Welcome to Paradise

O

n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterranean-like abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the 6

sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and world-class restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of five Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, John Cleese, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe, Eva Marie Saint and Jonathan Winters; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield, Barnaby Conrad and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors, Fred Couples, Tommy Curren and Andy Granatelli; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Harold Simmons, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll

LOST MISSION WATERCOLORS - FOUND! Now on Exhibit in Santa Barbara

A

t the time, the lone rider made his way along the abandoned “King’s Highway” from San Diego to Sonoma visiting each of the 21 Mission locations. An order to disband the Missions had been issued in 1813 and by 1838, the Time: May, 1897 Missions were completely desecularized. Many Place: The lost trail of Padre Serra - El of the properties were used for alternative Camino Real purposes or were left to ruin. Edwin Deakin, Transportation: A rugged, fully loaded noted early California artist, made his way to pack mule each site, by horseback. Lone Figure: Edwin Deakin (1838On arrival at each site, he would have 1923) - seasoned painter of the set up camp and proceeded to take out his California Missions sketch pad and the tools of his trade: paper, Project: Paint all 21 California Missions pencils, brushes, watercolors and perhaps, oils. Where the buildings were in partial ruin, he surmised the once grand structures. Where a church was completely destroyed, he found old photos or worked from earlier paintings. Eventually, he had enough information to return to his studio in San Francisco and complete two major canvases for each of the 21 early buildings. It took two years to complete the project. The custom of the day was to 1) make drawings from multiple perspectives, 2) do some watercolor sketches and 3) sometimes do small oil studies. Today, more than 100 years later, no one knows if he did preparatory sketches in oil - if so they are lost. It is thought that Deakin completed the major Mission canvases entirely in the studio. For years historians had known that in addition to the two oils Deakin painted of each Mission, he had also completed a lone watercolor of each church. It is possible that these watercolors were completed in the field as final studies for the oils. However, the watercolors have been missing for the better part of 100 years. They have never been exhibited. Many historians simply thought they were lost. In the last few years, scholars became aware that they had survived. Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery, through a series of wonderful accidents, and the suggestion of famed San Francisco art dealer, Alfred Harrison, located the original artworks in the hands of knowledgeable and astute collectors in the Bay Area. As it turns out an earlier Santa Barbaran, Harold Willoughby (1892-1989) was responsible for finding and preserving them. For the first time ever, they will be displayed at Sullivan Goss from March - June along with the incredible story of their survival. 18

ecently featured on Discovery Channel as the world’s best whale watching area, the Santa Barbara Channel abounds with migrating gray whales in the winter and early spring, and the giant blue and humpback whales in the summer months. The Santa Barbara Channel is recognized as one of the world’s prime areas for whale watching. The unique East-West configuration of the channel and the converging ocean currents in the area provide ideal conditions during the summer months for the blooming of large quantities of krill, the favored food for blue and humpback whales...and Santa Barbara lies right on the path of the migrating California gray whales, making Santa Barbara one of the favored viewing spots on the West Coast. The charter boat CONDOR Express, in conjunction with museums around the world, offers whale watching trips throughout the various whale seasons to carry whale watchers, researchers and TV and film crews into the channel to experience these remarkable animals. The California Gray whales, which now number over 25,000 animals (they are now back to their pre-whaling population), migrate past the channel islands in December, January and February as they move southward toward their calving and mating grounds in Baja. From mid February through the end of April, the herd travels with the newborn calves close by Santa Barbara as they return to their feeding grounds in Alaska...completing a phenomenal 12,000 mile migration. Blue and humpback whales are regular visitors to channel waters, with pods of animals 28

being sighted during summer and fall months. From May through October, blues and/or humpbacks are sighted in the waters surrounding Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands... and during the busiest times they are joined by fin and minke whales, so that it often is possible to see all four species of whales feeding in the same area at the same time. Such a biodiversity in regards the great whales is seldom seen outside of the nutrient rich waters of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The blue whale is the largest animal ever to be on the face of the earth. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing 100 tons or more, blue whales are larger by far than the largest of the dinosaurs and immensely larger than anything on earth today. The largest land animal is the elephant, weighting about 6 tons. The tongue of the blue whale is larger than an elephant...in fact, a blue whale is about as massive as a whole herd of elephants. Trips to view the whales of Santa Barbara are run aboard the new CONDOR Express, one of the most comfortable charter boats in California. A jet powered catamaran, the Condor Express features all around seating on deck, a spacious sundeck and a full galley, serving hot and cold meals, soft drinks and a full cocktail bar. All whale watching trips are expertly narrated by naturalists providing you with information about the whales, dolphins and sea birds seen on the trip, as well as the natural history of this fascinating area. For whale watching trips or information, visit www.condorexpress.com or call: CondoR Express at (805) 882-0088 or 1-888-77-WHALE; and the Museum of Natural History at (805) 682-4711.

BOATHOUSE RESTAURANT

P

Santa Barbara’s Finest On The Beach

erched atop the sand on secluded and beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach, better known as Hendry’s to locals, sits one of Santa Barbara’s newest and most exiting restaurants. The Boathouse at Hendry’s, Brought to us by the same family who started the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co and Santa Barbara FisHouse is truly a feast for all the senses. In the mornings, you can dine on the expansive patio and watch the sun rise over the coatal range to the east. In the evenings, gorgeous shades of red, orange and purple from the sunset to the west, flood the entire restaurant. The Boathouse at Hendry’s also offers an excellent escape without ever leaving town, one is struck with the sense they have been transported to a remote and tropical place, while just minutes from downtown. It is difficult to see any signs of development from any part of the Boathouse, with the ocean on one side, the Douglass Preserve on the other and Hope Ranch to the north. Dolphins in the surf just out front seem to be a daily occurance, and in season migrating whales are also common. The best part of the visit however is the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily and the menus feature some of the best executed familiar favorites I’ve seen, as well as many very tasty unique dishes. The signature breakfast is incredible; real Dungeness crab cakes over breakfast potatoes topped with poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise; amazing! Corn beef hash was never tops on my list, but tasting it at the Boathouse nearly qualified as a life changing experience. The serving bordered on gigantic, but in no time it was gone; the best I have ever tasted. Of course all the usual favorites are there, pancakes, waffles, French toast, eggs benedict, thick applewood smoked bacon and eggs etc. I recommend weekdays, or get there early on the weekend. Lunch is a very fun experience at the Boathouse, it’s busy, beautiful and again, delicious. Try the Mahi Salad with mandarins and crispy wontons, or the Shrimp Louie, or the Lobster Tacos. The cioppino is excellent, and the Seared Ahi Club on ciabatta is fantastic, although huge. Fresh fish specials abound and generally two to three oyster varieties can be had. Dinner dresses up nicely at the Boathouse, with the servers donning all black and a quiet elegance complimenting the natural beauty of the place. Stuffy would never be a word to describe the Boathouse, with beachgoers in flip flops as welcome as those in their designer apparel. The food at dinner is quite special. Appetizers such as Giant Mesquite Grilled Prawns on sourdough with scampi butter, Spiced Chicken Cigarillos, and Pan Fried Dungeness Crab Cakes start of a delicious meal, or make a meal in themselves. The mesquite grills beautifully cook many fish delicacies, such as Ahi Tuna, Yellowtail, Arctic Char, Mahi Mahi, White Sea Bass, as well as Newport Beef Ribteyes, Top Sirloins, and New York Steaks, as well as the truly sinful Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with blue cheese compound butter and fried Maui onions. End it with a molten chocolate cake or McConnell’s ice cream mudd pie and you are in heaven. 350 6

The Land Shark

Showing you Santa Barbara by Land and Sea!

P

erhaps you’ve seen the big colorful boat on wheels cruising the streets of Santa Barbara with passengers smiling on it. And perhaps you’ve wondered, “What is that thing? And where is it going?” Well, it’s eventually going to splash into the sea! That’s right, the 39’ “Land Shark” is one-half bus and onehalf boat, and is the only way to see Santa Barbara by both land  and sea. Up to 49 passengers are treated to a 90-minute tour of Santa Barbara’s historical landmarks and rich maritime history, which

is personally narrated in a most humorous and entertaining style. Adults are enthralled with the city’s unique history and architecture, while children can’t wait to splash into the ocean. Suddenly, after 60 minutes of land cruising, the Land Shark reaches the boat-launching ramp and, with an amusing airline-style safety and life jacket demonstration by the tour guide, splashes into the big blue sea. 56

For the next 30 minutes, passengers are now cruising the beautiful harbor and Santa Barbara waterfront, with exquisite views of the city and mountainous backdrop as seen only from a boat. The witty tour guide tells of maritime legends and the colorful history of Stearns Wharf (California’s oldest working wharf ), the Breakwater and the coastal oil platforms. And perhaps even more fun is the citing of numerous marine mammals, such as seals, sea lions, dolphins and local sea birds, who seem unafraid of this “Land Shark.” The comical tour guide now displays his knowledge as a marine naturalist. As the boat climbs back to dry land and returns to its original departure area near State Street and Stearns Wharf, it is not uncommon to hear children ask their parents “Can we do that again?” This fun-filled amphibious adventure is truly one of Santa Barbara’s “Must-Dos.” Land & Sea Tours offers these adventures daily at 12pm & 2pm (and 4pm in summer). Tickets are only $25 for adults, and $15 for kids 10 and under. Reservations are not required. A jacket or sweatshirt is suggested, and don’t forget your camera! Private tours and sunset cocktail cruises are also available. For more information, call (805) 683-7600, or visit their website at www.out2seeSB.com

WELCOME TO RANCHO SAN MARCOS Where The Golf Gods Play

C

onveniently located off highway 154, just 15 minutes west of the Santa Barbara beaches, and 15 minutes east of the wine country community of Santa Ynez and Danish village town of Solvang, Rancho San Marcos Golf Course delivers a new level of golf course quality and customer service.

“At Rancho San Marcos Golf Course, golf isn’t just a game. It’s an experience.” - Golf Today An instant classic since its inception in 1998, this Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course located on 300 spectacular acres is both a treasure to behold and a strategic challenge that exudes the understated elegance and exclusivity that only private clubs extol. Rancho San Marcos offers magnificent vistas surrounded only by nature’s beauty adorned by centuries-old oak trees and stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley, distant furrowed peaks, and eagles soaring above Lake Cachuma – without a trace of urban development in sight. This world class course, tucked deep into the valley floor of the Santa Ynez Mountains has kept the 60 60

essence of the old ranch which was located here since the Spanish land grant of 1804. The simple and pastoral setting combined with the classic game of golf, makes Rancho San Marcos the ideal location to forget the troubles of the world and reminisce on a quieter, simpler time. At 6,939 yards and a par 71, Rancho San Marcos provides golfers of all skill levels such an enjoyable and rewarding golf experience that Golf Magazine named this Ty Warner property one of the “Top 10 Golf Courses You Can Play”, and, Golf Digest awarded it 4 ½ stars among the top 201 golf courses in the United States. Rancho San Marcos and its stunning scenery have also been featured in national advertising campaigns for both print and television. Archeological evidence discovered at Rancho San Marcos indicates that Prehistoric hunters and gathers occupied this region for more then 9,000 years. Descendants of the Chumash Indian tribe, one of North America’s most complex hunting and gathering societies, were active participants in Rancho San Marcos archaeological investigations. For more information about this spectacular golf experience, call (805) 683.6334 or visit www.rsm1804.com.

Solvang - A Little Taste of Denmark in Our Own Backyard!

O

ver 200 years ago, a group of Danish educators from the Midwest ventured west and developed a village that is, today, one of the principal tourist destinations in the country. Located inland, along the Central California Coast, 45 miles north of Santa Barbara, this village of 5,300 represents a page from a Hans Christian Andersen story. The authenticity of Solvang’s Danish architecture features simulated thatch & gleaming copper roofs, attractive dormers, stained glass windows and patches of cobblestone sidewalks. Dane’s believe a stork on your roof will bring good luck - evident by the array of artificial storks that grace the chimneys and rooflines of many of the homes and buildings. It is also a town of flags. Shops, businesses and homes proudly display the Stars & Stripes as well as the red & white Dannebrog, the world’s oldest flag. Solvang is home to two museums one of which is the Elverhoj Museum, housed in a replica of a Danish farmhouse and devoted to the cultural heritage of Solvang. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum, located downtown, features a large collection of the author’s books and displays on the life, art & love of Denmark’s most famous and beloved author. 62

Tours of the town are provided daily in the spring, summer and fall and weekends in the winter via Honen (“The Hen”), a replica of a Copenhagen street car of the early 1900’s and powered by a pair of massive Belgian horses. You won’t want to miss Danish Days in September – celebrated with traditions passed down from generations. Huge Danish & American flags line the flower-lined streets and residents proudly wear colorful native costumes. Join in the dancing singing lively entertainment and authentic delicious food. Among the myriad of Danish bakeries and smorgasbord cuisine, there are more than 150 one-of-a-kind boutiques featuring antiques & collectibles, crafted Danish imports, furnishings, gourmet gifts, toy stores, art galleries, clothing & shoe boutiques as well as wineries & wine-tasting rooms. Solvang means “Sunny Field” and indeed you will agree as this pedestrian friendly village boasts year round temperate weather, sunny skies & warm, friendly hospitality. Visit www.solvangusa.com for further information on what Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley have to offer.
