Welcome to Paradise
O
n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterranean-like abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the movie-making capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award6
winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and world-class restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of five Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, John Cleese, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia LouisDreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe and Jonathan Winters; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield, Barnaby Conrad and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors and Andy Granatelli; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll

Wendy Foster Santa Barbara’s Fashion Icon
B
orn in New York, Wendy Foster grew up in Santa Barbara, spending her summer vacations at her mother’s home in Massachusetts. She always had an independent streak and ended up leaving home at age 17, not returning home until her late twenties. She attended college in Mexico, Massachusetts and Paris. During this period of time she really got the travel bug and decided to get more education by traveling the world. And she did just that, for 10 years all by herself. When she first decided to open a store she looked in her own closet and drawers and counted the number of items in each category, skirts, blouses, t-shirts, pants, jackets etc. She quickly realized the appropriate proportions and purchased her merchandise for her store based on her own personal assessment of her wardrobe. Three tops to every bottom and it was just right! Of course, that has changed since then and continues to change each season. She says recently people weren’t buying any bottoms at all for a few months in any of her stores. That had never happened before. Wendy Foster Wendy now has 4 stores. The first stores were and still are in the Upper Village in Montecito. Wendy Foster, Wendy Foster Upstairs and Angel. The square footage grew to about 10,000 square feet in Montecito and includes a “gourmetisserie”, house wares, tabletop, garden, children’s wear, books, men’s wear, bedding, wine, chocolates and gifts. Wendy Foster State Street, one of downtown Santa Barbara’s premier shopping destinations for over 20 years, offers discerning shoppers the opportunity to create entire coordinated outfits, often featuring lines designed locally or not available elsewhere, from an extensive inventory of clothing and accessories. Wendy travels to Paris to do much of her buying, bringing collections of the European culture back for local fashion lovers to cherish. She recently commented on her unique recipe for successful buying: “Because of my traveling and interests, I don’t just rely on going to the fashion trade shows. I don’t just sit back and pick things from what’s being presented to me. I’m proactive. I may see someone on the street and run after her to ask where she got her clothes. I’m always aware of what’s going on around me, what people look like and what’s coming next.” Each clothing store also has its own buyer therefore a different identity and individuality but with the Wendy Foster touch. All of the buyers worked with Wendy for some time before they became buyers. Wendy and her husband Pierre LaFond also own the LaFond Bistro Restaurant at 516 State Street in Santa Barbara and at 516 San Ysidro Road in Montecito, the Santa Barbara Winery at 202 Anacapa St. in Santa Barbara and LaFond Winery in Buellton. 17

waterfront guide THE SANTA BARBARA CITY WATERFRONT Where you can shop, dine & play all day!
T
here’s something for everyone at the Santa Barbara City Waterfront, the breathtaking span of palm-lined beaches along Cabrillo Boulevard that border the world-famous Stearns Wharf and California’s oldest – and most beautiful - working harbor. The Waterfront is blessed with three picturesque, golden sand beaches. East Beach, at 1440 Cabrillo Blvd., offers picnic facilities, more than a dozen volleyball courts on the beach, and a full service restaurant. The Cabrillo Pavilion Bathhouse, built in 1927, offers showers, lockers, a weight room, beach wheelchair and volleyball rental. West Beach between Stearns Wharf and the harbor offers a picturesque sandy area for sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, wind surfing and beach volleyball on eleven acres adjoined by the wide palm tree lined walkway and bike path. The family-friendly Leadbetter Beach between the harbor and Shoreline Park offers grassy picnic and barbecue sites and attracts windsurfers, catamaran pilots, surfers and walkers. We recommend that you begin your waterfront adventure with a visit to the Santa Barbara Region of Commerce Visitor, open daily at the corner of Cabrillo Blvd and Garden Streets, where you can make reservations at hotels and restaurants and get directions and information about the area’s attractions and visitor-serving businesses. The Waterfront offers a variety of ocean-going activities like coastal cruises, sailing, whale watching, fishing, kayaking, surfing and parasailing. And for those who prefer spend more time on land, the amphibious Land Shark operated by Land & Sea Tours departs from State Street at Stearns Wharf at 12PM, 2PM and 4PM daily for a 90-minute fun-filled, narrated tour of historical landmarks that includes a cruise around the harbor and waterfront. The Santa Barbara Zoo, just off Cabrillo Blvd at East Beach, is home to 160 species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects on its 30 hilltop acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On Sundays, up to 200 resident artists display their original works under the palms along Cabrillo Blvd at the Arts & Crafts Show that is the only continuous, non-juried arts festival of drawings, paintings, graphics, sculpture, crafts and photography in the world. The historic Stearns Wharf – the longest and oldest working wooden wharf in California- is the most popular visitor attraction in the Santa Barbara area. Built in 1872 by local lumberman J.P. Stearns to unload logging ships on what had just 22

the whAleS of SuMMer ... are in the Santa Barbara Channel!
T
he Santa Barbara Channel is known as one of the best whale watching areas in the world. Giant blue whales, playful humpback whales, plus fin and minke whales, dolphins and porpoises … all are in the nutrient rich waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Over 27 different types of whales and dolphins inhabit these waters throughout the year, making this channel one of the best whale watching areas in the world. The undisputed star of this show is
the giant blue whale. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing over 150 tons, the blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on earth … by a long shot. To put it in perspective, consider that the largest land animal, the African elephant, can attain a weight of about 7 1/2 tons … the tongue of the blue whale is larger than an African elephant. With a heart as big as a Volkswagen they are truly immense animals. Blue whales show up in the channel about mid-May and can be seen through about mid-September. For pure showmanship, however, nothing beats the friendly and active humpback whales. These magnificent creatures have been delighting people 32
from all over the world with their antics – breaching, lob tailing, slapping their pectoral fins on the water and just plain mugging boats full of eager whale watchers. They often come right to the boat and play to the people – enjoying a little people watching of their own. Humpback whales are in the channel year ‘round but are plentiful May through August. Both the Blues and Humpbacks can be seen on the Condor Express’s whale watching trips, which depart daily from Sea Landing in the Santa Barbara Harbor. At any time of year, dolphins and porpoises can be sighted on the channel crossing, and sometimes we even experience the exciting Orca, or killer whale! The premier charter boat in this area, the Condor Express is powered by four 740hp diesel engines driving water jets, making the crossing to the islands in less than an hour as opposed to 3-5 hours for other boats. They provide qualified naturalists on all voyages, a galley serving hot and cold meals, even a full cocktail bar – definitely the most comfortable way to get out to see the whales! The Condor Express runs half-day Island Whale watching trips daily, and on all trips whale sightings are guaranteed! Fares are: $105 adults, $55 children 5-12 years, children under 5 free. For reservations, call (805) 882-0088 or toll free 1-888-77WHALE.

The More the Merrier By Julia McHugh

W
hen born in February, the Santa Barbara Zoo’s baby golden lion tamarins were each the size of a C battery. Now cell phone-sized, the bright orange twins still spend much of their time clinging to their parents’ backs. These highly endangered Brazilian monkeys are among several new Zoo additions. Two slender-tailed meerkats were born in an underground den in April – the first births of their species in over a dozen years. The current “mob,” as meerkat groups are called, arrived in June 2010 from the San Diego Zoo. There are now five meerkats at the Zoo, the two parents, an unrelated female, and the two kits. “The more meerkats, the merrier,” says Sheri Horiszny, Director of Animal Programs, “it is natural for them to be in a large social group.” Both these births come as part of Association of Zoos and Aquariums cooperative breeding programs. However, the birth of Masai giraffe Daniel took the Zoo by surprise in January 2011. Unknown to anyone, his young mother, not even aged three, was pregnant when she arrived from the Los Angeles Zoo. Daniel was hand reared and is now ten feet tall. That’s still relatively small, especially compared to the 16-foot Michael, a male Masai who arrived from Canada in January 2012. There is one relatively new Zoo resident who will never grow up: Duncan, the T. Rex. This amazingly lifelike dinosaur, designed a top Hollywood creature shop, is forever an adolescent. He stars in the Zoo’s live stage show “How to Train Your Dinosaur,” which debuted last summer and is a hit with youngsters and oldsters alike (check www.sbzoo.org for show times)! The Santa Barbara Zoo is the region’s number one visitor attraction. Open daily 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. $14 for adults; $10 for children 2-12 years; seniors 65+; children under 2 free; $6 parking. BOATHOUSE RESTAURANT
P
Santa Barbara’s Finest On The Beach
erched atop the sand on secluded and beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach, better known as Hendry’s to locals, sits one of Santa Barbara’s newest and most exiting restaurants. The Boathouse at Hendry’s, Brought to us by the same family who started the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co and Santa Barbara FisHouse is truly a feast for all the senses. In the mornings, you can dine on the expansive patio and watch the sun rise over the coatal range to the east. In the evenings, gorgeous shades of red, orange and purple from the sunset to the west, flood the entire restaurant. The Boathouse at Hendry’s also offers an excellent escape without ever leaving town, one is struck with the sense they have been transported to a remote and tropical place, while just minutes from downtown. It is difficult to see any signs of development from any part of the Boathouse, with the ocean on one side, the Douglass Preserve on the other and Hope Ranch to the north. Dolphins in the surf just out front seem to be a daily occurance, and in season migrating whales are also common. The best part of the visit however is the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily and the menus feature some of the best executed familiar favorites I’ve seen, as well as many very tasty unique dishes. The signature breakfast is incredible; real Dungeness crab cakes over breakfast potatoes topped with poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise; amazing! Corn beef hash was never tops on my list, but tasting it at the Boathouse nearly qualified as a life changing experience. The serving bordered on gigantic, but in no time it was gone; the best I have ever tasted. Of course all the usual favorites are there, pancakes, waffles, French toast, eggs benedict, thick applewood smoked bacon and eggs etc. I recommend weekdays, or get there early on the weekend. Lunch is a very fun experience at the Boathouse, it’s busy, beautiful and again, delicious. Try the Mahi Salad with mandarins and crispy wontons, or the Shrimp Louie, or the Lobster Tacos. The cioppino is excellent, and the Seared Ahi Club on ciabatta is fantastic, although huge. Fresh fish specials abound and generally two to three oyster varieties can be had. Dinner dresses up nicely at the Boathouse, with the servers donning all black and a quiet elegance complimenting the natural beauty of the place. Stuffy would never be a word to describe the Boathouse, with beachgoers in flip flops as welcome as those in their designer apparel. The food at dinner is quite special. Appetizers such as Giant Mesquite Grilled Prawns on sourdough with scampi butter, Spiced Chicken Cigarillos, and Pan Fried Dungeness Crab Cakes start of a delicious meal, or make a meal in themselves. The mesquite grills beautifully cook many fish delicacies, such as Ahi Tuna, Yellowtail, Arctic Char, Mahi Mahi, White Sea Bass, as well as Newport Beef Ribteyes, Top Sirloins, and New York Steaks, as well as the truly sinful Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with blue cheese compound butter and fried Maui onions. End it with a molten chocolate cake or McConnell’s ice cream mudd pie and you are in heaven. 50 42

P
ierre Lafond has played a pioneering role in the history of Santa Barbara County’s wine industry since 1962 when he opened Santa Barbara Winery--the first post-prohibition commercial winery in the region. The visionary vintner has been producing top-quality wines ever since. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted in 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996, 30 additional acres were added. The wines under the Santa Barbara Winery label range from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to lesser known but memorable varietals such as Negrette and Lagrein. Sea breeze and sun complement time spent at the Santa Barbara Winery tasting room--located just two blocks from the Pacific Ocean in downtown Santa Barbara--a site that doubles as a production (all their wines are processed there) and storage facility. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The small-lot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. It has become renowned for its single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Vistors to Lafond Winery can enjoy the picnic area under the trees, where rustic tables overlook the vineyards, or relax on the newly installed patio that can accommodate small groups of up to 50 people. The spacious tasting room, with a view of the vineyard and working winery, invites lingering. Santa Barbara Winery and Lafond Winery are also available for private celebrations and events. Santa Barbara Winery, 202 Anacapa Street, call (805) 963-3633 for hours & information. 50

erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of American’s top 75 upscale golf courses. Sandpiper was included in the 2011 Top 40 Golf Courses in the State of California – Golf Digest
Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says General Manager & Director of Golf, D.J. Limardi. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 60

Solvang - A Little Taste of Denmark in Our Own Backyard!
O
ver 200 years ago, a group of Danish educators from the Midwest ventured west and developed a village that is, today, one of the principal tourist destinations in the country. Located inland, along the Central California Coast, 45 miles north of Santa Barbara, this village of 5,300 represents a page from a Hans Christian Andersen story. The authenticity of Solvang’s Danish architecture features simulated thatch & gleaming copper roofs, attractive dormers, stained glass windows and patches of cobblestone sidewalks. Dane’s believe a stork on your roof will bring good luck - evident by the array of artificial storks that grace the chimneys and rooflines of many of the homes and buildings. It is also a town of flags. Shops, businesses and homes proudly display the Stars & Stripes as well as the red & white Dannebrog, the world’s oldest flag. Solvang is home to two museums one of which is the Elverhoj Museum, housed in a replica of a Danish farmhouse and devoted to the cultural heritage of Solvang. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum, located downtown, features a large collection of the author’s books and displays on the life, art & love of Denmark’s most famous and 62
beloved author. Tours of the town are provided daily in the spring, summer and fall and weekends in the winter via Honen (“The Hen”), a replica of a Copenhagen street car of the early 1900’s and powered by a pair of massive Belgian horses. You won’t want to miss Danish Days in September – celebrated with traditions passed down from generations. Huge Danish & American flags line the flower-lined streets and residents proudly wear colorful native costumes. Join in the dancing singing lively entertainment and authentic delicious food. Among the myriad of Danish bakeries and smorgasbord cuisine, there are more than 150 one-of-a-kind boutiques featuring antiques & collectibles, crafted Danish imports, furnishings, gourmet gifts, toy stores, art galleries, clothing & shoe boutiques as well as wineries & wine-tasting rooms. Solvang means “Sunny Field” and indeed you will agree as this pedestrian friendly village boasts year round temperate weather, sunny skies & warm, friendly hospitality.
