n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today

one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette

surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and worldclass restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries.

Adventures Await at Santa Barbara Zoo

T

he Santa Barbara Zoo not only offers up-close views of more than 500 animals, but also active fun for the whole family. Feed a giraffe, scale a climbing wall, pan for treasure, slide down a giant “ant hill,” go on-stage during a live show – there are plenty of options. Also known as one of the world’s most beautiful zoos, its 32-acres are filled with mature trees, blooming flowers, a cactus garden, and a grassy hillside just perfect for rolling down. Views of the Pacific, Channel Islands, mountains, and city are visible from this oceanside bluff, once the site of a grand estate. Then, there are the animals. Meet Jari, a feisty three-year-old whitehanded gibbon who recently arrived from another zoo. She joins Jasmine, the Zoo’s longtime resident gibbon, who will be her surrogate mother for the next few years. See them frolic, swing through trees, and climb ropes on their island home. Two island foxes were found orphaned on San Nicholas Island, right off the Santa Barbara coast. Unable to fend for themselves, Lewis and Clark now delight visitors as they romp among the trees or snuggle in their hammock. Bangori and Nzinga are two relatively young Western lowland gorillas who comprise the Zoo’s “bachelor troop.” Highly intelligent and curious, they often sit right by the viewing glass, giving guests a close-up view. Get even closer by visiting – and feeding – the Zoo’s Masai giraffes. Michael, the Zoo’s male, hails from Canada, and has sired six calves since he arrived in 2011. See young Chad and younger Parker, both male, along with Michael, and females Audrey and Betty Lou. Giraffe feeding is offered most days, weather permitting. A portion of the $7 cost goes to conservation programs. You don’t need kids in tow to enjoy the penguins, elephants, lions, and more at Santa Barbara Zoo. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visit www.sbzoo.org. 22

waterfront guide THE SANTA BARBARA CITY WATERFRONT Where you can shop, dine & play all day!

T

here’s something for everyone at the Santa Barbara City Waterfront, the breathtaking span of palm-lined beaches along Cabrillo Boulevard that border the world-famous Stearns Wharf and California’s oldest – and most beautiful working harbor. The Waterfront is blessed with three picturesque, golden sand beaches. East Beach, at 1440 Cabrillo Blvd., offers picnic facilities, more than a dozen volleyball courts on the beach, and a full service restaurant. The Cabrillo Pavilion Bathhouse, built in 1927, offers showers, lockers, a weight room, beach wheelchair and volleyball rental. West Beach between Stearns Wharf and the harbor offers a picturesque sandy area for sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, wind surfing and beach volleyball on eleven acres adjoined by the wide palm tree lined walkway and bike path. The family-friendly Leadbetter Beach between the harbor and Shoreline Park offers grassy picnic and barbecue sites and attracts windsurfers, catamaran pilots, surfers and walkers. We recommend that you begin your waterfront adventure with a visit to the Santa Barbara Region of Commerce Visitor, open daily at the corner of Cabrillo Blvd and Garden Streets, where you can make reservations at hotels and restaurants and get directions and information about the area’s attractions and visitor-serving businesses. The Waterfront offers a variety of ocean-going activities like coastal cruises, sailing, whale watching, fishing, kayaking, surfing and parasailing. And for those who prefer spend more time on land, the amphibious Land Shark operated by Land & Sea Tours departs from State Street at Stearns Wharf at 12PM, 2PM and 4PM daily for a 90-minute fun-filled, narrated tour of historical landmarks that includes a cruise around the harbor and waterfront. The Santa Barbara Zoo, just off Cabrillo Blvd at East Beach, is home to 160 species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects on its 30 hilltop acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On Sundays, up to 200 resident artists display their original works under the palms along Cabrillo Blvd at the Arts & Crafts Show that is the only continuous, non-juried arts festival of drawings, paintings, graphics, sculpture, crafts and photography in the world. The historic Stearns Wharf – the longest and oldest working wooden wharf in California- is the most popular visitor attraction in the Santa Barbara area. Built in 1872 26

waterfront guide by local lumberman J.P. Stearns to unload logging ships on what had just become the longest deep-water pier between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the wharf ’s 3.8 acres of decking served the passenger and freight shipping needs of California’s South Coast for over a quarter century; and, now supports shops, restaurants, galleries, boating, parasailing facilities and the Ty Warner Sea Center, an interactive marine education facility. Free parking is available in several lots along the waterfront on Cabrillo Boulevard as well as merchant validation on the wharf itself. The Whales Of Summer ... are in the Santa Barbara Channel!

T

he Santa Barbara Channel is known as one of the best whale watching areas in the world. Giant blue whales, playful humpback whales, plus fin and minke whales, dolphins and porpoises … all are in the nutrient rich waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Over 27 different types of whales and dolphins inhabit these waters throughout the year, making this channel one of the best whale watching areas in the world.

The undisputed star of this show is the giant blue whale. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing over 150 tons, the blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on earth … by a long shot. To put it in perspective, consider that the largest land animal, the African elephant, can attain a weight of about 7 1/2 tons … the tongue of the blue whale is larger than an African elephant. With a heart as big as a Volkswagen they are truly immense animals. Blue whales show up in the channel about mid-May and can be seen through about mid-September. For pure showmanship, however, nothing beats the friendly and active humpback whales. These magnificent

36

creatures have been delighting people from all over the world with their antics – breaching, lob tailing, slapping their pectoral fins on the water and just plain mugging boats full of eager whale watchers. They often come right to the boat and play to the people – enjoying a little people watching of their own. Humpback whales are in the channel year ‘round but are plentiful May through August. Both the Blues and Humpbacks can be seen on the Condor Express’s whale watching trips, which depart daily from Sea Landing in the Santa Barbara Harbor. At any time of year, dolphins and porpoises can be sighted on the channel crossing, and sometimes we even experience the exciting Orca, or killer whale! The premier charter boat in this area, the Condor Express is powered by four 740hp diesel engines driving water jets, making the crossing to the islands in less than an hour as opposed to 3-5 hours for other boats. They provide qualified naturalists on all voyages, a galley serving hot and cold meals, even a full cocktail bar – definitely the most comfortable way to get out to see the whales! The Condor Express runs half-day Island Whale watching trips daily, and on all trips whale sightings are guaranteed! Fares are: $99 adults, $50 children 5-12 years, children under 5 free. For reservations, call (805) 882-0088 or toll free 1-888-77WHALE.

Sandpiper golf CluB Extraordinary Golf Experiences & Ocean Views!

P

erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of the top 25 public golf courses in the country. Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says Director of Golf, Kyle Oliver. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 60 660 0 60

Santa Barbara Museum of Art

Showcasing the arts of over 5000 years of human history

T

he idea for a Santa Barbara city museum originally came from the local artist Colin Campbell Cooper. When he learned that the main post office building, erected in 1912 and abandoned for several years, was going to be sold, he proposed, in a letter published in the Santa Barbara News-Press in July of 1937, that the impressive Italianate structure should be transformed into a museum. What Cooper himself described as something of a “pipedream” came to fruition just four years later, thanks to a groundswell of support from the community and the commitment of a small, passionate army of artists and civic-minded individuals. Only after the opening date was set did Buell Hammett, the first President of the Board of Trustees, contact an astrologer to determine at exactly what time of the day the doors should open; he learned that the stars and planets would be best aligned at precisely 11:43 am on June 5, 1941. At that very moment, 1,500 junior high students led visitors into the Museum, a stream of people that did not abate for months—approximately 300 a day and more than 50,000 visitors in the first six months. Upon entering, visitors were greeted, as they have more recently, by beautiful objects from Wright Ludington’s important collection of Greek and Roman antiquities as well as a substantial number of 19th- and 20th-century drawings and watercolors. From its inception, SBMA’s permanent collection has benefited from the generosity of many individual philanthropists, who have given the Museum some of its most famous works of art. Since its opening, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art has amassed nearly 28,000 works of art in its permanent collection, including paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, photographs, ceramics, glass, jades, bronzes, lacquer and textiles. These works represent the arts of Asia, Europe, and the Americas spanning over 5,000 years of human history. For the past 76 years, SBMA has played a vital role in the cultural and community life of Santa Barbara. The Museum’s founders were visionary individuals, and the current renovation project and resulting $50 million Imagine More capital campaign seeks to continue to extend the reach of the institution to, at once, make essential renovations and upgrades to an aging facility, while expanding the scope of SBMA’s exhibitions, programs, and place as a public forum for the arts in Santa Barbara and beyond. 62
