n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today Â6
one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that
surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and worldclass restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries.
This is the home of six Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe, Eva Marie Saint and Steve Martin; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Milt Larsen, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors, Tommy Curren, Chuck Liddell; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll 7

The Best Places to Find the Perfect Gifts!
Holiday shopping in Santa Barbara is a rewarding experience and there’s no greater reward than discovering the eclectic mix of locally owned boutiques, galleries and shops that are some of the best places to find the perfect gifts in paradise on the pacific. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and there’s no better place to begin your holiday shopping adventure than the legendary Farmer Boy Restaurant, Santa 33 Jewels Barbara’s original diner at 3427 State Street, which is just the proverbial hop, skip and jump away from the Loreto Plaza at the corner of State and Los Positas streets, the home of the iconic Chaucer’s Bookstore, Santa Barbara’s much-loved bookseller since 1974 where you can browse a selection of over 150,000 titles in 300 sections; and, The Golf Klub, the locals favorite retail store that offers golf apparel, balls, bags, rangefinders, gloves, golf accessories and state-of-the-art computer club fitting. From Loreto Plaza, we recommend you travel south on State Street to Downtown Santa Barbara, where you’ll find the area’s highest concentration of retail shopping treasures in the eleven blocks from Sola Street south to Highway 101 with abundant public parking off Chapala and Anacapa streets and open-air trolleys, electric shuttle buses and pedi-cabs available to help you navigate the most beautiful downtown on the California coast. As you enter the downtown area, be sure to visit Natasha, the contemporary women’s clothing boutique in Victoria Court at 1231 State Street that specializes in easy care, easy wear casual clothing in natural fabrics made in California as well as the area’s largest selection of Citron and Cutloose apparel and a wide selection of accessories, shoes, bags, jewelry and hats. And since you’re just across the street from the box office at the beautifully restored Granada Theatre at 1214 State Street, may we suggest that tickets to the State Street Ballet’s December 16th or 17th performances of The Nutcracker, the holiday family favorite set to the unforgettable music of Tchaikovsky performed by the Opera San Luis Obispo Grand Orchestra or the Santa Barbara Symphony’s New Years Eve Pops Concert, the best New Year’s Eve celebration on the coast with Guest The Yes Store (Continued on page 18)

t was the Golden Age of moviemaking and Santa Barbara was the center of the celluloid universe. From its humble beginnings in 1910 as the location for early Western thrillers, Santa Barbara quickly became the moviemaking capital of the world and the location for over 1,200 major motion pictures that were produced from 1910 to 1921. In 1913, the American Film Company converted an ostrich farm on the corner of State and Islay Streets into a movie lot and began construction of the world’s largest movie studio on the property bordered by Mission, State, Padre and Chapala Streets which was commonly referred to as the “big glass studio” by the local population. For the next 8 years, up to 14 production companies simultaneously used the “Flying A” facilities to create many of the most popular films of the period and stars like Marion Davies, Lottie Pickford and Wallace Reid kept suites in the Edgerly Arms Apartment 24 62 62
Hotel on Sola Street which was built to accommodate the burgeoning motion picture industry during the years when famous directors like D.W. Griffith and William Desmond Taylor deposited $1500 weekly paychecks in local State Street banks and entertained the rich and famous from around the world. By 1921, motion picture audiences favored films with themes that focused on life in the big city and the “Flying A” studios were moved south to Hollywood to be closer to the urban backgrounds that became the most common setting for the next era of movie-making. Ironically, the same contractor who poured the concrete for the “big glass studio” in 1913 won the contract to demolish the facilities in 1948 leaving the office building at 2012 Chapala Street which was D.W. Griffith’s private garage and the buildings at the corner of Mission and Chapala Streets that housed the “Green Room” where thousands of actors rehearsed their lines and the private dressing rooms of the first superstars of the American screen. Some remain among the few architectural reminders of Santa Barbara’s place in the history of the motion picture industry. Today, Santa Barbara’s favorable yearround climate and lush, tropical terrain bordered by mountains and ocean attracts film-makers, television producers and fashion photographers to the hundreds of historic settings that blend the architecture of the city’s past and present into idyllic, eclectic locations.

Come ready to play throughout all three floors filled with 17,000 square feet of interactive experiences in science and creativity. On the first floor, there are the areas dedicated to Sound, Fantastic Forces, and Tech, including MOXI’s own dedicated makerspace called the Innovation Workshop. The second floor features Light, Speed and Interactive Media, including a small black box theater which houses a variety of rotating exhibitions and shows. The third floor is home to the rooftop Levinson Family Sky Garden and features exhibits that take advantage of the natural elements and stunning views of the mountains, harbor, and Stearns Wharf. MOXI is a place where fun comes first and learning happens in active, exciting, and unexpected ways. Create sound effects for popular movies, build and test a race car, or paint with light – you can do it all at MOXI. Keep an eye out for the museum’s floor staff, known as Sparks, who are there to ignite that learning by sparking your curiosity and creativity. They’re the ones in the blue shirts and will encourage you to experiment, observe, explore, discover, question, make and design. MOXI is now open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the website for any special hours and holiday closures. General admission is $14 for adults (age 13 and up), and $10 for children age 3-12. Children 2 and under are admitted for free. One ticket gets you access to all MOXI has to offer. Located at 125 State Street, www.moxi.org, 805-770-5000. 31

waterfront guide THE SANTA BARBARA CITY WATERFRONT Where you can shop, dine & play all day!
T
here’s something for everyone at the Santa Barbara City Waterfront, the breathtaking span of palm-lined beaches along Cabrillo Boulevard that border the world-famous Stearns Wharf and California’s oldest – and most beautiful working harbor. The Waterfront is blessed with three picturesque, golden sand beaches. east Beach, at 1440 Cabrillo Blvd., offers picnic facilities, more than a dozen volleyball courts on the beach, and a full service restaurant. The Cabrillo Pavilion Bathhouse, built in 1927, offers showers, lockers, a weight room, beach wheelchair and volleyball rental. West Beach between Stearns Wharf and the harbor offers a picturesque sandy area for sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, wind surfing and beach volleyball on eleven acres adjoined by the wide palm tree lined walkway and bike path. The family-friendly Leadbetter Beach between the harbor and Shoreline Park offers grassy picnic and barbecue sites and attracts windsurfers, catamaran pilots, surfers and walkers. We recommend that you begin your waterfront adventure with a visit to the Santa Barbara Region of Commerce Visitor, open daily at the corner of Cabrillo Blvd and Garden Streets, where you can make reservations at hotels and restaurants and get directions and information about the area’s attractions and visitor-serving businesses. The Waterfront offers a variety of ocean-going activities like coastal cruises, sailing, whale watching, fishing, kayaking, surfing and parasailing. And for those who prefer spend more time on land, the amphibious Land Shark operated by Land & Sea Tours departs from State Street at Stearns Wharf at 12PM, 2PM and 4PM daily for a 90-minute fun-filled, narrated tour of historical landmarks that includes a cruise around the harbor and waterfront. The Santa Barbara Zoo, just off Cabrillo Blvd at East Beach, is home to 160 species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects on its 30 hilltop acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On Sundays, up to 200 resident artists display their original works under the palms along Cabrillo Blvd at the Arts & Crafts Show that is the only continuous, non-juried arts festival of drawings, paintings, graphics, sculpture, crafts and photography in the world. The historic Stearns Wharf – the longest and oldest working wooden wharf in California- is the most popular visitor attraction in the Santa Barbara area. Built in 1872 26 52
