n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today 6
one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that
surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and worldclass restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries.
This is the home of five Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe, Eva Marie Saint and Steve Martin; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Milt Larsen, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors, Fred Couples, Tommy Curren, Chuck Liddell and Andy Granatelli; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Harold Simmons, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll 7

Our holiday shopping adventure concludes in the Lower Village, where we suggest you visit the elegant Montecito Inn that was built in 1928 by the legendary Charlie Chaplin on the corner of San Ysidro Road and Coast Village Road before you explore the mix of high fashion and casual beach elegance with luxe collections of jewelry, knitwear, denim, swimwear, separates and handbags at Angel at 1221 Coast Village Road, the younger and more hip of the four Wendy Foster stores that showcases cutting-edge collections from designers like Joie, Nightcap and MK2K. With an inventory of over 3,000 works, including paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints and sculptures, Sullivan Goss is the primary West Coast gallery positioned to help build private and public collections of important American art. The gallery is constantly seeking to acquire works by significant American painters and sculptors who worked between 1850 and 1950 including those artists referred to as luminists, impressionists, expressionists and modernists. The downtown location offers approximately twenty exhibitions each year, including solo shows for contemporary artists and curated historical exhibitions including a summer exhibition of American painting centered on the images of that beloved group known as The Impressionists through September 1, 2013. Stretching from Bradford and Bierstadt to Marsh and Sample, The Summer Impressionists will dazzle in its variety and quality. The gallery, through its research efforts, is also involved with scholarship and research for American artists. Extraordinary Golf Experiences & Ocean Views!!
P
erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of American’s top 75 upscale golf courses. Sandpiper was included in the 2011 Top 40 Golf Courses in the State of California – Golf Digest
Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says General Manager & Director of Golf, D.J. Limardi. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 60 60

The “Flying A” STudioS Lights! Camera! Action!
I
t was the Golden Age of moviemaking and Santa Barbara was the center of the celluloid universe. From its humble beginnings in 1910 as the location for early Western thrillers, Santa Barbara quickly became the moviemaking capital of the world and the location for over 1,200 major motion pictures that were produced from 1910 to 1921. In 1913, the American Film Company converted an ostrich farm on the corner of State and Islay Streets into a movie lot and began construction of the world’s largest movie studio on the property bordered by Mission, State, Padre and Chapala Streets which was commonly referred to as the “big glass studio” by the local population. For the next 8 years, up to 14 production companies simultaneously used the “Flying A” facilities to create many of the most popular films of the period and stars like Marion Davies, Lottie Pickford and Wallace Reid kept suites in the Edgerly Arms Apartment 62
Hotel on Sola Street which was built to accommodate the burgeoning motion picture industry during the years when famous directors like D.W. Griffith and William Desmond Taylor deposited $1500 weekly paychecks in local State Street banks and entertained the rich and famous from around the world. By 1921, motion picture audiences favored films with themes that focused on life in the big city and the “Flying A” studios were moved south to Hollywood to be closer to the urban backgrounds that became the most common setting for the next era of movie-making. Ironically, the same contractor who poured the concrete for the “big glass studio” in 1913 won the contract to demolish the facilities in 1948 leaving the office building at 2012 Chapala Street which was D.W. Griffith’s private garage and the buildings at the corner of Mission and Chapala Streets that housed the “Green Room” where thousands of actors rehearsed their lines and the private dressing rooms of the first superstars of the American screen. Some remain among the few architectural reminders of Santa Barbara’s place in the history of the motion picture industry. Today, Santa Barbara’s favorable yearround climate and lush, tropical terrain bordered by mountains and ocean attracts film-makers, television producers and fashion photographers to the hundreds of historic settings that blend the architecture of the city’s past and present into idyllic, eclectic locations.
