Inspiring pl aces I visited this am azing dark and moo dy space at Dimore Studio, Milan, on a recent work trip. But more on that next issue…
WELCOME HOW ABOUT THE BLUE WALL ON THE COVER – talk about an easy update! I know, I know, hard to put colour on a white wall – especially a classic white wall – and a darker hue, too, but hell, it’s only paint. Interior designer Nina Litchfield shares her own home with real living this month (page 110) and what a stunning palette of colours throughout. The backdrop of different hues in each room enables her to mix all her old furniture with key modern pieces; the colours make all the pieces work hard and updates absolutely everything. Her French classics look totally cool, as do her gilt frames, and her art pops off the walls. It’s a beautiful dialogue between past and present. I dare you to give it a try in your own home. I bet your Metallic glow old furniture that you were bored of will become relevant and somewhat wonderful. I bet Metal candlestick in Silver, you’ll be inspired, re-energised and fall in love with your home all over again. $19.95, H&M. On that note, I do think the time has come for minimalist interiors to take a side step and eclectic mixes of old and new to burst onto the scene. If you’re looking to blame anyone, blame Alessandro Michele from Gucci with his intensely beautiful collection earlier this year – it inspired everyone across the globe and in all fields to seriously mix it up (see above). My pic was taken at the Dimore Studio in Milan and I’ve included it to show you another beautiful moody wall and eclectic space. The use of a navy blue background for the floor and walls is so impactful, I must say it made me feel completely dreamy and winter cosy. The best Dark & handsome colours to try right now: terracotta, deep navy and glints of matt brass. Oh, and don’t forget Dari rug in Burgundy, antique rose – especially great in a cushion, floor rug or even a hero chair.
Cushy colour Colour Blocked cushion (45cm), $59.95, United Interiors.

Step 2: Frame it Make things interesting by mixing and matching different types and sizes of frames. Or, keep it clean and simple and use the same colour for every piece. AN INTERIOR DECORATOR CREATES A LUXURY CLUB STYLE IN HIS CLASSIC APARTMENT, WHICH IS FULL OF CREATIVE IDEAS AND COOL CONTRASTS
AE S TH ET E
Leather love In the entrance, Anders installed leather flooring, laying it in a classic herringbone pattern. It is soft to step upon and the leather ages beautifully. Dressed up In the dining area, an Ikea cabinet was painted in an elephant grey and given new handles. The round dining table is also from Ikea, although Anders is saving up to buy his dream table. He also painted this in the same colour as the cabinet, then lacquered it. A

Join the club Metal tile wallpaper in the living/dining area was found in Rome, and lends a distinct clubby vibe. A bar was created in the corner with an iron frame and vintage mirror as the tabletop, which reflects the light from above. The floor was painted in a grey and with the curtains softens the light in the room. A grey carpet delineates the dining area; the texture a subtle point of difference to the floor. The pendant is a Rue Verte design.
L K ” T A E S U O H “ @reallivingmag
ANDERS KRAKAU WANTED to create a “luxury club style” in his 80-sq-m apartment, which is situated in an 1800s building, while still respecting the block’s classic architecture and its elegant location. WHAT IS THE FIRST IMPRESSION ON ENTERING THE HOME? From the minute you walk into Anders’s apartment you sense a moody and slightly mysterious atmosphere, a result of sumptuous, dark brown leather flooring in the entrance – which is laid in a classic herringbone pattern – and a muted palette. The feeling is both masculine, without being cold and minimalistic, and feminine, without being girlish. It’s important to Anders that his home feels welcoming, cosy and comfortable for both his guests and himself. WHAT GUIDED THE COLOUR CHOICES AND MATERIALS? The use of soft greys feature strongly, along with the warm 19th-century tones inspired by Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916), who was famous for painting subdued portraits and tranquil rooms. The selection of classic materials – leather, aged timber, copper and velour – could have been borrowed from the 19th century, too, although these have been catapulted into the 21st century in an innovative way, mainly through the various designs and their juxtapositions. “You could call the style, classic 18th-century style dressed up to fit now,” Anders comments. DESCRIBE SOME OF THE DECORATIVE CONTRASTS While adhering to classic touches, the interior is anything but traditional. It’s one of contrasts – a cocktail of European lounge style and raw natural elements. In the living room, a plump modern sofa is juxtaposed with an aged timber coffee table. Over the sofa hangs a photo artwork that depicts a bronze sculpture in a park on a grey, winter’s day – a cool contrast to the nearby pile of soft cushions, which are heaped enticingly on the floor. Also beside the sofa, the pile of magazines and books masquerading as a side table is a quirky contrast to the sophisticated drinks trolley and metal-tile wallpaper on the other side of the room. Here, in the dining area, chairs of different designs – some classic, some sentimental – are gathered around a freshly painted Ikea table. FORM OR FUNCTION? There are few knickknacks in this home. Everything has a purpose, whether it’s functional, like the furniture, or aesthetic, such as the tree branch that adds textural, decorative interest to the bedroom. ANY SPLURGES? Anders likes to invest in classic, quality furniture, then play around with accessories, colours and patterns as trends come and go – without going broke or losing his style! It’s a heady mix he’s mastered in his club at home. R

TWO PIECES OF ART CONNECT VISUALLY
Creative soul Anders sits on one of the four different chairs gathered around the dining table; his is cosied up with a reindeer hide. Chairs include a Philippe Starck “Victoria Ghost” chair and a sentimental leather armchair, inherited from his grandfather. Cutlery bowl A vintage wooden bowl is used to store silver-plated cutlery and coarse cotton napkins. Public art The black sofa, gold cushions and Flavia lamp bring elegance and warmth to the room. FIND OUT WHAT MAKES OUR FAVOURITE CREATIVES TICK
AMANDA BRISKIN-RETTIG, OWNER OF LEATHER GOODS LABEL A-ESQUE A BANK BALANCE OF $5000, A HANDFUL OF BAG DESIGNS AND A PLANE TICKET OVERSEAS LAUNCHED AMANDA INTO THE AUSSIE FASHION INDUSTRY WITH HER HANDBAG AND ACCESSORIES LABEL MIMCO. NOW SHE’S UPPING THE ANTE WITH HER HIGH-END LEATHER GOODS BRAND A-ESQUE. Were you creative as a child? “Yes, I loved to play, daydream, window shop and dress up, stomping around in clogs trying on dress after dress, experimenting with hair, frocks, jewellery and my nanna’s bags.”
What are you currently working on? “I’m in a constant state of evolution, creation and, sometimes, frustration with my work. Today my mind is on micro cases and new appliqué patterns.” Who/what are your creative influences? “An eclectic mix of creatives spanning various aspects of design, interiors, architecture and fashion. Peoplewatching, everyday people and memories tend to be the greatest influence for me. I soak it all up all the time, I always have.” What is the strangest place you’ve found inspiration? “A building site. There’s something about the purist nature of bags that are made for purpose, like toolbelts. I really enjoy seeing industrial, functional bags in use.” Your most treasured item? “My engagement ring. It was my husband’s grandmother’s. She left it to him in a safe with a note: ‘For your wife’. It’s romantic. I love the story so I treasure the ring.” What’s your favourite colour? “For me, colour and texture are paramount. Awkward colour combinations have always been my thing. The colours on my
Petal Pure bags exemplify this. I love thinking about the clash and mix, and work hard to achieve it.” Favourite space? “Our home. It inspires me daily and remains a sanctuary for our family life. The fact that we love being together under the roof of our home makes it my favourite, most valued space.” The most inspiring space you have ever walked into? “Villa Necchi in Milan. The 1930s heritage-listed villa (which is now a museum) was the backdrop to Luca Guadagnino’s movie I Am Love. The juxtaposition of textures, the mix of polish, industrial and worn is exquisite.” Who’s your hero? “I enjoy Tilda Swinton… her attitude, her hair, here wardrobe, her ‘take’ on life.” Finish this sentence: I never leave home without… “My perfume – Baudelaire by Byredo – my phone, and my bags.” So, what’s inside your handbag? “I have bags in my bags. I often carry around new designs – playing, road testing and thinking about them. I’m usually at a loss to find my keys and wallet.” A-esque.com R

THERE’S NO STOPPING THE “DRIVEN CREATIVES” BEHIND STYLING BRAND NATHAN + JAC NATHAN + JAC STARTED as a bit of a passion project for us. Jac and Bec met while studying interiors at RMIT then we all ended up working together on various styling projects; we knew we shared a very similar aesthetic, so we brought our strengths together in one place. THE IDEA for the business came after realising some clients didn’t need a full house style, just an accessory-and-art pack to give their homes a new lease on life. We saw an opportunity to offer complete styled accessory packs and now offer full-room linen and accessory packs, plus a range of individual cushions, rugs, homewares and art. We release six full collections a year and accessory packs and products weekly. OUR CUSHIONS have been so well received – seeing our first range was exciting. We all work really hard, but the fact that we have created a viable business out of something we love doing is the biggest highlight of them all. R

INDUSTRY I N S I D E R
SALLY CAHAL AN STUDIED A CERTIFICATE IV IN DESIGN AND DIPLOMA OF SURFACE DESIGN AT ISCD. SHE NOW RUNS HER OWN HOMEWARES AND TEXTILE BUSINESS, SOUK & CO, AND RECENTLY CO-DESIGNED A FABRIC R ANGE FOR EMILY ZIZ HOW DID YOUR TIME AT ISCD HELP YOU TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW? iscd provided me with a vibrant and nurturing environment to explore and grow creatively. I met like-minded people, developed friendships and a career network and have had some amazing opportunities through the industry briefs and awards. My surface design know-how allows me to produce designs across all sorts of mediums, and see them brought to life through the production process.
Overall, though, the most important thing that I gained from studying at iscd is the belief and confidence to follow my creative path.
WHAT DO YOU DO NOW? Along with fellow student Sally Palmer, I was the winner of the 2014 Emily Ziz Surface Design Graduate of the year award. We had the opportunity to design our own fabric collection “La Paradiso” which has just been launched. I also launched my business Souk & Co. (www.soukandco.com) based on my passion for travel,
design and unique products. I travel to Morocco to source and import artisanal homewares and custom pieces and also am designing hand painted tiles and bespoke hand loomed textiles from Morocco.
ANY ADVICE TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GET INTO THE INDUSTRY AND ARE LOOKING TO STUDY? Go to an information session at iscd – this was what stirred the creative in me. The Certificate IV in Design course was a fun, creative and inspiring year.
If you’re passionate about interior decorating, design, styling or colour and want to make a career change or explore a new direction, contact iscd. Choose from a range of courses and timetable options that suit your lifestyle and interests. Enrolments are open in Sydney and Melbourne for our July on campus intake and our online course. 1 MOON WALL MURAL
Time 1 hr 10mins + drying You will need Sugar soap; 2 paint colours of your choice; paint roller; printer; transparency paper; overhead or digital projector; pencil; fine & medium paintbrushes Step 1 Prepare your wall for painting and wash with sugar soap, following the package instructions. Paint wall in your chosen colour. Allow to dry, then apply a second coat. We opted for a dark wall and a white moon (Porter’s Paints eggshell acrylic in Obsidian and Lamb’s Wool). Step 2 Do an internet search for “moon”. Once you’ve found an image you like, print image on transparency paper and project onto your wall using an overhead projector (or scan the image and use a digital projector). Trace outline with pencil. Alternatively, you can draw a moon on the wall freehand. Step 3 Use paint and paintbrush to paint moon using projected image as a guide. Step 3 Holding the string taut, move pencil around board to form a perfect circle. Remove nail and discard. Step 4 Use jigsaw to carefully cut out marked circle. Sand all edges smooth. Step 5 Attach pine offcut to one side of circle in the centre using wood adhesive. Create a loop with picture hanging wire and secure to pine offcut with nails. If these steps seem a little tricky, don’t worry! There’s a video to help you through. You can find it at Homestolove.com.au/rl Time 2 hrs You will need Ruler; pencil; utility knife; foil cardboard in Silver (three 50.8cm x 63cm sheets); hot-glue gun; foamboard (50cm x 77cm); appropriate wall fixture Step 1 Use ruler and utility knife to cut a triangle from corner of cardboard, taking note of the length of the longest side. Score a line on the mirror-side from the 90-degree corner of the triangle (the corner joining the two short sides) to the centre of the long side. Fold along scored edge. Step 2 Refer to the length of the long side of triangle and divide it by two. Draw another triangle with two sides this length – the third side can be as long or short as you like. Step 3 Cut out second triangle, leaving a 1cm border along the two sides that are the same length. Trim corners of triangle so bordered edges are angled inwards. Step 4 Turn second triangle right-way up and score along the two bordered edges. Fold in and flip triangle back over. Use hot-glue gun to apply adhesive to each tab, then place the even matching edges of the first triangle, folded inwards, against the two glued tabs. Gently press to stick together. Step 5 You should now have a threedimensional triangle – a pyramid. Apply glue to each of the inside corners and place on foamboard. Alternatively, you could make all of your triangles first before adhering to the board. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until you have enough triangles to fill the board. You can also place smaller triangles on top of the larger ones for a layered effect. Step 6 Once complete, cut through foamboard around edge of triangle arrangement. Hang using appropriate wall fixture. A

6 DOUBLE DUTY BEDHEAD
Time 40 mins You will need Tape measure; pencil; drill & screws (or appropriate wall fixtures); spirit level; 4 x non-structural pine lengths (two 2.22m x 9cm x 35mm; and two 1.02m x 9cm x 35mm); plywood sheet (2.4m 1.02m x 3mm); hammer & flat-head nails; 3 x premium dressed pine lengths with mitred ends (one 2.4m x 18.4cm x 19mm; two 1.02m x 18.4cm x 19mm; and two 40cm x 18.4cm x 19mm). Note: measurements are to fit a queen bed; ask your local hardware store to cut your timber to size and to mitre ends of dressed pine for you. Step 1 Mark on wall approximately where you’d like to place your bedhead. Ours is about 20cm off the floor. Create a frame by screwing non-structural pine lengths to wall in a rectangle, ensuring pieces are level. Step 2 Hold plywood sheet flat against pine frame and secure with nails (you might need a friend to help you hold plywood in place). Step 3 Place the 2.4m-long dressed pine length on top of frame and secure with screws, making sure the mitred edges are facing down. Repeat with side panels (1.02m) and bottom shelves (40cm). Secure shelves together with a nail at each corner. Step 4 Position your bed in the middle of the bedhead then decorate shelves with your favourite books and trinkets. R

a real living Super Amart solution What about the colour palette? Echo the colours of the city: various shades of grey mixed with timber and a hint of black. The softness of the upholstered bedhead, bedlinen and rug will temper the monochrome colour scheme. And how about finishing touches? A plant is a must! With all the black, white and grey, the pop of green will add some freshness. Also, incorporate beautiful books – great to read during your downtime, but also fabulous as decorative accessories.

What’s this look all about? It has the feel of an architectural urban home. It’s contemporary but totally comfortable. How do you get the look? A squareedged upholstered bed is your starting point and the centrepiece of the room. And, every bed needs a bedside table – go for one with extra storage. What else? A floor rug will help pull the look together and bring warmth underfoot, which is essential on cool winter mornings. Oh, and if you have room, get a side chair as well.

BOUTIQUE OWNER HANNE BORGE, HER PARTNER P ER A ND T HEIR K IDS L E A H, 11, A ND T EO, 8 Peace and quiet The cabin is private and welcoming as it’s located on a ridge with no view of neighbours. In winter, the area turns into a winter wonderland complete with mountains and pine trees as far as the eye can see. “We love our cabin and being close to nature,” Hanne says. During the summer months, the family hike on the ridge and pick berries for jams and fruit pies to enjoy on the terrace later. Working with the elements The art of creating atmospheres forms a considerable part of Hanne’s work, and something she has mastered to perfection. Grey hues and a simple aesthetic used for the interior of the chalet harmonises well with the surrounding snow-topped landscape. A

Back to black For visual impact, Hanne painted the back wall in the dining room jet black. A vintage shelf on wheels services the oft-used dining area. Old and new Kitchen cabinets are made from planks that were recycled from an old barn, while benchtops are poured concrete. The pendant is Muuto, the sink, Ikea. Tile talk Vintage tiles have been laid against a painted wooden floor to contrasting effect. Shoes off! A pair of upholstered linen benches in the entranceway offer a comfy spot for putting on, taking off shoes. The wall light was custom made. A
AFTER A LONG DAY on the slopes the Borge family retreat to their cabin, kick off their ski boots, hang up their jackets and relax back in a sheepskin-covered armchair in front of a crackling fire. What more could you want? The cabin, which is about a three-hour drive north of Oslo, Norway, was designed and built in 2006 by homeowner Per, who was inspired by Nordic log houses from the early 19th century, resembling Viking houses. The guiding principal for the dimensions of the house was determined by the length of the logs used, the result being a simple rectangular shape. “It feels like a cave where we can retreat and simply be together as a family,” says Per’s partner and the home’s chief decorator Hanne. “Being with our friends and family means a lot to us. Therefore, we chose to live with open common rooms between the kitchen, dining and living rooms.” Hanne and Per also wanted the cabin to play host to all their friends who often visit during the ski season. The cabin’s interior is cool and modern with many personal touches including lots of little gathering areas – in every nook and corner there’s a spot to sit and relax with a hot cup of tea, a game of cards or a good book. The calming hues of grey combined with raw timber elements throughout set the tone for a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Per and Hanne were also conscious to avoid that new-build feeling by introducing reclaimed materials and vintage items. “Our kitchen is constructed out of reclaimed wooden planks and all 13 doors are vintage and were bought locally,” Hanne explains. “We put an ad in the local paper and announced we were seeking old materials and interior pieces, so now we have all these doors in different colours and sizes that are anything but sterile.” Hanne has also drawn elements and inspiration from her interiors boutique Bolina and surrounded herself with a raw industrial design. “I don’t like items that are too perfect or match together too well. Industrial design projects a sense of sincerity because the items were designed to be used and are not simply aesthetic,” Hanne says. “An interior is much more interesting if it consists of surprising features and compositions, so we have used non-traditional solutions and introduced vintage items. It provides the space with a story and a degree of edginess.” R

MAKE PROJECT Fabric blinds Step 1 Take your fabric, measure window and cut fabric to fit, leaving an excess of 6cm at the top and 3cm around the sides. Step 2 Fold a 3cm hem along the two sides of the fabric and iron along the folds. Sew with sewing machine. Step 3 Roll bottom edge of fabric around the piece of dowel once and staple in place. Step 4 Take your wooden baton and drill a hole a quarter of the way in from one corner and repeat at the other corner. Cut two equal lengths from the cord and tie the end of one length around the baton next to the first hole, then tie the other length next to the second hole. Staple in place. Step 5 Cut two lengths of strong fabric for tabs (around 15cm long) and hem the edges. Sew a metal ring onto the end of each tab. Step 6 Fold the top edge of the fabric over the wooden baton and staple in place, then sew the fabric tabs onto the front of the fabric so that they’re aligned with the holes in the baton and the rings are dangling down. Step 7 Through the holes already made in the baton (underneath your tabs), attach baton to wall using wood screws. Step 8 Attach a cleat at desired height on the inner right window frame. Step 9 Now loop lengths of cord around rolled-up blind and thread through the rings. The far piece will need to thread through both rings. Arrange cord, pull taut and secure to the cleat. Y O U

ALTHOUGH LISELOTTE WATKINS is enveloped in the fashion industry as a fashion illustrator, you’ll rarely find her in a pair of high heels; she prefers to dress herself in good-quality but comfortable clothes. The same applies to her home – it must look beautiful and inspiring, but needs to be functional for herself, her husband Jonas and their two young children Wim and Ava. The heart of the home is the joined living/dining zone where two rooms are separated by large glass doors. To one side, the dining room features a large, raw timber table, mismatched chairs and a collection of porcelain vases – it’s Liselotte’s favourite space and where she spends most of her time. To the other side, the living area is formal but comfortable and offers a range of seating options making it perfect for both creative meetings and more relaxed family gatherings. “The room is furnished with an elaborate casualness,” Liselotte says of the living area. “My balance is somewhere between order and chaos.” Earthenware vessels, touchy-feely textures and original parquetry flooring offer a warm, welcoming touch. Down the elegantly tiled hallway, a small storage room with bright green walls doubles as Liselotte’s workspace. The room is where she can “create in freedom and leave a mess when I need to”. Liselotte’s bold and colourful illustrations often make their way from the workshop walls out into the living spaces, the artworks’ hues are then carried into the accessories. Next to Liselotte’s workspace is the kitchen, a rectangular room that looks out onto a balcony. Here, her penchant for vintage items is even more evident as many of the pieces have been picked up at flea markets or antique boutiques. “I grew up in the countryside surrounded by dogs, cats and foxes,” Liselotte says. It’s no surprise animal motifs, even animals, are peppered around the home. A taxidermy deer head hangs in the living area and framed bugs decorate the kids’ bedroom. More original features are found in the bathroom: blue ceramic tiles with a floral pattern and a large bathtub. A cabinet “taken from the side of the road”, a chipped stool and a few retro oil paintings complete the picture. It’s an eclectic combination that just seems to work. “I could never see myself in a minimalist house,” Liselotte says. “To create, I need to hear my kids and the dog running around, playing and staining the floor with mud. Only then do I feel at home.” R

CR EATI V IT Y IS A N EVOLU TIONA RY process, and often with interiors, the style you originally love isn’t always what you end up decorating with. Such was the case for Richa Pant and Eddie Kaul. The couple bought their two-bedroom apartment in Melbourne in 2012, and both hailing from India – Eddie and Richa moved to Melbourne about 20 years ago – had intended to fill the place with lots of colour and Indian references. But, the style of the building and city location led them down a different path. Melbourne interior design firm Hecker Guthrie were employed to do the original interior fitout of the building, so Richa and Eddie brought them back to help with the decorating process. In the beginning, the journey was a little confronting – the vibrant couple were stepping into neutral territory – but they love the end result. “It’s light and airy, with a soft colour palette,” Richa says. The interior has many Scandinavian influences: the palette and simple designs in particular, but its roots are definitely Australian. Key furniture pieces include a sofa from local brand Jardan and a dining table made by Melbourne designer Daniel Barbera. “And it’s full of Australian artwork,” Richa says. “Art is a very important part of our home; without it, our home is incomplete,” she adds. The professional couple love to entertain in their downtime and do so both indoors and out in their courtyard. This outdoor space is filled with plants, though neither Richa or Eddie profess to being natural green thumbs. Paul Hyland from plant nursery Glasshaus helped them change “from being people who could barely keep a plant alive, to ones who have a thriving garden”, Eddie says. So much has their love of plants evolved that they have now created a few leafy vignettes indoors, too. It’s been a few years since Richa and Eddie moved in and they’ve hit their decorating stride, even working some Indian elements into their scheme. “Richa’s books, comics from India that only we know about, artefacts from our travels – they are all reflections of us,” Eddie says. “This home captures our essence without losing the beautiful simplicity we have come to love.” R

ABOUT NINA She’s an interior designer who shares the house with her husband, Vasco, and their two children Konstantin, 5, and Victoria, 3. Nina loves the house due to its “good vibes”, high ceilings and the fact it is flooded with light. Nina’s favourite memory at the house was her 30th birthday celebration when a huge tent was erected in the garden for dancing. “It was a silent disco so the neighbours could sleep,” she comments. Nina also loves her neighbourhood. “It’s still a little edgy, which is what we like about it.” Nina’s best advice regarding interior decorating is to “be yourself ”. Mangroveandco.com @mangroveandco Vivid fest “The room is so cosy,” homeowner Nina Litchfield says of the living space. “Everyone thought I was mad when I said I was going to paint it navy blue, but now it’s the talking point – it draws people in. It’s never dark; it’s quite bright and beautiful.” Nina poses by an artwork by Claerwen James. “The little girl reminded me of me. I like the touch of melancholy – I like the idea that children aren’t just happy bouncing around, but also feel deeply and are thoughtful.” A

COBALT BLUE
ECLECTIC WITH A TOUCH OF timeless elegance is how Nina Litchfield describes the interior of her inner-city Victorian home, which she shares with her husband Vasco and their children, Konstantin and Victoria. “I like to mix old and new, but never want it to look like I’ve tried too hard,” she says. Although the place contains antique pieces and precious artwork, it’s still very much a family home, with lots of aged and characterful elements apparent, plus children’s naive and colourful artwork, toys and books, which are dotted around the house. “I think a home needs to reflect the people who live in the house and to be comfortable,” Nina says. “I don’t like very stark interiors; the feeling of cosiness and warmth is of major importance to me.” While the home didn’t require any structural work when the family moved in a few years ago, it was anything but “warm” with the entire interior painted in white to emphasise the generous proportions of the rooms. Although that was a positive, Nina was champing at the bit to add some colour to create the much desired feeling of warmth and personality. She quickly settled on wall colours: a serene, deep blue in the living room (in smart and fresh contrast to the white floorboards and with ample light flooding in from three large sash windows), a blush in the dining room, and a neutral pinky-beige in the master bedroom. All of the colours provide the perfect, popping backdrop for her furniture and art collections and eyecatching curios, some of which reflect her Brazilian-German heritage. “Growing up with these two different and strong cultures has strongly influenced the way I think and decorate,” Nina explains. “In Germany you have the contrast of the old baroque style and the Bauhaus era. Brazil is vibrant and colourful, with beautiful colonial buildings in the middle of the tropics and modernism thrown into the mix. l like to take ideas from these different influences to make a space work.”
Nina’s approach to decorating is clearly fearless; she has an instinctive way of putting together unusual combinations. In the dining room, an elegant red velvet sofa is placed beneath an oversized rustic mirror, and a quirky pair of retro, ceramic white cockatoos take centre stage on the aged dining table. On the upstairs landing, a pink flamingo, from Japan, appears right at home on a solid timber chest of drawers. In the living room, a large tropical palm tree – suggesting relaxed beachy holidays – provides a beautiful contrast to the more formal dark blue walls and the art collection where edgy and contemporary fine art jostles with traditional portraiture including paintings of Vasco’s grandparents. “I love having them both on the living room wall watching over us,” Nina muses, adding: “I love art and would like to have more of it but it’s an expensive passion.” She’s content with collecting “small beautiful objects, travel mementos and fashion accessories” instead. Many of Nina’s pieces, too, are gifts that have found a place to settle in her home. These include a large Venetian mirror hanging above a chest of drawers on the upstairs landing. “My grandmother found out I wanted it and gathered people from my family to give it to me as a wedding gift,” Nina explains. Tolix stools around the dining table were also a wedding gift, from a friend. Another piece, the antique blue and white striped sofa, Nina has had since she got married. “We first had it upholstered in a flowery old fabric, which made it even more romantic and quite feminine. I loved it, but two years ago the fabrics started to wear out and have holes, so I needed to come up with a solution. I thought of completely revamping it, giving it new life and bringing it into the 21st century. I love it now even more,” she says. “I think in life you go through different phases; now I’m in a velvet, cobalt blue phase.” Yet, despite these phases, the evolving mix of styles and colours just works. “We are very happy here as a family – that’s what I love the most.” R

Being switched on when it comes to lighting your home is all about understanding the space you’re working with, and in turn, how it can work for you
L IVI NG RO OM The key is in the name of this multifunctional room; it’s a space for “living”, which means the layers of lighting required are important for carrying out essential tasks and creating moods at different times of the day. Hanging globe pendants in the living room can make a statement and, depending on the bulb used, can create a beautiful warm glow – particularly effective if they’re dimmable. A wall bracket light above artwork will ensure you can view your favourite pieces at any time of day, but the gentle hint of overhead light can also provide warmth when your task lighting is dimmed or switched off. Table and floor lamps tend to be the first lights we switch on in a room, so their positioning is important – they need to be placed in easy-to-access areas, such as next to the sofa or on a side table. Again, whether your palette is cool and neutral like this one or rich and warm, the globes you choose for lamps should always create warm light for a more relaxing environment (see next page). A

Yes, this is a light. Designed by Slovakia’s Lenka Czereova, The Illusion light looks like it’s peeling off the wall. It’s made from nylon plastic and has an energy-efficient electroluminescent (OLED) display.
WA R M O R C O O L L I G H T ? Lighting expert Celina Clarke (see right) says you should be looking at warm light for living spaces. “Choose globes that give off a warm light, or 3000 Kelvin colour temperature. Light is a rainbow of colour and when we look at daylight we’re getting the whole spectrum. Artificial light is giving you part of the spectrum – warm light gives you those oranges and yellows, like late-afternoon light,” Celina explains. “We have bluer light in the morning that wakes us up, so to match our circadian rhythm we need to use warmer light in the evening to feel more relaxed.”

ROOMS
W A L L S T E P P E N D A N T
WH AT T O INSTA LL & WH ER E Before shelling out on designer lamps, it pays to do your homework and consider the different zones, functions and ambience of the rooms they’re intended for. Here to light the way in contemporary luminaire design is Celina Clarke, cofounder of Melbourne lighting specialists ISM Objects (Ismobjects.com.au). With a background in industrial design, Celina has a passion for lighting spaces, so we asked for her tips to help you illuminate your home…
MOOD & A MBIENCE In modern homes, people no longer have traditional spaces, with multiple tasks being carried out in just one room. The rise of portable technology means it’s commonplace to do your work sitting on the sofa, at the dining table or even in bed. “People don’t always have the luxury of a separate office, so you need to be able to create different atmospheres at different times of the day or night,” Celina says. “Creating different moods is all about controlling the light.” Installing dimmers is one of the easiest ways to do this. “Phase dimming is your standard kind of dimming,” Celina explains. “But there are a lot of new digital dimmers on the market, which are suitable for new-builds as they require two extra dimming cables.” Ask your lighting retailer or electrician for help if you’re not sure. So which lights should you put on dimmers and where? First up, imagine how you use each room. Do you have guests over for dinner a lot? If so, you may want to start the night with a light at a certain level over the dining table and then as the night progresses you’ll probably need to dim those lights. Alternatively, you may want to crank those lights up if you’re working or reading the newspaper. In the bathroom, you need to be able to relax at the end of a busy day, so dimmable lighting is the way to go, and in the bedroom, dimmable pendants either side of the bed or sofa will create a relaxing ambience that can also be increased for reading.
Stop press: Melbourne lighting guru Volker Haug has created this new slimline design ($462). It’s a pendant, but it’s also wall-mounted, so you get the best of both worlds. It has a standard E27 (ES) lamp holder. Volker suggests his own L070 (8W LED Opal, 125mm dia) or L136 (6W LED filament frosted, 125mm dia) globes, but standard globes will work just fine. Volkerhaug.com
POSITIONING & ZONING If you’re renovating or building a house, you have the luxury of planning the lighting from scratch, but even if you want to revamp your existing home, defining zones and positioning is key. Living and dining areas need enough light sources to create interest while maintaining the right mood – but overlit rooms can be cold and uninviting. The aim is to strike the right balance. “It’s nice to bring the lighting down lower over dining and coffee tables to create intimacy,” Celina says. Another consideration is portable lighting such as table and floor lamps to create what Celina describes as “warm pools of light”. (This can also be applied to the bedroom.) So where should we position portable lighting? “If there is room, place a table lamp next to the sofa or bed. In a reading nook you may want a floor lamp that comes over from behind you,” Celina advises. “And it’s always good to have a light somewhere near a TV so you’re not just looking at the glow of the screen.” The TV gives off a blue light which isn’t conducive to relaxation. See next pages for bathroom and kitchen positioning. A

BATHROOM Bathroom lighting has a bit of science behind it. “The rule of thumb with bathrooms is to light from both sides of your face, so when you’re looking in the mirror you don’t have just one light source because it creates shadowing,” Celina explains. “So, put lights on the wall either side of the mirror.” Celina also recommends having a couple of circuits so you can turn on the mirror lights, but have the main lights on a dimmer to create those mood spots. It’s important to have good downlights (preferably LED) in the bathroom, too, so that you have multidirectional lighting, eliminating shadow. Good spots for
downlights are over the doorways and shower. But before you start stringing up pendants and ordering bulbs, stop and call a qualified electrician to install your lighting. For obvious reasons, there are strict rules about where you position fittings in the bathroom and an electrician will be able to advise you on what you can and can’t put where. There’s also a rating for light fittings, called an IP rating – IP 65 is for fully outdoors in the rain. T E L E B E U T E L I G H T Amazingly, the shade on this fabulous wall-mounted Telebeute light by HerrWolke (Herrwolke.com) is crafted from cardboard, so each light has its own character.
BEDROOM If your bedside table is piled high with books and a mug of coffee is often precariously perched on the edge, you’ll know there’s not much room for a bedside lamp. Similarly, for a neat freak, the less clutter the better, so a solitary table lamp might be preferred. While lamps work for some, others might prefer the trend for hanging pendants, wall lights or spotlights either side of the bed. And this is one room where you will definitely want to turn the lights down low, so put them on dimmers if you can. Natural light plays a big part in the bedroom, too, so make sure your window dressings allow the sunlight to flood in. If your home is quite dark, consider skylights to let more light in during the day. Like any other room in your home, think about what you do in your bedroom. Do you apply make-up at the mirror or perhaps you like to work here. Your task lighting needs to work for you, as does your general lighting, which may be needed for cleaning or putting laundry away, but never position harsher lights, such as downlights, directly above your bed. K ITCHEN Separate kitchens are becoming a thing of the past with homeowners preferring open-plan living spaces that include the kitchen, dining and living room. Because of this you need to light the space in terms of zoning. Kitchen lighting has to be functional but there is a place for mood lighting, like the out-of-context table light on the bench on the opposite page that gives a lovely glow to the decorative elements on the benchtop. Multiple forms of lighting is key. Celina suggests LED highlight lighting that shows up under or above the joinery. “LED strip lighting is so small and thin and usually comes with double-sided tape so you can run it along your cabinets. It comes with a plug pack so you can simply plug it in.” Also consider
dimmable downlights under the top cupboards, and lights that turn on when you open cupboard doors. Using three or four pendants above the kitchen island is a great way to add visual impact, as well as useful task lighting. Make sure you light the benchtops and cooking areas well, avoiding lighting placements that create shadows over the workspace. Lights on either side of the stove will create even illumination while you cook and can be teamed with the downlighting from the rangehood (admit it, we all use the rangehood for lighting!). Another consideration in the kitchen is the amount of hours you spend in it – energy-efficient bulbs, such as fluorescent or LED, are a good choice for your task lighting. R

TRANSFORM THIS LOFT Y MELBOURNE WAREHOUSE INTO A LUXE ABODE
The designer “Trust is a big thing between the client and designer, and that comes from truly listening to what is important to the client so that you deliver on their brief, not your own,” says interior designer Jessica Bettenay, pictured opposite. Super storage The home’s garage has enough room to store four cars – ideal for homeowner and car enthusiast Matt Walsh. A

WHEN THE BRIEF to fit out the interior of an empty old warehouse hit Jessica Bettenay’s desk, she was eager to inspect the site. Once an old bottle factory located on the fringe of Melbourne’s CBD – and never before inhabited as a residence – the derelict building offered up endless design possibilities and opportunities. Although the building was untouched for decades, Jessica could see how her clients had easily fallen in love with the raw and rare nature of the warehouse and its central location. All it needed was some serious TLC – and time.
After conducting an extensive 12-month renovation period under the direction of architect David Norman, the owners were able to move back into their multitiered space, and team up with Jessica on the design front to tackle the interior. “My aim was to work with the integrity of the building and keep the spaces open, but add texture, layers and warmth with materials so that it didn’t feel cold and soulless. Keeping it collaborative with my clients was key and ensuring my selections would work back with their well-honed style and the way they lived was what mattered most. There were many brainstorming sessions between us to get it right,” Jessica recalls. A

The first brainstorming session began with how best to “zone” the main open-plan area without closing it off. Clever use of lighting proved in part to be the answer, with Jessica installing striking pendants and wall-mounted lights in many areas of the home. For a touch of luxe, and as the couple like to entertain, the kitchen received a concrete benchtop, which was poured onsite and wrapped in antique bronzed mirror, and a splashback made of bespoke white tiles. A top-floor bedroom retreat layered with luxurious fabrics, flowing drapes and city views, plus a basement for Matt to house his cars, and the project is complete. Jess’s secret to success? “Finding the right balance between existing pieces and modern choices.” R

TINY JUNGLE
For this creative Melbournite, plants of all shapes and textures – but apartment-friendly sizes – are what transform her urban pad into a beautifully inspiring home WHO SAID THAT BIG IS BETTER? Tapestry weaver Haily Tran and her husband Ken Wang have transformed their humble two-bedroom Melbourne apartment into a tiny urban sanctuary. The couple had moved into the Collingwood unit in May 2015, after buying it off the plan three years earlier. As it was brand new, they didn’t have to make any changes – but it did need some “life” injected into it. Haily’s first instinct was to add greenery – and she set about creating an “indoor jungle” with plants in every room. Plants have always been a part of her life. “My mum helped me plant my first cactus when I was in grade four,” she recalls. “She wanted it to be a symbol of how my life will not only survive in all conditions but to actually thrive. The cactus is still in her courtyard today. It’s my height now!” As passionate as Haily is for greenery, her other creative outlet is weaving bright and textural wall tapestries. When she’s surrounded by plants, with classical music playing in the background, she feels as though she’s in an inner-city paradise as she creates her intricate weaves. “I find it therapeutic to learn music with my ears and weave with my hands at the same time,” she comments. Haily is a keen supporter of locally sourced and made products. She buys all her plants from neighbourhood shops and nurseries including Loose Leaf, Fitzroy Nursery, Glasshaus and Nature Boy Nrth; large pots from Pop & Scott and Retro Print Revival, and smaller pots from local ceramic artisans. She sells the smaller pots, and her weaves, through her online shop B For Brian. A
Planted out Some of the plants injecting the living area with so much life include an arrowhead plant (on side table, left), fiddle leaf fig (right of sofa), devil’s ivy (hanging, top right) and rubber plant and peace lily (bottom right).

TIPS & TRICK S WAT E R I N G Depending on the climate, water plants once a fortnight during warmer months and once every three weeks during cooler months. HARDY CHOICES Check that the environmental conditions in your home suit the ability of the plants to thrive before you buy them. LIGHT Plants thrive best in a well-lit space, but not in direct sunlight. POSITION Rotate plants around the home once a month to enjoy the different light. As they grow, their form and height change so they may also require different spaces.

Most of the couple’s furniture is also Australian-made, with clean lines sitting lightly in the limited space. “We have chosen makers that encourage a mindful way of living that does not promote constantly needing to renew objects,” Haily says. Their interior style is a “hybrid combo of a mid-century, bohemian, Australian-makers haven jungalow!”. The “jungalow” includes the 26-plus plants. While maintenance could be tiresome, Haily simply gives the plants a drenching in the bathroom once a fortnight in warmer months and once every three weeks when it’s cooler, then leaves them for a day to drain. MAX OUT YOUR SUPER CONTRIBUTIONS Check that you have maximised your super contribution limits for the current financial year. You can make up to $30,000 a year in concessional contributions, including the super guarantee, if you’re under 48. If you’re 49 and over the maximum is $35,000. If you’re self-employed you can contribute directly to your fund and claim a tax deduction. To claim the contributions as a tax deduction for this financial year you need to get in before June 30. Why salary sacrifice? Your contributions come out of your pre-tax salary which reduce your taxable income and increase your disposable income.

MONEY MAGAZINE’S EFFIE ZAHOS REVEALS FOUR IMPORTANT THINGS YOU NEED TO DO BEFORE JUNE 30
TURNING 31? YOU NEED PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE If you don’t take out hospital cover before July 1 following your 31st birthday you may be stuck with a 2% loading on top of your premium per year for every year you’re aged over 30 and do not have private hospital cover, up to a maximum loading of 70%. Good news is that if you are a little late getting basic hospital cover, once you have had it for 10 continuous years your health insurer can’t continue to charge you the loading. BUY TECHNOLOGY AND GADGETS If they relate directly to your work you can claim them. If the cost of the item is $300 or less you can claim an immediate deduction for the full cost of the item. If the cost is over $300 you will have to depreciate it. As a general rule, desktop computers are depreciated over a period of four years, and laptops over three years. Find out what else is deductible based on your occupation by visiting Ato.gov.au/deductions R @reallivingmag

If you earn $35,454 or less the Federal Government pays 50 cents for every dollar you contribute to your super fund up to a maximum of $500 a year. So pop $1000 in and you’ll receive a $500 tax-free contribution. Put $600 in and the government pays $300 into your super fund. If you earn more than this, then your co-contribution entitlement reduces by 3.33 cents for every dollar you earn over the threshold. It cuts out at $50,454.
