The Santa Barbara International Orchid Show celebrates its 67th consecutive year of bringing the exotic world of orchids to the public.

Orchids range in size from a miniscule three or four millimeters to types of vanilla—yes, vanilla is an orchid—with lianas reaching 20 meters or more. They can be found in the ground or perched on rocks or trees in habitats from tropical jungles to the Arctic Circle and the islands south of Australia. From the sublime to the bizarre, the orchid family has them all! The perfect place to view a kaleidoscope of orchid colors, shapes and sizes is at the 67th Santa Barbara International Orchid Show, held on March 16, 17 and 18, 2012 at Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara International Orchid Show is the crowning jewel of orchid show season, reflecting Santa Barbara County’s rich history of orchid growing and breeding. This year’s theme, “Orchidelic,” celebrates the joyous and vibrant diversity of the fabulous world of orchid flowers. Exotic and fascinating orchid blooms will be on display in exciting garden exhibits and innovative floral arrangements by top local, regional and international growers, including 18
exhibitors from China and South America. A juried art exhibition and sale allows visitors to view orchids via the creative expression of fine art and photography. World C lass W hale Watching Santa Barbara Channel Named Best Whale Watching by Discovery Channel
R
ecently featured on Discovery Channel as the world’s best whale watching area, the Santa Barbara Channel abounds with migrating gray whales in the winter and early spring, and the giant blue and humpback whales in the summer months. The Santa Barbara Channel is recognized as one of the world’s prime areas for whale watching. The unique East-West configuration of the channel and the converging ocean currents in the area provide ideal conditions during the summer months for the blooming of large quantities of krill, the favored food for blue and humpback whales...and Santa Barbara lies right on the path of the migrating California gray whales, making Santa Barbara one of the favored viewing spots on the West Coast. The charter boat CONDOR Express, in conjunction with museums around the world, offers whale watching trips throughout the various whale seasons to carry whale watchers, researchers and TV and film crews into the channel to experience these remarkable animals. The California Gray whales, which now number over 25,000 animals (they are now back to their pre-whaling population), migrate past the channel islands in December, January and February as they move southward toward their calving and mating grounds in Baja. From mid February through the end of April, the herd travels with the newborn calves close by Santa Barbara as they return to their feeding grounds in Alaska...completing a phenomenal 12,000 mile migration. Blue and humpback whales are regular visitors to channel waters, with pods of animals 28
being sighted during summer and fall months. From May through October, blues and/or humpbacks are sighted in the waters surrounding Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands... and during the busiest times they are joined by fin and minke whales, so that it often is possible to see all four species of whales feeding in the same area at the same time. Such a biodiversity in regards the great whales is seldom seen outside of the nutrient rich waters of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The blue whale is the largest animal ever to be on the face of the earth. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing 100 tons or more, blue whales are larger by far than the largest of the dinosaurs and immensely larger than anything on earth today. The largest land animal is the elephant, weighting about 6 tons. The tongue of the blue whale is larger than an elephant...in fact, a blue whale is about as massive as a whole herd of elephants. Santa Barbara’s Finest On The Beach
erched atop the sand on secluded and beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach, better known as Hendry’s to locals, sits one of Santa Barbara’s newest and most exiting restaurants. The Boathouse at Hendry’s, Brought to us by the same family who started the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co and Santa Barbara FisHouse is truly a feast for all the senses. In the mornings, you can dine on the expansive patio and watch the sun rise over the coatal range to the east. In the evenings, gorgeous shades of red, orange and purple from the sunset to the west, flood the entire restaurant. The Boathouse at Hendry’s also offers an excellent escape without ever leaving town, one is struck with the sense they have been transported to a remote and tropical place, while just minutes from downtown. It is difficult to see any signs of development from any part of the Boathouse, with the ocean on one side, the Douglass Preserve on the other and Hope Ranch to the north. Dolphins in the surf just out front seem to be a daily occurance, and in season migrating whales are also common. The best part of the visit however is the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily and the menus feature some of the best executed familiar favorites I’ve seen, as well as many very tasty unique dishes. The signature breakfast is incredible; real Dungeness crab cakes over breakfast potatoes topped with poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise; amazing! Corn beef hash was never tops on my list, but tasting it at the Boathouse nearly qualified as a life changing experience. The serving bordered on gigantic, but in no time it was gone; the best I have ever tasted. Of course all the usual favorites are there, pancakes, waffles, French toast, eggs benedict, thick applewood smoked bacon and eggs etc. I recommend weekdays, or get there early on the weekend. Lunch is a very fun experience at the Boathouse, it’s busy, beautiful and again, delicious. Try the Mahi Salad with mandarins and crispy wontons, or the Shrimp Louie, or the Lobster Tacos. The cioppino is excellent, and the Seared Ahi Club on ciabatta is fantastic, although huge. Fresh fish specials abound and generally two to three oyster varieties can be had. Dinner dresses up nicely at the Boathouse, with the servers donning all black and a quiet elegance complimenting the natural beauty of the place. Stuffy would never be a word to describe the Boathouse, with beachgoers in flip flops as welcome as those in their designer apparel. The food at dinner is quite special. Appetizers such as Giant Mesquite Grilled Prawns on sourdough with scampi butter, Spiced Chicken Cigarillos, and Pan Fried Dungeness Crab Cakes start of a delicious meal, or make a meal in themselves. The mesquite grills beautifully cook many fish delicacies, such as Ahi Tuna, Yellowtail, Arctic Char, Mahi Mahi, White Sea Bass, as well as Newport Beef Ribteyes, Top Sirloins, and New York Steaks, as well as the truly sinful Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with blue cheese compound butter and fried Maui onions. End it with a molten chocolate cake or McConnell’s ice cream mudd pie and you are in heaven. 50 36

erhaps you’ve seen the big colorful boat on wheels cruising the streets of Santa Barbara with passengers smiling on it. And perhaps you’ve wondered, “What is that thing? And where is it going?” Well, it’s eventually going to splash into the sea! That’s right, the 39’ “Land Shark” is one-half bus and onehalf boat, and is the only way to see Santa Barbara by both land and sea. Up to 49 passengers are treated to a 90-minute tour of Santa Barbara’s historical landmarks and rich maritime history, which
is personally narrated in a most humorous and entertaining style. Adults are enthralled with the city’s unique history and architecture, while children can’t wait to splash into the ocean. Suddenly, after 60 minutes of land cruising, the Land Shark reaches the boat-launching ramp and, with an amusing airline-style safety and life jacket demonstration by the tour guide, splashes into the big blue sea. 56
For the next 30 minutes, passengers are now cruising the beautiful harbor and Santa Barbara waterfront, with exquisite views of the city and mountainous backdrop as seen only from a boat. The witty tour guide tells of maritime legends and the colorful history of Stearns Wharf (California’s oldest working wharf ), the Breakwater and the coastal oil platforms. And perhaps even more fun is the citing of numerous marine mammals, such as seals, sea lions, dolphins and local sea birds, who seem unafraid of this “Land Shark.” The comical tour guide now displays his knowledge as a marine naturalist. As the boat climbs back to dry land and returns to its original departure area near State Street and Stearns Wharf, it is not uncommon to hear children ask their parents “Can we do that again?” This fun-filled amphibious adventure is truly one of Santa Barbara’s “Must-Dos.” Land & Sea Tours offers these adventures daily at 12pm & 2pm (and 4pm in summer).
