n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today 6

one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that

surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and worldclass restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries.

This is the home of six Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe, Eva Marie Saint and Steve Martin; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Milt Larsen, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors, Tommy Curren, Chuck Liddell; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll 7

Celebrating 20 years of Service

illage Properties Celebrates 20th Anniversary SAY “SANTA BARBARA REAL ESTATE” and Village Properties comes to mind. That’s because homegrown, locally owned Village Properties has built its reputation on teamwork, high ethical standards, and an unwavering commitment to and appreciation for the place it calls home. And, you can’t get much more Santa Barbara than that. Celebrating its 20th Anniversary, Village Properties was founded by Ed Edick and Renee Grubb in 1996 with the philosophy that real estate is a full-time career, requiring fulltime commitment. Not only are the Village Properties sales agents extremely knowledgeable on the complexities of real estate law in addition to the ins and outs of financing, they are very well versed in local codes and regulations as well as Santa Barbara real estate analysis and pricing. “One reason for Village Properties’ success is our extensive experience in Santa Barbara County real estate and our worldwide connections,” said Grubb,v who started her real estate career in 1983. “Another reason is that we, our agents and staff, are a productive, collaborative village of experienced professionals.” Deepening their commitment to the community where they work and live, Grubb and Edick established the Teacher’s Fund, a nonprofit to assist local teachers with the purchase of supplies, materials, and equipment needed for classrooms, in 2002. To date, more than $1.3 million has been donated to Santa Barbara County preschool, elementary, middle, and high school teachers in both public and private schools. Six years ago, the two real estate professionals added a Teacher’s Fund Golf Tournament and Cocktail Party to help fund the nonprofit. Today, Grubb’s and Edick’s Village has grown to serve the many areas of Santa Barbara County, including offices in Montecito, Santa Barbara, and Santa Ynez with agents and brokers serving Ojai, Carpinteria, Summerland, Montecito, Santa Barbara, Goleta, Solvang, Buellton, Los Olivos, and Santa Ynez. With over 150 agents and brokers, Village Properties is Santa Barbara County’s largest independent real estate brokerage. “It’s interesting, I’ve spent one third of my life at Village Properties and yet it seems like we started yesterday. Being a local myself, we are thankful for the local support from our community for the last 20 years. We are excited to discover what the future holds,” related Edick. To learn more about Village Properties, call (805) 969-8900 or visit www.villagesite.com. Giraffe Calves, Dino Doc & Hidden Treasures

tall “baby” and tall tales are among the new attractions at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Known as one of the world’s most beautiful zoos, it’s also the only one where giraffes have ocean views. A 6-foot 6-inch-tall, 191-pound bundle of Masai giraffe joy arrived in late March 2016. Male calf Chad brings the herd’s number to five, but it’ll soon be six – another calf is expected in July. Giraffe feeding is offered most days, weather permitting. A portion of the $7 cost goes to giraffe conservation. An 8-foot-tall grizzly bear named Tiny stars in the live stage show “California Tales.” He and his other puppet friends are back with a new “tall tale” based on a Native American myth in which Raven and Turtle use butterflies and a salt lick to get hilarious revenge on trickster Coyote. Natural behaviors by coyotes are explained by the trickster himself. “Dino Doc” is a live show featuring the Zoo’s three high-tech dinosaurs – with help from volunteer “doctors” who give them check-ups, just like the real Zoo veterinarian. A “meet and greet” with the dinosaurs and cast immediately follows the show. Both shows are free with Zoo admission. Check Admissions for show times. There’s gems in “them thar hills” – well, more accurately, near the Zoo hilltop. A wooden water tower marks the spot of Tiny’s Mining Camp, adjacent to the Barnyard. Here guests to pan for fossils, shark teeth, and gems. Purchase a bag of “ore,” then sift, shake, and pan for hidden treasures in the 12-foot long sluice box complete with running with water, like ones used during the Gold Rush. It’s open daily and each miner is guaranteed a keepsake. You don’t need kids in tow to enjoy the penguins, elephants, lions, and more at the charming, seaside Santa Barbara Zoo, the region’s most popular attraction. Chumash Casino Resort Rising to a New Level

A

fter more than two years of planning, constructing and molding its ambitious vision for an expanded facility and heightened guest experience, Chumash Casino Resort is ready to show the world that it has risen to a new level. Visitors who have made the trip to Santa Barbara’s beautiful wine country and experienced Chumash Casino Resort in the past will be blown away by the facility’s transformation into a world-class resort. The property is now complete with a 12-story hotel tower, an exquisite rooftop pool, a spacious-yet-tranquil spa, multiple food outlets and an expanded casino floor that allows guests to indulge in one of the top entertainment experiences in the gaming industry. In May 2016, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians revealed its expanded resort to VIPs and dignitaries, showcasing all of the new elements that take Chumash Casino Resort to another level. The main attraction remains the gaming floor, which expanded by 27,000 square feet. It features 2,300 of the hottest slot machines, dozens of table games, bingo, a new poker room and the same weekly luxury car drawings that guests have enjoyed since the property opened in 2003. The AAA Four Diamond-rated Chumash Casino Resort Hotel has also grown by adding a 135-foot tower, which increases occupancy from 106 rooms and 15 suites to 320 rooms and 55 suites. The tower’s 12-floor suites give guests exquisite views of the Santa Ynez Valley, and some will have a bird’s-eye view of the new resort’s gem – the rooftop pool. With a pool deck that spans nearly 15,000 square feet, the rooftop pool is equipped with lounge chairs, cabanas, fire pits, dining options and an outdoor pool ambiance that is unmatched in Santa Barbara County. Visitors who seek restorative indulgence will be pleased to learn that the hotel’s spa has doubled in size to feature nine treatment rooms, two esthetic rooms, wet and dry saunas, female and co-ed lounges, and outdoor mineral pools. Chumash Casino Resort’s $165 million casino-hotel expansion project placed significant emphasis on increasing the number of dining options on the property and refining its popular offerings – the AAA Four Diamond-rated Willows restaurant, the Buffet and Chumash CafĂŠ. Willows and the Buffet were remodeled and opened to rave reviews in late 2015. The new and expanded Chumash CafĂŠ opened in May along with an all-new food court, which offers four separate outlets and designated seating. The resort’s new retail bridge, which links guests from the self-parking garage to the gaming floor, also has food options. One favorite will be The Sweet Stop, which proudly serves Starbucks coffee. The new Chumash Casino Resort will celebrate its unveiling throughout the summer by showcasing world-class talent in its remodeled Samala Showroom. Get ready for Rascal Flatts (July 14), Jerry Seinfeld (July 21) and Stevie Wonder (July 24). Chumash Casino Resort offers the ultimate escape, yet it’s only a short drive away. What are you waiting for? 22

Santa Barbara Museum of Art Celebrates 75th Anniversary

T

he idea for a Santa Barbara city museum originally came from the local artist Colin Campbell Cooper. When he learned that the main post office building, erected in 1912 and abandoned for several years, was going to be sold, he proposed, in a letter published in the Santa Barbara News-Press in July of 1937, that the impressive Italianate structure should be transformed into a museum. What Cooper himself described as something of a “pipedream” came to fruition just four years later, thanks to a groundswell of support from the community and the commitment of a small, passionate army of artists and civic-minded individuals. Only after the opening date was set did Buell Hammett, the first President of the Board of Trustees, contact an astrologer to determine at exactly what time of the day the doors should open; he learned that the stars and planets would be best aligned at precisely 11:43 am on June 5, 1941. At that very moment, 1,500 junior high students led visitors into the Museum, a stream of people that did not abate for months—approximately 300 a day and more than 50,000 visitors in the first six months. Upon entering, visitors were greeted, as they have more recently, by beautiful objects from Wright Ludington’s important collection of Greek and Roman antiquities as well as a substantial number of 19th- and 20th-century drawings and watercolors. From its inception, SBMA’s permanent collection has benefited from the generosity of many individual philanthropists, who have given the Museum some of its most famous works of art. Since its opening, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art has amassed nearly 28,000 works of art in its permanent collection, including paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, photographs, ceramics, glass, jades, bronzes, lacquer and textiles. These works represent the arts of Asia, Europe, and the Americas spanning over 5,000 years of human history. For the past 75 years, SBMA has played a vital role in the cultural and community life of Santa Barbara. The Museum’s founders were visionary individuals, and the current renovation project and resulting $50 million Imagine More capital campaign seeks to continue to extend the reach of the institution to, at once, make essential renovations and upgrades to an aging facility, while expanding the scope of SBMA’s exhibitions, programs, and place as a public forum for the arts in Santa Barbara and beyond. 26

T

here’s something for everyone at the Santa Barbara City Waterfront, the breathtaking span of palm-lined beaches along Cabrillo Boulevard that border the world-famous Stearns Wharf and California’s oldest – and most beautiful working harbor. The Waterfront is blessed with three picturesque, golden sand beaches. East Beach, at 1440 Cabrillo Blvd., offers picnic facilities, more than a dozen volleyball courts on the beach, and a full service restaurant. The Cabrillo Pavilion Bathhouse, built in 1927, offers showers, lockers, a weight room, beach wheelchair and volleyball rental. West Beach between Stearns Wharf and the harbor offers a picturesque sandy area for sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, wind surfing and beach volleyball on eleven acres adjoined by the wide palm tree lined walkway and bike path. The family-friendly Leadbetter Beach between the harbor and Shoreline Park offers grassy picnic and barbecue sites and attracts windsurfers, catamaran pilots, surfers and walkers. We recommend that you begin your waterfront adventure with a visit to the Santa Barbara Region of Commerce Visitor, open daily at the corner of Cabrillo Blvd and Garden Streets, where you can make reservations at hotels and restaurants and get directions and information about the area’s attractions and visitor-serving businesses. The Waterfront offers a variety of ocean-going activities like coastal cruises, sailing, whale watching, fishing, kayaking, surfing and parasailing. And for those who prefer spend more time on land, the amphibious Land Shark operated by Land & Sea Tours departs from State Street at Stearns Wharf at 12PM, 2PM and 4PM daily for a 90-minute fun-filled, narrated tour of historical landmarks that includes a cruise around the harbor and waterfront. The Santa Barbara Zoo, just off Cabrillo Blvd at East Beach, is home to 160 species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects on its 30 hilltop acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On Sundays, up to 200 resident artists display their original works under the palms along Cabrillo Blvd at the Arts & Crafts Show that is the only continuous, non-juried arts festival of drawings, paintings, graphics, sculpture, crafts and photography in the world. The historic Stearns Wharf – the longest and oldest working wooden wharf in California- is the most popular visitor attraction in the Santa Barbara area. Built in 1872 (Continued on page 32)

The Whales Of Summer ... are in the Santa Barbara Channel!

T

he Santa Barbara Channel is known as one of the best whale watching areas in the world. Giant blue whales, playful humpback whales, plus fin and minke whales, dolphins and porpoises … all are in the nutrient rich waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Over 27 different types of whales and dolphins inhabit these waters throughout the year, making this channel one of the best whale watching areas in the world.

The undisputed star of this show is the giant blue whale. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing over 150 tons, the blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on earth … by a long shot. To put it in perspective, consider that the largest land animal, the African elephant, can attain a weight of about 7 1/2 tons … the tongue of the blue whale is larger than an African elephant. With a heart as big as a Volkswagen they are truly immense animals. Blue whales show up in the channel about mid-May and can be seen through about mid-September. A

local favorite for 31 years, opal restaurant & bar thrives on the creative contrast between exciting innovation and comfortable tradition. As son as you step inside, you know you are in for a special experience. Sophisticated yet comfortable, opal restaurant & bar radiates a warm, friendly ambience combining the elegance of a trendy San Francisco bistro with a genuine hospitality that seems to come naturally to their well-trained staff of servers and chefs. From your first glance at the menu, it’s easy to see why opal is such a favorite, featuring eclectic California cuisine inspired by dishes from around the world and the multicultural heritage of America. Offering everything from an Herb Grilled 14 oz Ribeye Steak, to spicy authentic Paella, fresh seafood, homemade pastas & soups, deliciously imaginative salads, elegant Asian-accented appetizers, and homemade desserts, opal’s menu truly has something for every taste. If you are a wine lover, you are in for a treat at opal restaurant & bar. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence every year since 1993, their extensive wine list features a hand-selected mix of French, Italian, Australian, Spanish and California wines, with new wines added weekly. With its full bar and unique Martini specialties, opal is also a great place to drop in for a drink and an appetizer before a movie or a night on the town. If you need a private space for your group, opal has a separate, attractively decorated, banquet room that adjoins the main dining room, with its own sound system, kitchen and separate entrance. The philosophy of proprietors Tina Takaya and Richard Yates is simple, “People are hungry for more than just great food. We seek to create an experience that removes barriers and creates a connection between people; one that ultimately nurtures the soul as well.” With its warm and welcoming style, delicious and diverse menu, excellent wine list and full bar, all at reasonable prices, this is the kind of restaurant you can go back to again and again. And when you do, don’t be surprised if you recognize the folks at the table next to you. Sandpiper golf CluB Extraordinary Golf Experiences & Ocean Views!

P

erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of the top 25 public golf courses in the country. Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says Director of Golf, Kyle Oliver. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 660 0

Santa Barbara Winery World Class Varietal Wines

P

ierre Lafond has played a pioneering role in the history of Santa Barbara County’s wine industry since 1962 when he opened Santa Barbara Winery-the first post-prohibition commercial winery in the region. The visionary vintner has been producing top-quality wines ever since. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted in 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996, 30 additional acres were added. The wines under the Santa Barbara Winery label range from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to lesser known but memorable varietals. Sea breeze and sun complement a charming patio setting at the Santa Barbara Winery tasting room--located just two blocks from the Pacific Ocean in downtownSanta Barbara--a site that doubles as a production (all their wines are bottled there) and storage facility. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The small-lot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. It has become renowned for its single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Visitors to Lafond Winery & Vineyards in Buellton can enjoy the picnic area under the trees, where rustic tables overlook the vineyards, or relax on the patio that can accommodate small groups of up to 50 people. The spacious tasting room, with a view of the vineyard and working winery, invites lingering. The Lafond Winery bottlings are also poured at the Lafond City Tasting Room that was opened in 2014 next to the Santa Barbara Winery Tasting Room in Santa Barbara’s popular Funk Zone. Santa Barbara Winery and Lafond Winery are also available for private celebrations and events.
