Welcome to Paradise

O

n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that

4

attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to

a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and worldclass restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of five Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol

Burnett, John Cleese, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia LouisDreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe, Fess Parker, Eva Marie Saint and Jonathan Winters; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield, Barnaby Conrad and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors, Fred Couples, Tommy Curren and Andy Granatelli; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Harold Simmons, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll 5

TEE-OFF RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE Santa Barbara’s Favorite 19th Hole For More Than 50 Years!

T

he Tee-off Restaurant and Lounge has been one of Santa Barbara’s most popular restaurants for over 50 years. The Tee-off opened its doors as a bar in 1956, befitting its name with golf motif. Located on Upper State Street off Las Positas Road in Santa Barbara, the Tee-off was the convenient local watering (19th) hole for golfers at nearby Santa Barbara Golf Course. Soon after, a full menu was added to the Tee-off, featuring prime rib, sirloin, lobster and shrimp. The Tee-off has evolved into a popular American dinner house, offering a comfortable back room for dining while maintaining a festive bar atmosphere. In 1991, John Scott and Dave Perry acquired Tee-off and refurbished the restaurant piece by piece. “Everything was brand new . . . but the same,” explained Scott. “We wanted to keep it traditional.” Tradition defines the Tee-off. The majority of the staff has more than ten years of experience at the restaurant, and many of the customers have been coming to the Tee-off for years. Doors open at the Tee-off every day at 4436

Santa Barbara Area Golf Courses Have Something For Everyone

W

hen it comes to golf, Santa Barbara has something to offer for everyone! The County of Santa Barbara is quickly becoming known as a premier golf destination. With a wonderful portfolio of courses, there is nothing the golfing world can’t find. From a championship golf course ranked among the best in the world to a golf course that is perfect for the beginner. With green fees ranging from $12 to $149 golfers have financial options as well. If golfers desire nine-holes, 18-holes, tournament play, banquet facilities, name brand merchandise, PGA golf instruction, junior clinics, practice facilities, club fitting or a gourmet meal after their round, they can find it here in this diverse golf destination. Sandpiper golf course opened in 1972 and has been known as “one of the best” ever since. It earned this reputation by providing golfers with championship golf on the ocean’s edge. Patrons can literally step off the green of the Par 3, 11th Hole and on to the sand of the scenic Santa Barbara coastline. This stunning combination of championship golf and beauty has inspired awe in its patrons for 35 years. Glen Annie Golf Club, Santa Barbara’s newest golf gem, opened its doors in December of 1997 cementing the area’s reputation as a premier golf destination. This challenging layout is perched in the foothills above Santa Barbara with breathtaking ocean and mountain views. A beautiful clubhouse with its award winning architecture 68 6 0

provides its guests with acclaimed cuisine and looks out onto this magnificent landscape & a cascading lake. Just a half hour up the highway the River Course at the Alisal presents golfers with breathtaking panoramas of the brilliant hues of the foothills and the Santa Ynez Mountains and Valley. This challenging layout follows the meandering path of the Santa Ynez River and features four lakes and a green that is nearly surrounded by water. After a rewarding round of golf, guests can retire to the popular River Grille to enjoy a drink or a wonderful meal. A twenty five minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara will bring you to Rancho San Marcos and golfers can reach La Purisima in less than an hour. Both are critically acclaimed golf courses that feature championship golf with spectacular surroundings and are well worth the trip. With a wide variety of golf courses that will challenge the best golfers, help the beginners, and inspire the view takers, Santa Barbara is a destination that is nothing short of a golfer’s dream!

The “Flying A” Studios Lights! Camera! Action!

I

t was the Golden Age of moviemaking and Santa Barbara was the center of the celluloid universe. From its humble beginnings in 1910 as the location for early Western thrillers, Santa Barbara quickly became the moviemaking capital of the world and the location for over 1,200 major motion pictures that were produced from 1910 to 1921. In 1913, the American Film Company converted an ostrich farm on the corner of State and Islay Streets into a movie lot and began construction of the world’s largest movie studio on the property bordered by Mission, State, Padre and Chapala Streets which was commonly referred to as the “big glass studio” by the local population. For the next 8 years, up to 14 production companies simultaneously used the “Flying A” facilities to create many of the most popular films of the period and stars like Marion Davies, Lottie Pickford and Wallace Reid kept suites in the Edgerly Arms Apartment 62

Hotel on Sola Street which was built to accommodate the burgeoning motion picture industry during the years when famous directors like D.W. Griffith and William Desmond Taylor deposited $1500 weekly paychecks in local State Street banks and entertained the rich and famous from around the world. By 1921, motion picture audiences favored films with themes that focused on life in the big city and the “Flying A” studios were moved south to Hollywood to be closer to the urban backgrounds that became the most common setting for the next era of movie-making. Ironically, the same contractor who poured the concrete for the “big glass studio” in 1913 won the contract to demolish the facilities in 1948 leaving the office building at 2012 Chapala Street which was D.W. Griffith’s private garage and the buildings at the corner of Mission and Chapala Streets that housed the “Green Room” where thousands of actors rehearsed their lines and the private dressing rooms of the first superstars of the American screen. Some remain among the few architectural reminders of Santa Barbara’s place in the history of the motion picture industry. Today, Santa Barbara’s favorable yearround climate and lush, tropical terrain bordered by mountains and ocean attracts film-makers, television producers and fashion photographers to the hundreds of historic settings that blend the architecture of the city’s past and present into idyllic, eclectic locations.
