2023 BENEFIT ART AUCTION EXHIBITION

The annual Benefit Art Auction funds the Exhibitions Program, keeping exhibits free and open to the public for nearly 50 years. This year the auction will feature more than 150 works of art generously donated by more than 100 artists. Molly Murphy is the Featured Artist for the 2023 Benefit Art Auction.

The annual Preschool & Kindergarten Exhibition features works from arts-based preschool and kindergarten students at the Lawrence Arts Center. This exhibit offers a delightful glimpse at the origins of imagination, showcasing child-led creative confidence by the community’s youngest artists.

TRANSFERRED INSPIRATION Curated by Hang12

Transferred Inspiration highlights artwork created by Lawrence High School and Free State High School student artists in workshops inspired by the Arts Center artists-in-residence, Twiggy Boden and Taro Takizawa. After working alongside the residents, students develop original works utilizing their newly learned skills and techniques. HANG12 is the Arts Center’s teen curatorial collective that curates this exhibition.

TARO TAKIZAWA | UNDERCURRENTS

2022-23 Printmaking Artist-in-Residence

Taro Takizawa is an artist who focuses on printmaking, wall vinyl installations, drawings and 2D designs. Born in Japan, he makes images connecting his experiences in Japan and the U.S. His work contains western and eastern aesthetics with an appreciation of traditional printmaking processes and mark-making.

LAWRENCE ART GUILD | ALL-MEMBER SHOW

The Lawrence Art Guild has been a staple for artists in the Lawrence Community since 1962. Over time, the Lawrence Art Guild has amassed over 200 members and holds All-Member Shows. These exhibitions provide broader exposure for local artists and encourage community support for artists. This will be the 33rd All-Members Show.

KATHY SUPRENANT | LENS AS A METAPHOR

Science and art are intertwined in Suprenant’s textile creations. In this exhibition, she uses traditional relief printing and an analog-to-digital-to-analog process to create an imaginary world that is magnified, distorted and open to interpretation.

TWIGGY BODEN | A PIG IS STILL A PIG

2022-23 Ceramics Artist-in-Residence

Twiggy Boden is a queer interdisciplinary ceramic artist. Raised in the heart of the Midwest and its conservative systems, Twiggy understands feeling lost and unseen. Their art questions gender constructs and performance through sculpture and wearable art, allowing young queer people to defy the constructs that raised them.

JOHN HULSEY | TRANSCENDENCE: TRUTH IN NATURE

Transcendence: Truth in Nature is a major exhibition of John Hulsey’s multi-year journey into nature and his artistic discoveries made there. Hulsey’s career spans 50 years of continuous creative output, interpreting the world through painting, drawing and sculpture. Hulsey envisions this exhibition as a visual experience that will, through paintings and text, take the visitor on a journey into the natural world surrounding his rural studio, which has transformed both his artistic vision and way of working.

Everyone still gets to live happily ever after, but you’ll never look at “Cinderella” the same again. Written by SYT alumnus Will Averill.

Calling movement creators ages nine through adult for our Student Choreography Showcase!

The Student Choreography Showcase is an event for School of Dance students to showcase self-choreographed dance works in a supportive and encouraging environment. Student choreographers are responsible for selecting and rehearsing their dancers before the show. Register for free at lawrenceartscenter.org! First-time choreographers and those seeking to enrich their skills are encouraged to enroll in Improv & Choreography Composition, CDAC1: 6/5-7/24, MO; 6:30 PM-7:55 PM.

Choreographic Guidelines

• Duration should be at most two minutes and 30 seconds unless approved by the School of Dance Director.

• Choreography, music and costuming must be appropriate for an all-age audience.

• Students are responsible for providing their own costumes and props.

• Choreographers must purchase and provide their own music.

• Choreographers can use Arts Center studio spaces for rehearsals from June 5 - July 24 (subject to availability). For more details, contact dance@lawrenceartscenter.org.

AUDITIONS

Auditions for Lawrence Ballet Theatre Company

SATURDAY, JUNE 10 | 1-3 PM

Location: Studio B, 10th and Mass Studios

Ages 11-18, Equivalent to Ballet IV-VII

Auditions are held each year for company members and apprentices. To be considered for LBT, applicants must attend a formal audition. Pre-registration is required. The deadline to register online is June 7.  Lawrence Ballet Theatre (LBT) is the resident pre-professional ballet company of the Lawrence Arts Center. LBT provides members with extensive training and performance opportunities while broadening connections to the dance community. Led by Artistic Director Cynthia Crews, company members gain experience through performances of classical ballet repertoire and original works. LBT dancers work directly with professional guest choreographers and the artistic director. As a member company of the prestigious Regional Dance America/MidStates, LBT attends the annual RDA/Midstates Festival each year.

Company Members & Apprentices Requirements:

• 11 to 18 years old

• Take three ballet technique classes per week

• Take one additional dance technique class of any style per week

Reductive Mokuhanga is a twist on the traditional Japanese woodblock technique. Students will create vivid multilayered prints using a single block and the incredible kento registration. This is slightly more advanced than the traditional mokuhanga processes; however, beginners are welcome.

Blend Masters: Relief Printing

Participants will work on carving blocks and printing with colorful split fountains (blends of two or more colors) to create relief prints. Some prior relief printing experience would be helpful but optional.

Expect the Unexpected: Collaborative Printmaking

This course will focus on collaboration with your peers to create surprises in your prints that you will get working with others. Our two main collaborative projects include relief printing and monotype with stencils.
