The Allyson V. Leland Staff Mentor of the Year Award: In March 2022, the Volunteer Board unanimously approved to name this award after Allyson Leland, in honor of her 32 years of dedication and leadership as the Director of Volunteer Services at LMH Health. George Rennels, Unit Secretary, Surgery Department Nominated by Dianna Nelson, Beverly Bartscher, Charlotte Sparkes, Denise Richards, Ellen Neis, Mary Freeman, Patty Wells and Suzanne NaPier. We would like to nominate for the LMH Health Staff mentor of the Year 2022, George Rennels, Unit Secretary, Surgery Department for your consideration. Working for LMH Health since 1976 this loyal staff member is a calm, steady and important part in this often fast-paced area of quality healthcare in our hospital. He can often be seen assisting and talking with physicians and nurses as they work to provide their best to their patients. One can also observe George deep in concentration working at his job with his computer and papers while around him are several conversations happening at once. A life-long resident of Lawrence, George knows many people and we are sure, when patients or family members see him in the pre-op area, they are soon comforted at an often nervous time with a smile and nod from a familiar face. What a treasure for our hospital is George Rennels. As volunteers, we depend on George daily for our time to run smoothly. If you are fortunate to work the first shift, you receive a grateful greeting by George. He starts you out right with his dependable list of surgeries and information complete with arrival time of patients he has noted in red ink (so valuable to know if 1, 2 or 3 are due at the same time). George also makes sure the vocera (your connection to hear when surgeries close) he provides is charged and ready to go. George is very dependable and rarely misses a day but, if that happens, there might be a brief scramble by the nurses to provide these items so important to doing our job. During a shift there might be questions from a patient’s family member, i.e. may they now go back to be with the patient before surgery? With all his years of experience George pleasantly answers his phone, usually quickly finds the answer or will politely tell you he will find out the answer and always calls you right back. In all, George goes above and beyond to support our volunteer efforts which creates a very positive experience for us. If you are lucky to be sitting at the Maine Street desk when George leaves for the day, he always gives you a smile and a wave. We thank you for being given the occasion to honor George Rennels in this way. We are but a few representatives of the many grateful volunteers through the years: Beverly Bartscher, Charlotte Sparkes, Denise Richards, Dianna Nelson, Ellen Neis, Mary Freeman, Patty Wells and Suzanne NaPier
