n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterranean-like abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the 6

sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and world-class restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of five Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe and Eva Marie Saint, singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Milt Larsen, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield, Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors and Tommy Curren; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll

ifty years ago, Architect Pierre Lafond started a wine and spirits store at 516 San Ysidro Road in Montecito, the Plaza del Sol. With his laser-like sense of direction and style, the store started branching out. In 1974 he met and married Wendy Foster. Together a wonderful partnership was formed. Wendy concentrated on the clothing and Pierre on the food, wine and home. Wendy now has 5 clothing stores, 3 in Montecito, including Angel, 1 downtown at Canon Perdido and State, and now a year-old store in Los Olivos. Wendy travels to Paris to do much of her buying, bringing collections of the European culture back for local fashion lovers to cherish. She recently commented on her unique recipe for successful buying. “Because of my traveling and interests, I don’t just rely on going to the fashion trade shows. I don’t just sit back and pick things from what’s being presented to me. I’m proactive I may see someone on the street and run after her to ask when Wendy Foster she got her clothes. I’m always aware of what’s going on around me, what people look like and what’s coming soon.” Each clothing store also has its own buyer therefore a different identity and individuality but with the Wendy Foster touch. All of the buyers worked with Wendy for some time before they became buyers. Wendy was born to do this work. It has consumed her, and she has put her DNA into Santa Barbara Style, and its way of thinking of the clothes they wear. Shelley Koury has worked for years making a fabulously successful “destination”, artisinal shop “Upstairs” in The Plaza del Sol, Montecito, which is now entirely run by Wendy and Pierre, including the great new Wine Bistro. Taste California’s fresh bounty in every dish. Wendy and her husband Pierre Lafond also own the Pierre LaFond Wine Bistro at 516 State Street in Santa Barbara and 516 San Ysidro Road in Montecito, the Santa Barbara Winery at 202 Anacapa Street in Santa Barbara and Lafond Winery in Buellton. 14

Tielle MoneTTe - BurSTing ForTh and Breaking Free Oliver & Espig Gallery of Fine Arts

I

have been a creative soul from a very young age. As a young child, creativity through artistic expression was nurtured. Upon graduation from high school, I had won every art scholarship and art award available to me. I proceeded to graduate from Allan Hancock College with an Associate of Arts Degree in Art and an AA Degree in Liberal Arts. I then completed the Graphic Art and Visual Communications Certificate programs from UCSB Extension. Later, I attended UCSB and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and a Minor in Art History, also receiving an Award of Excellence in Art upon graduation. My artistic focus has been in mixed media with an emphasis on graphic design and advertising. I am drawn to captivating and visually graphic images that break free from the flat surface; this is an overall theme in my art. With each piece, I hold the completed image in my head. Often, inspiration comes to me in a dream or an image flash that I hold and focus on. I am then consumed with thoughts of its creation. I lay awake envisioning the physical steps I will undertake for each idea. My art demands that I utilize many different techniques, elements, materials and processes. I then 26

begin my progression of research and self-education to solve the complexities in the creation of my art; many times I am learning at least three completely new techniques for each piece. When all chosen methods are combined together, they bring my unique abstract ideas into reality. Before a work is completed, I have often performed countless trials and errors of experimentation in an effort to discover the technique that will allow

the vision in my head to manifest onto the canvas. The creative concepts in my head are bold and rich, dramatic and dynamic and burst fourth into space. I strive to break free from traditional artistic confinements and utilize graphic elements to express deep emotions. Visit Oliver & Espig Gallery of Fine Arts at 1108 State Street in the heart of historical downtown Santa Barbara.

CASA BLANCA RESTAURANT & CANTINA Where All Your Senses Come Alive!

S

anta Barbara’s new edition on lower State Street, Casa Blanca Restaurant and Cantina is truly a feast for all the senses. Local architect Jeff Shelton’s design will both amuse, fascinate and captivate the visitor with such features as a solid black Acacia hand carved bar, hand blown glass bulbs hanging from the ceiling, 5,000 square feet of custom designed cement tile - one discovers something new to marvel on every visit to Casa Blanca. While soaking in the magnificent surroundings either on the warmly lit fire warmed patio or spectacular dining room, one discovers that this is not just a pretty package - the best reason to visit is Chef Onofre Zuniga’s wonderful food being prepared in the display kitchen. Mexican classics like chile rellenos, tamales and fajitas, as well as specialties like the Puerco en salsa tomate, shrimp stuffed pasilla chile and paella mariscos fill plates and bellies alike. Authentic tacos al pastor cooked on the traditional spit are as delicious as they are fun to watch being prepared. If Tequila is your thing, Casa Blanca is heaven on earth for you. Nearly 200 varieties stock the bar (don’t try them all in one night) and try them in an ingenious cocktail list that includes fresh prickly pear, cucumber or blood orange margaritas, fresh grapefruit palomas and white wine and fresh fruit sangria. With a bar and dining patio, large lounge area, booth and table seating as well as private dining area for events, Casa Blanca is fast becoming a Santa Barbara icon. Located on the corner of State and Gutierrez Streets, the central downtown location is ideal to take a State Street stroll from after dinner if you happen to eat a little bit too much. Close to theatres, the beach, shopping and with lots of available parking in the area Casa Blanca is a must eat on any visitor or locals calendar. Open seven days a week starting at 11 for lunch, 5 for dinner, and a fun and delicious Mexican Brunch on Sundays at 10, reservations are recommended. Located at 330 State Street at the corner of State & Gutierrez, (805) 845-8966 32

Boathouse RestauRant

P

Santa Barbara’s Finest On The Beach

erched atop the sand on secluded and beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach, better known as Hendry’s to locals, sits one of Santa Barbara’s newest and most exiting restaurants. The Boathouse at Hendry’s, Brought to us by the same family who started the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co and Santa Barbara FisHouse is truly a feast for all the senses. In the mornings, you can dine on the expansive patio and watch the sun rise over the coatal range to the east. In the evenings, gorgeous shades of red, orange and purple from the sunset to the west, flood the entire restaurant. The Boathouse at Hendry’s also offers an excellent escape without ever leaving town, one is struck with the sense they have been transported to a remote and tropical place, while just minutes from downtown. It is difficult to see any signs of development from any part of the Boathouse, with the ocean on one side, the Douglass Preserve on the other and Hope Ranch to the north. Dolphins in the surf just out front seem to be a daily occurance, and in season migrating whales are also common. The best part of the visit however is the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily and the menus feature some of the best executed familiar favorites I’ve seen, as well as many very tasty unique dishes. The signature breakfast is incredible; real Dungeness crab cakes over breakfast potatoes topped with poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise; amazing! Corn beef hash was never tops on my list, but tasting it at the Boathouse nearly qualified as a life changing experience. The serving bordered on gigantic, but in no time it was gone; the best I have ever tasted. Of course all the usual favorites are there, pancakes, waffles, French toast, eggs benedict, thick applewood smoked bacon and eggs etc. I recommend weekdays, or get there early on the weekend. Lunch is a very fun experience at the Boathouse, it’s busy, beautiful and again, delicious. Try the Mahi Salad with mandarins and crispy wontons, or the Shrimp Louie, or the Lobster Tacos. The cioppino is excellent, and the Seared Ahi Club on ciabatta is fantastic, although huge. Fresh fish specials abound and generally two to three oyster varieties can be had. Dinner dresses up nicely at the Boathouse, with the servers donning all black and a quiet elegance complimenting the natural beauty of the place. Stuffy would never be a word to describe the Boathouse, with beachgoers in flip flops as welcome as those in their designer apparel. The food at dinner is quite special. Appetizers such as Giant Mesquite Grilled Prawns on sourdough with scampi butter, Spiced Chicken Cigarillos, and Pan Fried Dungeness Crab Cakes start of a delicious meal, or make a meal in themselves. The mesquite grills beautifully cook many fish delicacies, such as Ahi Tuna, Yellowtail, Arctic Char, Mahi Mahi, White Sea Bass, as well as Newport Beef Ribteyes, Top Sirloins, and New York Steaks, as well as the truly sinful Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with blue cheese compound butter and fried Maui onions. End it with a molten chocolate cake or McConnell’s ice cream mudd pie and you are in heaven. 50 40

onveniently located off highway 154, just 15 minutes west of the Santa Barbara beaches, and 15 minutes east of the wine country community of Santa Ynez and Danish village town of Solvang, Rancho San Marcos Golf Course delivers a new level of golf course quality and customer service.

“At Rancho San Marcos Golf Course, golf isn’t just a game. It’s an experience.” - Golf Today An instant classic since its inception in 1998, this Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course located on 300 spectacular acres is both a treasure to behold and a strategic challenge that exudes the understated elegance and exclusivity that only private clubs extol. Rancho San Marcos offers magnificent vistas surrounded only by nature’s beauty adorned by centuries-old oak trees and stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley, distant furrowed peaks, and eagles soaring above Lake Cachuma – without a trace of urban development in sight. This world class course, tucked deep into the valley floor of the Santa Ynez Mountains has kept the 60 60

essence of the old ranch which was located here since the Spanish land grant of 1804. The simple and pastoral setting combined with the classic game of golf, makes Rancho San Marcos the ideal location to forget the troubles of the world and reminisce on a quieter, simpler time. At 6,939 yards and a par 71, Rancho San Marcos provides golfers of all skill levels such an enjoyable and rewarding golf experience that Golf Magazine named this Ty Warner property one of the “Top 10 Golf Courses You Can Play”, and, Golf Digest awarded it 4 ½ stars among the top 201 golf courses in the United States. Rancho San Marcos and its stunning scenery have also been featured in national advertising campaigns for both print and television. Archeological evidence discovered at Rancho San Marcos indicates that Prehistoric hunters and gathers occupied this region for more then 9,000 years. Descendants of the Chumash Indian tribe, one of North America’s most complex hunting and gathering societies, were active participants in Rancho San Marcos archaeological investigations. For more information about this spectacular golf experience, call (805) 683.6334 or visit www.rsm1804.com.
