Last Halloween, we had a nor’easter sweep through New England that took down a huge tree in our yard. Approximately 80×80 feet, the tree was a rarity on Cape Cod, where early settlers cleared the land centuries ago and big storms now come through with increasing regularity. Our silver maple even made the front page of the local paper along with our neighbor’s 250-year-old Siberian elm that split in the same microburst. It’s painful for us and our neighbors to lose these grand beings, but as with most things beyond my control, I’m trying to manage my disappointment by looking on the bright side. Luckily for both our neighbor and us, the trees did not damage our houses. Our tree, which we think was planted in the early 1930s, was already a worry to me. My friend Susan, who really knows trees, gave me a warning when she visited: “Silver maples don’t live that long, and they’re notoriously shallow-rooted.” Ours came down gracefully, falling beside the house and into the backyard, her outer branches lightly resting on the gutters without making even a dent. The only things destroyed were inexpensive Adirondack chairs. “You dodged a bullet,” people commented on Instagram when I posted a photo of the damage. Others remarked that at 90-plus years old, our tree would become diseased at some point soon and need to be removed, likely drawing the ire of the surrounding community. Like the Lorax, most people love trees. For now, the tree is lying peacefully in the yard waiting to be cut up and removed by a local woodworker who wants to create furniture out of it (we’ll get a credit for a table). But destruction can lead to rebirth, so our plan is to use the now sunny space for a kitchen garden. Though I know I’ll miss the shade of that grand tree during the heat of summer, I’m going to enjoy sampling homegrown tomatoes (while having an intact home in which to eat them). The fi rst job at hand is to fi nd a spot well away from the house to put in a replacement specimen tree. Planting a tree is a living symbol of optimism, so I’m looking for something that will grow fairly quickly, have a sturdy root system to weather the storms, support local wildlife, and provide STEPHEN ORR, a few seasons of interest with flowers or fall Editor in Chief instagram @steporr color. Over the years we’ve published 171 pancake recipes, 107 mentions of “griddle,” 12 “flapjacks,” 10 ideas for camping pancakes, and 2 suggestions of pancakes for “husky plaid-shirt breakfasts” (left). In 1950 we offered this tasty syrup sub: Mix 1 cup honey with ¹∕4 cup melted butter; add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg to taste. In 1972 we put sourdough starter to use in pancakes. And in 1930 we went Russian-style: Wrap thin cakes around cottage cheese and serve with jam. Mark your 2022 calendars: National Pancake Day is March 1. wash this way It may seem like the most basic step in your routine, but washing your face correctly is the foundation for healthy skin. Skip it and you’re likely to see dullness or clogged pores. Do it wrong—say, with a tooaggressive cleanser— and you might break down your skin barrier, cause dryness and inflammation, and even accelerate aging, says board-certified New York City dermatologist Dina Strachan, M.D. Brush up on the dermapproved steps that will help (not harm) your skin.
Do you need a tool? Fingers work just fine to massage cleanser into your skin, although you can use
a brush as long as you keep the pressure light and don’t scrub. And if you prefer a washcloth or cleansing pad, always grab a fresh one to avoid exposing your face to bacteria, Strachan says. Set the tap to warm (not hot) water. The whole cleansing process should take anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds, says Pennsylvania-based dermatologist Susan C. Taylor, M.D., founder of the Skin of Color Society. Don’t spend much longer on this step, as there is such a thing as overwashing the skin, which can lead to dryness.

EVERYDAY CLEANSING WHEN TO WASH
A nighttime cleanse before bed is essential to remove environmental pollutants, dirt, and dead skin (not to mention giving your cream or serum a fighting chance). This may be the only daily wash your skin needs. “A lot of times you can just rinse your face with water in the morning if you are not particularly oily,” says cosmetic chemist Ginger King. ■
WHAT TO USE
For most skin types (balanced to dry or sensitive), a mild, moisturizing cleanser removes dirt without overdrying or causing irritation. Moisturizing cleansers typically contain humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid— ingredients that attract water. Find both in Eucerin Hydrating Cleansing Gel ($11; cvs.com).
For skin that’s especially dry or sensitive, use a wash that also includes emollients to hold in water, Strachan suggests. La RochePosay Toleriane Gentle Cleanser ($15; laroche-posay.us) has ceramides and glycerin, and is extra gentle for delicate or dehydrated skin. If you love a bar, choose one that isn’t actually a soap, which can strip oils from the skin, Strachan says. Try Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar ($3; target.com). Bonus: This derm-approved bar works for the face and body. ■
KEEP IN MIND
when to
EXFOLIATE
Treatment cleansers with exfoliating salicylic or glycolic acids are helpful for unclogging pores and smoothing away dead skin, but they can also trigger irritation. Be mindful: Look for a lowconcentration wash, use it no more than once a day (or every other night), and skip scrubs or other exfoliants, Strachan says. For oily skin or acne, Taylor likes the .5% salicylic acid in Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser ($7; target.com). If you prefer a glycolic wash, Dermalogica Daily Glycolic Cleanser ($35; dermalogica .com) combines skin conditioners with a gentle amount (3%) of the acid.
Hydrating cleansers won’t leave your skin feeling “squeaky” clean, and that’s a good thing. “Ideally, we have some of our own natural oils on the surface to help retain water,” Strachan says.

Prefab pine cabinets and painted plywood fl oors set a neutral backdrop for her creative pursuits. “There’s a lot of texture and color coming from outside,” she says. “And my work is so colorful, it’s nice to keep everything else calm.”
ZONED OUT Since the windows don’t open, Elizabeth positioned a door on either side of the building for cross ventilation. A signifi cant portion of fl oor space is dedicated to her
worktable, which is situated by the window that affords the best soft light for photographing pieces for her online shop and Instagram. Bulky items like her serger and sewing machine and fabric samples hide in large boxes under the table. Her dog, Starlight, likes to be close by and has a zone all to herself.

DESIGN ON A BUDGET A few smart solutions, such as using easierto-install stationary windows and stock-size doors, kept the budget at $14,000. To get the look of concrete floors for less, Elizabeth painted plywood a matte gray. Low-cost exterior T1-11 sheathing is available at any home store.
ROOM WITH A WOODSY VIEW The studio’s charcoal exterior paint helps the building recede into the woods, Elizabeth
says, “and makes the surrounding lush greens pop.” She slanted the roofline down slightly toward one side to manage runoff. The taller, 12-foot-high wall, with a stacked pair of windows, brings in natural light.
SHIPPING STATION A 22-inch-deep Ivar unit, opposite, bottom right, is roomy enough to house a printer, boxes, and packing papers. Elizabeth kept cabinets below counter height to take up less visual space. ■

t’s usually a laundry no-no to wash and dry your woolens the way you do towels, but that’s exactly how you create felted wool for crafting. When you wash a sweater or scarf in hot water and toss it in the dryer, the yarns will mat and turn into dense, easy-to-sew felted wool. Though wool blends may work, 100 percent wool is best. If you don’t have old wool clothing or blankets at home, check secondhand stores. Or buy felted wool as yardage or scraps at quilting shops or on Etsy. We also like wool felt, which is made from compressed, rather than woven, wool fibers. One of our favorite online sources for both is prairiewoolens.com.

These cute cutouts owe their color variation to roving—fluffy clumps of wool fiber that pull apart like cotton candy. TO MAKE ONE: Place a 4-inch square piece of felted wool on a needle felting mat. Swirl a small piece of roving on top. Press a needle felting tool up and down across the wool to blend in the roving for a marbled effect. Cut a simple shape from the finished piece, then use the felting tool to clean up the raw edges. Sew on a yarn loop. Hover your smartphone camera over the code, right, to watch our how-to video.

(Look for wool or a wool blend rather than crafts store felt, which is generally polyester.) Ground nut shells, found online and in crafts stores, fill the pincushions. Important facts about FANAPT® (iloperidone) tablets PURPOSE Fanapt® is a prescription medication used for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults. Deciding to look at alternate medications is something your health care provider may do. Your health care provider needs to consider that Fanapt® may change your heart rhythm (meaning there is more time between heartbeats). When taking other drugs that may cause this same change in heart rhythm, you are at a higher risk of a serious, even life-threatening medical issue (torsade de pointes), which may result in sudden death. In many cases, your health care provider may prescribe another medication like Fanapt® fi rst. ®
Fanapt needs to be taken as directed starting at a low dose and slowly increasing the strength. This may delay the control of symptoms in the first 1 to 2 weeks of treatment. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION BOXED WARNING: Elderly patients with psychosis related to dementia (having lost touch with reality due to memory loss and experiencing a decline in day-to-day functioning) who are treated with antipsychotic medications are at an increased risk of death compared to patients treated with a placebo. Fanapt® is not approved for use in people with dementia-related psychosis.
Patients should not use Fanapt® if they have a known allergy to Fanapt® or its ingredients. Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, rapid swelling of the skin (angioedema), and other symptoms of allergy (e.g., throat tightness; swelling of the throat, face, lips, mouth and tongue; hives; rash; and itching) have been reported. An increased risk of stroke has been reported in clinical studies of elderly people with dementiarelated psychosis. Fanapt® is not approved for use in people with dementia-related psychosis. Fanapt® may change your heart rhythm (meaning there is more time between heartbeats). Heart rhythm changes have occurred in patients taking Fanapt® and are a risk factor for serious, even life-threatening medical issues. You should tell your health care provider if you have or have had heart problems. Contact your health care provider right away if you feel faint or have unpleasant feelings of irregular or forceful heartbeats as any of these feelings could be a sign of a rare, but serious side effect that could be fatal. You should not use Fanapt® with other drugs that are known to cause these same heart rhythm issues. Tell your health care provider if you have some or all of the following symptoms: very high fever, rigid muscles, shaking, confusion, sweating or increased
heart rate and blood pressure. These may be signs of a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a rare but serious side effect that could be fatal. This may happen with Fanapt® or drugs like it. Abnormal or uncontrollable movements of the face, tongue, or other parts of the body may be signs of a serious condition called tardive dyskinesia (TD), which could become permanent. The chance of this condition going away decreases, depending on how long and how much medication has been taken. Tell your health care provider if you have body movements you can’t control. Fanapt® and medicines like it have been associated with metabolic changes (high blood sugar, high cholesterol and triglycerides, and weight gain) that can increase cardiovascular/cerebrovascular risks. Tell your health care provider if you have diabetes or risk factors for diabetes (for example, obesity, family history of diabetes), or if you have unexpected increases in thirst, urination, or hunger. If so, your blood sugar should be monitored. Increases in blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia), which in some cases can be serious and associated with coma or death, have been reported in patients taking Fanapt® and medicines like it. Changes in cholesterol and triglycerides have been seen in patients taking Fanapt® and medicines like it. Check with your health care provider while on treatment. Some patients may gain weight while taking Fanapt.® Your health care provider should check your weight regularly. Tell your health care provider about any medical conditions that you have including problems with your liver. Fanapt® is not recommended for patients with severe liver problems. Tell your health care provider if you have a history of or have a condition that may increase your risk for seizures before you begin taking Fanapt.® Light-headedness or faintness caused by a sudden change in heart rate and blood pressure when rising quickly from a sitting or lying position (orthostatic hypotension) has been reported with Fanapt.® This condition is most common when you start therapy, when restarting treatment, or when the dose of Fanapt® is increased. You should consult your health care provider if you have or have had heart problems or conditions that lead to these sudden changes since Fanapt® should be used with caution in these patients.

Some (including fatal) cases of agranulocytosis, a serious decrease in specific types of WBCs called neutrophils or granulocytes, have been reported in drugs like Fanapt.® Fanapt® can increase the level of the hormone prolactin. Tell your health care provider if you experience breast enlargement, breast pain, or breast discharge, abnormal menstrual cycles in females or impotence in males. If elevated levels of prolactin persist, this may lead to bone loss. Medicines like Fanapt® can impact your body’s ability to reduce your body temperature. You should avoid overheating and dehydration. Fanapt® and medicines like it have been associated with swallowing problems (dysphagia). If you have or have had swallowing problems, you should tell your health care provider. As with many conditions that affect the way you think or feel, thoughts of suicide may occur. If you get these feelings, seek help immediately from your health care provider, or local emergency room. For males, in the rare event you have a painful or prolonged erection (priapism), lasting 4 or more hours, stop using Fanapt® and seek immediate medical attention. Fanapt® and medicines like it can affect your judgment, thinking, or motor skills. You should not drive or operate hazardous machinery, including automobiles, until you know how Fanapt® affects you. THE SWEEP Start in one corner of a room and work your way around the space in a circle, editing one small part at a time until you’ve completed the entire room. In a bedroom, you might edit the dresser top first, then the drawers, then the pile of stuff in the corner, and so on, until you have touched every item and made decisions about what stays and what goes. This method yields great results even if you’re short on time and ensures that you don’t bite off more than you can chew.
ONE CATEGORY AT A TIME You still work one room at a time, but you’ll edit by category instead of location. If you’re editing your home office, start with a paper overhaul, then round up all of your electronics, then move on to office supplies, and later books. This approach gives you the chance to get a realistic sense of volume (“How do I have 127 pens?”) and to determine your ideal number in any given category.

To turn a corner of their game room into a well-stocked bar, a creative couple built a wine rack, countertop, and even stemware holders—all from off-the-shelf lumber.
r
ather than fight or ignore the clipped ceiling in their Cary, NC, game room, Zoe and Andrew Hunt took a different angle. They used the ceiling slant to their advantage, building in a bar unit that’s a perfect fit. The wine rack shelves were tricky, Andrew admits. “Our walls are not close to square, and we learned that the hard way,” he says. “Each shelf ended up being a slightly different shape and size to fit into the space.” Their math skills and diligence paid off. “The matching slant makes the rack feel like it was always meant to be there,” Zoe says. The couple bought the base cabinet at a home center and adapted it to accommodate the beverage cooler. They made a countertop and floating shelves from pine boards they burned with a plumbers torch to accent the grain. “It created a unique look that you just can’t get with stains or paints,” Andrew says. Including the fridge, this bar cost about $450 to build.

Three boards secured with glue and pocket holes along their long edges form the countertop. After sanding the top and practicing their burning technique on scrap wood, Zoe and Andrew scorched the grain by moving the plumbers torch back and forth, working in
sections and keeping the flame about 6 inches from the surface. After the wood cooled, they sealed it with spar urethane, a sealer often used on boats.

or many, a flight to the U.S. Virgin Islands signals the start of vacation, but for me, it’s a reunion where I see my extended family. I spend time enjoying the vistas, soaking up the warm Caribbean sun, and eating as many patés as I can. Patés are an excellent snack you find at food trucks and stands in St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. Golden and warm, the pockets of fried dough are often filled with saltfish, beef, or even tuna or chicken stewed with spices and tomato. The best shops sell out, meaning you have to get there early. I learned how to make paté dough from my grandmother and always join in when I’m back in USVI and a cousin or great-aunt is making patés and johnny cakes. When I’m home in New Jersey, I make my own version of patés using ground lamb spiced with Scotch bonnets and turmeric. The setting is decidedly less tropical, but it still makes me feel like I’m in St. Thomas surrounded by my family whenever I take a bite.

1. For dough: In a bowl whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and 1 tsp. salt. Add butter cubes and use your

2. Add ¾ cup room temperature water to the bowl in a steady stream, using a spoon to mix the flour and turning it over on itself until the mixture becomes a craggy dough. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead 5 minutes until dough is a smooth ball that springs back when pushed. Let dough rest, covered with a kitchen towel or damp paper towel, 30 minutes. 4. While dough is resting, make the filling: In a medium saucepan heat 3 Tbsp. olive oil over medium. Once shimmering, add onion and sauté until translucent. Add ginger and garlic; sauté 3 minutes until fragrant. Add lamb to the saucepan and brown with the aromatics, using a wooden spoon to break apart large pieces. Sprinkle with Creole seasoning and turmeric; stir and cook 5 minutes to let the spices bloom. 5. Add thyme sprigs and tomato paste; stir to coat meat. Add 1 tsp. Caribbean hot sauce (if using), Scotch bonnet, and ½ cup water. Let simmer 10 minutes over medium until most of the water has evaporated. (If you want lots of heat, break open the pepper while it stews.) 6. Remove from heat and season to taste with salt and ground black pepper. Remove Scotch bonnet and thyme sprigs; let mixture cool 15 minutes.
8. Spoon approximately 2½ Tbsp. of the lamb filling onto the rolled dough. Using a pastry brush dipped in water, dampen the bottom edge of the oval. Fold top half down to align with bottom edge. Use a fork to press the two edges together to seal. Repeat with remaining dough and filling.

It’s Kris Jurik’s favorite moment when, in early March in her garden in Ames, IA, “Lo and behold, up come all my hellebores and the show begins,” she says. The late-winter and early-spring bloom time of hellebores, particularly the showy type known as Lenten roses, makes them a favorite of gardeners. So does the allure of their delicate, cup-shape flowers that resemble roses (the name “Lenten roses” also comes from their bloom time near Lent). In recent years, plant breeders have responded to increased demand from home gardeners by producing ever-more-interesting hybrids ranging from deep purple doubles to dusty peach-color flowers. But what clinches hellebores’ status as garden all-stars is how undemanding they are. They thrive in dappled shade, need little water, and go almost entirely unnoticed by deer. “You don’t have to fuss with the plants,” says Kris, who first planted hellebores in a shady patch of her garden about 10 years ago and quickly became a collector. She grows hundreds of them now, most in a hillside bed above a garden path, so she can look up into the gently bowing faces of the flowers as she walks by. The flower colors change subtly as the season progresses, “and that’s a good thing,” she says. “It adds to their charm.”

DINING ROOM Emily Kirschner is a self-proclaimed vintage-lover and is, as she puts it, “Facebook Marketplace obsessed.” Her husband, Dan, meanwhile, favors more modern design. They define their combined look as Parisian: A mix of antiques from different eras and styles layered over their home’s elegant architecture. To help their collections feel united and establish flow between rooms, designer Megan Opel relied on a tight palette of creamy white, black, and taupe (introduced in the dining room rug and in brass, leather, and wood pieces).
When on the hunt for something particular, Opel tells local antiques dealers to keep an eye out. That’s how this 1930s toy store display case ended up here.

hen Emily and Dan Kirschner started their River Forest, IL, house hunt, they knew cookie-cutter wasn’t going to cut it. With its leaded-glass windows and original millwork, the 1880s Victorian they landed on is anything but. However, it was also painted tip to toe in shades of terracotta and didn’t fit the couple’s his-and-her dreams of super clean and modern (for Dan) and soulful, collected, and not too perfect (for Emily). To help them achieve their vision—and make sure the house was practical and comfortable for four kids and a dog—they turned to designer Megan Opel. “Emily didn’t want her house to look ‘instantly decorated,’” Opel says, “and she wasn’t in a hurry.” Over time, Opel helped curate the couple’s inspirations and collections, blending them against a house-wide base of creamy white paint, black accent pieces, and a few thoughtfully chosen, extra-durable pieces of contemporary furniture. “If every single thing is vintage, the house could look like an antiques store,” Opel says. Case in point, the dining room combo of an antique crystal chandelier, custom trestle table, and Eames dining chairs: something old, something new, something modern (and wipe-able too). A happy marriage indeed.
ENTRYWAY The whole house, including the original carved wood stair balusters, got a fresh coat of paint: Buttermilk from Restoration Hardware. “A very creamy white works well for an old home with high ceilings,” Opel says. “A brighter white would have looked sterile.” She paired an iconic Nelson platform bench with a tattered vintage Oushak rug to create a “cool tension” and peppered the stairwell with graphic black-and-white paintings.
When searching vintage rugs online, Opel chats with the seller to confirm a piece is vintage (not just vintage-style) and asks for extra photos or even videos of her picks.
FAMILY ROOM Opel specified sturdy new sofas (with stain-resistant fabric), rugs, and lighting so they would go the distance in the high-traffic family room. She mixed in a vintage marble-topped coffee table and a pair of ottomans she found on Etsy and had re-covered to coordinate with the new fireplace surround. Opel’s signature styling approach is on display along the mantel: an extra-tall antique mirror flanked by a vase of foliage and sculptural objects.

“For pillows, I like to splurge on designer fabrics,” Opel says, “then I buy zippers and welting online and bring all the supplies to my dry cleaner’s tailor to sew for about $25.”

This homey white bean casserole uses herbes de Provence, a French blend that often includes thyme, rosemary, lavender, basil, and savory or marjoram to flavor the stew. If you can’t find it in the spice section of your grocery store, look online or use Italian seasoning.
1. In a 4- to 6-qt. Dutch oven combine beans, 8 cups cold water, and 11/2 tsp. salt. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and let stand 1 hour; drain. Rinse beans with cold water; drain. Pour beans into a 6- to 7-qt. slow cooker. 2. In a 12-inch skillet heat 1 Tbsp. olive oil over medium-high. Add onions, celery, carrot, and herbes de Provence; cook about 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender, stirring frequently. Add garlic; cook and stir 1 minute. Add wine; simmer 1 minute or until nearly evaporated, stirring to scrape up browned bits on bottom of pan. Pour vegetable mixture over beans in cooker. Add broth and dried tomatoes; stir to combine. Cover and cook on high 4 to 41/2 hours or low 8 to 9 hours. 3. In a clean 12-inch skillet heat an additional 2 Tbsp. olive oil over mediumhigh. Add sausage; cook 3 minutes per side or until browned. If using low-heat setting for slow cooker, turn to high. Stir sausage into beans in cooker; cover and cook 30 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, add bread crumbs to the skillet. Cook over medium 4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, stirring frequently. Transfer to a small bowl.

powerful antidote, prompting the body to release feel-happy hormones called endorphins, which leave you better mentally equipped to handle tension, Ijioma says. Mindfulness techniques like meditation and yoga hold promise too. A 2020 study found that people who meditated frequently had a lower risk of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, and carotid artery disease compared with nonmeditators. This may be because mindfulness promotes slow, deep breathing and lowers cortisol levels. n

HEART SMART Certain breeds are at higher risk for heart issues. Ask your vet if your pet falls into that category.
UNDERSTAND THE CAUSES The most common cause of heart disease is age-related degenerative valve disease (in small breed
dogs) and adult-onset heart muscle disease (in larger breeds). Heartworm is another common cause, and it’s preventable, so make sure to give your cat and/or dog preventive medication, says Danielle Smith Laughlin, D.V.M., cardiologist at BluePearl Pet Hospital in Sandy Springs, GA. In cats, another common cause (but one you don’t have control over) is a hereditary condition called cardiomyopathy, which leads to the thickening of the heart muscle wall and can cause clots or congestive heart failure. Some nontraditional diets, including grainfree foods and foods containing ingredients like peas, lentils, and chickpeas, have been associated with heart muscle disease in dogs and even some cats, Laughlin says. Also, cats who aren’t getting enough of the essential amino acid taurine tend to be at high risk, says Sarah Machell, D.V.M., medical director of Vetster in Toronto. This deficiency can happen if a cat is fed a nontraditional diet and isn’t getting enough from a supplement. (Commercially formulated cat foods
have taurine added to prevent a deficiency.)
KNOW THE SYMPTOMS The biggest tip-off that your pet may have heart disease is faster breathing at rest. Breathing more than 30 to 35 times a minute while sleeping or having trouble breathing in general warrants a trip to the vet. Other symptoms include lethargy, weakness, and fainting. In dogs, you might also notice a progressive cough. In cats, you might see openmouthed breathing or panting, or a sudden inability to use one or more of their limbs (which can signal a blood clot). ■

Step one to protect your pet’s heart: Keep up with annual checkups. The vet should listen to your pet’s heart to check for abnormal sounds like a murmur, extra beats, or an irregular rhythm. If the vet hears anything suspicious or if your pet’s breed is predisposed to heart disease, they may also do X-rays to check the size of the heart and/ or an electrocardiogram. They may even refer you to an animal cardiologist. Besides the checkup, here’s what else you can do to safeguard your pet’s heart health.
