Side by side, they painted the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens – one of history’s greatest works of architecture. So were united Lockwood de Forest’s three abiding loves: travel, painting, and architecture. In a recreated 19th century Orientalist salon, the flower of those loves will bloom again...

Giraffe Calves, Dino Doc & Hidden Treasures

tall “baby” and tall tales are among the new attractions at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Known as one of the world’s most beautiful zoos, it’s also the only one where giraffes have ocean views. A 6-foot 6-inch-tall, 191-pound bundle of Masai giraffe joy arrived in late March 2016. Male calf Chad brings the herd’s number to five, but it’ll soon be six – another calf is expected this Summer. Giraffe feeding is offered most days, weather permitting. A portion of the $7 cost goes to giraffe conservation. An 8-foot-tall grizzly bear named Tiny stars in the live stage show “California Tales.” He and his other puppet friends are back with a new “tall tale” based on a Native American myth in which Raven and Turtle use butterflies and a salt lick to get hilarious revenge on trickster Coyote. Natural behaviors by coyotes are explained by the trickster himself. “Dino Doc” is a live show featuring the Zoo’s three high-tech dinosaurs – with help from volunteer “doctors” who give them check-ups, just like the real Zoo veterinarian. A “meet and greet” with the dinosaurs and cast immediately follows the show. Both shows are free with Zoo admission. Check Admissions for show times. There’s gems in “them thar hills” – well, more accurately, near the Zoo hilltop. A wooden water tower marks the spot of Tiny’s Mining Camp, adjacent to the Barnyard. Here guests to pan for fossils, shark teeth, and gems. Purchase a bag of “ore,” then sift, shake, and pan for hidden treasures in the 12-foot long sluice box complete with running with water, like ones used during the Gold Rush. It’s open daily and each miner is guaranteed a keepsake. You don’t need kids in tow to enjoy the penguins, elephants, lions, and more at the charming, seaside Santa Barbara Zoo, the region’s most popular attraction. illage Properties Celebrates 20th Anniversary SAY “SANTA BARBARA REAL ESTATE” and Village Properties comes to mind. That’s because homegrown, locally owned Village Properties has built its reputation on teamwork, high ethical standards, and an unwavering commitment to and appreciation for the place it calls home. And, you can’t get much more Santa Barbara than that. Celebrating its 20th Anniversary, Village Properties was founded by Ed Edick and Renee Grubb in 1996 with the philosophy that real estate is a full-time career, requiring fulltime commitment. Not only are the Village Properties sales agents extremely knowledgeable on the complexities of real estate law in addition to the ins and outs of financing, they are very well versed in local codes and regulations as well as Santa Barbara real estate analysis and pricing. “One reason for Village Properties’ success is our extensive experience in Santa Barbara County real estate and our worldwide connections,” said Grubb, who started her real estate career in 1983. “Another reason is that we, our agents and staff, are a productive, collaborative village of experienced professionals.” Deepening their commitment to the community where they work and live, Grubb and Edick established the Teacher’s Fund, a nonprofit to assist local teachers with the purchase of supplies, materials, and equipment needed for classrooms, in 2002. To date, more than $1.3 million has been donated to Santa Barbara County preschool, elementary, middle, and high school teachers in both public and private schools. Six years ago, the two real estate professionals added a Teacher’s Fund Golf Tournament and Cocktail Party to help fund the nonprofit. Today, Grubb’s and Edick’s Village has grown to serve the many areas of Santa Barbara County, including offices in Montecito, Santa Barbara, and Santa Ynez with agents and brokers serving Ojai, Carpinteria, Summerland, Montecito, Santa Barbara, Goleta, Solvang, Buellton, Los Olivos, and Santa Ynez. With over 150 agents and brokers, Village Properties is Santa Barbara County’s largest independent real estate brokerage. “It’s interesting, I’ve spent one third of my life at Village Properties and yet it seems like we started yesterday. Being a local myself, we are thankful for the local support from our community for the last 20 years. We are excited to discover what the future holds,” related Edick. he beautiful exterior of Casa Blanca Restaurant and Cantina is just the beginning for diners entering Santa Barbara’s hottest new Mexican Restaurant-rivaled only by the wondrous interior created by local renowned architect Jeff Shelton that includes such features as a solid black Acacia hand carved bar, hand blown glass bulbs hanging from the ceiling and 5,000 square feet of custom designed cement tile. While soaking in the magnificent surroundings either on the warmly lit fire warmed patio or spectacular dining room, one discovers that this is not just a pretty package - the best reason to visit is Chef Daniel Ibarra’s delicious and creative cuisine being created in the spacious display kitchen. Mexican classics like chile rellenos, tamales and fajitas, as well as specialties like the Nopales Cactus slow roasted chipotle pork and Aztec Carne asada. If Tequila is your thing, Casa Blanca is heaven on earth for you. Nearly 200 varieties stock the bar (don’t try them all in one night) 34 48 50

and try them in an ingenious cocktail list that includes fresh prickly pear, cucumber or blood orange margaritas, fresh grapefruit palomas and white wine and fresh fruit sangria. Boathouse RestauRant

P

Santa Barbara’s Finest On The Beach

erched atop the sand on secluded and beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach, better known as Hendry’s to locals, sits one of Santa Barbara’s most exciting restaurants. The Boathouse at Hendry’s, brought to us by the same family who started the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co and Santa Barbara FisHouse is truly a feast for all the senses. In the mornings, you can dine on the expansive patio and watch the sun rise over the coastal range to the east. In the evenings, gorgeous shades of red, orange and purple from the sunset to the west flood the entire restaurant. The Boathouse at Hendry’s also offers an excellent escape without ever leaving town. One is struck with the sense they have been transported to a remote and tropical place, while just minutes from downtown. It is difficult to see any signs of development from any part of the Boathouse, with the ocean on one side, the Douglass Preserve on the other and Hope Ranch to the north. Dolphins in the surf just out front seem to be a daily occurrence, and, in season migrating whales are also common. The best part of the visit however is the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily and the menus feature some of the best executed familiar favorites I’ve seen, as well as many very tasty unique dishes. The signature breakfast is incredible; real Dungeness crab cakes over breakfast potatoes topped with poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise; amazing! Corn beef hash was never tops on my list, but tasting it at the Boathouse nearly qualified as a life changing experience. The serving bordered on gigantic, but in no time it was gone; the best I have ever tasted. Of course all the usual favorites are there, pancakes, French toast, eggs benedict, thick applewood smoked bacon and eggs etc. I recommend weekdays, or get there early on the weekend. Lunch is a very fun experience at the Boathouse, it’s busy, beautiful and again, delicious. Try the Grilled Mahi Mahi Salad with pickled ginger and crispy wontons, or the Boathouse Louie, or the Lobster Tacos. The cioppino is excellent, and the Lobster & Truffle Mac & Cheese is fantastic, although huge. Fresh fish specials abound and generally two to three oyster varieties can be had. The food at dinner is quite special. Appetizers such as Crispy Pork Belly & Sea Scallops, Steamed Black Mussels and Pan Roasted Crab Cakes are the start of a delicious meal, or make a meal in themselves. The mesquite grills beautifully cook many fish delicacies, such as Ahi Tuna, Pacific Sea Bass, Mahi Mahi, White Sea Bass, as well as New York Steaks and the truly sinful Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with red wine-shallot butter and scallion mashed potatoes. End it with Banana’s Foster or McConnell’s ice cream mudd pie and you are in heaven. Call (805) 898-2628 for reservations.

Welcome to rancho San marcoS Where The Golf Gods Play

C

onveniently located off highway 154, just 15 minutes west of the Santa Barbara beaches, and 15 minutes east of the wine country community of Santa Ynez and Danish village town of Solvang, Rancho San Marcos Golf Course delivers a new level of golf course quality and customer service.

“At Rancho San Marcos Golf Course, golf isn’t just a game. It’s an experience.” - Golf Today An instant classic since its inception in 1998, this Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course located on 300 spectacular acres is both a treasure to behold and a strategic challenge that exudes the understated elegance and exclusivity that only private clubs extol. Rancho San Marcos offers magnificent vistas surrounded only by nature’s beauty adorned by centuries-old oak trees and stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley, distant furrowed peaks, and eagles soaring above Lake Cachuma – without a trace of urban development in sight. This world class course, tucked deep into the valley floor of the Santa Ynez Mountains has kept the 60 660 0

essence of the old ranch which was located here since the Spanish land grant of 1804. The simple and pastoral setting combined with the classic game of golf, makes Rancho San Marcos the ideal location to forget the troubles of the world and reminisce on a quieter, simpler time. At 6,939 yards and a par 71, Rancho San Marcos provides golfers of all skill levels such an enjoyable and rewarding golf experience that Golf Magazine named this Ty Warner property one of the “Top 10 Golf Courses You Can Play”, and, Golf Digest awarded it 4 ½ stars among the top 201 golf courses in the United States. Rancho San Marcos and its stunning scenery have also been featured in national advertising campaigns for both print and television. Archeological evidence discovered at Rancho San Marcos indicates that Prehistoric hunters and gathers occupied this region for more then 9,000 years. Descendants of the Chumash Indian tribe, one of North America’s most complex hunting and gathering societies, were active participants in Rancho San Marcos archaeological investigations. For more information about this spectacular golf experience, call (805) 683.6334 or visit www.rsm1804.com.

Solvang - A Little Taste of Denmark in Our Own Backyard!

O

ver 200 years ago, a group of Danish educators from the Midwest ventured west and developed a village that is, today, one of the principal tourist destinations in the country. Located inland, along the Central California Coast, 45 miles north of Santa Barbara, this village of 5,300 represents a page from a Hans Christian Andersen story. The authenticity of Solvang’s Danish architecture features simulated thatch & gleaming copper roofs, attractive dormers, stained glass windows and patches of cobblestone sidewalks. Dane’s believe a stork on your roof will bring good luck - evident by the array of artificial storks that grace the chimneys and rooflines of many of the homes and buildings. It is also a town of flags. Shops, businesses and homes proudly display the Stars & Stripes as well as the red & white Dannebrog, the world’s oldest flag. Solvang is home to two museums one of which is the Elverhoj Museum, housed in a replica of a Danish farmhouse and devoted to the cultural heritage of Solvang. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum, located downtown, features a large collection of the author’s books and displays on the life, art & love of Denmark’s most famous and beloved author. 62 62 6 2

Tours of the town are provided daily in the spring, summer and fall and weekends in the winter via Honen (“The Hen”), a replica of a Copenhagen street car of the early 1900’s and powered by a pair of massive Belgian horses. You won’t want to miss Danish Days in September – celebrated with traditions passed down from generations. Huge Danish & American flags line the flower-lined streets and residents proudly wear colorful native costumes. Join in the dancing singing lively entertainment and authentic delicious food. Among the myriad of Danish bakeries and smorgasbord cuisine, there are more than 150 one-of-a-kind boutiques featuring antiques & collectibles, crafted Danish imports, furnishings, gourmet gifts, toy stores, art galleries, clothing & shoe boutiques as well as wineries & wine-tasting rooms. Solvang means “Sunny Field” and indeed you will agree as this pedestrian friendly village boasts year round temperate weather, sunny skies & warm, friendly hospitality. Visit www.solvangusa.com for further information on what Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley have to offer.
