n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today 6

This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette

Adventures Await at Santa Barbara Zoo

T

he Santa Barbara Zoo not only offers up-close views of more than 500 animals, but also active fun for the whole family. Feed a giraffe, scale a climbing wall, pan for treasure, slide down a giant “ant hill,” go on-stage during a live show – there are plenty of options. Also known as one of the world’s most beautiful zoos, its 32-acres are filled with mature trees, blooming flowers, a cactus garden, and a grassy hillside just perfect for rolling down. Views of the Pacific, Channel Islands, mountains, and city are visible from this oceanside bluff, once the site of a grand estate. Then, there are the animals. Meet Jari, a feisty three-year-old whitehanded gibbon who recently arrived from another zoo. She joins Jasmine, the Zoo’s longtime resident gibbon, who will be her surrogate mother for the next few years. See them frolic, swing through trees, and climb ropes on their island home. Two island foxes were found orphaned on San Nicholas Island, right off the Santa Barbara coast. Unable to fend for themselves, Lewis and Clark now delight visitors as they romp among the trees or snuggle in their hammock. Bangori and Nzinga are two relatively young Western lowland gorillas who comprise the Zoo’s “bachelor troop.” Highly intelligent and curious, they often sit right by the viewing glass, giving guests a close-up view. Get even closer by visiting – and feeding – the Zoo’s Masai giraffes. Michael, the Zoo’s male, hails from Canada, and has sired six calves since he arrived in 2011. See young Chad and younger Parker, both male, along with Michael, and females Audrey and Betty Lou. Giraffe feeding is offered most days, weather permitting. A portion of the $7 cost goes to conservation programs. You don’t need kids in tow to enjoy the penguins, elephants, lions, and more at Santa Barbara Zoo. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visit www.sbzoo.org. 16

Solvang - A Little Taste of Denmark in Our Own Backyard!

O

ver 200 years ago, a group of Danish educators from the Midwest ventured west and developed a village that is, today, one of the principal tourist destinations in the country. Located inland, along the Central California Coast, 45 miles north of Santa Barbara, this village of 5,300 represents a page from a Hans Christian Andersen story. The authenticity of Solvang’s Danish architecture features simulated thatch & gleaming copper roofs, attractive dormers, stained glass windows and patches of cobblestone sidewalks. Dane’s believe a stork on your roof will bring good luck - evident by the array of artificial storks that grace the chimneys and rooflines of many of the homes and buildings. It is also a town of flags. Shops, businesses and homes proudly display the Stars & Stripes as well as the red & white Dannebrog, the world’s oldest flag. Solvang is home to two museums one of which is the Elverhoj Museum, housed in a replica of a Danish farmhouse and devoted to the cultural heritage of Solvang. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum, located downtown, features a large collection of the author’s books and displays on the life, art & love of Denmark’s most famous and beloved author. 62 62 2 0 62

Tours of the town are provided daily in the spring, summer and fall and weekends in the winter via Honen (“The Hen”), a replica of a Copenhagen street car of the early 1900’s and powered by a pair of massive Belgian horses. You won’t want to miss Danish Days in September – celebrated with traditions passed down from generations. Huge Danish & American flags line the flower-lined streets and residents proudly wear colorful native costumes. Join in the dancing singing lively entertainment and authentic delicious food. Among the myriad of Danish bakeries and smorgasbord cuisine, there are more than 150 one-of-a-kind boutiques featuring antiques & collectibles, crafted Danish imports, furnishings, gourmet gifts, toy stores, art galleries, clothing & shoe boutiques as well as wineries & wine-tasting rooms. Solvang means “Sunny Field” and indeed you will agree as this pedestrian friendly village boasts year round temperate weather, sunny skies & warm, friendly hospitality. Visit www.solvangusa.com for further information on what Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley have to offer.

Village Properties

S

Locally Owned - Globally Connected

anta Barbara real estate and Village Properties comes to mind. That’s because homegrown, locally owned Village Properties has built its reputation on teamwork, high ethical standards, and an unwavering commitment to and appreciation for the place it calls home. And, you can’t get much more Santa Barbara than that. Village Properties was founded by Ed Edick and Renee Grubb in 1996 with the philosophy that real estate is a full-time career, requiring full-time commitment. Not only are the Village Properties sales agents extremely knowledgeable on the complexities of real estate law in addition to the ins and outs of financing, they are very well versed in local codes and regulations as well as Santa Barbara real estate analysis and pricing. “One reason for Village Properties’ success is our extensive experience in Santa Barbara County real estate and our worldwide connections,” said Grubb, who started her real estate career in 1983. “Another reason is that we, our agents and staff, are a productive, collaborative village of experienced professionals.” Deepening their commitment to the community where they work and live, Grubb and Edick established the Teacher’s Fund, a nonprofit to assist local teachers with the purchase of supplies, materials, and equipment needed for classrooms, in 2002. To date, more than $1.3 million has been donated to Santa Barbara County preschool, elementary, middle, and high school teachers in both public and private schools. Seven years ago, the two real estate professionals added a Teacher’s Fund Golf Tournament and Cocktail Party to help fund the nonprofit. Today, Grubb’s and Edick’s Village has grown to serve the many areas of Santa Barbara County, including offices in Montecito, Santa Barbara, and Santa Ynez with agents and brokers serving Ojai, Carpinteria, Summerland, Montecito, Santa Barbara, Goleta, Solvang, Buellton, Los Olivos, and Santa Ynez. With over 150 agents and brokers, Village Properties is Santa Barbara County’s largest independent real estate brokerage. “It’s interesting, I’ve spent one third of my life at Village Properties and yet it seems like we started yesterday. Being a local myself, we are thankful for the local support from our community for the last 21 years. We are excited to discover what the future holds,” related Edick. To learn more about Village Properties, call (805) 969-8900 or visit www.villagesite.com. Farmer Boy Restaurant A Shiny New Look

F

irst of all, if you’re craving breakfast and you’re in the U.S.A., how can you not be enticed by a place called Farmer Boy? You picture that boy (clad in overalls, whistling that catchy Mayberry tune) coming in with eggs straight from the henhouse, bacon direct from the smokehouse, etc. The beloved San Roque café was purchased by the Bennett family (also owners of Brophy Brothers, Benchmark Eatery and On The Alley) in 2014 and closed for a lengthy overhaul. Longtime fans return now say they are pleased by the shiny new, modern feel. I ventured in on a recent Saturday morning and the place was packed, full of chatter and laughter. Nice vibe. Found a seat next to a guy with white hair and a white beard. Soon a server appeared with a cheery “Look what I have for you!” Almost like Christmas. And, feast like, his breakfast included two eggs over easy, bacon, English muffin and the biggest cinnamon bun I’ve ever seen, slathered in icing. Did I mention that he was fairly slender? Must be a distance runner, I muttered to myself. My more modest breakfast arrived in short order and it was top notch. Eggs, two rashers of bacon, hash browns (great), English muffin, and cup of Joe, (decaf.) Other plates I saw being delivered to the counter included fried chicken and waffles, steak and eggs, pancakes (which, by the way, are only $7 for a full stack) and a variety of great looking omelettes. Another popular item, according to some others seated at the counter, are the crab cakes which feature two poached eggs on an English muffin with a citrus hollandaise. Might have to try that next time. Eventually, my neighbor finished (defeated by that massive cinnamon bun; he left a quarter of it) and I asked for his review. Basically; All around pretty good, and that he’d be coming back. I returned for lunch a couple of days later with my cousins, longtime Farmer Boy fans who were greeted fondly by a waitress from the old days. There’s your hometown touch. He had fish and chips, she had a BLT. Smilles all around. – By Jeff Miller Serving breakfast and lunch. 3427 State St, 805-845-6749 www.farmerboy.com 32

P

Santa Barbara’s Finest On The Beach

erched atop the sand on secluded and beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach, better known as Hendry’s to locals, sits one of Santa Barbara’s most exciting restaurants. The Boathouse at Hendry’s, brought to us by the same family who started the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co and Santa Barbara FisHouse is truly a feast for all the senses. In the mornings, you can dine on the expansive patio and watch the sun rise over the coastal range to the east. In the evenings, gorgeous shades of red, orange and purple from the sunset to the west flood the entire restaurant. The Boathouse at Hendry’s also offers an excellent escape without ever leaving town. One is struck with the sense they have been transported to a remote and tropical place, while just minutes from downtown. It is difficult to see any signs of development from any part of the Boathouse, with the ocean on one side, the Douglass Preserve on the other and Hope Ranch to the north. Dolphins in the surf just out front seem to be a daily occurrence, and, in season migrating whales are also common. The best part of the visit however is the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily and the menus feature some of the best executed familiar favorites I’ve seen, as well as many very tasty unique dishes. The signature breakfast is incredible; real Dungeness crab cakes over breakfast potatoes topped with poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise; amazing! Corn beef hash was never tops on my list, but tasting it at the Boathouse nearly qualified as a life changing experience. The serving bordered on gigantic, but in no time it was gone; the best I have ever tasted. Of course all the usual favorites are there, pancakes, French toast, eggs benedict, thick applewood smoked bacon and eggs etc. I recommend weekdays, or get there early on the weekend. Lunch is a very fun experience at the Boathouse, it’s busy, beautiful and again, delicious. Try the Grilled Mahi Mahi Salad with pickled ginger and crispy wontons, or the Boathouse Louie, or the Lobster Tacos. The cioppino is excellent, and the Lobster & Truffle Mac & Cheese is fantastic, although huge. Fresh fish specials abound and generally two to three oyster varieties can be had. The food at dinner is quite special. Appetizers such as Crispy Pork Belly & Sea Scallops, Steamed Black Mussels and Pan Roasted Crab Cakes are the start of a delicious meal, or make a meal in themselves. The mesquite grills beautifully cook many fish delicacies, such as Ahi Tuna, Pacific Sea Bass, Mahi Mahi, White Sea Bass, as well as New York Steaks and the truly sinful Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with red wine-shallot butter and scallion mashed potatoes. End it with Banana’s Foster or McConnell’s ice cream mudd pie and you are in heaven. Call (805) 898-2628 for reservations.

THE SANTA BARBARA FISHOUSE

S

– Serving the Finest Seafood Anywhere –

tarted in 1999 by local fisherman and son Tom and Adam White, The Santa Barbara FisHouse located on Santa Barbara’s beautiful waterfront just steps from historic Stearns Wharf, has established itself in 15 years of operations as the premier place to go for seafood in Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara Area Golf Courses Have Something For Everyone

W

hen it comes to golf, Santa Barbara has something to offer for everyone! The County of Santa Barbara is quickly becoming known as a premier golf destination. With a wonderful portfolio of courses, there is nothing the golfing world can’t find. From a championship golf course ranked among the best in the world to a golf course that is perfect for the beginner. With green fees ranging from $12 to $149 golfers have financial options as well. If golfers desire nine-holes, 18-holes, tournament play, banquet facilities, name brand merchandise, PGA golf instruction, junior clinics, practice facilities, club fitting or a gourmet meal after their round, they can find it here in this diverse golf destination. Sandpiper golf course opened in 1972 and has been known as “one of the best” ever since. It earned this reputation by providing golfers with championship golf on the ocean’s edge. Patrons can literally step off the green of the Par 3, 11th Hole and on to the sand of the scenic Santa Barbara coastline. This stunning combination of championship golf and beauty has inspired awe in its patrons for 35 years. Glen Annie Golf Club, Santa Barbara’s newest golf gem, opened its doors in December of 1997 cementing the area’s reputation as a premier golf destination. This challenging layout is perched in the foothills above Santa Barbara with breathtaking ocean and mountain views. A beautiful clubhouse with its award winning architecture 60 60 68

Glen Annie Golf Course

provides its guests with acclaimed cuisine and looks out onto this magnificent landscape & a cascading lake. Just a half hour up the highway the River Course at the Alisal presents golfers with breathtaking panoramas of the brilliant hues of the foothills and the Santa Ynez Mountains and Valley. This challenging layout follows the meandering path of the Santa Ynez River and features four lakes and a green that is nearly surrounded by water. After a rewarding round of golf, guests can retire to the popular River Grille to enjoy a drink or a wonderful meal. A twenty five minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara will bring you to Rancho San Marcos and golfers can reach La Purisima in less than an hour. Both are critically acclaimed golf courses that feature championship golf with spectacular surroundings and are well worth the trip. With a wide variety of golf courses that will challenge the best golfers, help the beginners, and inspire the view takers, Santa Barbara is a destination that is nothing short of a golfer’s dream!

Rita Hills Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are poured at the Lafond Winery City Tasting Room at 111 East Yanonali Street next to the Santa Barbara Winery Tasting Room just two blocks from the beach in Santa Barbara’s popular Funk Zone, one of the area’s most prominent wine destinations; and, at the Lafond Winery & Vineyards tasting room in Buellton. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted in 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996, 30 additional acres were added. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The small-lot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. The luminous Lafond Winery City Tasting Room that was designed by Mr. Lafond stocks a variety of local artisan products from fine art paintings to jewelry, gift cards and gift baskets. The spacious tasting room at the Lafond Winery & Vineyards in Buellton offers a view of the vineyard and working winery and invites visitors to enjoy the picnic area under the trees seated at rustic tables that overlook the vineyards, or to relax on the patio that can accommodate small groups of up to 50 people.
