Welcome Aboard W
elcome aboard your flight today with Skippers. Summer has almost come to an end and we now look forward to some cooler months ahead. But, regardless of the weather, Skippers’ dedicated crews will make your journey as comfortable as possible. We are currently carrying out a short-term contract for Murphy Oil, transporting crew to and from Geraldton, to support an offshore drilling program. BNM Australia Group has commenced flights to Cue, working on the tailing dumps from Silver Lake Resources’ previous mining operations. We have successfully re-tendered and continue a decade-long relationship with Western Areas Ltd’s Forrestania Operation and we wish them continued success. Our Fokker 100 operations continue to expand with being the successful tenderer for the AngloGold Ashanti Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, again renewing a relationship of more than 13 years. Skippers has commenced Monday, Wednesday and Friday services to Onslow, which is the home of the large oil and gas Wheatstone Project. There is a lot of infrastructure being carried out in the town and it has a newly completed airport. Due to the closure of the Rosslyn Hill Mining operation at Wiluna, our Monday and Friday flights will go Perth – Meekatharra – Wiluna – Perth. Our Wednesday flight will go Perth – Mt Magnet – Meekatharra – Wiluna – Perth. Skippers’ Kimberley Air Service routes servicing Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek are being well patronised by the local community and provide a fast, comfortable journey to these remote locations. Skippers – in conjunction with St Ives and Lanfranchi Mines – have commenced Monday to Friday services directly to Kambalda, with a very competitive $190 one-way fare. We expect this service to be well patronised. Skippers is providing charter services for the Esperance racing season, as we have done for a number of years. This allows jockeys, stewards and owners to enjoy the race meeting and return to Perth in the evening. This service has contributed to the club enjoying nearcapacity fields in all the races. Just a reminder to all local residents: you are entitled to a special residents’ fare on all Skippers RPT routes. Motive Travel is also promoting a number of tours involving sporting events. Changes to our regular passenger services means there are now two direct flights, Monday and Friday to Mt Magnet. This has been made possible due to the community sharing Ramelius Resources’ crew-change flights, which are being well received. Skippers Road Transport arm continues to be very active in the resource industry. See www.skippers.net.au. Ocean Beach Hotel is offering great deals on accommodation right on North Cottesloe Beach. See www.obh.com.au. Ocean Beach Backpackers also has great facilities right on the beach. See www.oceanbeachbackpackers.com.au. Burswood Car Rentals has a guaranteed pick-up and delivery service, which can be ordered online or directly with them. In most cases they are cheaper than the betterknown brands. We once again remind you that we have wireless internet available free of charge to passengers in the Perth terminal. Please enquire upon checking in. Enjoy your journey with us today. We look forward to you flying with us again soon.

There’s something pretty cool about heading into a venue with 50,000 other people who all love the same thing – music. Late last year, Aly Eveille checked out the Stereosonic festival, which featured a memorable intro’ for Peking Duk.
S
tereosonic 2014 was one of the event’s biggest years yet, with a line-up that included artists such as Calvin Harris, Tiesto, Skrillex and Alesso, to name the most popular few. It’s not hard to see why this is one of the most anticipated festivals at the start of summer in Australia, and one of the few events to continue growing after the shaky decline of many others. Stereosonic really is a celebration of music, with light displays, art installations and a big party vibe. But over the many different stages, the interesting new people to meet, and the new music to discover, the highlight of the day had to be Channel Nine journalist Karl Stefanovic hushing the crowd to introduce Peking Duk. That bloke loves a party! See stereosonic.com.au n

TOTEM IN PERTH!
Crowd favourite Cirque du Soleil kicked off its Australian tour of TOTEM in Sydney late last year, and it is now showing in Melbourne. In April the show will head to Brisbane, with Adelaide and Perth to follow.
C
irque du Soleil celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2014, having brought wonder and delight to close to 150 million spectators in more than 300 cities in about 40 countries. Since starting out with just 20 street performers in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is now a major Quebec-based organisation with close to 4000 employees, including 1300 performing artists from close to 50 different countries. Soleil’s latest show, TOTEM, features a cast of 45 acrobats, actors, musicians and singers, in an uplifting array of athleticism, comedy, emotion and surprising visual effects. Since its world premiere in 2010, more than 3 million people across 25 cities worldwide have been mesmerised by the intimacy and beauty of TOTEM, which won the 2013 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience.

TOTEM marks Cirque du Soleil’s second collaboration with acclaimed writer and director, Robert Lepage, following KÁ at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. The characters evolve on a stage, evoking a giant turtle, the symbol of origin for many ancient civilisations. Inspired by many founding myths, TOTEM illustrates – through a visual and acrobatic language – the evolutionary progress of species. Somewhere between science and legend, TOTEM explores the ties that bind man to other species, his dreams and his infinite potential. Adult tickets start at $99. Concessions apply for children under 13 years, full-time students and pensioners. See www. cirquedusoleil.com/totem.

Inflight Publishing has three level 1 offpeak adult double-passes, valued at $125 per ticket, to TOTEM in Perth on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to give away to three very lucky readers! From L to R: Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson, James May
Q
What you are looking forward to most about the two-day Top Gear Festival in Australia in mid April?
A
I’m looking forward to finding out what it is that’s had James and Jeremy come back every year saying how much fun it was. Finally I’ve been allowed to come and join them for the first time, so I’m looking forward to seeing it for myself. And it’s the perfect opportunity to pitch our two great nations against each other on the track!
Q
Can you reveal some of the highlights attendees will experience at the festival in Sydney?
A
We – together with the Stig – will take on an all-star Aussie team. So we’ll have Shane Jacobson, Steve Pizzati – who were the local [Top Gear Australia] hosts – and a load of motoring talent. So I suppose it’s the motoring equivalent of The Ashes, which some bright spark has dubbed “the crashes” [laughs]! I’ve heard it described as a “power rugby penalty shootout” – how that works I have no idea! I expect there will be a lot of accidents and apparently V8 cricket as well, which we discovered by accident while filming in India, but we are going to improve on it. And from there we’ll have the usual collection of cars you won’t see anywhere else, stunts and driving. It’s going to be enormous!
Q
You, Jeremy and James were spotted filming in central Australia recently for your 22nd series. Can you share anything about that experience?
A
Well I can’t share too much or I will be punched by the rest of the production team. But, yes, we were in the Northern Territory ... in three cars you wouldn’t expect to be driving around there and what we subsequently did with them you definitely wouldn’t expect those three cars to be doing [laughs]. But it was an amazing trip and we reckon it might be the best filming of the forthcoming series. So, stay tuned!
Q
You have been hosting Top Gear with Jeremy and James since 2002. Has there been a favourite episode that’s stood out for you from the past 12 years?
A
START YOUR

The Top Gear Festival returns to Sydney on April 18 and 19, with Jeremy Clarkson, James May and – for the first time – Richard Hammond in tow! Richard spoke to Inflight Publishing’s editor, Hilary Board, about the upcoming event and all things Top Gear.

Issue 38
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
If you were to ask the three of us [which was] our favourite big special, I think it was probably when we went to Botswana and drove across the spine of Africa in three two-wheel-drive cars because that was the first sort of big special that we made – the first time we really rollicked about in our own world. It was the first time that we stepped away from being a more traditional cast and became a show that was about using cars. That was tremendous!
Q
And aside from the crash you endured in 2006, which would you say has been one of the hairiest episodes?
A
Well being brain damaged is pretty bloody hairy! But beyond that I’d say the first time I got thrown into a car in a tank of water and had to see what happened. I’ve done that so many times since, in mini vans, cars, lakes, in the sea, but it’s always alarming when you are sitting in the car and it fills up with water and you have to wait until it’s finally full before you can get out. Also, for the new series ... I lose a bet on the show and am strapped to the top of a stunt plane. And because I called the pilot an “old man” he goes absolutely berserk and scares the bejesus out of me!
Q
Speaking of daring feats, you interviewed stuntman Evel Knievel not long before he passed away in late 2007. What was he like?
A
He was amazing! I made a complete program about him, so we spent more than a week following him around. He was bonkas – what an incredible life! The guy came from Butte, Montana – middle of nowhere – and created in himself one of the world’s first international brands. And [what he did] was certainly not based on science. He and his manager would arrive at whichever football stadium they were going to be doing their stunt at that day and stick a finger in the air and guess!
Q
There’s a war that’s raged for many decades in Australia – dividing car lovers along the lines of being Holden fans or Ford fans... Would you admit to standing on one side of the fence rather than the other?
A
No, I genuinely wouldn’t ... but I’ve filmed in Australia enough to know that you have to come down on one side or the other or the entire population will hate you [laughs]. I do have an old 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT, so I probably should come down on the side of Ford.
Q
Is there any new motoring technology you’ve heard about recently that has really made you go “wow!”?
A
Yeah! I think a lot of the variations on the theme of electric cars – hybrids – but they are slowly balancing out the range extending the engine. I think the BMW i8 is a big wow. The Tesla Model S is an amazing car. We are often asked, “What are we going to do when electric cars come in?” As though that means the end of [Top Gear], but I don’t see why it would. In fact, what it means is that ... there’s a lot more to talk about. Driver-less cars, driver-less trucks, these are all fascinating things.
Q
Of all the cars and 4WDs launching in 2015, which are you the most excited about?
A
The new Land Rover Discovery and the Defender, but whether or not that’s going to be in 2015, I don’t know. I’m looking forward to seeing the Porsche GT3RS very much and getting to grips with it. Also, the new Mustang was out in 2014, but we haven’t had it [in Britain] yet, so I’m looking forward to seeing that as well.
Q
Top Gear’s 22nd series launched on January 26... What else do you have planned for the next six to 12 months?
A
I want to spend more time at home ... and see my two young daughters. Top Gear takes an awful lot of time to make. Not so long ago we would just take a hatchback and drive it around the Cotswolds to make a show, but now it has to be driving about in Australia, to three of us there for a week [laughs]. So it’s all become a lot more involved, which leaves very little time for anything else. I’ve got a couple of ideas for other [shows] I’d like to make in 2015, but first we need to see what space Top Gear’s going to occupy. I think of Top Gear as my job and anything else is secondary to that and I may struggle to fit in around it, so I’ll see how we go.

A WORD FROM TICKETS JEREMY AND JAMES... Jeremy Clarkson said, “For the first time all three of us will be there. So bring a pair of binoculars if you want to see Hammond and a calendar to measure May’s lap times.” James May said, “We love coming to Sydney for the Top Gear Festival, and this year will be better than ever because, for the first time, we're bringing professor Richard Hammond and his enormous intellect! To balance that out, we'll have to stick a big Holden Ute in there somewhere, doing circle work and making smoke, driven by a proper Brocky. Have I got that right?"
A move to the Easter school holidays means the Top Gear Festival can be enjoyed by fans of all ages, and it runs from 9am to 6pm each day. Ticket prices start at just $49 for adults, and family packages are available from $119. Book grandstand seats at Sydney Motorsport Park early if you want to ensure the best view of all the action. Because the process utilises in situ materials, it removes the need for borrow pits and delivers substantial savings over conventional techniques. DAMP DOWN COMMUNITY CONCERNS ABOUT FUGITIVE DUST GRT dust control products provide a powerful alternative to regular watering. They are highly effective on roads subject to excessive blown-in or tracked-on dust or spillage from trucks or hauling equipment. As a dust suppression treatment, applied just once it can last for up to three months, saving precious rural water and slashing road maintenance traffic.
TAKE PRESSURE OFF THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT GRT dust control and road stabilisation products make your operations leaner and greener for the long haul. They not only vastly reduce your usage of natural resources like water and road building materials, they also lessen environmental impacts from fugitive dust, erosion, and borrow pits. AND THE In late January, Justin Bressan was named the winner of the XXXX Island competition! Inflight Publishing’s editor, Hilary Board, caught up with the lucky fella’ to find out more.
Justin with a nice catch!
Tell us a bit about yourself... What do you do and where do you work? I’m originally from the Gold Coast but I now live in central Queensland. I’m involved in the mobilisation and provision of remote workforce accommodation in Emerald and the Arcadia Valley. What do you get up to in your spare time? I enjoy spending time with my family, fishing and crabbing and having a good laugh with friends. Why did you enter the XXXX Island competition last year? Who wouldn’t want to win a trip to XXXX Island! I thought it would be an awesome experience.

Tell us about your entry. One of my mates [Antony Jozsef] was having a bit of bad luck last year [he hit a rock bar and sunk his boat while crabbing, stood on some oysters, then forgot to put his park break on and damaged his car], so I entered his story into the competition in the hope I could take him away to XXXX Island. You’ve got to be in it to win it!
Justin’s mate Antony Jozsef
And what was your reaction when you found out you were the lucky XXXX Island winner? At first I thought it was a stitch-up by one of my mates, but then it started to sink in that it was real... Woo hoo! Have you notified your three mates yet? What was the reaction? Yes. They thought I was only joking but then I showed them the email confirmation. They’ve already packed their bags [laughs]! How do you plan to spend your three nights on XXXX Island in April or May? I’m looking forward to exploring the island and the surrounds with some fishing, relaxing and a few laughs with my mates. Anything else you would like to say? Just thanks to everyone involved in running this competition. We can’t wait to go to XXXX Island! You are very welcome Justin! Enjoy!

Moroccan c i g a M Whether you have an adventurous spirit, or just want to enjoy the beauty and wonder of Morocco’s rich landscape, you’re sure to enjoy yourself. Story and image by: Lucy Mullinger Main image supplied.
Fes The medieval town of Fes was founded in the ninth century. The old medina (or village) consists of a maze of narrow streets, which are often crowded during the day, when the locals are busy selling their wares to tourists and villagers alike. People-watching is an enjoyable past-time while walking through the streets, but watch out for the odd donkey or mule rushing along with a multitude of bags, leather or food items in tow! If you want to get a taste of the “real Fes”, head to what locals call the “old medina”, which houses the leather tanneries. The largest tannery, known as the Chouara Tannery, has been home to the production of leather goods for more than a thousand years and is still going strong. Tourists are given the opportunity to watch from above as the tanners work on

the leather, which is placed in vats of dye. It’s a smelly and labour-intensive job, which is handed down from generation to generation.
The Sahara Have you ever wanted to sit on the back of a camel, Arabian style? Well you’re in luck! Just a few hours’ drive from Fes is the arid desert. A bit further down the coast you’ll find Ouarzazate, which is where a lot of desert excursions begin and where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed in the early 1960s. If you like the idea of camping out in the Sahara, you can do that too. And you can even get a camel to take you out to your own Bedouin tent. This rather glamorous style of camping (known as “glamping”) makes for a very comfortable night, where all your needs are met. It’s also a great way to meet other tourists and learn more about the Sahara. Marrakech A trip to Morocco isn’t really the same without visiting Marrakech, a seven-hour train ride from Fes. Head to the main square in the old medina, and watch as snake charmers and monkey tamers show off their exotic pets. If you’re up for a camel ride and didn't get the chance to do it in the Sahara, there are a range of camels to ride further out of the medina for a price.

Accommodation If you’re not into “glamping” in the desert, you might want to stay in one of Morocco’s dars or riads. These are traditional homes that are usually very uniform from the outside, with only a front door to welcome you. Once you enter a dar you will find yourself in a hallway that takes you to the centre of the building. The central courtyard is surrounded by the living quarters, which can be up to four storeys high. In a riad, there will be a garden in the central courtyard. They are built so that no one can see in, but the inhabitants can still see out. Many of the dars and riads available for tourist accommodation have been refurbished to their former glory and showcase the internal beauty of these homes. One such dar is the Dar Roumana in Fes (www. darroumana.com). It is a beautiful example of Moroccan architecture, run by a French chef and his Australian wife, Vanessa. The couple will treat you to a French-Moroccan fusion meal in the courtyard, with a selection of fine Moroccan wines to choose from. Once you are settled, Vanessa will give you a map of the area and share some tips on how to survive in the medina. She can also assist you with organising adventures in and around Fes. Nothing can prepare you for cities such as Amsterdam and Antwerp, where the conservative and controversial collide.

O
n stepping outside Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, you are greeted by Amsterdam’s version of the Hollywood sign, which is a popular photo op’ for tourists. The two-metre-wide by 24-metrelong sign proclaims “I Amsterdam”, a collective catchphrase used by the community and an icon of the city. To get to Dam Square – in the centre of town – avoid costly taxis or the long lines for buses, as a train is the cheapest and fastest method. The Dam is where the 400-year-old Royal Palace sits, gazing over the thousands of people who pass below it, along with a 22-metre-tall white stone pillar named The National Monument, a maze of tram lines and many daring Dutch locals riding bicycles. It’s hectic, to say the least! Get a table for dinner in the Dam to help you get your bearings. Then you are ready to visit some of the local hangouts and adventure down the laneways off the Dam, which feature

amazing shopping and delicious Dutch food. Although you’re surrounded by buildings that are centuries old, it’s invigorating to wander through the corridors of the city – among tall cottage-like stone buildings – to shop at some of the biggest retail stores in the world. But, let’s face it, you can shop anywhere! What you can’t do everywhere is find authentic Vlaamse friet – a serving of traditional Dutch French fries served in a paper cone with a bucket of mayonnaise on top. Yum! You also can’t wander across a canal and sit down in a local coffee shop to sample legalised marijuana at most other cities in the world! It’s a very strange feeling to walk into a smoke-filled room just off the street and be offered a pre-rolled joint off the “marijuana menu”. You can choose from a happy high, a mellow high, or an intense high. Then there’s a selection of marijuana, given names such as Master Kush, Pineapple
The best way to get around Amsterdam
Chunk and L.A Confidential. If you choose to cross the experience off the bucket list, make sure you remain inside the cafe. While it’s legal to smoke in designated coffee shops, it’s a controversial issue in other parts of the city and can be offensive to locals. Hotels typically will not tolerate marijuana in their rooms. Another experience on the bucket list for many is Amsterdam’s famous red-light district (or De Wallen, as it’s known to the Dutch). This network of alleyways contains about 300 one-room cabins, which are rented by prostitutes offering their services from behind
a glass door. You’ll see many shapes, sizes and ages, and hear some of the ladies talking to or brushing away those who pass their windows. It’s definitely an eye opener! Live sex shows, risqué adult stores and sex museums are just the beginning, and the vast array of people visiting from all around the world is astonishing. But don’t forget that there is a more conservative and very charming side to Amsterdam as well. Hire a bike and brave the city traffic as you make your way down to Vondelpark to sunbathe on the pond’s bright green banks. Here you can sit down to a fancy lunch at the famous Vondelpark3 restaurant, which is housed in a historical old pavilion that was recently reopened to the public. The park’s 48 hectares of lush green trees, sculptures and bike paths are worth seeing – there’s a reason 10 million people visit it each year! The Anne Frank House is another great place to absorb some of the city’s history. It’s a well-maintained biographical museum that teaches visitors about the young Jewish wartime diarist, Anne Frank. The house exhibits the exact hiding place where the writer stayed while experiencing the persecution and discrimination of the Holocaust. Make sure you buy tickets to this in advance and select the date and time of your visit, so you can sneak past the kilometre-long queue and go right into the museum! The next stop on our itinerary was Antwerp
While navigating our way through the city, we noticed the many different languages of the people of Antwerp, as the country lines numerous borders. If you are familiar with Dutch, French or German, life is a breeze here! Religion is predominant in Antwerp as well, with many Jews donning their black kolpik headwear as they walk the streets. When it comes to dining in Antwerp, I suggest visiting Meir: a giant shopping and dining precinct. The streets in Meir come alive at night and the Absinthe Bar at Brasserie Appelmans is known for serving some of the best cocktails in Belgium. But we had a mission in mind: to attend the famous music festival Tomorrowland. To get there we ventured 17 kilometres out of Antwerp to the suitably named town of Boom. Tomorrowland is filled with people from all corners of the globe wearing their nation’s flags and chanting war cries. This was a production unlike anything I’d ever seen before. There were characters on stilts, stages in the middle of ponds, bubbles flowing above our heads and pyrotechnics bursting from the stages. Everything was themed with Euroesque creativity. And with more than 400,000 people in attendance over the three-day event, the organisers weren’t doing anything half-heartedly. Yes, another one off the bucket list, and a definite must-do for any music lover. See www.iamsterdam.com/en or www. visitantwerpen.be for more information. n
Antwerp’s Meir
in Belgium, which is a four-hour train ride from Amsterdam. We arrived at the station and were greeted by the grand entrance hall of Antwerpen-Centraal – a great introduction to this ancient city! On making our way to our hotel, one thing became clear: we were in the diamond district. The majority of the world’s diamonds pass through Antwerp each year, more than 80 per cent, in fact. Antwerp is also a surprising stop for fashionfocused travellers and has been known as the “triumphant shopping city” since the 16th century. The pedestrian streets are lined with luxury stores and historic dwellings, and bustling shopping centres are tucked behind every corner.

A D V ERTO R I A L • January 16, 2014: a 26-year-old exploration worker collapsed on a mining lease in remote bush near Newman and was found dead the following day. • January 23, 2011: a 35-year-old truck driver died near Wiluna after his truck became bogged and he walked 30 kilometres.
HIGH DANGER Remote Western Australia is infamous yet again for its extreme temperatures, believed to have been a major contributing factor in the deaths of two travellers in the first weeks of January. The fatalities seem to have occurred under similar circumstances to previous remote-area travel deaths and near-misses in WA.
I
n remote Western Australia, documented heat stress-related incidents and deaths of travellers – both workers and general commuters alike – have generally occurred in the summer months, most commonly in early January. These deaths include:
two kilometres from Windidda Station, east of Wiluna, after his car broke down and he walked almost 48 kilometres; • January 16, 2015: a 39-year-old truck driver died after he walked almost 25 kilometres in 46C heat after his vehicle became bogged on Mileura Station in the Murchison;
• January 7, 2015: a 60-year-old Leonora man was found deceased by the roadside
• December 2009: Two workers were travelling to Tjuntjuntjara, 600 kilometres north-east of Kalgoorlie, and after unknowingly taking a wrong turn they drove for 23 hours before stumbling across a remote roadhouse, where they found assistance. Common threads across some of these cases are that travellers left without: • Communication equipment (and instructions for use) suitable for use in remote areas (e.g. satellite phone and UHF radio); • An emergency locator beacon with GPS; • An emergency action plan specific to their route; • Hard-copy maps and directions; • A travel plan that had been communicated to others, with intended route and estimated time of arrival. February is a particularly high-risk time for employees working in remote areas of WA, due to extreme temperatures. For some guidance on how to ensure the safety of your employees working in isolation and remote areas over summer, please see www.explorationonline.com.au and click on the seasonal FREE document link. n

A DIFFERENT perspective
BY: Luke Baker
I
was reading a book recently called The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey, and it sums up perspectives perfectly. One day, Stephen was in a fairly crowded carriage on a subway in New York on his way home from work. Two young children in the carriage were being particularly loud and obnoxious and were really starting to annoy other commuters. This went on for quite some time and Stephen and the others were getting frustrated – especially as the children’s father just sat there, staring into space, as if he didn’t care how much his children were annoying other commuters. After a while, Stephen decided he’d had enough of this behaviour (he’d had a long day at work) so he leant across and said to the father that his children were being quite
Luke with his family
painful to the other people on the train, and could he perhaps get them to calm down a bit. The father apologised to him and added that he hadn’t really noticed. He then went on to say that they had just come from the hospital, where the children’s mother had passed away. They were in a state of shock and probably didn’t know how to act ... and that’s perhaps why they were misbehaving so much. As you can imagine, Stephen then saw the situation in a whole new light. He went from being quite aggravated to feeling complete empathy. His perspective had been changed so much that he then asked the father if there was some way he could help. I wanted to share this story to encourage everyone to stop and think for a second before judging a situation as you see it. Could there be something beneath the surface that you have no idea about that’s perhaps causing someone to think and act in a certain way? If a workmate is suddenly cranky and telling you off for an unknown

reason, perhaps something difficult has been happening in their family life. Or, if your partner doesn’t seem themselves on the phone, perhaps they’ve had a bad day at home or at work. Instead of jumping to conclusions and thinking that someone should just quit FIFO if they’re unhappy, maybe we should consider that we don’t know all the facts. For example, one couple I heard about have a really sick daughter who requires 24/7 care. The father works away so they can afford treatment and ensure the mum can stay at home full-time to care for her. Perhaps we could all try to see the world from a different perspective – or remind ourselves that we never really know what’s going on in other people’s lives. Maybe then we would be more understanding and empathetic, wouldn’t get so wound up, and would all be a little happier.

Are you forever asking your partner where all your money goes? Stop the blame games and get financially fit. By: psychologist Angie Willcocks
W
hen couples fall in love and decide to marry, they often just assume that their partner shares their views about money. But often this isn’t the case, and money is one of the main topics couples argue about, no matter how much they earn. I’m frequently fascinated by all the different ways people think about and handle money, and I sometimes wonder how any couple ever makes it work! There are all sorts of different models that couples can adopt to handle their money: from totally separate accounts (and no idea how much the other earns) to one shared account with all of the money pooled. There are also variations on where the money comes from, who earns more, and whether or not both partners work outside the home. The situation often changes when children come along, and this is a time when many couples start arguing about money. In mining families with kids, the model I most often see involves one partner earning most or all of the family income. This situation is usually necessary because of the logistics of one person working away (or the family living remotely) and possibly also because of the above-average incomes earned in the mining and resources sector. The argument I often hear is centred on the question of “where does all the money go?” It might seem like a generalisation but
I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard a husband say, “I earn all the money and she spends it all” or “I have no idea what happens to all the money I earn”. If this sounds familiar, read on! As I said previously, I sometimes wonder how couples manage to get along financially. Most of us don’t get taught specifically about money and finances as children, which means we generally take our cues from the environment we're brought up in. This might be good, but often it isn’t. Even with the very best of intentions, parents can “teach” some unhelpful beliefs and behaviours about money. Also, a lot of emotions are caught up with money, probably because of its survival value. I’ve seen the most outwardly sensible people have very strange beliefs and behaviours about money: from the wealthy person who
worries excessively about spending money, to the debt-laden successful businessman who thinks he deserves the very best of everything money can buy.
Think about your own beliefs and behaviours One of the first steps in reducing arguments about money is to think about your own beliefs and behaviours. It’s surprisingly simple, yet many people do not do this. Think back on your history with money, and perhaps write down your thoughts. Consider questions such as: did I feel rich or poor as a kid? Where did I learn about money? Did I grow up in a house with a lot, enough or not enough money? How was money talked about in my home? Was money important to my parents? Next, think about how you approach money [Continued on page 30]

“A lot of emotions are caught up with money, probably because of its survival value.” now. What sorts of beliefs do you have about money as an adult? How do your childhood experiences with money affect you now? Ideally, when you’ve done this, you should ask your partner to do the same and then take some time to talk together about it. I know this sounds like a really heavy, serious thing to do, but it doesn’t have to be. Try starting the conversation by saying something like, “I’ve been thinking about why we argue so much about money, and trying to understand my share of what’s going on.” There is often a lot of blaming and criticising in arguments about money, and this exercise can start to shift that pattern and encourage some understanding and compassion for each other.
Some other tips are: • Set shared financial goals, and make sure they’re SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based goals. • If you work away and feel as though you don’t know or have any say in where the money goes, take responsibility and get informed! In my experience, the person who works away can have an unrealistic view of how much it costs to run a house, and frequently underestimates how much basic living costs. Let’s face it, there isn’t much to spend money on at the mine site! If you never go grocery shopping, do it next time you’re home and take a list (prepared by the usual household shopper) of all that is needed for the week (including nappies, loo paper, washing powder, dishwasher tablets and dog food etc.). This simple exercise can be very powerful for some couples. Similarly, if you never buy gifts (this is often a woman’s job, especially in a FIFO family) find out how many birthday presents are needed for the year, and approximately how much is spent on each person. • Often the person at home tries to cover up or avoid how much things cost, for fear of an argument, but this doesn’t help in the long run. It’s more effective to be upfront
30
Issue 38
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
about what is being spent where (by the way, you may need to do your homework first for this, because many of us actually don’t know where all our money goes from week to week!). • Go over your bank accounts for the past three to six months (depending on how often you pay bills) and record everything you have spent and what you’ve spent it on. You can do this individually or together as a couple. Initially this exercise is just to collect information, but it can also lead to reductions in spending in relatively simple ways. I recently did this exercise myself and was shocked to see how much I was spending each month at my local supermarket, mostly because I had fallen into the busy person’s trap of running to grab bits and pieces several times a week (and of course grabbing extra bits and pieces each time!). I changed this immediately, by getting more organised with my grocery shopping, and very easily reduced my monthly grocery bill. • Be clear about what you see as important in life and be willing to have the hard conversations with your partner. I recently talked to a mother who desperately wanted her kids to be privately educated. Her husband didn't share this goal, and she knew he’d object if he knew how much the fees were. So she didn’t tell him how much the fees were and just sent their child along to the private school. The husband was constantly hitting the roof and asking “where is all the money going and why aren't we getting ahead?” and she would just shrug her shoulders. It would have been much better to be upfront about her deep desire for their child to be privately educated, because her avoidance actually led to mistrust within the relationship. • We all know that we’re meant to have a financial budget and we’re meant to stick to it. But in my experience very few people do, so I won’t bother telling you that you have to! There is, however, a fact of financial life that we can’t avoid: you have to spend less than
you earn to get ahead. If you spend more than you earn you will accumulate “dumb” debt, like credit cards. Be brave and go over your expenses and income and see what the numbers are. Hopefully you come out in the black but, if not, you’ll have to look for ways to spend less. If this doesn’t seem possible, get immediate financial advice (i.e. MyBudget. com.au). • I have noticed that it works well for couples to have three bank accounts: one joint account that the big, main, family expenses come out of (like the mortgage, household bills etc) and two individual accounts for personal expenses. Some couples find it works to put the same percentage of their income into the joint account. If there is only one income earner, the non-income earner should still have access to their “own” money. • Seeing a financial planner can help. This is really scary for many people, especially those who haven’t been brought up this way. But most financial planners understand the strong emotions that go along with money, and a good financial advisor will be kind and supportive, not critical and snobby. As with any professional, shop around until you find one you like. Make sure they are accredited. • Stop blaming and criticising each other and work together to get this issue sorted out. Leave past mistakes in the past and start from today. • Finally, if you really can’t talk about any of this with your partner, and you’re frequently arguing about money, please get some counselling sooner rather than later. To talk with a trained volunteer telephone counsellor at any time of the day or night, call Lifeline on 13 11 14. To contact the info line at beyondblue: national depression initiative, phone 1300 22 4636.

TACKLE OUT
HIDDEN
As well as a couple of local impoundments, which hold big yellowbelly and cod, we were lucky enough to fish a beautiful spot called Little River, just to the south of the town. It flowed through some of the most iconic Aussie bush we've ever seen and its clear, slowflowing pools were full of hungry Murray cod. Just watch out for the snakes! Dundee Beach
Dundee Beach, NT West of Darwin, along a fair stretch of dusty road, you’ll find Dundee Beach. It consists of an outback pub, a bloke with a tractor who launches your boat and that’s about it! The fishing from Dundee is first class, with bluewater trolling producing sailfish and mackerel. The nearby Finniss River also has heaps of barramundi, crocs and big mud crabs. Texas, Qld We never even knew there was a Texas in Australia until a few years ago, when we travelled there to target Murray cod. Texas is well west of Brisbane on the Queensland and New South Wales border. There are several little rivers, all of which are loaded with big cod, some up to 30 kilograms or more! We caught lots of little ones. Just look out for the snakes.
Hook, Line & Sinker
co-hosts, Andrew Hart and Nick Duigan, reveal their top fishing spots in Australia’s outback.
Yarrawonga
Corroboree Billabong, Northern Territory This is our number one location and it’s only a couple of hours out of Darwin. But you have to visit it in the dry season because otherwise it’s flooded. Corroboree gives you a taste of everything the territory has to offer: spectacular water lilies, birds, water buffalo and heaps and heaps of massive crocs! The barramundi fishing is also first class, as is casting little lures into the lilies for the prehistoric-looking saratoga.
Peter Faust Dam, Queensland (and all the other impoundments in central and northern Queensland) Barramundi are a true Aussie and outback icon and since the inception of stocking these native fish in big freshwater impoundments, catching a big one has never been easier. In food-rich lakes, such as Peter Faust (just west of Proserpine), barra’ grow to enormous sizes – more than a metre long. It’s great fun fishing in a clear lake, as is getting a bite from a fish that’s more than 20 kilograms! Yarrawonga, Victoria It’s only about a three-hour drive from Melbourne, but up near the border of New South Wales you’ll find Yarrawonga and Lake Mulwala. It’s a big, flooded part of the mighty Murray River but mostly only shallow and full of dead timber, which make the perfect snags for Murray cod. We’ve caught plenty of them for the show using spinnerbaits. For the bigger ones, the best tip is to go during the colder months.

BMW Motorrad recently launched three gutsy new 2015 models at the Intermot Show in Cologne, Germany.
M
any sports bike and racing fanatics travelled to Cologne in anticipation of the world premiere of BMW Motorrad’s latest version of the S 1000 RR supersports machine. The original RR redefined the meaning of “supersport” when it was launched and the latest version has moved the goalposts yet again, with even higher levels of power, safety and usability. Those who are lucky enough to ride the formidable new RR will feel all the changes instantly, but even on paper the figures speak volumes. Output is now 199 bhp – an increase of 6 bhp – while max torque is now 130 Nm. The overall weight figure has been shaved by four kilograms, making the new RR even more agile at just 204 kilograms fully fuelled – and including ABS. Naturally, all the control systems have been optimised and

adjusted to offer better handling and an even more engaging riding experience. And last but not least, a new exterior makes this ultimate sports bike instantly recognisable as the 2015 RR.
expressive than its predecessor. This latest model has also been reduced to the essentials for purist roadster fans who want to see every component on display.
Two other models were unveiled at Intermot – the R 1200 R and the R 1200 RS – which are more in keeping with BMW’s traditional format. The flat-twin boxer engine on the new R 1200 R is the same water-cooled DOHC drive unit that already powers the R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure, as well as the R 1200 RT and the new R 1200 RS. It produces 92 kW (125 hp) at 7750 rpm and develops its peak torque of 125 Nm (92 lb ft) at 6500 rpm.
The new R 1200 RS sports boxer marks 28 years since the first R 100 RS, which introduced the world to the concept of a BMW boxer with serious sporting potential, combined with excellent ergonomics, handling and weather protection. This latest RS (Reise Sport = Travel Sport) continues this proud tradition yet unlocks fascinating new dimensions with its 125 hp water-cooled engine, relaxed seating position, perfect wind and weather protection and choice of riding modes.
The new R 1200 R upholds BMW’s tradition of comfort, dynamism and capability, at the same time as putting a new slant on the alluring blend. The 2015 model is clearly more dynamic and
The S 1000 RR and R 1200 R are expected to land in Australia in March, and the R 1200 RS in mid 2015. See bmwmotorrad.com.au.

FIGHTING FIT
MAKE RESOLUTIONS

By: Steve Roberts

very year, without fail, many of us say: “Next year I am going to give up smoking” or “I’m going to get fit”. This decision is usually made some time around January 1. Here are some interesting stats from The University of Scranton’s Journal of
Clinical Psychology 2014. TOP FIVE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR 2014 1. Lose weight 2. Get organised 3. Spend less, save more 4. Enjoy life to the fullest 5. Stay fit and healthy Length of Resolutions

Coming into autumn, if you’ve found you have already hit a few speed bumps in terms of committing to your 2015 resolutions to be fitter and healthier, here are some tips to help you succeed. 1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT FRIENDS In 2007, two US social scientists, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School, and James Fowler of the University of California, published the results of a study titled “The Spread of Obesity in a Large Social Network over 32 years”. This research revealed that people who are friends with people who are obese have an increased chance of becoming obese themselves.
trackable goals. Carefully think about them, write them down, do the work and then re-visit your SMART goals to create longterm success. Outcome goals focus strictly on success. However, when it comes to the goal-setting process, I would suggest adding in process goals – such as stagebased and controllable goals – with your outcome goals. 3. TRACK YOUR RESULTS Take a few measurements of your physique (e.g. your waist measurement), do some fitness tests and snap a picture of yourself. I guarantee that if you do this you will work harder knowing that you are going to be retested again in one month. Track your results initially, then at the mid-point and at the end. 4. PICK AN EVENT I have always been more motivated to train if I pick an activity such as a boxing match or a milestone event. Make sure you pick an activity that is something you like and not something you think you should do. When you have a goal day and an activity you enjoy, you will be more likely to achieve it. Check local fun runs, events your gym may run, or sporting club events. Once you have made your choice, work at it, tell your friends, and you’ll soon be jumping out of bed every day to get yourself there.
2. INDENTIFY AND SET PROCESS AND OUTCOME GOALS Have you heard of the SMART goal process? SMART goals are: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound or

5. FIND A NEW GYM OR AN APP Find a fresh place to workout or new training buddy from the app store. Avoiding certain people at gyms or hating the noise from these gatherings is a negative energy you don’t need when you have important goals to achieve. Investing in new shoes, a shirt, sweatband or latest app training buddy is a good start. BONUS TIP On a final note, write out your resolutions and pin them up on your bedroom wall, fridge, work desk or outlook calendar. These words are your contract to you. If you can visualise being proactive about your health, avoiding negative people, being a little selfish and loving yourself more in 2015, you have taken the first step. Fear of failure can stop some, but if you never try, you’ll never learn.

the juicer or blender and drink them chilled. (See www.youthfulhabits.com for a variety of power-packed juice and smoothie recipes.) • Swap commercial breakfast cereals for Bircher muesli or oats. Sweeten these with fresh fruit or a dash of raw honey. Oats are lower in GI, keeping you full for longer. • Poach, scramble or boil organic eggs and add some salmon, spinach and mushrooms. Serve on wholemeal toast.
FUEL UP Do you often feel tired? Does your energy dip dramatically in the afternoon? If your life is regularly disrupted by fatigue and you want to take action, start by looking at your diet and, if necessary, change what you eat and how you eat it. By: Belinda Crestani
HEALTHY BREAKFAST TO KICKSTART YOUR DAY There is logic behind the saying “breakfast like a kid, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper”. If you start the day with a decent breakfast, your body will be getting the energy it needs early on. CHANGE YOUR EATING HABITS Although the bonuses of eating in a balanced way do not come instantly, if you commit to eating the fresh foods suggested here (and avoid foods that are high in fat and full of sugar) you can expect to notice a marked difference in your energy levels within a couple of weeks. A diet that makes you feel more energetic is based on natural, wholesome, nutritious foods, such as: • Fresh fruits high in natural sugars, such as pears, kiwi fruit, apples and berries.
42
Issue 38
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
• Vegetables such as peas, spinach, cabbage and onions. • Oily fish, poultry, and lean red meat, such as beef and veal. • Nuts, brown rice, seeds, pulses, wheatgerm and wholegrains. • Foods that contain water-soluble vitamins B and C and minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc. ENERGY-BOOSTING MEAL SUGGESTIONS For breakfast: • Home-made fruit juices, and milk- or yoghurt-based smoothies are energyboosting alternatives to commercially prepared drinks. Choose sweet fruits that have a naturally high sugar content, such as apples, banana or berries, then add some protein powder, some spinach leaves, kale or avocado (if you’re feeling up to it), and a cup of unsweetened almond milk, yoghurt, coconut water or filtered water. Switch on
For lunch: • A sandwich loaded with your favourite healthy fillers, such as organic chicken or turkey, spinach leaves, white cheese (such as cottage, feta, goat, haloumi, mozzarella or ricotta), eggs, tahini and wholegrain mustard. Replace white bread with wholemeal. For dinner: • Stir-fries are quick and easy to prepare. Add vegetables and lean meat to a bed of brown – rather than white – rice. Use organic, wheat-free, low-salt soy sauce as the dressing and sprinkle with sea salt and fresh herbs. • Enjoy some fish – trout, tuna, wild salmon (fresh or canned in springwater) – with vegetables or a salad dressed in naturally fermented vinegars, such as apple cider or balsamic. Drizzle over some cold-pressed oil, such as macadamia, olive, sesame or walnut. For snacks: • One to three pieces of fruit a day. • Fresh raw nuts, such as almonds, cashews, macadamias and walnuts. • Plain, preservative- and sugar-free crackers and crispbreads. • Dairy-, preservative- and sugar-free dips, such as beetroot, hummus, pesto and tahini. ONE LAST TIP Every meal, try to eat fibre, protein and some vegies. 1 red capsicum 1 bunch coriander fresh lime chardonnay vinegar extra virgin olive oil salt and pepper 100g crispy shallots Directions Put all the prawn marinade ingredients into a mortar and pestle and crush into a pastelike consistency. Add the peeled prawns to the marinade and then place in the fridge to chill for a minimum of two hours. While the prawns are marinating, prepare the sous slaw. Finely slice the red cabbage, savoy cabbage, red onion, daikon radish and capsicum and put into a large mixing bowl. Pick the fresh

Allow the sous slaw to rest for 30 minutes, covered in the fridge. Cook the prawns on the barbecue flat plate for two minutes either side. Dress your serving plates with the sous slaw, place the prawns around the slaw and top with more fresh coriander and the crispy shallots. For an added touch, cut two limes in half, put them on the barbecue flesh-side down for two minutes to caramelise, and then serve with the prawns. Directions Slice the heirloom tomatoes into various natural shapes and season and dress with olive oil, salt and pepper. Add the chopped chives and set aside while the fish is being cooked. To cook the fish, heat a nonstick pan (preferably) on a medium heat and season the skin of the barramundi liberally with salt. Once the pan is hot, add the vegetable oil and place the barramundi skin side down in the pan. Cook until golden brown, then gently turn the fish over to complete the cooking (approx three minutes). Set aside to rest on a paper towel. To serve, decorate the plate with the yoghurt and salsa
verde. Top with the dressed tomato mixture and decorate with herbs, such as basil, dill and even rocket. Sit the cooked fish on top of the tomato and herbs and serve immediately. For the salsa verde Ingredients 1 bunch basil 1 bunch mint 1 bunch coriander 1 bunch dill 40g capers 40g gherkins 10g anchovies 3 cloves garlic 2tsp Dijon mustard salt and pepper 180ml olive oil Directions Combine all the ingredients in a food processor or blender and process until a fine green sauce forms. WHAT A
JOKE!
You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America’s Cup, France is accusing the US of arrogance, Germany doesn’t want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named Bush, Dick, and Colin. Need I say more? I don’t get high, but sometimes I wish I did. That way, when I messed up in life I would have an excuse. But right now there’s no rehab for stupidity. If you can keep your son off the pipe and your daughter off the pole, you’re ahead of the game.
This month we laughed along with comedian and actor Chris Rock.
We got so much food in America that we’re allergic to food. Allergic to food! Hungry people ain’t allergic to shit. You think anyone in Rwanda’s got a f---ing lactose intolerance? I can’t cook, but I have a nice book of menus.
Have you been watching American Idol? They have Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul judgin’ the singin. Paula Abdul? Gettin’ Paula Abdul to judge a singin’ contest is like gettin’ Christopher Reeve to judge a dance contest! Never go to clubs with metal detectors. Sure it feels safe inside. But what about all those guys waiting outside with guns? They know you ain’t got one. If a woman tells you she’s 20 and looks 16, she’s 12. If she tells you she’s 26 and looks 26, she’s damn near 40. You won't be able to take your eyes off the next four presenters: Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz. Gun control? We need bullet control! I think every bullet should cost $5000. Because if a bullet cost $5000, we wouldn’t have any innocent bystanders. n

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.
