of Gifting BY SERENA PIPER
When it comes to giving presents, there are two kinds of people: those who do really well with enjoying picking out the perfect gift, and those who dread it, agonizing over what the person’s tastes are and whether or not they should just give a gift card. The guidelines for gift giving are the same as ever: never leave a price tag attached, always wrap the item, attach a card for the utmost sincerity, and give without expectations. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when picking out something special for a friend, family member, or even coworker. 64
KEEP AN EAR (or Eye) OUT To make sure you don’t end up as the Agonizer, worrying about what kind of gift will please, there are a few tricks to keep up your sleeve as sources as to what they’ll like. First, pay attention to what they talk about: bird-watching, reading, seeing movies on weekends, etc. This will give you insight as to their taste. Secondly, pretty much everyone these days is on Pinterest, Amazon, or even Etsy, and with those websites comes wish lists. Make sure to follow whomever it is you’re shopping for. They’re basically a “This Is What to Get Me” list.
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2015
DON’T PROCRASTINATE Waiting until the last minute to do something is rarely ever a good idea. It almost always results in a backfire. So as soon as you have an idea of what to pick up, go do it. Don’t second guess yourself and wonder if there’s something better you could get. If you wait until the last minute to shop, whatever you pick out will seem forced and you’ll be wishing you had gone with your first idea. PLASTIC ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER Many of us get sucked into believing giving a gift card is exactly the kind of gift anyone would be happy with. And why not? The giftee can feel free to pick out whatever they want, leaving you blame-free of having chosen the wrong thing. But which would you rather receive: a gift card or a carefully chosen item you know the other person put a lot of thought into? Save the gift cards for when you’re desperate. THE PERSON WHO HAS EVERYTHING We all have that friend or acquaintance who has it all already. It’s one of the most baffling
questions: what do you give the person who has everything? The secret answer to this is to almost always find a charity or cause close to their heart and either make a donation in their name or buy something from that cause whose proceeds will go to support it. MATERIALS AREN’T EVERYTHING A common misconception when it comes to gift giving is that it has to be something materialistic, but don’t underestimate the power of an extra hand. An offer to help organize your boss’ office or babysit (uncompensated) for your friend who needs a date night with her husband holds just as much value. STICK TO YOUR BUDGET Before picking out a gift, put a cap on what you’re willing to spend, and then stick to it. Keep your eye out for deals and sales ahead of time, and if you’re shopping online, filter results by price so you aren’t tempted to spend more.
