EDITORS NOTE
CHEERS to
September I
absolutely love September. The shorter days, cooler evenings, the start to autumn and all the fun, new looks for the upcoming season are all favorites of mine. As summer draws to a close, I am so looking forward to the change in seasons. Before we know it, everything will have pumpkin flavor in the title and we will be pulling out the cozy sweaters and booties. Most importantly, September is our annual Wine Edition here at Lavish. If you haven’t figured it out yet by our editorial content or attended one of our monthly release parties, I love wine. With so many amazing tasting rooms, restaurants and wineries here in our own community, we are so fortunate to have an abundance of incredible options to fit any palate. Our feature this month, Raising the Wine Bar, highlights some unique wine bars where you can enjoy some incredible selections.
“If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it.” – William Arthur Ward
Also in this issue we have our Day to Night fashion shoot highlighting some must-haves for your fall wardrobe. Our friends at Button Up Boutique have generously outfitted this month’s model in this seasons latest trends. Our Sip and Savor opener this month is the gorgeous Cibo 7 in Roseville, which has graced our cover the past two months. Their creations are not only delicious, but stunning in presentation. If you have not made it out to this gem for date night, you are missing out! By far one of the best meals I have had in a long time. I recommend their Espresso Martini for dessert. Amazing! As always, thank you for your loyal readership! Cheers to September and I look forward to seeing you all in October for our annual Home Edition!

MAKE-UP Maven SHAIKH BEELA, HENNA MOODS BY KELSEY WEHSELS

LAVISH ON LOCALS
“My humble beginnings as a makeup artist started unknowingly when my mom forced me to learn makeup at a beauty school saying ‘it will help you in taking care of yourself,’” she explained. “There’s a saying ‘mother is the one who knows you best, and loves you the most’ and I couldn’t agree more.” Being the quieter one of her family, she became fascinated with understanding human behaviors, motives, and psyche, which is what led her to get her degree in psychology from Government Degree College in Pakistan. However, she has always had a passion for the arts. “My hobbies were always about creating, whether it was designing or sewing a dress or doing henna art, painting a mural or making handmade clutches or purses,” she said. Living in Lahore, a large metropolitan city in central Pakistan, Beela decided to move to the United States in 1997. One year later in 1998, Henna Moods was founded. “When I moved to California, I started doing threading for my friends and family and I was spotted by Diana Penna at KCRA 3, and since then, I’ve been on a few news channels,” she explained. From there, she got her license from the state board, attended an academy of cosmetic arts and has had numerous other training opportunities. Henna Moods offers a variety of services such as film, video and television makeup, print media, fashion shows, and of course weddings, which is Beela’s favorite aspect of her job. “I love to do bridal make up because I find the opportunity to be an honor,” she said. “Just realizing the fact that she chose me to be her makeup and hair artist for the most special day of her life is priceless to me.” With a large team of 10 people, Henna Moods is able to offer all services related to the bride, including hair, makeup, threading and henna art. However, one of the biggest highlights of Beela’s career did not come from her makeup artistry skills, but success in helping pass legislation. Working with Senator Rudy Bermudez, they passed Assembly 18
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2015
Bill No. 282 in 2003, which allows anyone to practice threading (a technique of using thread for hair removal, especially the eyebrows),without attending a cosmetology school. “Presenting the bill was very nerve racking and intimidating for me,” she said. “It’s not very easy to talk in front of so many senators in an assembly hall, but I think my passion made it possible.” And passion she has. “Being a makeup artist is the best thing that ever happened to me,” she said. While she admits owning her business can be difficult at times, specifically the accounting and maintaining finances, she absolutely loves her job, and she couldn’t have chosen a better location. “As far as the makeup industry and community here in the Sacramento area, it is the strongest and best in the nation (I believe in that passionately),” she said. “All of the hair and makeup artists support and facilitate each other. There truly is such a strong support system here.” FOR MORE INFORMATION:

Wine Pairings
Olive Oil MEDITERRANEAN GOLD:
BY SERENA PIPER
When people think of wine, they usually think of cheese. However, bread and a specialty olive oil dip complement many styles of wine. With so many different types and flavors, it’s no wonder it is becoming popular in the wine industry. The world consumes an average of about 2.25 million tons of olive oil each year, and in the United States, California produces 99% of olive oil. For thousands of years, people have been enjoying olive oil, but because of all the cooking shows and celebrity recommendations of recipes, the love of olive oil has increased. Most of the time, we see olive oil in bottles on a restaurant table next to a bottle of vinegar. We pour a few droplets on a dish and use it to flavor the bread basket. But olive oil isn’t only for bread or pan prep before cooking dinner. “Extra virgin olive oil whisked with some good balsamic and a pinch of salt and pepper makes a wonderful salad dressing, especially if you are using something flavorful like lemon olive oil and peach balsamic,” We Olive owner Joan Masegian said. Folsom’s We Olive sells a variety of olive oils - samples available - and a few other olive oil-based products, such as lotions and soaps. Masegian also recommends marinating garlic, basil, and rosemary olive oils combined with seasonings to give that extra special healthy taste to a meal. “The addition of a fruit flavored balsamic to this marinade will make your marinade even more outstanding,” she said. If you shy away from being adventurous with seasonings and flavor combinations, Masegian has some advice. “The most important thing about olive oil is to use a high quality, fresh(hopefully extra virgin) olive oil for 22
your dish.” This promises the best flavor possible. The next step is choosing an olive oil with a low level of flavor. “Extra virgin olive oil can have many different levels of intensity, from very buttery to strong, pungent and bitter. You wouldn’t want to cook your eggs in the morning in a strong bold olive oil, but it would be great for sautéing some fresh greens and onions,” Masegian said. Masegian and co-owner Ken Masegian often recommend the Lemon Orzo Pasta Salad to customers. Their blog lists the recipe along with many others, which are posted keeping in mind those that are trying to decrease their use of butter. The We Olive owners run their store prepared for any questions that might be thrown their way, from what the differences are between olive oils to how to pick one. We Olive has paired together certain olive oils with different types of wine to help maximize their flavor. Try out these different combinations to enhance your wine experience. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT 3 STRANDS GLOBAL
BY SERENA PIPER
In the United States, it is estimated that between 100,000 and 300,000 people, usually women and children, are trafficked annually (Human Trafficking 101 for School Administrators and Staff). The U.S. Department of State defines trafficking as “involuntary servitude,” including sex, child labor, and migrant workers as debt bondage as just some of the many forms. According to the 2014 Global Slavery Index, there are close to 24
35.8 million slaves around the world today. Oftentimes, victims aren’t identified. In the U.S., California is the “hot spot for domestic and international human trafficking,” and has three of the highest child sex trafficking areas: San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Some children are manipulated and lured into the industry as young as 12 years old. There are many organizations passionate and dedicated
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2015
to helping combat the tragedy, including 3Strands Global, Inc. A 17-year-old girl taken from her California home was the catalyst for 3Strands Break Free Runs. She was located and rescued by the FBI after eight days of trafficking. It was the girl’s mother and three other women who started the Break Free Run: The Race to End Human Trafficking to raise awareness and funds. Profits from the Break Free Runs are donated to organizations that offer unique and effective approaches to fighting human trafficking including employment services to at-risk communities, restorative services to survivors, and preventative services for vulnerable and atrisk youth. If participating in an actual run isn’t an option for you, signing up to be a virtual runner works just as well. The participant is given a Tek shirt with the theme of the year and then runs in their neighborhood. “[The shirts] give us an opportunity to reach more people with the message that human trafficking is real and everyone can do something,” said Ashlie Bryant, 3Strands Co-Founder and VP of Development and Outreach. This year, Bryant expects near 1,000 attendees at the 3rd annual Oakland run, more than 3,000 at the 6th annual Folsom run and additional participants at the inaugural Break Free Runs held in Sonoma
and San Diego. The organization has already established strong connections within the communities where Break Free Runs are held, and continues their mission of global action by employing survivors of human trafficking and those at risk in Cambodia, Haiti, and Nepal. 3Strands sells handcrafted products with 100 percent of the profits going directly to support survivors of human trafficking and those at risk. “Human trafficking happens everywhere and affects cities and town all over the world. We believe even one victim is too many, and we can all do something to end to human trafficking.” For 3Strands Global employees and volunteers, at the end of the day there is a sense of purpose. “This crime is dark and can sometimes seem all encompassing, but when we employ, educate or engage-- we see hope and that is big,” Bryant said. The community can show their support and join 3Strands at the 6th Annual Break Free Run – The Race to End Human Trafficking on September 26, 2015 at The Parkway Trails in Folsom at 8:00 a.m. Participants can register to run or walk the 5K, 10K, 9.8 miler, or the kids’ fun run at www.BreakFreeRun.org. For more information on 3Strands or to shop handcrafted products made by human trafficking survivors and those at risk visit www.3StrandsGlobal.com.

LAVISH ON LOCALS
From Our
HOUSE toYOURS BY MATTHEW OLIVER | OWNER & PARTNER @ HOUSE OF OLIVER
“I want your job.” I hear that all the time. I am not just a co-owner and partner at House of Oliver wine lounge, it is my responsibility to find, taste, sample and select all of our wines and to personally create a tasty wine menu. Sounds fun and exciting. Who wouldn’t want to taste hundreds of wines a week? Chardonnays, pinots, cabernets? Sounds ideal. The truth is, for every great bottle of wine that I discover, I taste a hundred wines that I spit out and wonder, why did I ever drink that in the first place? Yes, I take one for the team. Day in and day out, I taste some foul wines to discover the gems that we get the privilege of presenting to you. Deep down inside, we all know this to be true. When visiting our favorite “classy” restaurant, we look the wine menu over, not looking for something new to try and discover, but looking for that safe and sure bet that we have been drinking for years. Why? Who wants to risk buying a $10 or maybe we are being feisty, $20 glass of wine on something we have never tasted before? And we are sure not going to purchase an $80 bottle of wine while out entertaining some friends if we do not know that it is going to wow and amaze our taste buds. So we never venture into the unknown world of fabulous wines that are out there just waiting to be experienced and enjoyed. So I am here to help. The second thing I hear all the time; “What are you drinking?” That is one of my favorite questions. Because I own a wine lounge people think that I am always drinking some expensive rare name brand bottle. Nothing against expensive recognizable bottles of wine, but price does not always equate to taste, and name brand seldom equates to quality. One of my greatest joys and passions is to find that tasty boutique wine that has yet to truly be discovered and share it with friends and see their 26
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2015
eyes light up as their taste buds come alive. It’s even more fun when they ask me how expensive the bottle is and I am able to share that it is an affordable find that you could enjoy every day. Almost equally enjoyable is to share a recognizable name brand wine that many have written off to see their surprise when they find out not only do they enjoy the wine but that there is a lot more to the brand than just the name slapped on a bottle. Allow me to share with you a tasty find that you are bound to love. Every once in a while you taste a wine that whisks you away to romantic evenings with cool breezes and moonlit skies. When I took one sip of this wine it brought me back to Spain, late nights filled with laughter and music and delicious food. It so caught me off guard that we had to rewrite our whole menu to find a way to fit it in. The wine; BLUEGRAY Priorat from Juan Gil. Priorat, a region of Spain, traditionally a Grenache (garnacha) blend and the BLUEGRAY does not fail in that regard. 45% grenache, 25% cabernet sauvignon and 30% carignan combined to create a flavor profile of rich black cherries, blackberries accented by spicy notes of dark licorice and subtle tannins, giving this a medium body and a soft mouthfeel that lingers where you want it to. What adds to the mediterranean sexiness of this tasty wine, you might ask. It’s affordability. For a wine of this caliber, from this region, it is relatively inexpensive. So the next time you are out and about take a risk and try something new, you may just like it and if you are lucky you are going to love it. BAR With several different wineries in Northern California, it’s no surprise there is an abundance of wine bars popping up to pour these regional favorites as well as a vast global selection of wines. We found 5 local wine bars that provide not only excellent wine, but fun environments, incredible customer service, and most importantly, expertise in the wine industry.
to be where life was already happening, not reinvent it,” he said. “We want to be where life is taking place and we believe we have the perfect location to create that environment.” The menu changes every 2-3 months to transform with the seasons and they also offer flight tasting regularly to ensure that customers have the opportunity to try new things. They also encourage that message through their wine club, which offers 2 bottles a month, discounts, and free wine tasting. Paired with their wine menu is also a menu of pairing plates, featuring items such as cheese boards, paninis, and salads. But the most impressive thing about the food menu is the quality of the food. Without a freezer or a microwave, everything is prepared fresh. And when you ask Matthew what his favorite wine is he will say “that’s too difficult to answer.” However, his current palette likes big Napa cabs. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

House of Oliver For those who like to enjoy not just a great glass of wine, but a sophisticated and engaging
atmosphere as well, House of Oliver is the place to go. The wine lounge, a year old, is owned and operated by brothers, Matthew and Kyle Oliver. Matthew, who has experience with wine making in Amador County, got the idea for a wine lounge when he was visiting his brother in Spain. “I noticed the environment created simply by enjoying a great glass of wine,” Matthew explained. “The sense of community it created was incredible and that was something we wanted to create.” And they have established that atmosphere in Roseville. “We wanted a nice patio and we wanted LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2015

UnWined Nestled off of Sutter Street in
Historic Folsom is a quaint wine boutique, complete with wines by the bottle, wine gifts, and of course, a wine bar. Erik Loigom and his wife, Crickett, opened UnWined 7 years ago. “We always wanted to open up a place like this,” he said. After looking several places, the couples decided on Folsom for their shop and wine bar because they liked the outdoor seating, the modern look of the building, and the traffic that Sutter Street brings. Their menu changes every Monday, offering a separate selection each week. “We want our patrons to have the opportunity to try something different,” Loigom said. However, he admits that sometimes they need to change selections midweek, such as when a customer loved a wine so much, they ended up buying the whole case. Looking at the menu, you will notice mostly California selection wines. “It’s what our customers want,” he said. “We know our clientele, and it’s what they love so that’s what we bring in.” On top of their wine selection, UnWined offers cheese plates, olives and salami to complement the wine. Loigom
also explained that some people bring their own food, such as a pizza from down the street at Chicago Fire and head over for a bottle of wine. If you have any questions about wine, you can ask Erik, who tastes close to 50 to 60 different wines a week, making him an unofficial expert on the topic. His personal preference? Pinot Noir. Capitol Cellars If you are looking for a rare and usually difficult-to-find bottle
of wine, chances are Capitol Cellars has it. Growing up in the industry, Marcus Graziano, proprietor at Capitol Cellars, developed a passion for wine at a young age. After attending UC Davis and getting a degree in economics and international relations, he was told to follow his dreams. So 30 years ago, he opened Capitol Cellars. “I wanted to start a wine retail business that had wines that are highly sought after and difficult to find,” he said. On top of Capitol Cellar’s extensive collection of rare wines, a tasting bar allows customers to taste certain wines. And what is unique about the wine bar? A tool called the coravin. It allows the pourer to extract wine without even opening the bottle, keeping the wine fresh. “It’s got so many applications,” said Graziano. “It allows people to drink wine more responsibly, and if people want different wines, they can do so without opening the whole bottle.” Capitol Cellars also offers a wine club, which is unique in that it is customized to the consumer’s choice. “The wine club is designed to cater to the individual and their tastes,” said Graziano. “It matters what they like, not what I like.” On top of a wine retail store and wine tasting room, Capitol Cellars also offers wine lockers which can hold up to 30 cases. Customers usually utilize the lockers when they are over capacity at their home, or they are travelling. “People email or call us when they need a bottle and we have it ready for them when they need it,” he said.

Downtown & Vine Downtown & Vine, located on the bustling K Street in
Downtown Sacramento, is a premier wine bar offering some of the best local wines from the surrounding regions of Sacramento, Napa Valley and Sonoma. Owner, Kate Chomko, became exposed to wine when she moved to Europe and fell in love with the great food and wine to pair with it. After attending London’s Le Cordon Bleu, and moving to California, she got a job cooking at a winery, where she decided to learn more about wine. For her Sacramento was a no-brainer for the location of Downtown & Vine. “Sacramento has 15+ million visitors from all over the world each year and there wasn’t any place that was showcasing all the fantastic wine regions that surround us here,” she explained. “So we started as a collective tasting room, representing twelve wineries from Napa, Sonoma, Amador and El Dorado County.” The wine menu changes monthly, with a winery of the month, featuring 3 of their wines on the menu for that month. Along with the wine menu, Downtown & Vine also features a small food menu. “Our menu is full of fruits and vegetables based on what we get from the farmers each week, and filled with meats, cheeses, and 42

breads from wonderful artisan producers,” said Chomko. And the name fits. “It seems perfect, Downtown & Vine is the intersection between the farm and the glass, and Sacramento’s all about that,” she said. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

The name has a double meaning in that they offer personalized wine labels, which have become popular. With a graphic designer on site, It’s Personal is able to make labels for any occasion including weddings, birthdays, and graduations. They also offer personalized labels to restaurants and businesses for marketing promotions. “It’s the perfect give to give someone who has everything,” said Michael Conti, business manager. The wine list remains pretty constant throughout the year, but different variations are offered with each harvest. Van Wie’s favorite wine? “In the warm months I have a cold crisp Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay or dry Rose,” she said. “In fall and winter, you’ll see me sipping our cabernet or zinfandel.” You can enjoy live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights with “Open Mic Night” on Wednesday nights. IT’S PERSONAL WINE 609 Sutter St. Folsom, (916) 932-4234
It’s Personal Having opened in August 2014, It’s Personal Wine sits on the famous Sutter Street in Historic
Old Folsom. “The concept of having a casual, friendly wine bar with live entertainment was very appealing, we wanted a warm and accessible place where people could explore and experience local wines,” said owner, Kate Van Wie. It’s Personal does just that for their customers: make it personal. “We have a large following of locals who simply come in to have a glass of wine and visit with others,” said Van Wie. “We joke that we are like ‘Cheers’ the bar and it’s kind of true, we strive to know your name.” LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2015

When it comes to great food and restaurants, our community can certainly hold its own. In the past two years alone, we've seen an emergence of top-notch, brand-new restaurants modeled after those of the big cities, both in cuisine and atmosphere. But the real standouts are the restaurants that have been here for forty years and are still servings some of the best cuisine around, while also molding and shaping with the ties, using fresh, local produce whenever possible. We feel lucky to be able to enjoy these local chefs, wineries and restuarants in our own backyard-so dig in and enjoy!

HARNEY LANE Winery For more than one hundred years, the George Mettler family has farmed Harney Lane, a 100-acre parcel of land just east of Lodi. But it wasn’t until 2006 that they decided to venture into winemaking. The family now has complete control of their wines from the vineyard, to the bottle, to the consumer. All the grapes are hand picked, hand sorted, then fermented in small lots and barrel aged. This attention to detail and determination to make the best product possible has certainly paid off. In six short years, Harney Lane Winery has developed a portfolio of unique, memorable estate varietals including Old Vine Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Primitivo, Petite Sirah, and Albariño—along with classic Chardonnay. Judging from the rapid growth of its wine club, Wine:30, and the fact that nearly all (95 percent or more) of its inventory is sold in the tasting room, Harney Lane has quickly developed an enthusiastic and loyal following. The wines consistently stand out at major wine competitions. Their current release of Tempranillo, the 2012 vintage, has been awarded Best of Class, Double Gold at both the 2015 SF Chronicle Wine Competition and the 2015 SF International Wine Competition. The gracious tasting room offers tastes of the winery’s compelling portfolio, as well as a gift shop stocked with creative wine-related gifts. Harney Lane prides itself in not only producing wonderful wines but in creating a tasting experience where guests feel warm, welcome, and an extended part of the family. They are open for tasting Thursday through Monday from 11am to 5pm. FOR MORE INFORMATION: HARNEY

VAN RUITEN Winery In 1999, the Van Ruiten family brought their first fruit into the winery with an uncompromising commitment to making award-winning wines. With a history of awards, including new accolades from the Wine Enthusiast Magazine, their mission has remained the same today as the 2015 harvest is in full swing. Every bin of grapes brought into their state-of-the-art facility is carefully selected by family growers and hand-picked to ensure optimum quality and flavor. From the fields to the winery, two generations of family members take pride in a hands-on approach to growing grapes, producing top-quality wines, and serving customers in their Tuscan-inspired tasting room. As harvest brings forth the fruits of their year-long labor, the Van Ruiten Winery has exciting news. For years, loyal customers have been asking for the addition of a sparkling wine. With much excitement, the family released their Reserve Sparkling Cuvée in August, and it is receiving rave reviews. They are anticipating the release of a Reserve Sparkling Rosé at the end of 2015. New to their tasting room are the 2012 Reserves: Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignane and Merlot. For the first time, the family harvested Malbec grapes, which will fit nicely into the Van Ruiten’s impressive wine portfolio. Van Ruiten Family Winery recently launched a new website, www.vrwinery.com , and has reorganized their Wine Club. They continue to offer Sunday Music on their vine-covered patio through October 18th, as well as, other exciting wine-related events. Just as the family celebrates each harvest, they also look forward to welcoming old and new customers to their beautiful tasting room in the flourishing Lodi Wine Region. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

MACCHIA Winery Located in Lodi's wine country, Macchia prides themselves on making the best wine for the best price. Specializing in Zinfandels and Italians, the well balanced, big and bold flavors that fill their bottles are often award-winning. Owners, Tim and Lani Holdener, passionately submerge themselves in every aspect of their business. As Tim creates each wine, Lani develops a perfect environment for each sip. Embodying their Italian name, Macchia, (“the spot”) their winery and wine club mirrors the bold and beautiful characteristics of their product. “My husband is just great at what he does,” smiles Lani. And others agree. Macchia’s wine cellar is basically a trophy case. This year, the 2013 Sangiovese won the gold for "Best of class of Region" at the California State Fair, along with another gold for their 2013 old vine zindandel, "Mischievious." KLINKER BRICK Winery Established in 2000, Klinker Brick Winery began as a home-office operation with Steve & Lori Felten at the helm. Before that and without any pre-conceived plans to open a winery, the Feltens realized that they could create and produce something special from the quality juice which they were, at the time, selling off to other reputable wineries. What began as an idea, materialized into a forty-four state distribution schedule as well as a delightfully rustic and rural tasting room which was founded in 2010. Klinker Brick is growing in popularity and favoritism with the public. In 2015, their 2013 Farrah Syrah won a double gold at both the California State Fair and the El Dorado County Fair. Their 2012 Marisa Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel also won a double gold this year at the San Francisco International Wine Competition. These are just some of the many awards the winery has won. Klinker Brick continues to produce high quality wines including a drystyle rosé, syrah, and their flagship zinfandel.

FALL COLORS
FALLColorsTOUR: BY DON AND ANN JACKSON
Maine and Canada's Eastern Provinces Always more to explore For nearly twenty years we talked about doing a Fall colors tour to New England, placed it on our bucket list but for a variety of reasons just kept postponing. Finally this past Fall season we finally got our act together, put it onto our travel schedule and opted for a late September time period. Although Fall color tours are 48

offered by numerous luxury bus firms and coastal cruise lines we opted for renting a car and doing it on our own. And that was a great decision. We started the trip by flying into Boston, renting a car and immediately heading north and here’s our recommended itinerary.
Kennebunkport and Portland, Maine:
Boston directly to Portland can be a short two hour drive but we recommend you take an extra couple of hours and head to the coast to visit Kennebunkport. This very quaint and famous ocean front town is easy to walk and known for the coastal estate home of former President
Casco Bay. www.portlanddiscovery.com Another choice dining pick is Walters, a local foodie favorite. www.waltersportland.com For tons of info on Maine’s premier city visit: www. visitportland.com
Pineland
Farms,
Maine:
After leaving Portland head about a half hour northwest to one of the state’s most beautiful settings at Pineland Farms where the fall colors were incredible. This former campus has been converted into a travel destination and unique twist on a farm stay, plus an exceptional meeting and recreational venue. Pineland’s distinctive development is one of those unique locations for family getaways, romantic escapes, small group meetings, and reunions. Special features include: historic home choices for lodging; jogging/ cross country skiing/snowshoeing/sledding/mountain biking trails; tennis courts; country market/deli; orienteering; and more. Educational visits to their creamery, home to award winning cheeses, and their world class Equestrian Center, specializing in Olympic dressage training, are other hallmarks. George Bush and first lady Barbara. Although not open to the public the Bush compound is worth a few minutes drive to view their gorgeous seaside setting. As you next head to Maine’s biggest city of Portland we recommend staying in nearby Cape Elizabeth where checking into the gorgeous Inn by the Sea is a no brainer. This lovely resort boutique-like property offers a state-ofthe-art spa, beautiful accommodations, and an ocean front setting offering wonderful beach walks. Their Sea Glass restaurant, serving up sustainable seafood in creative presentations, was a culinary highlight of the trip. www.innbythesea. com And don’t miss seeing the famous Portland Headlight, one of our country’s most photographed lighthouses, and taking a city of Portland trolley tour and a harbor cruise on the picturesque
Maine Coast on the way to New Brunswick Province, Canada
After leaving Pineland head due east back to Maine’s dramatic coast, in constant contact with a multitude of fall colorizations, and be sure to stop and stroll the quaint seaside towns of Camden and Rockport. Drive on to Bar Harbor and don’t miss a hike into Acadia National Park for more fall color splendor. Next drive on to the Canadian border of New Brunswick Province at Lubec and take the International Bridge over to Campobello Island. This historic island is home to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park, the only park in the world

Grand Manan Island by ferry from Black’s Harbor, is one of the Maritime Province’s favorite vacation spots and our recommended succeeding layover when leaving St. Andrews and heading further north on the beautiful New Brunswick coast. Try booking a room with Inn at Whale Cove Cottages where the chef/owner is well known for her gastronomic creations. Hiking the coastline in and around the island’s lighthouses is our number one recommended outing on Manan. www. whalecovecottages.ca Your next destination should be Saint John, Canada’s oldest incorporated city and a vibrant walkable downtown on the edge of the Bay of Fundy, home to the world’s highest and lowest tides. Our stay at the local Hilton Saint John was a great choice and their bellman’s recommendation to go to Rocky’s Sports Bar so we could catch the television broadcast of our favorite pro sports team proved memorable. After leaving New Brunswick we headed for a short two day visit to explore this other Maritime Canadian Province. On the drive to the capital city of Halifax overlooking the Atlantic Ocean we had wonderful stops at the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park, an amazing sanctuary, and the Anne Murray Centre museum in Springhill to learn more about one of our alltime favorite singers. While in Halifax we stayed at the classic boutique style Halliburton House Inn with delightful complimentary breakfasts and an ideal location to walk the downtown and the wharf area. And be sure to stroll the Public Gardens and then on to Citadel park for great
Island:
Also known as PEI, this Maritime Province is reached by heading back to Port Elgin in New Brunswick and taking the Confederation Bridge to reach the island. This curved 8 mile long bridge is the longest in the world crossing ice-covered water in winter seasons and endures as one of Canada’s preeminent engineering achievements of the 20th century. You’ll definitely need to start your visit at the capital city of Charlottetown. If you can book a room at the Great George Hotel you’ll love the choice as it’s close to the walk-able downtown and provides first rate accommodations, complimentary breakfast buffets, fresh yummy afternoon cookies and evening drinks. Award winning Terre Rouge Bistro Marche on Queen Street provided an excellent dining choice. Be sure to visit nearby PEI National Park, the beautiful coastal beaches, Green Gables Heritage Place, the Farmer’s Market, the Dunes Gallery & Gardens, and time permitting drop in for lunch at the very popular PEI Preserve Company-much more than a preserves business. Heritage Place is the home that inspired the famous bookAnne of Green Gables. PEI is one of the favorite getaways for Canadian citizens and is becoming more popular with stateside folks, as well. For much more information and to watch a beautiful 10 minute video tour of this glorious island go to: www.tourismpei.com 1-Try to allow at least two weeks for this trip to fully experience all there is to offer in spectacular Fall colors and Atlantic coastal splendors. 2-Be sure to dine often on the Maine and Canadian coastal lobsters, considered by many as the best in the world. Some folks have strong convictions as to which of the two are best. Not us. We loved them both equally.

DINING OUT WITH NICK something I have heard of, seen, tasted, experienced before? Or is that bottle a very run of the mill Sauvignon Blanc or house chardonnay that betrays a very boring list? • Now I go to the top. What is the most expensive wine on the list? Does it carry good value and command the top dollar? Or does it just have name recognition? In most cases it’s the latter of the two and for good reason. Most people will not purchase an expensive bottle they have never heard of. This is why names like “Silver Oak” and “Frank Family” dominate the tops of most neighborhood restaurant lists. A bottle of “Sea Smoke,” “Dominus” or “Diamond Creek” could sit there for years eating up a restaurants cash flow. Instead they load the top with bottles that they know are easily recognizable and will move quickly.

THE WINE LIST CODE
NICK DEDIER

As a “restaurant guy” whenever I am out to dinner (which isn’t often since I’m always at work), we sit down at a table and someone immediately hands me the wine list. Nonchalantly they notify me that I am the one who should be choosing wine for the table. They pass the book over like it is a Rubik’s cube with a detonation device. When this first started happening, I was baffled by it; I was a 26 year old restaurant greenhorn and I was choosing wines for family, friends and colleagues. Four years prior I was a bartender at an Applebee’s and now due to some schooling and being knocked around by some hard core French chefs, maitre
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2015
d’s and sommeliers, I was being ordained by the table as the only one who could properly bless the table with the perfect bottle. I’m not going to lie. Wine lists can be tricky. Hell, to this day they are still more than a little daunting. It’s a lot of social (and wallet) pressure to produce good juice for your table. Yet there are ways to make it easier on yourself and to casually look like a judge searching for best in show. • The first thing you need to know is that restaurants mark up their wines. Needing to turn a profit is an unfortunate necessity of business. I know it sounds strange but the $20 retail bottle you see in the grocery store can easily go for twice that on a restaurant list. All that staff, training, china, glassware and general pomp and circumstance that makes your favorite restaurant so appealing is very expensive. You cannot look at a restaurant wine list and begin judging it against prices from “Bev-Mo.” Apples and oranges. • I start at the bottom. What that means is I search for the most inexpensive bottle of wine and judge it accordingly. Is their $25-30 bottle of
• If the inexpensive wine is something I haven’t heard of before and the more expensive wine is easily recognizable, then I’ll generally make my selections from the first third of the restaurants price range. These are usually bottles that a purveyor or producer has impressed the beverage manager with in the areas of both price and quality. • If, on the entire list, I can’t seem to find a wine that I like I will go into “worst case scenario survival” mode. I gravitate, again, to the bottom half of the price range and select grape varietals that are both crowd pleasers and are easy to make. Some wines (pinot noirs, chardonnays, merlots, etc.) are very difficult to make correctly (lots of people make them poorly). However there are some wines that are generally good across the board and these make checking down on a wine list less terrifying. • General crowd pleasers from lightest to fullest in body are: Dry rosés, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache, Barbera and Syrah. If you aren’t confident with any wine on the list, then these are great defaults and offer something for everyone. • As a last resort if you, as the table’s chosen wine leader, cannot find something you like, then feel free to ask your server what they think or ask them to bring over the restaurant manager and discuss the selection with them. No doubt, wine lists are daunting but with a little practice and some patience you can look like Robert Parker, pick a great bottle and hopefully do so on a budget.

NELLO OLIVO Wines & Rancho Olivio Vineyards BY LAUREN CLIFFORD
The beautiful and spacious twenty-one acre land known as Rancho Olivo Vineyards is located within the boundaries of Cameron Park. This vineyard is owned and operated by Nello and Danica Olivo and home to the lovely and local brand, Nello Olivo Wines. With a name surely fitting, Nello restored this property to its former glory in 2000 and expanded the vineyard into a wine lovers dream with a tasting room just minutes away and now an iconic and successful wine brand to match. The tasting room and ultimate introduction to Olivo’s fine wines is only about fifteen minutes from the vineyard located at the historic Bee Bennet House in Placerville, which is a landmark dating back to the late 1800’s. The land the vineyard is located on itself inherits a huge part of California’s past. This property was once used during the good ol’ Gold Rush Days as Bennett Winery; one of the earliest wineries in California. It also suffered but somehow survived the prohibition era, in which most of its 58
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2015
vines were destroyed alongside the original stone building. As if that’s not interesting enough, there is also a sustainable amount of evidence that Native Americans once camped out on the vineyards land, and some natural found artifacts are even still used at the winery today. Nello’s primary goal was to provide and sell grapes to local wineries and to continue to satisfy his winemaking hobby, however he greatly surpassed this by creating his own award winning brand and running not only a successful vineyard and wine tasting room, but a successful business. Nello takes great pride in what he does, and it definitely shows. They custom crush their grapes and chose to grow old-world style grapes, which are commonly found in regions of Italy. Since Nello’s ancestral home is in fact located in a region of Italy, as a second generation ItalianAmerican with the love for winemaking flowing through his veins, this choice seemed only fitting. Coincidentally enough, the Sierra-Foothills climate
in which the vineyard lies has several types of soils which make for a variety of grapes and flavors that thrive in this area. Not only does this vineyard produce award winning wine, but they even hold creative events such as; poetry readings every third Sunday and dinners in their old historic wine-cellar. Give the tasting room a visit and enjoy a glass or a bottle of awarding winning wine all the while experiencing firsthand a piece of California’s past. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

LO C AL LO D I WI NES THIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL LODI WINERIES.
Heritage Oak WINERY BY LAUREN CLIFFORD
Located on one hundred and six acres of luscious land, just east of the lovely town of Lodi, resides Heritage Oak Winery. Heritage Oak Winery is not only filled with grand stories of generational history but it is also surrounded by local beauty; as it lies close against the Mokelumne River and its inherited family of wildlife. This winery sits atop land that has been in current owner, vineyard manager, and winemaker, Tom Hoffman’s family for about one hundred and fifty years. Tom is actually the fifth generation of farmers to tend the same land that his great-great grandfather James Christian settled on around 1853. 60
The grape growing business is definitely something that runs in the family, as the family started growing Tokay grapes on their farm in the early 1900’s exactly where the winery stands today. Tom took over the land and managed the vineyards in 1982 after his adventures in South America where he taught and met his wife and coowner of the winery, Carmela. During these years Tom fulfilled his passion for wine making by growing a wider variety of grapes and continuing the family business. The winery itself was built in 2007 and today the vineyard carries about twentyfive different varieties to choose from,
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2015
some of which are crafted with less commonly known grapes that make for a unique flavor. With so much history and experience with growing agriculture, it’s no wonder that this winery produces such high quality grapes and such rich and smoothly textured wines. Common wines that can be found here are classics such as Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, all carefully harvested to perfection. A recommended wine would be the 2012 Grenache, which is a light and fragrant wine perfect for those warm afternoons. Not only does this winery offer spacious tasting rooms where guests can sip on their choice of delectable wines, this winery also takes advantage of its natural surrounding habitat. They developed a hiking trail down the secluded Mokelumne beach where guests can either enjoy the beautiful scenery before them or even have a nice little picnic. They also have a wildlife sanctuary and give guests the option to go bird watching or even fishing. This vineyard produces amazing wines all the while offering guests a multitude of activities to enjoy and enrich their experience. So whether you choose to hike a trail, wander around the vineyard, or fish in the river, just remember to savor and appreciate the flavors of the land you’re on by joining the family in the tasting room. SEASON DELIGHT GRAPES
Grapes
BY SERENA PIPER
SEASON DELIGHT
In many cultures, grapes are known as “the queen of fruits,” probably because there are more than 8,000 varieties of grapes worldwide, including blue, green, purple, and even black. In ancient times, grapes were thought to have healing properties, which we can now confirm as we’ve learned grapes contain the cancer-fighting substance Caffeic acid 62
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2015
and aid in reducing the risk of heart attacks, asthma, and migraines. According to the Agricultural Marketing Resource Center, the U.S. imports more than 500,000 tons of grapes per year. High in vitamins K and C (both good for building strong bones and tissue) and low in calories, grapes are a go-to when it comes to fruit salads, light
snacks, and of course, wine. They’re also 80% water - perfect for keeping hydrated! Normally eaten plain from a bowl on the table, the super fruit makes a tasty, tart mix-in for other meals. From pilafs and sorbets, to pies and salads, the recipes are endless when it comes to grapes. Mix things up at dinner this week and try one of these recipes!
Grape CRISP INGREDIENTS
1 bag green grapes • 2 to 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon fine salt 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar • 1/2 cup uncooked rolled oats 1/3 cup all-purpose flour • 4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter (1/2 stick), cut into small pieces, plus more for coating the dish INSTRUCTIONS
Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat 8x8 baking dish with butter. Combine grapes, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon of salt in large bowl and toss to coat. Place grape mixture in prepared baking dish and set aside. Using the same bowl as the grapes, mix together brown sugar, oats, flour, and remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt until evenly combined. With your fingertips, blend in the butter pieces until small clumps form and butter is well incorporated, about 2 minutes. Sprinkle topping evenly over grapes and bake until streusel is crispy and grapes are tender, about 50 to 60 minutes. Let cool at least 30 minutes before serving. (source: chow.com)

Fall
FASHION Faux Pas BY KELSEY WEHSELS
The temperatures are starting to dip, and with every new season comes new fashion rules, and fall is no exception. However, there are some simple mistakes that we all make when we update our looks for the cooler weather. Here are some ideas to keep you from committing fashion faux pas this season.
UPDATE
Pulling out the cooler weather clothes from storage is a good idea, but not everything is back in style. Just because it was a trend last season, doesn’t mean it is this season. Take a peek at what’s trending and update some of your items. It doesn’t need to be a whole wardrobe makeover, just an update to pieces you already have.
BACK to BASICS
When it comes to updating your wardrobe for any new season, it is always important to keep to basics. For fall, a pair of skinny jeans, a solid-colored long sleeve tee, or a simple black cardigan is all you need. Maintaining these essentials will make it easier to build on your wardrobe.
STUCK in SUMMER
It can be difficult to let go of summer. Laying by the pool or out on a beach is a simply satisfying scene to enjoy. But it’s time to step out of the summer clothes and into some warmer ones. Put down the sundresses and beach cover ups, and pick up the jeans and scarves. Also, keep in mind that summer clothing tends to be lighter cotton blends that won’t fare well against the chilly weather. Try getting clothing with heavier fabrics such as wool and thicker cotton blends.
FOOTWEAR
Yes, your feet don’t seem to want to leave summer either, and with that awesome pedicure, it can be difficult to put away the flip flops and sandals. However, it’s time to pack away the bright, floral sandals and put on the flats and boots. If the weather is still a little warm, try neutral-colored footwear like black or tan sandals to keep to the color theme of fall.
WHITE Out
The ultimate “Don’t Wear White After Labor Day” debate is still being had. I’ve never truly been a fan of that rule. However, there is a way around it. Instead of wearing stark white, opt for ivory or winter whites instead. If you choose that route, make sure to wear darker colors to tone down the light color.
TIGHTS?
Yes, you used to wear tights when you were younger, and maybe not too long ago. While some stores insist they are still trending, it isn’t. They have become the panty hose of their time. Not to say all tights were created equally. There are still some that work great with outfits. If you decide on a pair of tights, don’t select any bright or vivid colors. A simple pair of black patterned tights or solid black tights will go with almost any outfit. And of course, before you put your tights on, make sure they’re not ripped. Talk about a fashion faux pas.
