n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterranean-like abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the 6

sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and world-class restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of six Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe and Eva Marie Saint, singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Milt Larsen, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield, Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors and Tommy Curren; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll

The Best Places to Find the Perfect Gifts!

Holiday shopping in Santa Barbara is a rewarding experience and there’s no greater reward than discovering the eclectic mix of locally owned boutiques, galleries and shops that are some of the best places to find the perfect gifts in paradise on the pacific. We’ll begin at Loreto Plaza at the corner of State and Los Positas streets where you can enjoy a luxurious spa treatment at Qui Si Bella 33 Jewels Eco-Wellness Spa and find quality skin care products, candles, exotic scents and gift certificates for that special person on your list.. From Loreto Plaza, we recommend you travel south on State Street to Downtown Santa Barbara, where you’ll find the area’s highest concentration of retail shopping treasures in the eleven blocks from Sola Street south to Highway 101 with abundant public parking off Chapala and Anacapa streets and open-air trolleys, electric shuttle buses and pedi-cabs available to help you navigate the most beautiful downtown on the California coast. As you enter the downtown area, be sure to visit Natasha, the contemporary women’s clothing boutique in Victoria Court at 1231 State Street that specializes in easy care, easy wear casual clothing in natural fabrics made in California as well as the area’s largest selection of Citron and Cutloose apparel and a wide selection of accessories, shoes, bags, jewelry and hats. And since you’re just across the street from the box office at the beautifully restored Granada Theatre at 1214 State Street, may we suggest that tickets to the State Street Ballet’s December 20th or 21st performances of The Nutcracker with a full orchestra or the Santa Barbara Symphony’s New Years Eve Pops Concert, the best New Year’s Eve celebration on the coast with nationally acclaimed Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt directing the perfect mix of your favorite tunes from Broadway, stage, movies and more would make memorable holiday gifts. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art Store at 1130 State Street on the lower level of the SBMA in downtown area’s charming cultural district offers a variety of merchandise unique to the Museum of Art’s permanent collection and special exhibitions, including the area’s finest selection of art books, music and dvds. You’ll find distinctive art objects, jewelry and apparel by local The Yes Store (Continued on page 18)

opal restaurant & bar A Santa Barbara Favorite for 29 Years

A

local favorite for 29 years, opal restaurant & bar thrives on the creative contrast between exciting innovation and comfortable tradition. As son as you step inside, you know you are in for a special experience. Sophisticated yet comfortable, opal restaurant & bar radiates a warm, friendly ambience combining the elegance of a trendy San Francisco bistro with a genuine hospitality that seems to come naturally to their well-trained staff of servers and chefs. From your first glance at the menu, it’s easy to see why opal is such a favorite, featuring eclectic California cuisine inspired by dishes from around the world and the multicultural heritage of America. Offering everything from an Herb Grilled 14 oz Ribeye Steak, to spicy authentic Paella, fresh seafood, homemade pastas & soups, deliciously imaginative salads, elegant Asian-accented appetizers, and homemade desserts, opal’s menu truly has something for every taste. If you are a wine lover, you are in for a treat at opal restaurant & bar. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence every year since 1993, their extensive wine list features a hand-selected mix of French, Italian, Australian, Spanish and California wines, with new wines added weekly. With its full bar and unique Martini specialties, opal is also a great place to drop in for a drink and an appetizer before a movie or a night on the town. If you need a private space for your group, opal has a separate, attractively decorated, banquet room that adjoins the main dining room, with its own sound system, kitchen and separate entrance. The philosophy of proprietors Tina Takaya and Richard Yates is simple, “People are hungry for more than just great food. We seek to create an experience that removes barriers and creates a connection between people; one that ultimately nurtures the soul as well.” With its warm and welcoming style, delicious and diverse menu, excellent wine list and full bar, all at reasonable prices, this is the kind of restaurant you can go back to again and again. And when you do, don’t be surprised if you recognize the folks at the table next to you. Chances are, the same thing happened to them! opal restaurant & bar is located at 1325 State Street near the Arlington Theatre. (805) 966-9676.

SANDPIPER GOLF CLUB

Extraordinary Golf Experiences & Ocean Views!!

P

erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of American’s top 75 upscale golf courses. Sandpiper was included in the 2011 Top 40 Golf Courses in the State of California – Golf Digest

Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says General Manager & Director of Golf, D.J. Limardi. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 60 60

Solvang - A Little Taste of Denmark in Our Own Backyard!

O

ver 200 years ago, a group of Danish educators from the Midwest ventured west and developed a village that is, today, one of the principal tourist destinations in the country. Located inland, along the Central California Coast, 45 miles north of Santa Barbara, this village of 5,300 represents a page from a Hans Christian Andersen story. The authenticity of Solvang’s Danish architecture features simulated thatch & gleaming copper roofs, attractive dormers, stained glass windows and patches of cobblestone sidewalks. Dane’s believe a stork on your roof will bring good luck - evident by the array of artificial storks that grace the chimneys and rooflines of many of the homes and buildings. It is also a town of flags. Shops, businesses and homes proudly display the Stars & Stripes as well as the red & white Dannebrog, the world’s oldest flag. Solvang is home to two museums one of which is the Elverhoj Museum, housed in a replica of a Danish farmhouse and devoted to the cultural heritage of Solvang. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum, located downtown, features a large collection of the author’s books and displays on the life, art & love of Denmark’s most famous and beloved author. 62 62

Tours of the town are provided daily in the spring, summer and fall and weekends in the winter via Honen (“The Hen”), a replica of a Copenhagen street car of the early 1900’s and powered by a pair of massive Belgian horses. You won’t want to miss Danish Days in September – celebrated with traditions passed down from generations. Huge Danish & American flags line the flower-lined streets and residents proudly wear colorful native costumes. Join in the dancing singing lively entertainment and authentic delicious food. Among the myriad of Danish bakeries and smorgasbord cuisine, there are more than 150 one-of-a-kind boutiques featuring antiques & collectibles, crafted Danish imports, furnishings, gourmet gifts, toy stores, art galleries, clothing & shoe boutiques as well as wineries & wine-tasting rooms. Solvang means “Sunny Field” and indeed you will agree as this pedestrian friendly village boasts year round temperate weather, sunny skies & warm, friendly hospitality. Visit www.solvangusa.com for further information on what Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley have to offer.
