ctober is one of my favorite months out of the entire year. It's sweater weather and pumpkin spiced everything! The cooler weather is always a great welcoming, which means one more day closer to winter and the ski season. More importantly, this month marks our 25th Issue Anniversary. Before I started Lavish, I worked at another publication in the Central Valley and remember planning and executing their 100th issue celebration. I remember thinking how incredible that milestone was, especially starting up my own publication. To think we are a quarter of the way there, absolutely baffles me. The past couple of years have been such a whirlwind. It truly feels like yesterday that we started this venture. I will always be grateful to all those who stuck by my side and never doubted this dream. Although today is much different than 25 issues ago, I am extremely blessed to have an amazing circle of friends, family, clients, readers and supporters around me and this special publication. This issue highlights our annual Home and Design special edition. We sought out the designs of the amazing Nar Bustamante, owner of Nar Fine Carpentry. We photographed some of his incredible kitchens and incorporated our fall fashion into this eye catching spread. Nar went above and beyond helping coordinate this extensive shoot, and we are so thrilled with the final product. Also, a huge thank you to our friends at Button Up Boutique for providing the looks again this month. Read on to find all their pieces throughout the entire issue. This is also is our Women's Wellness issue where we highlighted various health topics for women of every age. Take a peek at this feature for the latest products and recommendations from our in-house beauty editor. Once again, thank you for your loyal readership. See you all in November, and here's to 25 more!

Owned by husband and wife duo, Bob Ammirato and Valerie Valentine, Design Galleria by Valentine offers services ranging from floor and window coverings to exclusive bedding designs and fine furnishings. Valerie knew at 5 years old she wanted to have a career in design. She was drafting by 14 years old, and by 16, she had enrolled at Bauder College in Sacramento. After graduation, she went to work at Macy’s as a junior executive department manager for the furniture, rugs and design department. It was there that she met her husband, a San Francisco rug buyer who traveled with the Macy’s team. They were wed in 1985, and have been happily married since. “I am most proud of the way my husband and I have been able to work together all day long and still have our time after work,” she explained. After meeting at Macy’s, the two then worked together at Western Contract in the home division. He, as a sales director, and she as the design director. Finding their passion for the retail and design industries, the two decided to open their own business together. Founded in 2001, their business now boasts a design team of nine and additional support staff of seven. When asked about the decision of their location, Valentine commented that it was their “vision for the store.” Valerie first stumbled upon the location when she was in real estate showing model homes. The location having been vacant for a couple of years, the couple decided it was the perfect location for their showroom. Valentine, who draws her inspiration from magazines and websites, is constantly studying her field. “I do research every day,” she said. “I always try
to find something new.” She has a range of expertise and specializes in interior design services, lighting and art, exclusive bedding design, custom window coverings and space planning, among many more talents. Knowing that most like other industries design trends come and go, Valentine does her best to stay ahead of the game by attending various shows and conferences around the country. “I try to design with new energy and different ideas and bring it to Sacramento,” she said. “Keeping ahead of the game is a must,” she added. “Designers have to know what trends will be coming out so they can design long-term.” Her work has been noticed, winning several community showcases, awards and recognitions including 1996 ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Design Excellence Gold Award, 2005 Granite Bay Home Tour and 2008 KCRA Concept Home, just to name a few. When Valentine isn’t working, she’s at her grandparents’ ranch in Stockton, Alpine Boarding Stables, which currently has 15 horses. “I absolutely love animals,” she said. “When I’m not designing, I love to be working with animals.” During the weekends, about 15-20 children flock to the ranch to ride the horses. Hearing Valentine describe the ranch, you can tell it is her passion. “I love going there because it is just so beautiful
“My favorite part of my job is seeing that smile on my client’s face. It makes me so happy.”

and green,” she explained. “We have our own irrigation so everything is green and it has such beautiful cherry and walnut orchards.” Meanwhile, Design Galleria continues to grow and expand. “We are always working hard to find the best products for the best price,” said Valentine. “I have so many active clients that I initially worked with years ago. Long term relationships are so important to me.”

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT ALL ABOUT EQUINE
BY SERENA PIPER
All around the world animal abuse and neglect continues to be a problem. In the United States, thanks to many good samaritans, there are more and more organizations popping up that work hard to combat the issue. In El Dorado Hills, All About Equine Animal Rescue does all it can to rescue horses in peril or unsafe situations. All About Equine was established in 2009 by a few people with the same experience as all those who have opened a rescue before: having seen too much abuse. For many, giving up an animal in a way that takes a toll on their well-being is their way of dealing when financial burdens take on. It was during an economic downturn that AAE came about. The founders could no longer ignore the large numbers of horses neglected and abandoned, even slaughtered. Since June 2009, when a 14-acre, family-owned ranch became a working horse facility, AAE has rescued more than 125 horses and adopted out at least 85. Through volunteers and donor contributions, horses with names such as Reba, Sparky, Mama G, and Calypso have a chance at a new fulfilling life. “The horses are in a safe environment, they are provided with good nutrition, and they are surrounded by dedicated humans to want to make their journey through All About Equine positive and rewarding as they find their forever home,” AAE Public Relations Coordinator Linda Lewis said. “As they advance through our program they gain new skills and experience that help keep them from the dire situations that led them to AAE to begin with.” There are about 100 active monthly volunteers that provide the daily basic care and maintenance for the horses, but annually there are 300
24
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2015
volunteers who go through orientation. In addition to working with the horses during feedings, groomings, and regular upkeep, volunteers assist with administrative tasks, fundraising activities and events, outreach efforts, grant research and writing, program development, and more. For the horses who come through AAE, their lives change dramatically. They have access to a 7-stall barn, a “mare motel,” and a large pasture with a creek of fresh water. “At any given time, there are about 40 horses in the program with some at foster locations,” Lewis said. “Most are available for adoption, some are under evaluation, and some are still in rehab as they return to good health.” AAE also works with youth and adults in various enrichment programs. Throughout summer, camps for children teach basic horsemanship skills - all camp fees benefitting AAE - and a collaboration grows with Horses4Heroes, an organization dedicated to the empowerment and enrichment of youth, adults, and families through activities with horses. Membership is free for veterans and active duty military, nurses, first responders and their families.
Those looking to volunteer with AAE can do so easily through sponsorship, donations, and even fostering. To assist in raising funds for AAE’s rescue and rehabilitation efforts, their fourth annual It’s All About EqWINE California wine tasting event will take place in October; it celebrates their sixth year anniversary. The event will include a live auction, entertainment, and appetizers. Lewis finds her treasure in working with other volunteers toward a common cause: caring for the horses. “[It] generates harmony and friendships, which the horses understand,” Lewis said. “Being part of this unique organization not only helps unwanted horses find their forever home, [it also] provides a unique service to the surrounding communities.”

It’s that time of year again, the beloved Holiday season is upon us and festivities are ready to commence. Whether you’re having a Holiday party, casual dinner gettogether or just gathering friends and family in the same room, prepare your house for company by prepping your carpets and floors. First off, no one wants to throw a festive gathering with unclean floors, right? Welcome your guests in to a clean and impressive home from top to bottom with the various services that Dean’s Carpet Restoration offers. We talked to Dean Carter of Carter’s Carpet Restoration for some major tips on how to prep your carpet the right way and so much more. They are now in their twenty-third year in the carpet business and have won numerous awards from various publications for being the best carpet cleaning service, so it Is safe to say that Dean and his skilled team know what they are 26

doing. Since the weather is cooling down, probably one of the biggest issues for people according to Dean, is getting the carpets to dry in a timely manner. No need to fear this matter however, as Dean and his awesome employees have a solution. Having a party soon? No problem, you can prepare for this by thoroughly and slowing vacuuming the room in question, which in turn aides in the soil removal so that less water will be needed when the professionals come in and get down to business. Carter’s offers a “Dry Steam” carpet cleaning that removes up to 85% more moisture that typically done, and they ensure that their carpets are dry to the touch before the technician leaves. So if you’re stressed and lack the time, no need to worry as Dean and his talented team have your back so you can continue to focus that party planning. Carter’s also offers various services other than carpet cleaning, such as; tile and grout
cleaning, grout color sealing, stone cleaning, wood floor cleaning, upholstery cleaning, and pet odor removal, just to name a few. So even if you have wood floors, dirty upholstery, or if you’re worried your dogs may have left some unwanted scents in your home, count on Carter’s to suit all your needs during this upcoming Holiday Season. Carter’s brings in the big guns when it comes to getting your home in shape because they match their skills with unbeatable tools. They use rotary extractors to ensure an extreme deep cleaning in addition to their huge trucks that are the most powerful carpet cleaning machines made. They also use upscale air movers during the drying process, which is a unique process and guarantees that your carpets will be virtually dry and spotless before they leave so you can feel at ease welcoming friends and family into your transformed and now Holiday party ready home. Carter’s Carpet Restoration is one of the best in our areas when it comes to the carpet cleaning business, just take a look at their outstanding reviews and awards. So not only will Carter’s walk you through the process step by step, but they also provide tips and special promotions on their website that definitely come in handy during the hustle and bustle of the Holiday season.

REALITY CHECKS. WHEN IS IT TIME TO DOWNSIZE... This article is provided by Coldwell Banker BY KRIS VOIGT
LO L
For many people, their house may be their biggest asset. But it also can be their biggest expense. That’s true whether they’re planning for retirement or even if they already are in retirement. So it’s no wonder that many homeowners begin to think about selling their home and moving into a smaller one as they approach their golden years. Downsizing your home doesn’t have to mean downsizing your lifestyle. Homes have steadily expanded over the years with the average home now more than 2,600 square feet in the U.S. according to Census data – 60% larger than it was 40 years ago when families were bigger! So there is plenty of room to downsize without cramping your style. But downsizing doesn’t necessarily mean moving to a smaller home. It can also mean moving to a less expensive residence that’s the same size. Something as simple as moving from LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2015

a top, reputable school district to a district that is not highly rated may lower the cost of a house. And if you do not have school age children, the quality of the school district may not be that important to you. If you’ve been kicking around the idea of cashing in on your home’s equity and moving into a smaller property, there are a number of reasons why it may be the best move you can make right now: the housing market in our area has rebounded quite nicely from the recession with the value of many homes climbing in recent years. Cashing in on some of that equity appreciation may help provide retirement income and extend the life of your nest egg. For more information on the propriety of such a move, please first consult with your financial advisor. A smaller home may mean a smaller mortgage payment each month if you are still paying off an existing loan. Or it might mean paying off your mortgage entirely and being debt free on your new home. Additionally, downsizing may lower your property taxes, energy costs, property insurance and ongoing maintenance and repair expenses depending upon the choices you make. According to the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College (CRR), housing costs (including utilities, taxes and upkeep), represent one of the biggest expenses for a retired couple – 30 percent of expenses for a couple aged 65-74. That’s money that can be spent on other things in retirement. For example, CRR estimates that a couple downsizing from a $375,000 home to a $250,000 home may be able to cut their annual expenses and increase their annual income from savings by a combined $7,260. CRR provides a calculator on their website, squaredaway. bc.edu, that may enable you to determine your own savings. As always, it’s a good idea to consult with your financial advisor before making any decisions. • Some homeowners are reluctant to trade a house for a condominium or town house because of concerns regarding the financial impact of homeowners’ association fees. While such fees can change one’s monthly budget, keep in mind that you may be paying similar expenses as a homeowner in the form of maintenance and upkeep costs. • While a smaller home may mean less space, it could also mean less time and aggravation spent on keeping up a big house. Without all the work that goes into keeping up a bigger home, you may actually find a lot more time to enjoy traveling, hanging out with friends, picking up new hobbies and, generally, having more fun! • Moving from a suburban home to an apartment or condo building in a downtown area with amenities on site may open up a whole new world for retirees. Those who have made the switch often find that they

now can enjoy more trips to the theater, nightclubs, restaurants, shopping, as well as taking advantage of fitness centers and other on-site activities. According to the Wall Street Journal, it can pay to downsize sooner rather than later for those approaching retirement or already retired. The financial benefits can add up over time. Additionally, as we get older, moving gets harder thus it may make a lot of sense to move now rather than waiting. If I can help answer any of your questions about downsizing, please give me a call or e-mail me today. I’d be happy to discuss the pros and cons of making a move and help you decide if downsizing is right for you. DEBI AMBROFF (916) 425-9930

BY KELSEY WEHSELS
Fabulous at Every Age Throughout the lifespan, we encounter different health concerns, physically, emotionally, and mentally. We created a breakdown of different ages for medical lookouts, social pressures and health regiments, along with our editor’s picks for the best products, so every woman can be fabulous at every age.
20’s
The 20s are a time when you are at your physical peak, and hopefully pretty healthy. This doesn’t mean you should assume you are immune to health issues. Be sure to consult your doctor with any medical concerns you might have.
MEDICAL LOOKOUT
It is a common misconception that cancer is for older generations. According to the American Cancer Society, Melanoma (skin cancer) is the most common cancer in young adults, especially young women. It is possible that if someone had a bad sunburn before they were 18 and have a close family member with Melanoma, then they are at risk of developing skin cancer. Beginning in your 20’s, be sure to examine any moles for irregularity in shape or color and visit a dermatologist for an annual checkup.
44
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2015
SOCIAL PRESSURES
Your 20’s are a time when you have hopefully completed your formal education and ready to enter the workforce full time. This can be a stressful time as you adjust to new responsibilities. Be sure to take some time for yourself and de-stress as it can have health ramifications in the future.
HEALTH REGIMENTS
This is the time when you are at your topmost physical shape, so get out there and take advantage! Try new workouts and push yourself.
Editor’s Picks: SKINCARE PRODUCT:
Emme Diane Acne Spot Treatment – While we have officially passed puberty at this point, acne can still be a problem. Try Emme Diane’s Acne Spot Treatment to help with those pesky blemishes. HAIRCARE PRODUCT:
Umberto Beverly Hills Dry Shampoo – Women in their 20s tend to over wash their hair, stripping it of natural oils and causing a lot of damage. Prevent damage and opt for dry shampoo instead of every day washing. FITNESS ACTIVITY:
The Spartan Race – It’s one of the most intense races out there with obstacle courses. Now is the time to go for it!
30’s MEDICAL LOOKOUT
Your 30’s are a time of celebrating new life milestones such as getting married or having babies. Many women are waiting to have babies in later life when they feel more financially confident. It is important to know that there are some risks associated with pregnancy at this age. Fertility decreases, particiularly after the age of 35, so it may take longer to conceive. Miscarriage and risks of birth defects also increase with age. Be sure to speak with your health care provider if you are looking to conceive a child later in life. Another lookout to be mindful of is bone loss, which begins in your 30s. Bone loss can lead to Ostoperosis, a disease in which bone density is reduced, making them vulnerable to painful fractures. With an early head start, you can avoid this by making sure you have a calcium-rich diet, stay active with aerobic exercises (such as jogging), and strength training, such as lifting weights.
SOCIAL PRESSURES
This is the time in life when women are expected to marry and have children. But it’s not for everyone and women can feel pressured from their family and peers to conform to this societal norm.
HEALTH REGIMENTS
Be sure you are getting adequate amount of exercise. The American Council on Exercise recommends 30 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise multiple days a week. Instead of the elevator, opt for the stairs. And trying parking further away from the grocery store to afford yourself more exercise.
Editor’s picks: HAIRCARE PRODUCT:
Drybar 100 Proof Treatment Oil - After years of flat-ironing and blow drying your hair may have left you with some serious split ends. Prevent that from happening with pre-hot-tools serum.
SKINCARE PRODUCT:
Blissfulicious Sugar Scrub – This product, originally for exfoliating the skin, has become a local favorite as a make-up remover, cleanser, moisturizer, even shaving cream. This non-toxic scrub is void of harsh chemicals and is the perfect product to keep your skin glowing. FITNESS ACTIVITY:
Fun Runs – These runs, such as mud runs and color runs, are a fun activity to keep you in shape. They aren’t overly competitive and you can go at your own pace, all while having fun!

40’s
This is the time when your children might be grown or caring for elderly parents. This is also a time when your body will start to transition. There are a couple of things to be aware of during this time.
MEDICAL LOOKOUT
While menopause may seem like a far away idea, this is the time where you might experience “perimenopause,” or, the “menopause transition,” where your body’s estrogen levels decrease. This time of your life has not only physical implications but emotional and psychological ones as well from the change in hormones. If you begin to experience anxiety or depression, consult a health care professional, However simply establishing a healthy diet and regular exercise should help lift your spirits.
SOCIAL PRESSURES
There can be a lot of stresses during this time, whether it be your growing children or aging parents. Try joining a club, such as a book club with like-minded peers who can not only relate, but provide a temporary reprieve from life's pressures. 46
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2015

Yoga – It is beneficial for not just your physical health, but your emotional and mental health as well.
50’s
While some people believe reaching 50 means you’re “over the hill,” many women enjoy this time of their lives. By this time, your children are probably grown, or close to it, and you now have time to devote to your own interests.
MEDICAL LOOKOUT
Giving more time and attention to your medical needs is especially important in this stage in life. Estrogen levels have been gradually decreasing, and in fact, all of your ovarian hormones drop significantly in your 50s. In addition to reaching menopause, the 50s are a time for women to begin screening for colorectal cancer. It is a recommendation of the American Cancer Society that by the time women reach 50, they begin the following tests: colonoscopy (every 10 years), flexible sigmoidoscopy (every 5 years), fecal occult blood test (every year), and fecal immonuchemical test (every year).
SOCIAL PRESSURES
By this time, your children are probably grown and have moved out of the house. Living in an empty nest can be a difficult transition. Try getting a pet like a small dog or a cat to help with this change.
HEALTH REGIMENTS
While you may not feel as active as you once were, maintaining a healthy amount of exercise is crucial. Be sure to take the time to do something that will fit your busy lifestyle, such as riding a bike or walking some of the area’s nature trails.

60’s This is the age when your children are grown and you might be grandparent now. It is also a time to take care of your health as your body ages and more problems might arise. MEDICAL LOOKOUT
People often believe that as we age, we need to focus on our physical health, forgetting mental health still needs to be maintained at this age. By being aware of our cognitive function, we will be mentally alert and stimulated. Keep your brain active and be sure to read and do a puzzle every day to keep your cognition active. SOCIAL PRESSURES
You might be at the stage where you might move to a smaller house or senior living community. There are options for everyone so be sure to do your research about what option is best for you, and don’t feel pressured to make a commitment. HEALTH REGIMENTS
When we age, it can be difficult to move the way we once used to. Be sure to consult a doctor about your physical activity, and he or she might be able to recommend the best forms of exercise for your body.
Editor’s Picks: SKINCARE PRODUCT:
Obagi Nu-Derm Clear #3 - This product contains hydroquinone, which helps eliminate dark spots on the face and hands. HAIRCARE PRODUCT:
Revitalash Hair Conditioner - If you are experiencing hair thinning and do not have a prescription for a hair loss treatment, you can use overthe-counter Revitalash Hair Conditioner, which acts as a growth stimulator, increasing blood flow to the scalp and encourages hair to grow stronger.

GEYSERVILLE
Geyserville BY DON AND ANN JACKSON
A Quintessential Yesteryear Wine Country Getaway
How would you like a wine tasting weekend without the crowds? Would you like to feel like you’re transported back in time to the Napa or Sonoma of 70 years ago when both towns were small and very few restaurants or lodging choices existed? Well, if your answer is yes to both these questions you need to head off to the tiny unincorporated town of Geyserville in Sonoma County. This little town, all of a few blocks, is usually not crowded at all and just a short visit into the town’s Bosworth & Son General Store-with an operating history of over 100 years-can take you back to the nostalgic past of a bygone era. bosworthandson.com. Not exactly sure how Geyserville qualifies but the local brochures refer to it as the Wine Capital of Sonoma County. Considered a gateway to both Alexander Valley and Dry
Creek appellations the number of exceptional nearby wineries should satisfy the oenological neophyte as well as the wine connoisseur. Both the lodging recommendations we’ll mention later offer guests quite a few complimentary or two-for-one wine tasting experiences not often offered in the busier wine country districts. If you’re a fan of Francis Ford Coppola’s wines and his movies, like we are, don’t miss a visit to his Geyserville winery. This winery has a fantastic museum-like display of memorabilia from The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Tucker and a few of his other cinematic gems. In addition to a couple of delightful wine tasting venues Coppola also offers the most upscale swimming pool outing on property that we’ve ever seen at any winery. Although it’s quite pricey, those couples and families looking for a really exclusive private club-like pool experience should enjoy their deluxe cabines, bocce courts and posh service. A poolside bar and casual dining options are also featured like you’d find at a first-rate resort but sans lodging. www. franciscoppolawinery.com. A few of the many wineries and tasting rooms close by are Clos du Bois, Geyser Peak, Dutcher Crossing, Raymond Burr, Trione, J Rickards, Pedroncelli and the beautiful estate-like setting of Ferrari-Carano. For all the nearby wineries check out both these websites: www. alexandervalley.org; drycreekvalley.org. For those who don’t like to drive back from wine tasting venues we recommend hoofing it from our two lodging choices right in town to Locals, which opened in 2002 as the first independently owned collective tasting room in all of California. Lodging in Geyserville:
Even though lodging choices are limited to about four or five possibilities here are the two we’ve stayed at a couple of times and both have lived up to their hype. If you like historic B & B’s you should enjoy the eight room HopeMerrill House, a former stagecoach stop which features Victorian architecture, scrumptious home cooked breakfasts, antique furnishings and quite surprisingly a swimming pool, which is very rare for a B&B. All rooms have air-conditioning and the Inn should be very proud of their Green imprint and newly installed solar system. Into seeing world class silk wallpapering displays? Well, Hope-Merrill has the most beautiful silk-screened designer wallpapers, with 48

stunningly different ones used together in each room, that we’ve encountered. When you see the intricate designs it’s hard to imagine anyone hanging them so evenly correct and artistic. www.hopeinns.com. Our other top choice is the tastefully renovated Geyserville Inn at the rural edge of
town smack-dab in the middle of an aesthetic vineyard. This boutique like property features forty-one rooms and suites with featherbeds, down comforters, complimentary wi-fi and most have fireplaces and decks or patios. We especially like the king suites located separately to the rear of the property with Jacuzzi tubs, microwaves
and small fridges. Geyserville Grill, the inn’s beautifully renovated restaurant located next door in the classic and historic Hoffman House premises, features a stylish bar, a couple of separate and cozy dining rooms as well as a very comfortable al fresco seating area under shady oak trees. www.geyservilleinn.com LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2015

What’s in a name? If it’s a restaurant, hopefully it’s something to suggest the atmosphere and attitude; something memorable that sticks, capturing that special something making the restaurant different from all others. For the second Land Ocean (also known as “LO”) location in Roseville, the owners wanted to bring the words steak and seafood together. It was easy: steak is from land, seafood from the ocean, hence Land Ocean was born. To add a visual to the name, the owners hung the iconic bull on the beach photo.

S I P & S AV O R Described as a “modern version of a steak and seafood restaurant” by coowner Karoline Platt, Land Ocean “brings all your steakhouse favorites into a warm, casual setting, giving guests the opportunity to come in dressed casually or dressed up, and feel completely comfortable.” The better word to use, Platt said, is “upscale casual. We think of it as a painting. We share our vision of what we want in a restaurant, bringing together the decor, ambiance, food and staff. And our personal favorite, the wine!” Platt is co-owner of Land Ocean with her husband, Mark Platt. He has been in the restaurant business through Chart House Restaurants more than 35 years in Colorado, Virginia, Florida, the Caribbean, and then Northern California, where he decided to open the first Land Ocean location in Folsom. When Chart House closed, Mark became the opening Partner and General

Manager for PF Changs in Roseville. Later, he went on to co-open Crush 29 and Suede Blue. It was in 2009 that he and his wife decided to open their own restaurant, first El Dorado Hills bar and restaurant, Sienna in 2010, Land Ocean in 2011. Unlike her husband’s, Platt’s background is more in sales and marketing, “but being married to a lifetime restaurant guy, after 30 years together, I think I have a strong [restaurant] background as well!” The menu at Land Ocean has everything from Thai chicken egg rolls and grilled artichoke appetizers, to ahi tuna salads, ribs, and the much loved macadamia nut crusted sea bass entrees. Diners can also find comfort foods like pasta and burgers and fancier choices such as filet mignon and the “lavish” burger, which has caramelized onion and roasted garlic and habanero aioli sauce to flavor. It’s a twister of tastes.
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2015
The most favored bar drinks are the Jalapeno Martini and Orogeny Chardonnay. Other popular choices are the Moscow Mule and the unlimited mimosas on weekends. The Platt’s pay attention to every menu choice, tasting candidates one by one to give their approval. “We truly care about [our customer’s] dining experience and appreciate their feedback… the good and the bad.” It’s a combination of back-lit onyx, exterior wood louvers, chicken rotisserie and fire-lit walls that make customers actually feel as if they’re simply enjoying a night out at a
friend’s. “Our goal is to have each guest be treated like they are a guest in our home,” Platt said. The family style ambiance and dim lighting make Land Ocean not only the perfect rendezvous for a romantic evening, but a great option for a relaxed dinner with the kids. The only thing you have to bring is your appetite. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

BY NICK DEDIER
WHAT ARE RESTAURANTS?
Community. Plain and simple. Restaurants are about Community. For over 6 months now I have been lucky enough to be a part of Lavish Living Magazine where I have the opportunity to write about wine lists, service, travel and various things that have to do with the hospitality industry. Frankly the food, beverage and hospitality industry has taken over the world. From celebrity chefs to reality TV shows to burger battles it seems that every corner of the restaurant has been sensationalized (even the darker corners.) Every month as I sit down to write, with that in mind, I ask myself “what is it that people NICK DEDIER should know or want to know about restaurants and dining out?” What is something you can’t get by watching Alton Brown zip tie a wooden spoon to a chef’s face? Or by watching Guy Fieri “hunch” over another dripping cheeseburger? This month I am lucky to have found a theme in my writing that I happily divulged at the beginning; the idea of community. 56
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2015
Restaurants are where community happens and it starts with the staff. At my restaurant, Aji, our staff is the foundation of our restaurant community and they are the caretakers of that energy that we all thrive on. You can read it by the smiles on their faces. The way that they talk about the food or describe a cocktail. You can see it in the way that they interact with everyone from their service teammates to the managers and the guest’s kids who drew them a picture. Without a strong positive and loving staff the food, the wine and the cocktails would all lack the voice they need to properly represent their quality to the guests. Beyond the staff, a good restaurant, will have communal energy, something you can feel. There is something electric about the guests that gather in a great restaurant. From an amazing lunch crowd, to the same Saturday night couple that takes table 34 every week, to the bar regulars that gather and light up the joint for a Giants game or simply to celebrate Wine Wednesday, you can tell when you’re in a great spot because you are enveloped by the soft energy of the community that gathers. That is what restaurants are all about and this is where their true value lies. In my years as a restaurant professional I have become an expert on cracking the code to finding or building restaurant
communities around the country and here are 5 easy ways for you to tap into that community, find some love and stretch the value of your dollar. • Find the place that “everyone is talking about” and go in with an open mind. If you go in determined to hate some place chances are you’re going to hate it. Do what you can to be positive and awesome. Enjoy what’s around you. • Good people, more often than not, get good service. So when you arrive be a good person. Be polite to the host, look the server in the eye and be excited to take part on something they are very proud of. • Get outside of the box and try what they do in their restaurant. Not what you do on a daily basis. Become a part of their community. Experience their brand, their food, their cocktails. Let’s face it; it gets boring doing things your way every time if you modify the same burger, salad or sushi roll the same way every time you’re not allowing yourself the opportunity to experience anything amazing. Take a chance, get outside of the box…Hell…Order dessert first. • Shake someone’s hand. They usually have no choice but to connect with you and more often than not you’ll be memorable. This will greatly improve your chance of getting good service and instantly becoming a member of their little community. • Smile. I know I have said this before but the simplest way to open up any community or any individual is to smile. Simple. The easiest person to connect with in a restaurant is the person that is happy to be there. Every service staff member will rise to the bait of a happy, excited guest. Your experience will benefit as a result. At the end of the day a restaurant is about the community that inhabits it, not the burgers it serves, the mac and cheese it sings or the cocktails it pours. It is about the people who work there, eat there, visit there and catch their own little slice of the Joie de vivre with a small plate and a glass of wine. Find the places you love, connect where you can and frequent them as often as possible. Finding a great community is like finding a needle in a haystack and hospitality is a dying art so when you find the one that resonates with you, patronize them, take your family, tell your friends and spread the word that there is a great little community in your neighborhood.

LO C AL FO OT H I L L WI N E S THIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL SIERRA FOOTHILL WINERIES.
TOOGOOD ESTATE WINERY BY LAUREN CLIFFORD
Toogood Estate Winery, located in Somerset California, offers not only a quality bottle of wine, but a good time as well. First established in May of 2001 by owner Paul Toogood, the entire winery consists of about forty acres of El Dorado County’s beautiful rolling hills. It all started when Paul followed his passion for wine, studying subjects such as Agriculture and Wines of the World, among other things. Upon graduation from UC Davis however, he established his own veterinary practice in Northern California, but his passion for wine never left him. After touring El Dorado County a few times in the fall of 2000, Paul decided to pursue his love of winemaking and established the lovely Toogood Estate. Shortly after, Paul started another exciting project, excavating the wine cave which was completed in nine months. The wine cave features over 5,000 square feet of 58
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2015
underground space in a temperature controlled environment which is perfect for producing great wine. Not only is the wine cave a fantastic and original feature for a winery, but it is also very beneficial since it keeps a steady and natural temperature and does not require the use of any type of cooling equipment. The winery is also completely solar powered which is one amazing feat! Toogood’s first wine was the 2002 vintage, which was bottled in January of 2003 and has been successful ever since. With the business still prospering in the wine community, the vineyards now currently consist of twelve planted acres with a huge selection of different wines available. Some of the wine selection includes; the classic Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Petite Syrah. There is also a selection of 2002 vintage wines available such as; Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Claret, and Paul’s very
own signature wine, Foreplay, which is a unique and one-of-a-kind sensual red wine. With about thirty red wines, ten white wines and twenty-six port wines, Toogood offers a taste for everyone. The Toogood Estate Winery also offers a variety of spectacular views that can suit any special occasion or celebration. Enjoy a bottle of wine on the wine cave dining room, the patio in front of the cascading waterfall, or by the private pool that overlooks the vineyards. Sound dreamy enough? Toogood is definitely the winery to host any event, private gathering, or just a place to go to and enjoy a fun and relaxing day filled with fantastic wine. Wine tasting at Toogood is the cherry on top of the breathtaking estate, which you must experience for yourself. Since their wine is aged slowly and year around in the cool cave, expect some intense flavors with exceptional quality. Take a trip to Toogood and have a glass, cheers.

LO C AL LO D I WI NES THIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL LODI WINERIES.
Estate CRUSH BY LAUREN CLIFFORD
How would you like to spend the weekend tasting a variety of delectable wines that are both carefully handcrafted and local to our great valley? Estate Crush, one of downtown Lodi’s first custom crush facilities for exceptional wine production can offer you just that. Estate Crush, which was founded in the spring of 2009, was specifically designed to assist in others success in the wine business by offering their ability to create luxurious wines for all clients, which in turn saves their clients time and resources while they build their own brand and sell their own wines. It is an urban winery, yet Estate Crush has its own team that produce and bottle small wine lots for other wineries or for interested individuals. Managing partners Bob and Ali Colarossi oversee day-to-day winery operations
60
and both possess an extensive amount of knowledge in marketing and winemaking. Bob even studied winemaking through the UC Davis Winemaking Extension program, and Ali has been helping build consumer brands for years. Essentially, Estate Crush is a savior in the wine community because they allow their facility and company to give wine brand owners the chance to test and build their brands without the expense of purchasing and maintaining their own facility. In a sense, Estate Crush makes it easy for others to create their own custom wine lots because they share their extended knowledge of the business and their wine expertise with other wine lovers. With Estate Crush, you’re leaving the winemaking to the experts. Their facility is quite impressive and offers 6,000 square feet
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2015
of barrel storage and over 16,000 square feet of total winery. Their tasting room opened in December of 2011 and features over thirtyfive brands and about eighty-eighty wines. What’s really exciting and different about Estate Crush is that sixteen of these prestigious and varied wines are on the tasting and by-the-glass menu, which changes monthly. This is also a great excuse to take a visit every month or so and try as many different ones as possible. In addition to that, more than eighty-five of their wines have been selected as medalists in prestigious competitions and their variety offers a wine selection to accommodate everyone’s taste. It is interesting to note that Estate Crush is not a vineyard, but rather a production facility that creates a special connection between clients and a shared love of winemaking. Another highlight you can’t forget is their beautiful tasting room where they hold quarterly educational tastings alongside wine and cheese pairings. Not only do they offer the crush-to-bottle program which allows clients to directly interact with the Estate Crush team and customize their own winemaking plan, but they also do scheduled tastings with their very own professional winemakers and even bottle onsite. As if Estate Crush wasn’t interesting enough already, another fun fact is that their very own Cinsault comes from Lodi’s oldest vineyard and they also create the Stellina Old Vine Zinfandel right from Bob and Ali’s very own home property. Right now they are busy wrapping up harvest and getting 2015 on its way, but they will still be holding a couple of their own special events so be sure to partake in the festivities and see all that Estate Crush has to offer. FINAL THOUGHT
Random ACTS OF Kindness BY KELSEY WEHSELS
I had a very interesting experience while I was driving a couple of months ago. It’s not that there was less than usual traffic, or that I hit every green light on the way home, which is a rare phenomenon in itself. As I was driving along, there wasn’t much traffic, so I was at a healthy cruising speed when I noticed a man on the right side of the road, sitting on a green grassy hill in the shade with his dog. You’re probably thinking the strange thing I’m referring to is the green grass given the drought we’re in. But it’s not. As I approached, he stuck up his hand and waved at me. My first thought was that he was waving at another car, but I double checked my rear view, and there were no other cars around me. Then I thought he must have confused me with a friend, but I was probably going too fast for him to recognize the driver. And from his positon on the grassy hill, he was in no positon to panhandle. 66
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2015
So my conclusion was that he was waving at me out of pure benevolence. And that confused me. And then I got to wondering why I was so confused by this man’s action. He was simply being nice. But then it hit me that this is the kind of society we have bred: a society where kindness confuses us. If someone waves at you, he must want something. Or, he must have been waving at someone else because surely, he would not wave to a complete stranger. That would be ludicrous. After my revelation, I thought maybe it was time to turn things around. Instead of a society where we’re taught to questions such gestures, why don’t we do it more often? You know, make it the norm instead of the exception. My final thought is this: even if you’re not having a good day, take the time to smile at the cashier, let that driver in, or say hello to that random person walking by. You never know what type of day that person is having and who knows, maybe you just made it.
