Julianne Moore I’ll cut to the chase: In person, Julianne Moore lives up to her glowing reputation; talented, smart and grounded are just a few words that come to mind. I caught up with the Oscar winner when she was in town for the Toronto International Film Festival, promoting her part in Suburbicon as well as her role as a spokesperson for L’Oréal Paris, a major sponsor of the festival. Upon my arrival at the interview, I was whisked away to a private room, where Moore darted over to greet me warmly, clad in a breathtaking silk organza little black Givenchy dress. With her glossy auburn hair and porcelain skin dusted with freckles, the 57-year-old is undeniably a natural beauty. Immediately, I knew this would be more casual conversation and less formal interview. I’ve heard there’s a kinship among redheads. Is that true? Redheads always say hello to each other. I made a friend in my yoga class because she has red hair. She came into class one time with her daughter [a redhead] and her son’s girlfriend, who also has red hair. So there we were, four people with bright-red hair in a yoga class. I said, “Who says we’re extinct?”

What advice have you given your kids to help them navigate their teens? I always say this about having kids: You realize that in every step of parenting, you’re just giving them bits of information to help them get to the next stage. You realize they haven’t had the life experiences or development to keep them in the cogent stage. It’s challenging, but with both of mine, I just try to be there, talk with them, guide them and give them as much freedom as they can handle at the time.

Why is representing a brand like L’Oréal Paris important to you? What I like about L’Oréal is it’s aspirational and available to everyone— it’s easy to acquire and it’s affordable. And inclusive, too; it’s a major beauty
brand that represents all ethnicities, all cultures and all age ranges, which I think is incredible and really unusual.

There’s a belief that fashion and beauty is hollow and even antifeminist. What’s your take on women celebrating style? It’s not something I think is antifeminist at all. I think feminism is treating each gender equally—being paid the same and being treated the same. It’s not how you decorate yourself. No one has to dress up, but we do! Is it societal? Well, I think we’re compelled to decorate ourselves and our environments because we enjoy it. Also, there’s obviously some kind of biological narrative to it; it’s a kind of communication to one another. It’s a way we signify who we are or what we like or where we’re from.

Your daughter, Liv Freundlich, was in J.Crew’s Fall 2017 presentation. How did that come about? I’m friends with Jenna Lyons [former creative director and president of J.Crew]; she wanted people who were different ages and who did different things for a living to model. Liv was cast as the “young teenager” and was thrilled to do it! It allowed Liv to have a great professional experience at the age of 14. I wanted that for her, to feel that sense of agency.

TAKE FREQUENT TECH BREAKS
INTERRUPT ADVERSE THOUGHT PATTERNS
Though easy access to smartphones and computers means we can solve most conundrums with the touch of a button, many apps are highly addictive and take time away from the things that really matter, such as family, friends and complex problem-solving that leads to personal growth. “These days, tech is in charge of us; we’re not in charge of it,” says leadership coach Ellen Petry Leanse, author of The Happiness Hack. To break the cycle, take a tech timeout at the start of every day and during social interactions.
“Negative thinking creates negative feelings,” says California-based corporate-culture consultant Larry Senn, author of The Mood Elevator. “And grateful thinking creates grateful feelings. If you can change your thoughts, you can change your life.” One easy tactic for transforming your mindset is to interrupt it. If you notice you’re bombarded by stressful thoughts, go for a walk, help someone with a problem or play with your pet and see if you feel your mood shift.

STAY CURIOUS When someone cuts you off during rush hour or a coworker argues with you during a presentation, it can suddenly seem like the world is out to get you. But feeling affronted and judgmental is a choice—and you can pick a different attitude. “Everybody is doing what makes sense to them based on their own thinking,” says Senn. “We don’t have to agree with it, but we can decide not to take it personally.” Instead, choose to be curious about the thought processes and circumstances that lead to a person’s actions, and while you’re at it, consider the underlying reasons for your reactions.
BUILD DEEPER IN-PERSON CONNECTIONS “The majority of the people I interact with in my work as a teacher and a coach say that the thing they want most is a sense of deeper connection,” says Leanse, who’s an instructor at California’s Stanford University. “They say things like, ‘I want to find my tribe’ or ‘I want to be with people I understand and who understand me.’ ” Building those connections is easier than you think. “It can be as simple as trying to engage with others by being curious about them and asking questions to understand more.” Try to follow this simple rule: Listen more than you talk.

It’s tough to have a positive mindset if you’re running on little sleep, no exercise and a steady diet of burgers and chocolate bars. “We know that when people get run down physically, they catch colds more easily,” says Senn. “When you get run down physically, you also catch moods more easily.” By ensuring that you maintain a healthy diet, engage in vigorous exercise and get adequate sleep, you’ll build resilience to life’s hardships—and you’ll probably feel better about yourself overall, which is another key component of positive thinking.
Spending quiet time focusing on breathing or completing guided meditations is one way to train your reactive mentality—the one that jumps to conclusions and is quick to react—to pause before acting and can promote greater emotional intelligence and a profound sense of calm. “It’s like weight lifting for the mind,” says Leanse. But if setting aside a specific chunk of time seems impossible right now, simply try to be more mindful in your day-to-day life. “Find moments to be reflective and pay attention to the ‘now’ as you navigate everyday tasks,” says Leanse. For instance, when you wash the dishes, focus on the temperature of the water, the smell of the soap and the feel of each item in your hands.

According to Senn—and a whole host of researchers— cultivating a perspective of gratitude is one of the best ways to tap into a happier life. To do so, keep a gratitude journal, take a few minutes each day to think of three things you’re grateful for or compliment other people to show appreciation. “If you want to be happier, forget the myth that achievements or acquisitions bring happiness,” says Senn. “Instead, focus on activities that will nourish gratitude for the blessings you’ve already been granted.”
Guilty pleasures like watching TV or checking social media reward our brains with quick spikes of dopamine, but they don’t offer a lasting sense of satisfaction in the same way that “completing projects, being creative, learning, working on long-term goals or doing routine tasks like weeding the garden will,” says Leanse. That’s not to say we should never enjoy a mindless distraction, but completing “deep work”— the things that actually matter to us as individuals— will provide far more happiness in the long run.

You will have hard days. That’s a given in life. But the occasional bad day or mood can’t hurt you if you press pause on rash actions (think yelling at a loved one or sending a snooty email). “Your thinking is unreliable in the lower mood states,” says Senn, meaning that you may not be able to think clearly if you’re anxious, angry, impatient or sad. “Don’t trust your feelings during lower mood states. Instead of acting on unreliable thinking, delay important conversations and decisions.”

Lykke (pronounced luu-kah) is the Danish word for happiness—a word that carries extra clout coming from a country repeatedly named in headlines and studies as the world’s happiest. So what makes Denmark more joyful than the rest of us? That’s being studied by a team at the Happiness Research Institute (a real place, we promise) in Copenhagen led by the CEO of happiness, Meik Wiking. He writes about it in The Little Book of Lykke: The Danish Search for the World’s Happiest People. Here are our top three takeaways.

I’m less interested in sex these days. Is there anything I can do about it?
Dr. Holzapfel says “Sexual concerns are common for both women and men, with decreased desire topping the list for women. Sexual issues can arise due to medical, psychological, relational or environmental factors. Some medical side-effects can be treated with medication, such as taking a local estrogen to help with menopausal pain that can make intercourse uncomfortable. Take note of any medication, such as some antidepressants and cardiac drugs, that can contribute to a decrease in libido and seek out medical alternatives when possible. Psychological factors, such as depression, anxiety or a previous trauma, can also affect sexual interest. Relational stresses, from raising young children to managing busy careers to caring for aging parents, can leave many emotionally, physically and physiologically too tired to have sex.”

Are mental health issues a normal part of aging? How can I take care of my brain?
Dr. Taylor says “The presence of mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression and dementia, in adults over the age of 65 ranges from 17 to 30 percent. This doesn’t mean that aging should automatically be associated with poor mental health, as many older adults find a renewed sense of purpose and continue to have a positive mental outlook into their 70s, 80s and 90s. Thinly slice ginger into rounds. Using vegetable peeler, peel 2 long strips of zest from lemon. Halve lemon and squeeze ¼ cup juice; set aside. Strip mint leaves from stems; set mint leaves aside. In large saucepan, bring ginger, lemon zest, mint stems and water to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low; partially cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in lemon juice, honey and mint leaves. Cover and steep, 10 to 15 minutes. Strain into large teapot; serve. With this extended lease on life, plus ongoing medical advances and a better understanding of our personal health, the future is looking bright. Since an annual checkup with a family doctor is not always required, ensure that you understand your medical history, communicate health concerns to your doctor and stay on top of your medical screenings. Tailoring many of these preventive measures to your personal health regimen can go a long way toward thwarting potential illnesses and taking charge of your overall well-being.

PAP TEST If you’re not at high risk for cervical cancer, book a Pap smear every two to three years, depending on your provincial guidelines. It’s an effective way to check for cervical cancer for women aged 25 to 69, says the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care. A Pap test can also detect human papillomavirus (HPV), a group of more than 100 different types of viruses. Some provinces use HPV tests to follow up abnormal Pap results as part of their cervical cancer screening programs. HPV testing is most effective for women aged 30 and older.

Maintain established healthy habits, such as eating well and exercising, to set yourself up for success in later years. In addition, talk to your family members to find out if there are any hereditary issues you should discuss with your physician. Also be aware the average age at which Canadian women are having babies has increased over time to 30.2 years. “If you’re thinking about getting pregnant, prepare by taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid, quitting smoking and alcohol, and becoming physically active,” says Dr. Karen Fleming, interim chief in the department of family and community medicine at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and assistant professor in the department of family and community medicine at the University of Toronto.

BLOOD-PRESSURE TEST Heart & Stroke recommends getting your blood pressure checked by a health-care provider once a year. High blood pressure is the number one risk factor for stroke and a major risk factor for heart disease. A lowrisk blood-pressure reading is less than 120/80. Your doctor will confirm a diagnosis of high blood pressure when either the top number (systolic) or the bottom number (diastolic) stays high over a period of time.
Immunizations INFLUENZA (FLU)
Recommended annually for all adults.
PNEUMOCOCCAL This vaccine guards against pneumococcal disease, an infection that can result in pneumonia, ear and sinus infections and meningitis. Adults over age 64, who aren’t at high risk, should get one dose; adults aged 18 to 65 only need it if they have specific risk factors.
BLOOD-GLUCOSE TEST The number of diagnosed cases of diabetes and the prevalence of this disease are increasing for women and men. This blood test screens for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Canada recommends that women have this test at age 40 and then every three years after that. If you’re considered high risk, the test should be done earlier or more frequently. (A risk calculator, using indicators such as body mass index and ethnic background, will help determine your likelihood; find one at diabetestest.ca.)
HEARING Speak with your doctor about having your hearing screened once in this decade. EYE EXAM Even if you haven’t noticed vision problems, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society suggests scheduling an eye exam every five years during this decade. The exam will also look for signs of glaucoma, which can start in your 40s.

Along with a Pap test, you might benefit from beginning these medical screenings in your 40s.
Did you know that strokes kill more women than men in Canada? “In our 40s, unique risk factors for cardiovascular disease impact screening. Having high blood pressure during pregnancy, early menopause and chest radiation for breast and other cancers would lead to additional screenings,” says Dr. Fleming. During this busy and transitional decade, some women are still able to get pregnant while others may be entering perimenopause (the stage before menopause), which can begin up to 10 years before a woman stops menstruating.
The vaccine is recommended for people aged 60 and older, although anyone over 50 can get it.
HPV (HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS) If you haven’t received the HPV vaccination, it’s recommended for girls and women between the ages of nine and 45.
MMR (MEASLES, MUMPS AND RUBELLA) Those born after 1969 who haven’t had the vaccine should speak to their doctor about getting it.
TDAP (TETANUS, DIPHTHERIA AND PERTUSSIS) Adults should receive a booster every 10 years.

Beyond physical changes, this period can come with additional challenges, from aging parents to demands from older children, all competing for your attention. “Women are often not the best at putting themselves first, but good health is key—otherwise, you’re no help to anyone,” says Dr. Fleming. “Exercising your body and your brain is important for maintaining lean muscle mass, strength, cognitive function and balance.” By this time, you’ve probably experienced a few episodes of night sweats; if menopause hasn’t kicked in yet, expect it to start soon. The average age of menopause for Canadian women is 52.
Continue screenings as recommended in your 40s, and add the following. Note the more frequent eye exams.

MAMMOGRAM If you’re between the ages of 50 and 74 and not at high risk for breast cancer, book a mammogram every two years. If you’re at high risk due to family history or gene mutations (BRCA1 or BRCA2), a personal history of breast cancer or prior chestwall radiation, you may need earlier or extra screenings.
CHOLESTEROL Worried about developing high cholesterol (a fat found in the bloodstream)? Canadian guidelines recommend that women who are over 50 and at low risk, or those who are postmenopausal, have their cholesterol tested every one to three years. Here’s some good news: High blood cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING The Canadian Cancer

Society recommends people between the ages of 50 and 74 who are not at high risk for colorectal cancer have a fecal occult blood test, which checks for small amounts of blood in the stool, every two years. If the fecal test is positive, the society recommends a flexible sigmoidoscopy. “For those with no risk factors, a fecal occult blood test that can be done at home and mailed in is the way to go; if you have symptoms or a parent with colon cancer, then you should go straight to a colonoscopy,” says Dr. Fleming.

BLOOD-PRESSURE TEST During these senior years, the prevalence of high blood pressure increases in women versus men. Continue to have your blood pressure checked by a health-care provider once a year. BONE MINERAL DENSITY SCAN All women over 65 should get a bonedensity test to check for osteoporosis, recommends Osteoporosis Canada. Start earlier, between the ages of 50 and 64, if you have risk factors, such as conditions that contribute to bone loss, like rheumatoid arthritis, or medications that can affect bone health. After your first test, the frequency depends on your risk for fractures. (Provincial regulations vary for age eligibility.) Along with testing for density, the scan looks at the quality of the bones and the mineral content. If the bones are weak, there’s an increased risk of fractures. It’s a painless X-ray, and it’s relatively quick, so you’ll be out the door in less than 20 minutes.
HEARING It’s estimated that more than 30 percent of adults over 65 have some type of hearing loss, so consider having your hearing tested by an audiologist at age 60 to set a baseline, then ask your doctor about screening your hearing at three-year intervals.

“It’s increasingly common to lose close family members and friends in this decade. Many individuals may feel isolated, but keeping busy and maintaining an active social life is important at this time,” says Dr. Fleming. Osteoporosis (porous bones) can become a serious health concern in your golden years. “Bone health is vital at this stage. Doing weight-bearing exercises and getting enough calcium and vitamin D all go a long way,” says Dr. Fleming. In the 65-plus group, the number of deaths is largest, with cancer and heart disease accounting for nearly half of fatalities.

Despite its cold, dark and cluttered reputation, a basement can be cozy and inviting, as this subterranean space proves. WANTS A WARM, “ EVERYONE WELCOMING INTERIOR,”
says Karen Sealy of Sealy Design Inc. That’s easier said than done when dealing with a dark, unfinished 500-square-foot basement, but the Toronto-based designer was up to the task. Envisioning a spacious, bright suite complete with a family room, kitchenette and bathroom, Sealy began with some intensive structural work, including underpinning to add ceiling height and relocating windows to increase natural light. “Structural changes aren’t as sexy as decorating,” says the designer, “but they can make all the difference.” Other game-changers include a gas fireplace and heated concrete floors throughout, which ensure year-round coziness. To soothe the eye and imbue that serene, welcoming feel, Sealy went for a mostly neutral palette and emphasized clean lines. But the real magic is unseen: In the family room, the offwhite shiplap covering much of the fireplace wall conceals ample storage space (including a full closet!), and in place of a conventional TV—which would have dominated the small room—a projector and screen are tucked away when not in use. The result is a surprisingly roomy and warm space that’s as perfect for reading on the sofa as it is for hosting a movie night.

whipping cream (35%) 2% milk cinnamon sticks, halved dark chocolate, finely chopped (about 6 oz) 6 large egg yolks ⅓ cup packed brown sugar ½ tsp vanilla chocolate shavings (optional) Line roasting pan with tea towel; place six 6-oz ramekins inside pan. In medium saucepan, bring cream, milk and cinnamon sticks almost to boil over heat. Remove from heat; cover and let stand for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, place chocolate in heatproof bowl. In separate bowl, whisk together egg yolks, brown sugar and vanilla. Set aside. Preheat oven to 325°F. Remove and discard cinnamon sticks from cream mixture; return pan to medium heat just until bubbles form around edge. Pour over chocolate; let stand, without stirring, for 1 minute.
