n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterranean-like abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the 66

sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and world-class restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of six Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe and Eva Marie Saint; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Milt Larsen, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield, Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors and Tommy Curren; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll

Holiday Shopping in Santa Barbara The Best Places to Find the Perfect Gifts!

The Best Places to Find the Perfect Gifts!

Holiday shopping in Santa Barbara is a rewarding experience and there’s no greater reward than discovering the eclectic mix of locally owned boutiques, galleries and shops that are some of the best places to find the perfect gifts in paradise on the pacific. We’ll begin at Loreto Plaza at the corner of State and Los Positas streets where you can enjoy a luxurious spa treatment at 33 Jewels Qui Si Bella Eco-Wellness Spa and find quality skin care products, candles, exotic scents and gift certificates for that special person on your list. Loreto Plaza is also the home of the iconic Chaucer’s Bookstore, Santa Barbara’s much-loved bookseller since 1974 where you can browse a selection of over 150,000 titles in 300 sections; and, The Golf Klub, the locals favorite retail store that offers golf apparel, balls, bags, rangefinders, gloves, golf accessories and state-of-the-art computer club fitting. From Loreto Plaza, we recommend you travel south on State Street to Downtown Santa Barbara, where you’ll find the area’s highest concentration of retail shopping treasures in the eleven blocks from Sola Street south to Highway 101 with abundant public parking off Chapala and Anacapa streets and open-air trolleys, electric shuttle buses and pedi-cabs available to help you navigate the most beautiful downtown on the California coast. As you enter the downtown area, be sure to visit Natasha, the contemporary women’s clothing boutique in Victoria Court at 1231 State Street that specializes in easy care, easy wear casual clothing in natural fabrics made in California as well as the area’s largest selection of Citron and Cutloose apparel and a wide selection of accessories, shoes, bags, jewelry and hats. And since you’re just across the street from the box office at the beautifully restored Granada Theatre at 1214 State Street, may we suggest that tickets to the State Street Ballet’s December 19th or 20th performances of The Nutcracker, the holiday family favorite set to the unforgettable music of Tchaikovsky performed with a full orchestra or the Santa Barbara Symphony’s New Years Eve Pops Concert, the best New Year’s Eve celebration on the coast with nationally acclaimed Conductor Nir Kabaretti directing the perfect mix The Yes Store (Continued on page 18)

shaped or cut-out by hand and assembled into a form that ensures no two finished pieces are the same. If all this downtown shopping has whet your appetite for some world class cuisine, we recommend lunch or dinner at The Natural Café at 508 State Street or the great Mexican food and adult beverages at Casa Blanca Restaurant & Cantina at 330 State Street. If your travels have taken you closer to the Pacific, we recommend lunch or dinner at the Santa Barbara Fishouse at 101 East Cabrillo Boulevard for the finest seafood from exotic distant nets to the freshest local catch; and, if you’ve wandered near the Harbor, we invite you to enjoy classic Santa Barbara dining by the boats, under the sails, at Chuck’s Waterfront Grill or the casual dining atmosphere on the patio at the Breakwater Restaurant. Before we leave Santa Barbara for the lush coastal community of Montecito where celebrity residents like Oprah Natasha Winfrey, Kirk Douglas, Rob Lowe and numerous other famous entertainers, artists and writers are often spotted in the area’s upscale boutiques, galleries, fine restaurants and world class hotels; we recommend a visit to Santa Barbara Winery, to enjoy the wine tasting room at the area’s oldest winery just two blocks from the beach in the Funk Zone at 202 Anacapa Street; or, visit next door to sample the renowned Lafond Winery single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that are available at The Lafond City Tasting Room. If you need a break from your holiday shopping extravaganza, we suggest you visit the Santa Barbara Zoo that is known as one of the world’s most beautiful zoos and is home to 160 species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects exhibited in open, naturalistic habitats overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Andree Clark Bird Refuge and the Santa Ynez Mountains. Montecito is divided into the two areas shown on the map on page 16 of this magazine. The Upper Village near the corners of East Valley Road and San Ysidro Road is bordered by the historic San Ysidro Ranch, the luxury resort that is considered to be one of the most romantic hideaways in the world. The Lower Village on Coast Village Road between Olive Mill Road and Hot Springs Road is bordered by the palatial Four Seasons Biltmore that combines the glory of historic California with legendary Four Seasons service. We’ll begin this phase of our holiday shopping adventure in the Upper Village at Wendy Foster in the Plaza del Sol at 516 San Ysidro Road, the flagship of four stores that this local fashion icon owns in the greater Santa Barbara area. Wendy Foster was raised in Montecito and this store has earned a national reputation for showcasing her classic luxury fashion collections from New York, Paris, Los Angeles and Asian based designers, and, her unique hand picked jewelry selections in artfully designed displays. The Plaza del Sol is also home to the Pierre LaFond Montecito Market where you’ll find a wide array of unique gift baskets, olive oil, vinegar and other culinary treats. 19

SULLIVAN GOSS An American Gallery 11 East Anapamu St., 730-1460 sullivangoss.com Sullivan Goss has represented the work of American artists for 25 years. The contributions of these artists, from the 19th century to today, can be found in their two galleries in downtown Santa Barbara. With an inventory of over 3,000 works, including paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints and sculptures, Sullivan Goss is the primary West Coast gallery positioned to help build private and public collections of important American art. The downtown location offers approximately twenty exhibitions each year, including solo shows for contemporary artists and curated historical exhibitions. Sullivan Goss is excited to announce an exhibition of meticulous Pop Realist paintings and prints by three of L.A.’s hottest young artists in the field: Robert Townsend, Dave Lefner and Mary Austin Klein thru January 3rd and, a seasonal selection of exceptional works by the gallery’s regularly represented artists thru January 31st. Sandpiper Golf Club Extraordinary Golf Experiences & Ocean Views!

P

erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of the top 25 public golf courses in the country. Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says Director of Golf, Kyle Oliver. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 60

The “Flying A” STudioS Lights! Camera! Action!

I

t was the Golden Age of moviemaking and Santa Barbara was the center of the celluloid universe. From its humble beginnings in 1910 as the location for early Western thrillers, Santa Barbara quickly became the moviemaking capital of the world and the location for over 1,200 major motion pictures that were produced from 1910 to 1921. In 1913, the American Film Company converted an ostrich farm on the corner of State and Islay Streets into a movie lot and began construction of the world’s largest movie studio on the property bordered by Mission, State, Padre and Chapala Streets which was commonly referred to as the “big glass studio” by the local population. For the next 8 years, up to 14 production companies simultaneously used the “Flying A” facilities to create many of the most popular films of the period and stars like Marion Davies, Lottie Pickford and Wallace Reid kept suites in the Edgerly Arms Apartment 62 62

Hotel on Sola Street which was built to accommodate the burgeoning motion picture industry during the years when famous directors like D.W. Griffith and William Desmond Taylor deposited $1500 weekly paychecks in local State Street banks and entertained the rich and famous from around the world. By 1921, motion picture audiences favored films with themes that focused on life in the big city and the “Flying A” studios were moved south to Hollywood to be closer to the urban backgrounds that became the most common setting for the next era of movie-making. Ironically, the same contractor who poured the concrete for the “big glass studio” in 1913 won the contract to demolish the facilities in 1948 leaving the office building at 2012 Chapala Street which was D.W. Griffith’s private garage and the buildings at the corner of Mission and Chapala Streets that housed the “Green Room” where thousands of actors rehearsed their lines and the private dressing rooms of the first superstars of the American screen. Some remain among the few architectural reminders of Santa Barbara’s place in the history of the motion picture industry. Today, Santa Barbara’s favorable yearround climate and lush, tropical terrain bordered by mountains and ocean attracts film-makers, television producers and fashion photographers to the hundreds of historic settings that blend the architecture of the city’s past and present into idyllic, eclectic locations.
