O

n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterranean-like abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the 6

sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and world-class restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of five Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe and Eva Marie Saint, singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Milt Larsen, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield, Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors and Tommy Curren; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll

Santa Barbara Leads in the New Jade Rush With First Gallery by Jeff “Jade” Spangler he Jade Rush is on as the world Jade market skyrockets in value. The newly affluent Chinese race to buy back their heritage denied by the communist revolution. They are investing in all forms of Jade, their most prized immortal “Stone of Heaven”. The Chinese intend to own all the worlds best Jade, old, new, and rough. This has spawned new prospecting, and more Jade art. Santa Barbara is the natal city for JadeNow Gallery with a focus on master contemporary Jade carvers of the new world. For the first time a gallery is devoted to the awakening of the ancient art of Jade carving by living artists. These exceptional innovative leaders in their art have been long overshadowed by the rich ancient Asian Jade Donn Salt, White Dragon carving tradition. Our modern carvers in one generation have seen more blossoming of styles than has happened in the last thousand years. With access to all the worlds Jades and cultural cross inspiration, JadeNow artists are able to set the pace and style in the new Jade Rush. For the first time a western Jade carver, JadeNow’s esteemed NZ artist Donn Salt, was invited to compete in the 2013 National Jade Carving Competition in China; out of 300 entries Donn took second place, for most innovative design, an amazing first. This has led to the invitation of eight western entries for this year, four of which are JadeNow Artists. Donn Salt, and other JadeNow Carvers will be offering workshops this year in the art of Jade Carving at JadeNow’s funk zone studio. Join Maile Ellington, Coelho Greens them to ride the new wave of Jade as it takes it’s long lost place in the heart of western culture. waterfront guide THE SANTA BARBARA CITY WATERFRONT Where you can shop, dine & play all day!

T

here’s something for everyone at the Santa Barbara City Waterfront, the breathtaking span of palm-lined beaches along Cabrillo Boulevard that border the world-famous Stearns Wharf and California’s oldest – and most beautiful - working harbor. The Waterfront is blessed with three picturesque, golden sand beaches. East Beach, at 1440 Cabrillo Blvd., offers picnic facilities, more than a dozen volleyball courts on the beach, and a full service restaurant. The Cabrillo Pavilion Bathhouse, built in 1927, offers showers, lockers, a weight room, beach wheelchair and volleyball rental. West Beach between Stearns Wharf and the harbor offers a picturesque sandy area for sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, wind surfing and beach volleyball on eleven acres adjoined by the wide palm tree lined walkway and bike path. The family-friendly Leadbetter Beach between the harbor and Shoreline Park offers grassy picnic and barbecue sites and attracts windsurfers, catamaran pilots, surfers and walkers. We recommend that you begin your waterfront adventure with a visit to the Santa Barbara Region of Commerce Visitor, open daily at the corner of Cabrillo Blvd and Garden Streets, where you can make reservations at hotels and restaurants and get directions and information about the area’s attractions and visitor-serving businesses. The Waterfront offers a variety of ocean-going activities like coastal cruises, sailing, whale watching, fishing, kayaking, surfing and parasailing. And for those who prefer spend more time on land, the amphibious Land Shark operated by Land & Sea Tours departs from State Street at Stearns Wharf at 12PM, 2PM and 4PM daily for a 90-minute fun-filled, narrated tour of historical landmarks that includes a cruise around the harbor and waterfront. The Santa Barbara Zoo, just off Cabrillo Blvd at East Beach, is home to 160 species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects on its 30 hilltop acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On Sundays, up to 200 resident artists display their original works under the palms along Cabrillo Blvd at the Arts & Crafts Show that is the only continuous, non-juried arts festival of drawings, paintings, graphics, sculpture, crafts and photography in the world. The historic Stearns Wharf – the longest and oldest working wooden wharf in California- is the most popular visitor attraction in the Santa Barbara area. Built in 1872 by local lumberman J.P. Stearns to unload logging ships on what had just become the longest deep-water pier between Los Angeles and San Francisco, (Continued on page 28)

Santa BarBara Zoo

Where Lions Have an Ocean View By Julia McHugh here the Santa Barbara Zoo now stands was once a grand hilltop estate that boasted sweeping views: beaches and islands, waterfront and harbor, mountains and lagoon, red-tiled roofs and palm trees. Today, Zoo visitors still enjoy the panorama, but now wild animals are not only on view – they often have a view. As Zoo Director Nancy McToldridge jokes, “we are the only zoo in the world where the lions can see beach volleyball!” The Zoo holds four African lions: an elderly pair named Gingerbread and Chadwick; and two young sisters named Kadi and Neema. The two pairs of felines alternate in the Cats of Africa exhibit, which features a waterfall and large rockwork where the cats sun themselves. Two wee fennec foxes are also new arrivals and are housed near the lion exhibit’s entrance. Native to the African desert, these are the world’s smallest foxes and have distinctively large ears, to hear prey and to dissipate heat. Next door, Masai giraffes gracefully stroll up to the Feeding Deck to munch on lettuce leaves fed to them by excited Zoo guests. At 16-feet tall, Masais are the largest giraffe species -- they can be seen from cars driving on the adjacent Cabrillo Boulevard. Many plants nearby, like the many flowering proteas, are also African. “Santa Barbara has a climate similar to the South African Transvaal,” says McToldridge.

W

32

Slender tailed meerkats, desert dwellers, dig and cavort in a sandy exhibit not far from a massive Dragon Tree planted by the original estate owners. “A happy coincidence,” notes McToldridge. Following a path around the hilltop, guests are shaded by tall palms of many varieties before arriving at “The Forest’s Edge,” home to two Western lowland gorillas. Half-brothers Kivu and Goma arrived in 1997 as youngsters and have grown into magnificent adult silverbacks. Keepers hide fruit and vegetables among the lush plantings, to mimic how apes “browse” for food in the wild. Guests can observe them from an outdoor overlook or through glass from an inside viewing area. These are just the African animals – there is much more to see among the Zoo’s 30-acres. California Trails, also on the hilltop, features highly endangered California condors and other threatened or endangered creatures from the Golden State. What do the condors see from their hillside aviary? The Santa Ynez Mountains, part of their historic range. Not a bad view. The Santa Barbara Zoo, 500 Ninos Drive, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The region’s most popular destination, it features more than 400 animals from 160 species, plus the Zoo Train, a 26-foot climbing wall, children’s play area and garden, and a live show featuring (sort of) live dinosaurs. Visit www.sbzoo.org.

the whaleS of Summer ... are in the Santa Barbara Channel!

T

he Santa Barbara Channel is known as one of the best whale watching areas in the world. Giant blue whales, playful humpback whales, plus fin and minke whales, dolphins and porpoises … all are in the nutrient rich waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Over 27 different types of whales and dolphins inhabit these waters throughout the year, making this channel one of the best whale watching areas in the world.

The undisputed star of this show is the giant blue whale. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing over 150 tons, the blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on earth … by a long shot. To put it in perspective, consider that the largest land animal, the African elephant, can attain a weight of about 7 1/2 tons … the tongue of the blue whale is larger than an African elephant. With a heart as big as a Volkswagen they are truly immense animals. Blue whales show up in the channel about mid-May and can be seen through about mid-September. For pure showmanship, however, nothing beats the friendly and active humpback whales. These magnificent 34

creatures have been delighting people from all over the world with their antics – breaching, lob tailing, slapping their pectoral fins on the water and just plain mugging boats full of eager whale watchers. They often come right to the boat and play to the people – enjoying a little people watching of their own. Humpback whales are in the channel year ‘round but are plentiful May through August. Both the Blues and Humpbacks can be seen on the Condor Express’s whale watching trips, which depart daily from Sea Landing in the Santa Barbara Harbor. At any time of year, dolphins and porpoises can be sighted on the channel crossing, and sometimes we even experience the exciting Orca, or killer whale! The premier charter boat in this area, the Condor Express is powered by four 740hp diesel engines driving water jets, making the crossing to the islands in less than an hour as opposed to 3-5 hours for other boats. They provide qualified naturalists on all voyages, a galley serving hot and cold meals, even a full cocktail bar – definitely the most comfortable way to get out to see the whales! The Condor Express runs half-day Island Whale watching trips daily, and on all trips whale sightings are guaranteed! Fares are: $99 adults, $50 children 5-12 years, children under 5 free. For reservations, call (805) 882-0088 or toll free 1-888-77WHALE.

Extraordinary Golf Experiences & Ocean Views!!

erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of American’s top 75 upscale golf courses. Sandpiper was included in the 2011 Top 40 Golf Courses in the State of California – Golf Digest

Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says General Manager & Director of Golf, D.J. Limardi. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 60 60

World Class Varietal Wines

ierre Lafond has played a pioneering role in the history of Santa Barbara County’s wine industry since 1962 when he opened Santa Barbara Winery--the first post-prohibition commercial winery in the region. The visionary vintner has been producing top-quality wines ever since. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted in 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996, 30 additional acres were added. The wines under the Santa Barbara Winery label range from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to lesser known but memorable varietals. Sea breeze and sun complement a charming patio setting at the Santa Barbara Winery tasting room--located just two blocks from the Pacific Ocean in downtown Santa Barbara--a site that doubles as a production (all their wines are bottled there) and storage facility. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The small-lot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. It has become renowned for its single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Visitors to Lafond Winery can enjoy the picnic area under the trees, where rustic tables overlook the vineyards, or relax on the newly installed patio that can accommodate small groups of up to 50 people. The spacious tasting room, with a view of the vineyard and working winery, invites lingering. Santa Barbara Winery and Lafond Winery are also available for private celebrations and events. Santa Barbara Winery, 202 Anacapa Street, call (805) 963-3633 for hours & information. 62
