ovember is truly one of my favorite months out of the year. The weather has officially cooled down and we can actually start talking about the holidays without all the weird looks! This is also the season of Thanksgiving, and with that in mind, I wanted to take the time to acknowledge my amazing family, team and circle of friends, near and far, whom I can rely on for anything. This year was full of unexpected surprises and I could not be more thankful to have them in my life. As we head into the rush of the holiday season, I hope we all take a few moments to realize what the true spirit of the season is all about and take the time to thank the ones in our lives that have made a difference.   This issue we featured five awesome, local restaurants where you can cozy up to a show stopping fireplace. One of my favorite memories is falling asleep after a great glass of wine on a ski trip with the fire crackling next to one of my closest friends. Here in our community, there are plenty of gorgeous spots to warm up to. Add a little romance with your significant other or fun to a girls night out with a little Winter Warmth. Also in this issue, our dear friends at Button Up Boutique dressed the gorgeous Tamica AtterberryScrivans with our Essential Transistional piece again. This month’s piece is a great layering piece from Michael Stars. A must have this season! Our Sip & Savor Opener is none other than the beautiful House of Oliver in Roseville. More than just a wine bar, their menu is full of fun, seasonal plates that will sure to leave you satisfied.   I also wanted to take a moment and thank everyone who was part of our 25th Issue Celebration last month. From the production of the amazing editorial spreads, to the execution of our fabulous party, there are so many to acknowledge. Our covers were a huge hit across town and throughout Sacramento. Our cover shoot was an extensive six day production. Our beauty team, Beela Shaikh along with her Henna Moods team; Sui Miguel Crusett of Salon Sui, traveled to each location and transformed our gorgeous models. They are truly gifted artists and we are so blessed to have them part of the Lavish family. Another huge thank you to Nar Bustamante and his awesome team for allowing us to shoot his incredible homes he designed and for hosting such an great party. Outfits were provided by Robin and Pete Bernadoni of Runway and Button Up Boutiques. Shasta Smith brought her own incredible motorcycle representing The Vintage Monkey. So many thanks to everyone involved for coordinating such a fun issue! Once again, thank you for your loyal readership and I look forward to seeing you all in December!

THE

Skin

Doctor EMME DIANE BY KELSEY WEHSELS

With an extensive knowledge on skincare, Emme Diane has become a savior to many experiencing skin problems, without knowing where to turn. “They normally come to me when they are fed up with their skin and they have tried everything,” she said.

Suffering from acne at an early, Emme Diane set out with an objective to discover the solution to her problem. “I remember that with my first allowance, I snuck off to the corner market to buy Noxema and Cover Girl foundation, I was on a mission to fix my skin!” she said. With these experiences, her career path seemed somewhat destined. “Growing up, friends would always ask my advice on how to help their skin, so in essence, I truly believe I was born to be an esthetician.” LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2015

LOL

Originally from Cupertino, Diane attended beauty school in San Francisco, before moving to Roseville on a whim, opening her business in September 2012. “I feel like Roseville chose me,” she said. “I decided it was time for me to start my own practice and develop my own protocols and products.” Offering a variety of services, Diane has a remedy for any skin problem including treatments such as LED photo rejuvenation treatment, various facial treatments that smooth coarsely textured skin, decrease pore size and reduce skin damage.

“I believe everyone deserves to not only love their skin, but feel comfortable in it every day!”   Her expertise in skincare reaches far beyond the bounds of Northern California, reaching places such as Australia, South Korea and Holland. “Quite literally, there are there are so many of clients whose skin I’ve never touched!” She explained. Clients typically find Diane on social media, where they reach out to her. After sending in photos of their problematic skin, clients arrange a consultation with Diane where they cover a range of topics to develop a home care regimen.    One of the biggest problems Diane is noticing? “Pore clogging ingredients in products on the market and misleading skin tips that are spreading like wildfire on social media,” she said. “This is the prime reason why I emphasize the importance of educating my clients about 14

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2015

their skin, so they can become an expert on their own skin.” In what she considers a selfish endeavor, Diane decided to launch her own skin care line in 2013. “When nothing was fixing my skin, I decided to do my own research and found most products had unnecessary fillers,” she said. “I decided to create my own line

with products for a broad range of issues including anti-aging and pigmentation.”    Becoming increasingly famous in the skincare industry, people are flocking to Diane to help save their skin. And her notoriety has made her extremely busy. When asked what her normal day consists of, she simply explains, “it’s crazy.” Although she leads an active lifestyle with hiking and traveling, Diane finds time to relax with her love, Kirk and her kittens, Mia and Baylor, usually binge-watching Netflix. Their show of choice? Scandal. “We’re obsessed,” she said with a laugh. On top of Diane’s many achievements, she has written an “Acne Bible” – a thorough reference guide on managing acne-prone skin. Typically only available to clients, Diane is making this handbook available to all of you. Simply email Emme (Emme@ emmediane.com), and mention Lavish Living Magazine to receive yours. Be sure to follow her on Facebook and Instagram, and check out her website. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT LILLIPUT CHILD SERVICES

BY KELSEY WEHSELS

Throughout California, over 30,000 children are removed from their homes each year due to abuse or neglect. In Northern California, one local charity is stepping up to provide these children with families they deserve. Lilliput Children’s Services is a non-profit agency that has completed more foster adoptions than any other private adoption agency, and is the leading kinship care provider in California.    They are on a mission to “exist to ensure every child has the opportunity to be part of a safe, nurturing and lifelong family.” Founded in 1980 by Bill Fuser, a social worker who worked with public child welfare for over a decade. He believed that a higher quality of service could be offered to foster children and families through a combined effort between the public and private sector. 22

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2015

In 1989, the agency became one of the state’s first foster family agencies to receive an adoption license, allowing to certify families for both foster care and adoption. Over 30 years later, Lilliput has developed into a leader in nonprofit child welfare. The organization received the Best of 2013 Award in January of 2014 and it was a 2015 finalist for Best Local Charity for KCRA 3 A-List Awards.    In addition to foster care and adoption services, Lilliput’s therapists provide counseling and support for foster, kinship and adopted individuals and their families including those adopted through foster care, domestic independent adoptions, and international adoptions. “I had the honor of serving on the Board of Directors of Lilliput for six years, and I saw from the insider’s view how uniquely dedicated the staff is to the children and

families they serve,” said former Board Member, Dr. Debra Moore.    To help raise funds, Lilliput is hosting a “Spare One for the Kids” bowl-a-thon. The event will include a t-shirt, all-you-can-eat-food and drinks, rental shoes, prizes and raffles.

THE FUNDRAISER WILL BE HELD AT COUNTRY CLUB LANES (2600 Watt Ave. in Sacramento) ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13 FROM 6-8:30PM. FOR MORE INFORMATION

DJ River's TIPS ON BOOKING A DJ BY LAUREN CLIFFORD

tricks and transitions which has now become his growing trademark sound. He is a Turntablist that specializes in the mixing and blending of all genres creating a “river-like” flow, not to mention he has played numerous top venues and events. Growing up with a father that traveled the world as a musician, it’s no wonder Bobby caught the music bug and developed this love over the years into a passionate affair with music that has now become a successful career.   First and foremost, Bobby aka DJ River suggests getting in contact with a DJ by reaching out. As he states, “word of mouth is always a great way to get a hold of a DJ for a potential booking. Put a post on social media asking if anyone has any referrals,” he said. Since social media has become a staple in most people lives, this seems like a simple and stress-free way to get into contact with a professional DJ during the busy holiday season.    Once you get into contact with one, he suggests that you inquire what types of events they normally do. This will give you a feel for the DJ and the types of crowds they normally perform for. He also strongly suggests that you check out their social media sites. If you’re looking to book a DJ for a family friendly party or a casual holiday party, their websites will show you if they are the appropriate fit. If all checks out, River suggests taking a look at their pricing and states, “I don’t know about you, but I’d rather pay a little bit more and be completely satisfied or have my expectations exceeded,” he explained.    DJ River also personally offers a service called “Skip the DJ,” which offers custom made mixes for all

One of the best ways to keep your guests entertained and ensure your party is a hit for the holidays is to hire a DJ. House to Yours FROM OUR

BY MATTHEW OLIVER, Owner & Partner @ House of Oliver

Fall is upon us and all around the leaves are changing, the air is crisp and you are getting ‘Pumpkin Spice Everything’ shoved in your face. What kind of wine goes good with a pumpkin spiced latte? How do you plan your wine selections properly for the coming autumn months?    It is important to understand that much like our palate changes for seasonal foods as the months shift, so does our desire for the proper wine. Two things are happening; you begin to desire wine that pairs well with the foods you are now enjoying and you also crave something that pairs well with your mood. There is nothing better than lighting some candles, setting the fireplace, grabbing your favorite blanket, throwing on “While You Were Sleeping” and cuddling on the couch with a nice bottle of Syrah, or maybe for you it’s a wonderful Cab or Merlot. But you get the idea.   Fall beckons us to the deep dark reds. The mysterious and sensual flavors of blackberry, currant and fig. The depth of smoky tobacco leaf and robust spices. The velvety texture of soft tannins. As an owner of House of Oliver wine lounge in Roseville, I do get asked the odd question. “Can you really pair wine 26

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2015

with pumpkin pie?” Or “what goes good with tomato soup?” Well, allow me to help fulfill your fall wine pairings.   Yes, you can pair wine with pumpkin pie. Try a dry Riesling like the one from Trefethen winery in Napa. Bright, white, crisp with nice acidity and minerality. Or you can go with a nice sparkling rosé like Schramsberg Mirabelle brut rosé from Napa. It is fresh and elegant with toasty aromas that linger on the palate. And how about tomato soup you say? Not a problem! You can have fun with a nice balanced Sauvignon Blanc like Emmolo, or if you want to have fun try a nice Merlot. One of my personal favorites is the Trinchero Family Merlot out of Napa. This wine is well balanced with a hint of pepper that goes great with tomato soup.    One of my favorite things about fall, is finding that perfect bottle on rainy days (Yes California, we will see rain again!) that pairs well with a good book and a warm fire. For that perfect bottle it doesn’t have to be a big name brand, who am I really trying to impress? It doesn’t have to be soft and velvety, I do not need a food wine. So what am I looking for? If it is white, I want it to be big and buttery. Nothing warms you on a chilled, rainy day like a buttery chardonnay. I know, you are all thinking Rombauer, and I am okay with that. But for me, I like to expand my horizons, so how about the Hartford Court Chardonnay. That same buttery yumminess but with some well-balanced acid that cuts through giving it the perfect mouth feel and warming you up.    Personally, what I am really looking for, on those romantic rainy days is a nice, big, red. A bottle that comes, knife and fork included. Robust tannins and big fruit. Vines that are over 100 years old and give you that ancient flavor of hearty roots. One such bottle, the Tridente Tempranillo from the Juan Gil family, Bodegas Triton Winery in Spain. As a Tempranillo, this wine is dark and seductive with intense black

fruit and toasty oak. You can taste the smoky depth of rich fruity flavors wrapped up nicely in fig leaf on a plate of slate leaving a long lasting finish. A bottle this good makes you wish for more rainy days. No matter where you find yourself this autumn season get out and risk more.    Try something new in the world of wines and experience the fun of fall pairings, you will be happy that you did. Till next time, drink great wine with great people and always stay classy. Cheers!

7 ESSENTIAL THINGS EVERY NEW HOMEOWNER NEEDS! Great information offered by Jaymi Naciri on Realty Times

LO L

Becoming a homebuyer is exciting. But now that it’s happening, you’ll need a few things to get you from buyer to owner. You may think you only need the stamina to unpack, but that’s only the beginning. 1. A BASIC TOOLKIT You don’t want to be sitting at home without a wrench when your sink is leaking. Or without a Phillips screwdriver when nothing in the house will accept a flathead. Tools may seem like a boring thing to spend your money on, especially if money is tight after your down payment, closing costs, and moving costs, but spending a few bucks on a decent kit will save you the heartache of having to run out in the middle of the night to buy pliers. Lowe’s is a great place to look for pre-assembled toolkits if you don’t want to buy individual pieces. They range up to several hundred dollars depending on how professional and comprehensive they are, but you can get away with spending as little as $20 or $30 for a BASIC TOOL KIT. Check out HOUZZ.COM for their list of the 20 tools homeowners need. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2015

29

2. A DIY (Do It Yourself) SPIRIT You’re going to be testing the limits of your DIY skills as a homeowner... a lot. Painting your walls, fixing a clogged drain, pulling up old floors, laying tile - they can all expand your skills, teach you new things, and provide a real sense of pride and accomplishment. “Check out tutorials and how-to guides on sites like The FAMILY HANDYMAN and THIS OLD HOUSE - good, reputable sources for home improvement information,” said LIFEHACKER. “Cross reference anything you find with multiple sources though, just to make sure you’re getting good information.” Keep in mind that experts generally recommend you leave things like plumbing and electrical to the experts so you don’t flood your home or electrocute yourself. 3. A BISSELL SPOTBOT The Bissell SpotBot is a deep-cleaning mini carpet cleaner and one of our favorite tools for getting spots out - everything from coffee spills to blood to pet stains (especially pet stains!) Better yet, it’s the perfect lazy man’s tool. All you do is put it on top of the stain, turn it on, and it does all the work for you. 4. DEEP POCKETS Things are going to break. Make sure you have a stash of cash for when that happens. The only thing worse than experiencing repair issues, is having no money to take care of the problem. Liz Weston of MSN.com asked several experts about budgeting for home repairs. “The experts said you should expect to spend at least 1% of your home’s value per year on maintenance and repair, and to plan for more if your home is older or has been poorly maintained. On a $300,000 house, that’s $3,000 per year. Put $250 a month aside for these expenses and save yourself a lot of grief when a repair arises.” 5. A HOME WARRANTY, IF ONE IS AVAILABLE A home warranty can help with those large expenses. “Like all warranties, a home warranty is supposed to protect against expensive, unforeseen repair bills and provide peace of mind,” said Investopedia. “For a homeowner who doesn’t have an emergency fund or who wants to protect their emergency fund, a home warranty can act as a buffer. Home warranties also make sense for people who aren’t handy or who don’t want to worry about tracking down a contractor when they have a problem. Warranties can also make sense for people with expensive taste in appliances.” Keep in mind that a warranty won’t cover everything, and is not only for brand-new residences; warranties may also be available for older homes. 6. AN INTEREST-FREE HOME DEPOT CARD You know what would look great in your kitchen? Granite countertops! Or new stainless steel appliances. One of the best things we ever did is get a credit card from Home Depot

30

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2015

to spread out our payments and pay back the balance without interest, saving us the $5,000 one-time output. NOTE: the interest-free deal is not offered all the time, and also that we prefer the Home Depot card over Lowe’s similar card because Lowe’s typically maxes out their interest-free payment period at 18 months, while Home Depot has 24-month terms. 7. ON-TIME PAYMENTS Maintaining your credit is just as important after you buy as it is before. If you want that interest-free Home Depot card, you’re going to need the credit to warrant it. Buying a new car or refinancing your mortgage will also depend on a good score. The great news is that your score should improve once your new mortgage is reported to the Credit Bureaus. Now it’s up to you to keep it up! FOR MORE INFORMATION: Featured home: 4693 Carmen, El Dorado Hills, CA

Warmth FIRESIDE FESTIVITY

With the cooler temperatures descending upon us, it can be difficult to go out and enjoy the nightlife. If keeping warm is the problem, several local hot spots found the solution with their fire places and fire pits. From elaborate, grand indoor fireplaces to modern and unique outdoor fire pits, these places will be sure to keep you warm this winter.

La Provence Restaurant & Terrace   Situated amongst rolling hills in beautiful Roseville, La Provence Restaurant & Terrace offers great views, savory dishes, and most importantly a warm atmosphere. Located in the middle of the restaurant sits a large fire place, visible by all.   With large, vast windows, patrons are able to experience the outdoors while remaining inside. “Even on the rainy, stormy days, it’s nice, warm, and cozy in here,” said Jenny Birnschein, Special Events Manager at La Provence. Paul Ottaviano, former operation manager and partner shares Birnschein’s opinion.   “It’s nice to be able to enjoy the fireplace while looking out the window and watching the rain,” he said. “Also, it is such a wonderful place to have your wedding with the fireplace as your backdrop,” he added. BRANSON, WHERE FAMILY FRIENDLY FUN FLOURISHES

We’d heard lots of very interesting stories and facts about Branson that led to our decision to visit this quite famous destination just a few months ago. This little city in the foothills of Ozark Mountain country claims to have more theater seats than New York’s Broadway and more live shows than Las Vegas. And this all takes place within an atmosphere of no casinos or gambling, zero neon lighted X-rated shows and very few traffic problems. Just clean family entertainment, beautiful scenery and reasonable prices are awaiting visitors to this self-titled Live Music Capital of America. If this information happens to match your idea of what a family vacation needs to be-and frankly what’s not to like-why wait? After reading this article check out www.explorebranson.com, www.explorebranson.com, for complete info on all things Branson. 42

WHAT TO SEE AND DO:

Let’s start with Silver Dollar City, one of middle America’s most fun-filled and unusual amusement parks. Our foremost memory starts right at the park entrance where you have the option of taking the tour down into massive Marvel Cave (Missouri’s deepest) to explore its’ haunting depths. And the genuine friendliness we encountered with all the staff as we strolled the park is another indelible part of our memory bank. When you add in record breaking rollercoasters, rides for every level of thrill tolerance, a premier waterpark, live shows/ entertainment (of course), craft shops, good country eats, special events and much MORE, you have a five star family experience. Your kids will be in heaven and your wallets won’t be emptied. www. silverdollarcity.com, www.silverdollarcity.com.   Titanic, touted as the World’s Largest Museum Attraction, gave us little reason to visit except the desire to find out why in the world it ended up in Branson. Our mistake! We’ve been to the Titanic Museum in Cobh, Ireland, the last port before the Titanic sank, and this Branson Titantic Museum really blows the Irish version out of the water. No pun intended. Adults may appreciate it more than young children but it’s definitely educational for all. www.titanticbranson.com, www.titanticbranson. com Branson’s Scenic Railway and their Ozark Zephyr train with classic restored passenger cars explores territory offering views unattainable by car or any other transportation. The whole train experience, as well as checking out their 1905 train depot, is a trip into yesteryear. www.bransontrain.com, www. bransontrain.com. Showboat Branson Belle is billed as America’s most entertaining dinner cruise and it comes close to living up to the hype with views of Table Rock Lake, the Ozark Mountains, good vittles, and a quality variety show featuring young talent. www.showboatbransonbelle.com, www. showboatbransonbelle.com. Ride The Ducks in their colorful amphibious vehicles is a great way to tour

the Branson area on both land and into Table Rock Lake. Kids from 5 to 95 will enjoy the humor, the quacking involvement and a chance to ‘drive the duck’ on water. www.bransonducks.com, www. bransonducks.com. Shows: Branson is admittedly best known for their numerous country western shows and ongoing visits from famous entertainers. In recent years the shows have become much more diversified. During most visits you’ll probably have the opportunity to see a show in practically all these entertainment genres: musical reviews featuring rock and roll, blues, bluegrass, gospel, pop, soul, folk, jazz, classical and more; dance reviews; famous star cover tributes; acrobatics; comedy; magicians/illusionists; ventriloquists; hypnotists; variety reviews; and animal shows….well, you get the picture as there’s something for everyone. Two standouts: If you’d like a religious theme with

a Broadway quality production relating to the lives of such biblical luminaries as Jonah, Moses or Noah don’t miss Sight and Sound Theatre. www.sight-sound.com, www.sight-sound.com. Into animal or horse shows? You might want to check out Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede claiming to be the world’s most visited dinner attraction. And who are we to argue with Dolly and an arena full of spectacular riders, beautiful horses and rousing musical numbers adding up to a vision of ultimate showmanship. www. dixiestampede.com, www.dixiestampede.com. More Recommended Activities: For the adventurous souls you’ll not be disappointed with this list of possibilities: zip-lining and canopy tours; kayaking; hot air ballooning; waterskiing; inner-tubing; canoeing; and spelunking. Whew! For the more typical vacation activities consider these: championship golf courses; fabulous fishing options; an IMAX Theater; wine tasting; mini-golf; zoo type facilities; boat rentals; and strolling historic downtown (don’t miss the

unbelievable Dick’s Old-Time Five & Dime). And if thoughts of shopping come up you should definitely consider Branson Landing, Tanger Outlets and Grand Village Shops to satisfy those buying urges.

WHERE TO STAY AND DINE:

During our recent visit we stayed at the upscale Hilton at Branson Landing, overlooking daily water fountain shows and Lake Taneycomo. This boutique style hotel features a fitness center, pool and delightful accommodations. For the best steak dinner in Branson be sure to head across the street to Level 2 Steakhouse in the Hilton’s sister hotel property at the Convention Center. www. hiltonsofbranson.com, www.hiltonsofbranson.com, level2steakhouse.com, level2steakhouse.com. Another superb lodging choice is the Mabee Lodge in the stunning Keeter Center on the College of the Ozarks campus where the elegantly appointed rooms include a fireplace, microwave, balcony overlooking the campus and a fridge. Their Dobyn’s Dining Room and Bakery will far surpass your expectations for any meal, dessert or baked goods, especially when you find out the culinary staff comprises mostly students. Not only is the Lodge & Keeter Center also smoothly operated by their students, it was almost unbelievably, built by the students. www.keetercenter.edu, www.keetercenter.edu. One of our favorite lunches was at Mel’s Hard Luck Diner where the 50’s era decor and great grub were equal to the talented singing server’s renditions of song favorites. www.melshardluckdiner.com, www.melshardluckdiner.com.

BOTTOM LINE:

When it comes to lodging you’ll find there is everything from camping and R.V parks to ultimate resorts to B & B’s to modest motels and standard hotels to fit any budget. This also holds true for restaurants as you’ll find everything from fine gourmet dining to most every medium priced chain and fast food outlet known to man. One other Branson hallmark: At every show and event we attended there was a special moment when all U.S. military veterans were asked to stand and be recognized. We’ve never felt such ongoing appreciation for our own Navy and Army careers. Patriotism absolutely reigns supreme in Branson. So once again we’d like to remind you to go to www.explorebranson.com, www.explorebranson. com, to check out all the lodging, dining, attractions, and event offerings available in this wonderful family friendly city. (Publisher’s note: next month our travel team will bring our readers their wonderful experiences on a recent trip to St. George, Utah- the Gateway to the beautiful Zion & Bryce National Parks- where they stayed at the fabulous Red Mountain Resort and Spa. House of Oliver

S I P & S AV O R

When most people picture a wine bar, they see a dimly-lit dining area where wine connoisseurs might gather to converse about their favorite and upcoming bottles. Some of us shy away from places like these, mistaking them as territory off-limits for those of us who don’t really know anything about wine. On the contrary, wine bars welcome people of all backgrounds, connoisseurs and amateurs alike.    House of Oliver in Roseville is one such wine bar. Established in 2014, it’s a little over a year old, but already has a loyal and steady fan base. The owners, Kyle and Matthew Oliver, call House of Oliver their “bucket list item and dream come true.”

S I P & S AV O R “We call it ‘House’ of Oliver for a good reason,” owner Kyle Oliver said, adding they like to keep things fun, interactive, and entertaining, while also welcoming and relaxing.   “The most important thing isn’t the wine, it’s the community,” Kyle Oliver said. “It’s about celebrating this brilliant community every day… wine, beer and delicious food helps us do that. It’s really an incredible privilege for us and a big reason, as owners, we love being involved daily.” They offer an extensive wine list by the glass or bottle and a comfortable, inviting atmosphere to sample them all in. Come to find a new favorite, or just to get started in the wine world. Artisan meats, cheese boards, and a tapas menu are available to accompany your glass.

Peach bruschetta, salads rib sliders, but brie, and mac and cheese are just a few of the options for bites to eat. From there, look through their list of 30 wines by glass - 60 by bottle including all the usuals, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, red, etc. Brought a friend who isn’t into wine? There are 12 rotating beers including pilsners, lagers, wheat beer, blondes, pale ale, IPA, double IPA, and a porte.    With a wine list that changes every 2-3 months, House of Oliver offers something for everyone, encouraging patrons to sample different wines they wouldn’t normally try. “We offer flight tasting regularly,” said Matthew Oliver. “Which gives people a chance to experience something they haven’t yet tried.” As if expert wine recommenders and a mouthwatering menu weren’t enough, House of Oliver also has live jazz music Friday and Saturday nights. Additionally, if you’re one of their wine club members, weekly events such as winemakers and sommelier visits, wine and food pairings and more, are something to look forward to. House of Oliver also caters to corporate and charity events.    If you’re on a budget, look for deals, such as Tuesdays when wine by the glass is $10 or less. Happy Hour is

DINING OUT WITH NICK

DINING OUT

Nick

with BY NICK DEDIER

SNAPBACK

As a restaurant owner it is one of my many duties to stay informed of the trends in the food industry. This includes not only upcoming trends (which are important) but also trends that are passing, have passed and are long since dead (which is more important). As a guest in a restaurant it is important to learn to move past dead trends as well as, often times, trends come with a price.   The first, hopefully dying, trend that will most certainly find the readers twisting their face in confusion over is “bacon.” Seriously, hear me out. Bacon is certainly delicious; if I NICK DEDIER could eat it every day I would. Last year I ate at a roadside restaurant in Napa for breakfast and found a strip of bacon hanging in my Bloody Mary. The bacon was chilly and soggy, the fat was cold and slimy and I’m not sure how many people enjoy congealed bacon fat in their beverages, but it certainly is not this guy. This was the point where I thought to myself, enough is enough “how much is too 50

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2015

much?” And think about it. Cooking bacon perfectly takes a lot longer than that poor little diver scallop that has just been hammered to death because someone decided to wrap it in bacon. The point is that this salty, sweet, smoky, cured delicacy is amazing when it is used sparingly it used to be a guilty pleasure that added depth and balance. However lately this beautiful slice of heaven has turned into the “bull in a china shop” of the food world. Often times it is used liberally and can cover up or hide the skill necessary in cooking and menu development. Hell, when first I graduated from culinary school I wanted to toss bacon in everything. For ladies, you’ll know that when you’re dressing to go out, you never chose a low cut top and a short skirt, a little restraint goes a long way. The same is true for bacon.   The second, and certainly a hot button here in Sacramento, is the term “farm to fork.” Just as the term “organic” lost some of its tread as the years went on and the lines became fuzzier, the term “Farm to Fork” is starting to lose its meaning as well. The other day, while watching the British Open, I saw a Lays potato chip commercial that said their ingredients were “farm grown” and I thought to myself “well of course, they are, they are vegetables.” Once the mainstream media picks up a food trend to convince the

public that their product is “quality,” you should avoid it. At the end of the day a restaurant should not have to convince you that what they are buying is from an actual farm. They should be using the right ingredients without slapping a logo on it and charging more for “farm to fork” activities.   The third focuses on the bar. Mojitos. Stop ordering mojitos! 15 years ago, when you walked into a bar and ordered this cocktail from the bartender, your friends would look at you like you had just discovered the philosopher’s stone and the bartender would look at you like you were the one who was on the cutting edge of what was happening in the cocktail scene. Back then, when I was “that bartender” at Applebee’s, it is what I would serve people who wanted something... “different” That was 15 years ago when your current bartender was probably 7 years old. Times have changed, the cocktail world has blossomed, cocktails have gotten exciting and bartenders now see the mojito order like it’s the kiss of death to their beautiful bar stocked with bitters, sodas, fresh fruit and one lonely glass of mint. At least chop 510 years off of the drink and order a Moscow mule (but skip the copper mug).   The fourth and last trend that I see literally everywhere is “seared Ahi tuna.” At Aji I know the pain, struggle and expense we endure to get the freshest fish on the planet and the frozen fish in your “Aji tuna sliders” do not fit into that category. Using “seared Ahi” was a trend back when an avocado on your sandwich made it “Monterey” style. If you are going to eat Ahi tuna, anywhere outside of a good Japanese restaurant, then make sure it’s at least tartare or poke style, fresh and raw. The point here is that trends come and go. Trends are fun and exciting especially when you’re trying new styles and flavors, but once the wave of a trend turns into a tsunami and fast food chains and snack products start picking up on them to make a quick buck, you can bet it’s only a matter of time before cold bacon ends up in your Bloody Mary or your picking muddled mint out of your teeth in the bathroom from that last mojito. Most importantly, however, you should stick to quality and skill. Quality will never be a trend, it will always deliver value and you’ll always find yourself satisfied with a great meal in a great spot.

SINGLE LEAF

Vineyards

&

BY LAUREN CLIFFORD

The perfect time for a glass of wine is here, as it is Harvest time at most wineries. But at Single Leaf Vineyards and Winery, they make it clear that anytime is the perfect time for wine as they make “wine for all seasons.” Originally planted in 1981, Scott and Pam Miller purchased the Zinfandel vineyard in 1988 and started developing what we know today as the prosperous Single Leaf Vineyard and Winery. Slowly but surely, Scott and Pam planted a more diverse variety of grapes including; Merlot, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah to name a few. The winery was completed and open to the public with a delectable variety of handcrafted estate-grown wines by 1993. Single Leaf prides itself on being a small, family owned and operated winery in which the quality of their grapes and wine along with their connection with their customers remains their top priorities. They believe the secret to great wine starts in the 52

vineyards, so it is no surprise that they ensure great quality by using a traditional hands on style when it comes to winemaking. Since Scott has extensive knowledge is the field of fermentation science and was particularly fascinated with winemaking, it only makes sense that he opened a winery to explore his love of wine with his wife Pam. Together, they discovered that they have a sweet spot for California Zinfandels, which explains their reputation for producing some of the most unique Zinfandels every year.   Interestingly enough, they use a vineyard technique known as “dry farming” where the source of water for the vines comes directly from the nature that surrounds them. They also harvest their grapes by hand when the color is deemed optimal, then they crush the grapes within hours of picking and age them in oak barrels for twenty to twenty-four months. Both of these techniques lead

to wines that are vibrant and intense with flavors that range from citrus flavored, sweet and complex, and rich full bodied wines with cherry and oak notes. Single Leaf’s traditional winemaking style has proved to be top notch as they have produced award winning Zinfandels, Ports and Chardonnays just to mention a few. Scott and Pam Miller have an honest approach to their winemaking process since they craft almost all Estate wines. This means that they have great control over every process that goes into making their wines, which ensures that their wines are of great quality and flavor. They also strive to maintain a consistent richness and earthiness every year when it comes to their wines which is refreshing. Not to mention that that they also use a range of fermentation yeasts that bring us the spicy and bold notes that a number of their wines are known for. Scott considers his style as “big fruit, robust flavors,” and he has the award winning wine to prove it. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

WINE PICKS | LODI

LO C AL LO D I WI NES THIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL LODI WINERIES.

St. Amant reflects the history of the land upon which it lies, which results in a vintage feel and not the usual winery experience. After all, the land was once an old industrial winery, and the family kept it as authentic as they could. At St. Amant you will get an intimate experience in which you will witness the quality of their handcrafted wines that are all produced on site. The wines are made in small lots and the grapes are all hand harvested and sorted in the vineyard which results in high quality. St. Amant is all about the wine and the process in which it takes to produce the highest quality of grapes, so be prepared for the “real” experience. The wines are a direct reflection of the area in which the grapes grow and the season in which they grow in, which results in a natural and real flavor. Sadly, the pioneer of the winery Tim, passed away in 2006 after a long time battle with Lymphoma. He is remembered not only for the wonderful wines in which he produced alongside his wife Barbara, but for his even more wonderful personality. Fortunately his son Stuart Spencer was able to take over as the winemaker for St. Amant and apply his knowledge and many years of working side by side with his father in the vineyards and cellars. The delicious and handcrafted wines continue to prosper as does the authentically beautiful St. Amant Winery.

ST. AMANT Winery BY LAUREN CLIFFORD

St. Amant Winery consists of forty-three acres of lush land that lie in the beautiful Jackson Valley on the Western Side of Amador County, with spectacular views of the natural landscapes that surround it. The name “St. Amant” stems from co-founder Barbara Spencer’s mother’s maiden name. Together, Barbara helped her husband, founder and winemaker Tim Spencer, open St. Amant vineyards in the early 1970’s. Once known as The Old Guild Winery; a post-prohibition era winery built in the late 1930’s, the happy couple set up shop and made the vineyard their own. Thus St. Amant winery was born and Tim got the chance to pursue his love for creating high quality wines at a time when there was a huge lack of local Lodi labeled wines being produced. By 1972 the happy couple had already planted their first thirty acres of Zinfandel on the land and even began 54

selling their own grapes to other wineries. An entrepreneur at heart, Tim who was born and raised on a dairy took his farming skills to the next level and planted a variety of Portuguese grapes which heartedly ripened in 1981. The variety of grapes that their vineyards produced were fairly unheard of at the time in California, giving this winery an edge. St. Amant is definitely a family owned and operated business as from the start the family grew and sold their own grapes, marketed their wine across the country, and controlled the whole process of production from crushing to bottling. After their Zinfandel became a favorite with the public, they focused on their specialty consisting of Portuguese varieties such as; White Verdelho, Spanish Tempranillo and Souzao, which were all unique to the area. They are also known for producing a variety of sensual Ports as well.

SEASON DELIGHT SPINACH

Spinach

BY SERENA PIPER

SEASON DELIGHT

We hated it when our mothers told us to eat our vegetables when we were younger, but most of us grew up to love the ones we hated anyway, so it all worked out, right? And if you still don’t like spinach, there are plenty of reasons and ways to work it into what you already eat on a weekly basis. Firstly, spinach is high in practically every vitamin and nutrient out there, most notably Vitamin K (es56

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2015

sential to building strong bones and preventing heart disease) and fiber (which helps food pass through the digestive system). So while we all watched Popeye make himself mega strong with his spinach habit, we didn’t know he was also doing his body many more benefits invisible to the eye.   Although it can be difficult to work a certain vegetable into our diet because our children may

not love it - to them, taste matters more than health benefits - there are ways to get them to eat their vegetables besides bribing them with a delicious dessert. There are many recipes out there too good for even them to pass up. And if you’re kidless, they’re adult-friendly too.

ETIQUETTE

FINAL THOUGHT

Hosting aHoliday Party BY LAUREN CLIFFORD

The days are getting shorter, the nights longer, and with this winter brings its beautiful chill. This is the time of year for elegant festivities to commence and for friends and family to gather and celebrate the joy and unity that the Holiday season brings. With this however, comes the added pressure and stress of hosting as well as attending all of these wonderful holiday parties. Here are some tips and ideas to keep you well-balanced during this 60

bustling season and ensure your next holiday party is merry and bright. INVITE RIGHT: One way to make sure your holiday party is a success is to make sure you have guests. To make it clear you are in fact throwing a fabulous party, send out invitations early and be very clear on all of the information. Yes, this means you need to narrow down a date, time,

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2015

and even rethink the guest list. Also, don’t forget to include those handy dandy RSVPs. PLAN, PLAN, PLAN Time to get everything ready and prepped. To ensure everything is indeed merry, make sure you have everything you need for the party. This means a tidy home, food and beverages, and perhaps festive decorations. Being prepared will help you relax before your guests arrive and also allow time for you to get dressed and party ready. BE WELCOMING: Now is the time to put your charm to good use. Make sure to greet all of your guests in a warm and friendly manner, and make them feel welcomed the entire time. Have a good chat with everyone and make sure glasses are always filled. It’s your time to shine, so be engaged and show them what your holiday parties are all about. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED: So your appetizers didn’t come out

as planned, or one of your guest brought two others, no need to panic. Being the polite and awesome host you are, have a backup option for the menu that you can easily incorporate. And if there happens to be an extra guest or two, be flexible and accommodate as best as you can. ENJOY YOUR MOMENT: Pour yourself a glass or grab yourself a plate and enjoy the company of the friends and family that surround you. After all, it’s the holidays and you earned it. Also, be sure to thank all of your guests at the end of the night. LASTLY, A NOTE TO GUESTS: Being a good guest is pretty much all that a host asks for. Be sure to arrive on time, be gracious, offer to help with anything, engage others, and always thank your host for including you in a fabulous affair.
