n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterranean-like abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the 6

sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and world-class restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of six Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe and Eva Marie Saint; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Milt Larsen, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield, Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors and Tommy Curren; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll

The Miracle of the Golden Pearls Let the Pearl Guide You to Oliver & Espig

G

lenn Espig, the owner of Oliver & Espig Gallery, and Marcia Ribeiro, the manager, have just returned from an amazing trip to the Palawan Islands in the Philippines. They were invited to get an immersive look into the creation of rare South Sea Cultured Golden Pearls. “When you think of where the pearls are growing, the beauty of the environment around them, and the care and love of the people involved in making the miracle possible, then you get a better understanding of what the golden pearls are all about,” says Marcia. Upon seeing the breathtaking color of ocean surrounding the beautiful Philippine islands, Glenn, one of the largest collectors of the rare Paraiba Tourmaline gemstone, realized that the Golden Pearl is Nature’s “Paraiba of the Sea.” Golden Pearls grow from the rare gold-lipped Pinctada Maxima oysters, sustainably farmed in the warm tropical waters off the coast of the Philippines. The trip consisted of ecotourism, pearl farm visitations, and the opportunity to witness the birth of a pearl. From the breeding of an oyster to the moment of birth, five years go by while that oyster is in what is called, “the spa of the sea.” Perhaps it is the special nurturing and care given to the pearls while growing that produces the inner energy that seems to radiate from each gem creation. The rarity of these gems do not allow for mass production. Each luxurious piece is created by hand selecting and painstakingly matching the radiant pearls from what has been carefully and mindfully harvested. Certain pearl necklace strands have been known to take up to ten years to create due to the process of meticulously matching each high-lustered, deeply golden pearl. Every piece of jewelry is a stunning work of art and a masterful creation revealing Nature’s perfection. Let the pearl guide you to Oliver & Espig Gallery. Hear the wondrous stories of their creation. See, touch and feel the energy and brilliance of the many Golden Pearl jewelry pieces available. Come and experience the miracle of the golden pearl! 13

Wendy Foster Fashion, Santa Barbara, and More

F

ifty years ago, Architect Pierre Lafond started a wine and spirits store at 516 San Ysidro Road in Montecito, the Plaza del Sol. With his laser-like sense of direction and style, the store started branching out. In 1974 he met and married Wendy Foster. Together a wonderful partnership was formed. Wendy concentrated on the clothing and Pierre on the food, wine and home. Wendy now has 5 clothing stores, 3 in Montecito, including Angel, 1 downtown at Canon Perdido and State, and now a store in Los Olivos. Wendy travels to Paris to do much of her buying, bringing collections of the European culture back for local fashion lovers to cherish. She recently commented on her unique recipe for successful buying. “Because of my traveling and interests, I don’t just rely on going to the fashion trade shows. I don’t just sit back and pick things from what’s being presented to me. I’m proactive I may see someone on the street and run after her to ask when Wendy Foster she got her clothes. I’m always aware of what’s going on around me, what people look like and what’s coming soon.” Each clothing store also has its own buyer therefore a different identity and individuality but with the Wendy Foster touch. All of the buyers worked with Wendy for some time before they became buyers. Wendy was born to do this work. It has consumed her, and she has put her DNA into Santa Barbara Style, and its way of thinking of the clothes they wear. Shelley Koury has worked for years making a fabulously successful “destination”, artisinal shop “Upstairs” in The Plaza del Sol, Montecito, which is now entirely run by Wendy and Pierre, including the great new Wine Bistro. Taste California’s fresh bounty in every dish. Wendy and her husband Pierre Lafond also own the Pierre LaFond Wine Bistro at 516 San Ysidro Road in Montecito, the Santa Barbara Winery at 202 Anacapa Street in Santa Barbara and Lafond Winery in Buellton. 14

JadeNow Gallery

Behold the Dawning of the New World Jade Culture

O

pened in 2014, JadeNow Gallery was founded by long time Jade hunter and carver Jeff “Jade Spangler. From the moment you enter the light, open, airy space it is clear that the Jade and gemstone jewelry, sculptures, and visionary paintings housed within tell an enduring story of evolving cultural consciousness. JadeNow Gallery is making a grand effort to re-orient the western world to an Earth Centric point of view. This is nowhere better represented than in the Old Jade Cultures that used Jade and Art as a way to express this connection with the natural world.

Old World Meets New Western contemporary Jade carvers, largely inspired by the ancient cultures of China, the Maya, and the Maori, have rekindled the art form that has largely been forgotten. The modern western Jade Masters bring to JadeNow Gallery ideas and Jade from all over the planet. In the last two years Western Jade Carvers have had the unprecedented honor of being invited to compete in the Suzhou National Jade Exhibition in China. Of the eleven invited, seven were JadeNow Gallery carvers, who won five gold awards and two silver. This year in the spirit of 20

growth, inspiration, and exchange, the Chinese are extending the invitation to thirty world carvers. JADE’S time is ancient and NOW! Ancient Tools in a New World The incredibly bound together structure of Jade made it the toolmakers choice and the Swiss Army Knife of the Stone Age. Jade’s inherent beauty allowed it to evolve on a path of Tools to Jewels, our two most precious belongings. This is the original HEART STONE. As long as we have hunted for a better way, Jade has been the choice, and has been taken to the grave more often than any other prized possession. Jade’s enduring value For eons Jade’s supreme utility, beauty, and enduring reverence has made it the prime choice for the ceremonial gift in all cultures that have been graced with the knowledge that Jade is as forever as it gets on this planet, making it the ideal stone of choice for weddings. Jade’s longstanding traditional value, which eclipses gold or diamonds, is skyrocketing and has increased about 600% over the last couple of years. The rush is on, economically and culturally. This is largely driven by the oldest Jade culture--China. The Chinese have known for many thousands of years that Jade is a finite resource and that the best discoveries go fast, causing its value to increase consistently rather than fluctuate like the price of gold and other commodities. Plus, the spiritual component to the reverence of Jade ensures an endearing value for the “Stone of Heavenâ€? and all the priceless Art and artifacts made from it. Discover the New World Jade Culture for yourself in this ongoing exposition of all that is Jade‌..Now! Find us at 14 Parker Way in Downtown Santa Barbara!

waterfront guide THE SANTA BARBARA CITY WATERFRONT Where you can shop, dine & play all day!

T

here’s something for everyone at the Santa Barbara City Waterfront, the breathtaking span of palm-lined beaches along Cabrillo Boulevard that border the world-famous Stearns Wharf and California’s oldest – and most beautiful working harbor. The Waterfront is blessed with three picturesque, golden sand beaches. East Beach, at 1440 Cabrillo Blvd., offers picnic facilities, more than a dozen volleyball courts on the beach, and a full service restaurant. The Cabrillo Pavilion Bathhouse, built in 1927, offers showers, lockers, a weight room, beach wheelchair and volleyball rental. West Beach between Stearns Wharf and the harbor offers a picturesque sandy area for sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, wind surfing and beach volleyball on eleven acres adjoined by the wide palm tree lined walkway and bike path. The family-friendly Leadbetter Beach between the harbor and Shoreline Park offers grassy picnic and barbecue sites and attracts windsurfers, catamaran pilots, surfers and walkers. We recommend that you begin your waterfront adventure with a visit to the Santa Barbara Region of Commerce Visitor, open daily at the corner of Cabrillo Blvd and Garden Streets, where you can make reservations at hotels and restaurants and get directions and information about the area’s attractions and visitor-serving businesses. The Waterfront offers a variety of ocean-going activities like coastal cruises, sailing, whale watching, fishing, kayaking, surfing and parasailing. And for those who prefer spend more time on land, the amphibious Land Shark operated by Land & Sea Tours departs from State Street at Stearns Wharf at 12PM, 2PM and 4PM daily for a 90-minute fun-filled, narrated tour of historical landmarks that includes a cruise around the harbor and waterfront. The Santa Barbara Zoo, just off Cabrillo Blvd at East Beach, is home to 160 species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects on its 30 hilltop acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On Sundays, up to 200 resident artists display their original works under the palms along Cabrillo Blvd at the Arts & Crafts Show that is the only continuous, non-juried arts festival of drawings, paintings, graphics, sculpture, crafts and photography in the world. The historic Stearns Wharf – the longest and oldest working wooden wharf in California- is the most popular visitor attraction in the Santa Barbara area. Built in 1872 (Continued on page 32)

New at the Zoo

Giraffe Calves, Anteater Pup & Golden Lion Tamarins

T

he Santa Barbara Zoo’s herd of Masai giraffes now numbers five, thanks to the joyous arrival of two calves – Asha (“life” in Swahili) on March 15, and Buttercup born in November 2014. “There are just over one hundred Masai giraffes in captivity in North America, so each birth and each giraffe is very important,” said Sheri Horiszny, Director of Animal Care. “I’m very proud of our sire Michael, as his genetics greatly help the diversity of our Masai population.” The little ones are still nursing, but guests can feed Michael and the other adult giraffes at the Giraffe Deck, open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A portion of the $5 cost goes towards conservation of Masai giraffes in Kenya and Tanzania. Though they are growing fast, the twin golden lion tamarins were about the size of C batteries when born in March. This species of tiny, bright orange monkeys are highly endangered in their native range in the Brazilian rainforests. Their little faces are ringed with fur, making them resemble lions, thus the name. The young cling to their parents’ backs for the first months of life. The tamarin family is on view in their enclosure near the Zoo Train station. Young giant anteaters also ride on their mother’s backs, but the pup born at the Zoo last November is getting too big to do so. His mother, Anara, is good-naturedly kicking him off, but he’s persistent. When young, the stripes on giant anteaters line up with those of its mother, helping to camouflage them from predators. See mom and the pup at their exhibit not far from the tamarin enclosure. Other species at the Zoo span the globe: Asian elephants, African lions, Humboldt penguins, California condors, Western lowland gorillas, Channel Island foxes, and Amur leopards, among many others. The Santa Barbara Zoo is the region’s most popular attraction, and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.sbzoo.org. 36

The Whales Of Summer ... are in the Santa Barbara Channel!

T

he Santa Barbara Channel is known as one of the best whale watching areas in the world. Giant blue whales, playful humpback whales, plus fin and minke whales, dolphins and porpoises … all are in the nutrient rich waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Over 27 different types of whales and dolphins inhabit these waters throughout the year, making this channel one of the best whale watching areas in the world.

The undisputed star of this show is the giant blue whale. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing over 150 tons, the blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on earth … by a long shot. To put it in perspective, consider that the largest land animal, the African elephant, can attain a weight of about 7 1/2 tons … the tongue of the blue whale is larger than an African elephant. With a heart as big as a Volkswagen they are truly immense animals. Blue whales show up in the channel about mid-May and can be seen through about mid-September. For pure showmanship, however, nothing beats the friendly and active humpback whales. These magnificent

38

creatures have been delighting people from all over the world with their antics – breaching, lob tailing, slapping their pectoral fins on the water and just plain mugging boats full of eager whale watchers. They often come right to the boat and play to the people – enjoying a little people watching of their own. Humpback whales are in the channel year ‘round but are plentiful May through August. Both the Blues and Humpbacks can be seen on the Condor Express’s whale watching trips, which depart daily from Sea Landing in the Santa Barbara Harbor. At any time of year, dolphins and porpoises can be sighted on the channel crossing, and sometimes we even experience the exciting Orca, or killer whale! The premier charter boat in this area, the Condor Express is powered by four 740hp diesel engines driving water jets, making the crossing to the islands in less than an hour as opposed to 3-5 hours for other boats. They provide qualified naturalists on all voyages, a galley serving hot and cold meals, even a full cocktail bar – definitely the most comfortable way to get out to see the whales! The Condor Express runs half-day Island Whale watching trips daily, and on all trips whale sightings are guaranteed! Fares are: $99 adults, $50 children 5-12 years, children under 5 free. For reservations, call (805) 882-0088 or toll free 1-888-77WHALE.

SANDPIPER GOLF CLUB

Extraordinary Golf Experiences & Ocean Views!!

P

erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of American’s top 75 upscale golf courses. Sandpiper was included in the 2011 Top 40 Golf Courses in the State of California – Golf Digest

Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says General Manager & Director of Golf, D.J. Limardi. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 60 660 0

Santa Barbara Winery World Class Varietal Wines

P

ierre Lafond has played a pioneering role in the history of Santa Barbara County’s wine industry since 1962 when he opened Santa Barbara Winery-the first post-prohibition commercial winery in the region. The visionary vintner has been producing top-quality wines ever since. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted in 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996, 30 additional acres were added. The wines under the Santa Barbara Winery label range from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to lesser known but memorable varietals. Sea breeze and sun complement a charming patio setting at the Santa Barbara Winery tasting room--located just two blocks from the Pacific Ocean in downtownSanta Barbara--a site that doubles as a production (all their wines are bottled there) and storage facility. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The small-lot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. It has become renowned for its single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Visitors to Lafond Winery & Vineyards in Buellton can enjoy the picnic area under the trees, where rustic tables overlook the vineyards, or relax on the patio that can accommodate small groups of up to 50 people. The spacious tasting room, with a view of the vineyard and working winery, invites lingering. The Lafond Winery bottlings are also poured at the Lafond City Tasting Room that was opened in 2014 next to the Santa Barbara Winery Tasting Room in Santa Barbara’s popular Funk Zone. Santa Barbara Winery and Lafond Winery are also available for private celebrations and events.
