n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today 6

one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that

surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and worldclass restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries.

This is the home of five Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe, Eva Marie Saint and Steve Martin; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Milt Larsen, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield, Barnaby and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors, Fred Couples, Tommy Curren, Chuck Liddell and Andy Granatelli; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Harold Simmons, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll 7

orn in New York, Wendy Foster grew up in Santa Barbara, spending her summer vacations at her mother’s home in Massachusetts. She always had an independent streak and ended up leaving home at age 17, not returning home until her late twenties. She attended college in Mexico, Massachusetts and Paris. During this period of time she really go the travel bug and decided to get more education by traveling the world. And she did just that, for 10 years all by herself. When she first decided to open a store she looked in her own closet and drawers and counted the number of items in each category, shirts, blouses, t-shirts, pants, jackets etc. She quickly realized the appropriate proportions and purchased her merchandise for her store based on her own personal assessment of her wardrobe. Three tops to every bottom and it was just right! Of course, that has changed since then and continues to change each season. Her stores always stock a well edited selection and the seasoned sales associates have the most discerning and honest eyes in the business. Wendy now has 4 stores and a new one opening in Los Olivos (Santa Ynez Valley) on June Wendy Foster 15, 2013. The first stores were and still are in the Upper Village in Montecito. Wendy Foster, Wendy Foster Upstairs and Angel. The square footage grew to about 10,000 square feet in Montecito and includes a “gourmetisserie” operated by her husband, Pierre Lafond and Pierre Lafond’s wonderful Wine Bistro which also has a full cocktail bar. Your shopping experience will feature housewares, tabletops, garden, children’s wear, books, men’s wear, bedding, wine, chocolates and gifts. Wendy Foster State Street, one of downtown Santa Barbara’s premier shopping destinations for over 20 years, offers shoppers the opportunity to create entire coordinated outfits, often featuring lines designed locally or not available elsewhere, from an extensive inventory of clothing and accessories. Wendy travels to Paris to do much of her buying, bringing collections of the European culture back for local fashion lovers to cherish. She recently commented on her unique recipe for successful buying. “Because of my traveling and interests, I don’t just rely on going to the fashion trade shows. I don’t just sit back and pick things from what’s being presented to me. I’m proactive I may see someone on the street and run after her to ask when she got her clothes. I’m always aware of what’s going on around me, what people look like and what’s coming soon.” Each clothing store also has its own buyer therefore a different identity and individuality but with the Wendy Foster touch. All of the buyers worked with Wendy for some time before they became buyers. Wendy and her husband Pierre Lafond also own the Pierre LaFond Wine Bistro at 516 State Street in Santa Barbara and 516 San Ysidro Road in Montecito, the Santa Barbara Winery at 202 Anacapa Street in Santa Barbara and Lafond Winery in Buellton. 14

New at the Zoo Dinosaurs & Giraffe Calves By Julia McHugh

The Santa Barbara Zoo welcomes several new residents this summer including two gangly Masai giraffe calves and some high tech dinosaurs. Gangly Giraffe Calves Both the Zoo’s female Masai giraffes gave birth in April, just ten days apart. Audrey gave birth first, to a male calf, named Dane. Betty Lou’s female calf is named Sunshine. Michael, the proud papa, arrived from Canada in January 2012. He is genetically valuable, making this an even more welcome event. He’s now separated from the others by a temporary “baby” fence installed in the giraffe yard. “This is standard giraffe management after new births,” reports Sheri Horiszny, the Zoo’s Director of Animal Programs. “The calves need to get a little bigger before they meet their giant dad. He’s 18 feet tall!” The fence should come down soon and the giraffe family all can be together. The adults can be hand-fed at the Giraffe Deck. Check at Admissions for the feeding schedule. Dinosaurs on Stage Another tall arrival is a 16-foot long, 10-foot high parasaurolophus. Aren’t dinosaurs extinct? Not at the Zoo, where “Lily” is one of three engaging dinosaurs who appear in the live stage show “Dino Doc.” She joins Duncan, the Zoo’s popular T. Rex who arrived in 2011, and an adorable hand-held “baby” triceratops. During the family-friendly 15-minute lively presentation, human hosts show how veterinarians treat the Zoo’s animal residents. “We can’t bring elephants out every day to show a check up,” says Horiszny. “But we can use these realistic looking dinosaurs to show what it entails, and let kids help with the exams.” Lily has a surprise in store: she sneezes (don’t worry, it’s water). Maybe she has a cold? Young volunteers from the audience listen to the dinosaurs’ heartbeats, check their eyes and ears, and do other exams. After each show, the dinosaurs stay on stage for photos. The Zoo’s dinosaurs were designed and hand-built by the Chiodo Bros., a Hollywood “creature shop,” and are sponsored by the Duncan family. Show are daily through Labor Day and are free with Zoo admission. After Labor Day, “Dino Doc” is on weekends only. Audience seating is on a grassy hillside. The Santa Barbara Zoo is the region’s number one visitor attraction and is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.sbzoo.org. 20

Transforming Spaces!

Maryvonne LaParliere Art Exhibited at The Oliver & Espig Gallery of Fine Art

I

can still remember my little kindergarten school table in my native country of France. I remember how my young four-year-old nose was nearly pressed onto my drawing paper as I feverishly created. The environment around me seemed to vanish. I was alone. The only thing that mattered at that moment was my painting of a cherry pie. Only Heaven knew how my young heart would ache if I could not capture the rich, decadent color of the custard! My passion for art, fanned in the flames of my youth, still burns intensely today. I was born to be an Artist! Later, I enrolled in the famous art school, “Les Beaux Arts.” At that time, Acrylic painting was just beginning to gain recognition as a medium. I tried it. I loved it. Since then, I have achieved wonders with it. I also discovered that the flat, four-cornered canvas was too confining for me. I love space. I wanted to go further, outside of the frame, so I did. I began to incorporate the three dimensional world into painting scenery on the entire surface of furniture. When I moved to California in 1986, handMural by Maryvonne LaParliere painted furniture, especially the way I did it, was rarely seen. My painted furniture got attention right away. In 1988, the national magazine, “Victorian Sampler,” in which my work was featured reported that, “Maryvonne LaParliere was one of the precursors and perhaps the one to establish the concept of painting an entire scene on a piece of furniture...” From there, I naturally progressed to painting on walls. I delightedly embellished murals of all sizes and shapes. I love space. I feel comfortable with it and know how to use it. I believe it just comes naturally to me. Over the years I have created the most intricate scenes; pastoral countrysides, rich and diverse landscapes, breathtaking oceans, wild jungles, and untamed forests. I have also beautifully captured renditions of many other elements of the world such as people, animals, flowers and the change of seasons. Over the years, I have noticed the charm and attraction that children have for my paintings. Perhaps it is because children sense that I have kept my inner child alive? I create with spontaneity, fundamental happiness, unbridled genius, and sheer and utter delight in the Nature I behold! 22

here’s something for everyone at the Santa Barbara City Waterfront, the breathtaking span of palm-lined beaches along Cabrillo Boulevard that border the world-famous Stearns Wharf and California’s oldest – and most beautiful - working harbor. The Waterfront is blessed with three picturesque, golden sand beaches. East Beach, at 1440 Cabrillo Blvd., offers picnic facilities, more than a dozen volleyball courts on the beach, and a full service restaurant. The Cabrillo Pavilion Bathhouse, built in 1927, offers showers, lockers, a weight room, beach wheelchair and volleyball rental. West Beach between Stearns Wharf and the harbor offers a picturesque sandy area for sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, wind surfing and beach volleyball on eleven acres adjoined by the wide palm tree lined walkway and bike path. The family-friendly Leadbetter Beach between the harbor and Shoreline Park offers grassy picnic and barbecue sites and attracts windsurfers, catamaran pilots, surfers and walkers. We recommend that you begin your waterfront adventure with a visit to the Santa Barbara Region of Commerce Visitor, open daily at the corner of Cabrillo Blvd and Garden Streets, where you can make reservations at hotels and restaurants and get directions and information about the area’s attractions and visitor-serving businesses. The Waterfront offers a variety of ocean-going activities like coastal cruises, sailing, whale watching, fishing, kayaking, surfing and parasailing. And for those who prefer spend more time on land, the amphibious Land Shark operated by Land & Sea Tours departs from State Street at Stearns Wharf at 12PM, 2PM and 4PM daily for a 90-minute fun-filled, narrated tour of historical landmarks that includes a cruise around the harbor and waterfront. The Santa Barbara Zoo, just off Cabrillo Blvd at East Beach, is home to 160 species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects on its 30 hilltop acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On Sundays, up to 200 resident artists display their original works under the palms along Cabrillo Blvd at the Arts & Crafts Show that is the only continuous, non-juried arts festival of drawings, paintings, graphics, sculpture, crafts and photography in the world. The historic Stearns Wharf – the longest and oldest working wooden wharf in California- is the most popular visitor attraction in the Santa Barbara area. Built in 1872 by local lumberman J.P. The surfing inspired Endless Summer Bar CafĂŠ at the Harbor was recently named one of the “ten best spots around the West to enjoy seafood along with a seaside viewâ€?

THE WHaLES Of SUMMER ... are in the Santa Barbara Channel!

T

he Santa Barbara Channel is known as one of the best whale watching areas in the world. Giant blue whales, playful humpback whales, plus fin and minke whales, dolphins and porpoises … all are in the nutrient rich waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Over 27 different types of whales and dolphins inhabit these waters throughout the year, making this channel one of the best whale watching areas in the world. The undisputed star of this show is

the giant blue whale. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing over 150 tons, the blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on earth … by a long shot. To put it in perspective, consider that the largest land animal, the African elephant, can attain a weight of about 7 1/2 tons … the tongue of the blue whale is larger than an African elephant. With a heart as big as a Volkswagen they are truly immense animals. Blue whales show up in the channel about mid-May and can be seen through about mid-September. For pure showmanship, however, nothing beats the friendly and active humpback whales. These magnificent creatures have been delighting people 34

from all over the world with their antics – breaching, lob tailing, slapping their pectoral fins on the water and just plain mugging boats full of eager whale watchers. They often come right to the boat and play to the people – enjoying a little people watching of their own. Humpback whales are in the channel year ‘round but are plentiful May through August. Both the Blues and Humpbacks can be seen on the Condor Express’s whale watching trips, which depart daily from Sea Landing in the Santa Barbara Harbor. At any time of year, dolphins and porpoises can be sighted on the channel crossing, and sometimes we even experience the exciting Orca, or killer whale! The premier charter boat in this area, the Condor Express is powered by four 740hp diesel engines driving water jets, making the crossing to the islands in less than an hour as opposed to 3-5 hours for other boats. They provide qualified naturalists on all voyages, a galley serving hot and cold meals, even a full cocktail bar – definitely the most comfortable way to get out to see the whales! The Condor Express runs half-day Island Whale watching trips daily, and on all trips whale sightings are guaranteed! Fares are: $99 adults, $50 children 5-12 years, children under 5 free. For reservations, call (805) 882-0088 or toll free 1-888-77WHALE.

World Class Varietal Wines

ierre Lafond has played a pioneering role in the history of Santa Barbara County’s wine industry since 1962 when he opened Santa Barbara Winery--the first post-prohibition commercial winery in the region. The visionary vintner has been producing top-quality wines ever since. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted in 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996, 30 additional acres were added. The wines under the Santa Barbara Winery label range from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to lesser known but memorable varietals such as Primitivo and Lagrein. Sea breeze and sun complement a charming patio setting at the Santa Barbara Winery tasting room--located just two blocks from the Pacific Ocean in downtown Santa Barbara--a site that doubles as a production (all their wines are bottled there) and storage facility. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The smalllot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. It has become renowned for its single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Visitors to Lafond Winery can enjoy the picnic area under the trees, where rustic tables overlook the vineyards, or relax on the newly installed patio that can accommodate small groups of up to 50 people. The spacious tasting room, with a view of the vineyard and working winery, invites lingering. Santa Barbara Winery and Lafond Winery are also available for private celebrations and events. SANDPIPER GOLF CLUB

Extraordinary Golf Experiences & Ocean Views!!

P

erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of American’s top 75 upscale golf courses. Sandpiper was included in the 2011 Top 40 Golf Courses in the State of California – Golf Digest

Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says General Manager & Director of Golf, D.J. Limardi. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 60 60
