Welcome to Paradise

O

n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that

6

attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles,

332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, awardwinning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and worldclass restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of five Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger

and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, John Cleese, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe, Fess Parker, Eva Marie Saint and Jonathan Winters; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; bestselling authors Jack Canfield, Barnaby Conrad and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors, Fred Couples, Tommy Curren and Andy Granatelli; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Harold Simmons, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll 7

Wendy Foster Santa Barbara’s Fashion Icon

B

orn in New York, Wendy Foster grew up in Santa Barbara, spending her summer vacations at her mother’s home in Massachusetts. She always had an independent streak and ended up leaving home at age 17, not returning home until her late twenties. She attended college in Mexico, Massachusetts and Paris. During this period of time she really got the travel bug and decided to get more education by traveling the world. And she did just that, for 10 years all by herself. When she first decided to open a store she looked in her own closet and drawers and counted the number of items in each category, skirts, blouses, t-shirts, pants, jackets etc. She quickly realized the appropriate proportions and purchased her merchandise for her store based on her own personal assessment of her wardrobe. Three tops to every bottom and it was just right! Of course, that has changed since then and continues to change each season. She says recently people weren’t buying any bottoms at all for a few months in any of her stores. That had never happened before. Wendy Foster Wendy now has 4 stores. The first stores were and still are in the Upper Village in Montecito. Wendy Foster, Wendy Foster Upstairs and Angel. The square footage grew to about 10,000 square feet in Montecito and includes a “gourmetisserie”, house wares, tabletop, garden, children’s wear, books, men’s wear, bedding, wine, chocolates and gifts. Wendy Foster State Street, one of downtown Santa Barbara’s premier shopping destinations for over 20 years, offers discerning shoppers the opportunity to create entire coordinated outfits, often featuring lines designed locally or not available elsewhere, from an extensive inventory of clothing and accessories. Wendy travels to Paris to do much of her buying, bringing collections of the European culture back for local fashion lovers to cherish. She recently commented on her unique recipe for successful buying: “Because of my traveling and interests, I don’t just rely on going to the fashion trade shows. I don’t just sit back and pick things from what’s being presented to me. I’m proactive. I may see someone on the street and run after her to ask where she got her clothes. I’m always aware of what’s going on around me, what people look like and what’s coming next.” Each clothing store also has its own buyer therefore a different identity and individuality but with the Wendy Foster touch. All of the buyers worked with Wendy for some time before they became buyers. Wendy and her husband Pierre Lafond also own the Lafond Bistro Restaurant on State Street in Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Winery at 202 Anacapa St. in Santa Barbara and the Lafond Winery in Buellton. 17

Shaping the History of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Drawn to Modernism Exhibition Celebrates SBMA’s 70th Anniversary

O

n June 5, 1941 at exactly 11:43 am (determined by an astrologer as the most auspicious time), the Santa Barbara Museum of Art opened its doors to the public in a building that was previously the Santa Barbara Post Office. Therefore, 2011 marks the organization’s 70th anniversary and provides the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the collection of works and the individuals who were instrumental in shaping SBMA into the cornerstone of art and culture in the Santa Barbara community. Wright S. Ludington (1900-1992), one of the Museum’s founders, was also, without argument, its most important benefactor. Descended from a family that originally came to the New World on the Mayflower, Ludington was born in Philadelphia to a father who made his fortune in publishing Wright S. Ludington and a mother who collected Impressionist paintings. Two formative experiences during his youth helped determine the course of his life: summers spent in Europe with his family exposed him at an early age to the art and architecture of great European cities, while winters spent in Santa Barbara in his teenage years, during which he attended the Thacher School in Ojai, inspired his love of the landscape and lifestyle of southern California. He inherited property in Montecito from his father in 1927 and settled in Santa Barbara for the rest of his life. Ludington began to collect in 1924, thanks to a small inheritance from his mother. His first purchase was a small portrait head by André Derain, soon followed by paintings by Picasso and Braque. His interests were wideranging, running from classical antiquities to Asian art to European modernism – the cutting-edge art produced from the middle of the 19th century to the end of World War II. Ludington’s commitment to the art of his own time laid the foundation for one of the most important collections of modern art on the West Coast. The exhibition Drawn to Modernism: Selected Gifts from Wright S. Ludington, on view through July 24th, celebrates the Museum’s 7th decade by highlighting Ludington’s extensive gifts of European modernist works on paper. This selection of nearly 50 works, including Pablo Picasso, Italian Peasants, 1919. drawings, prints, and several sculptures, demonstrates the Pencil and smeared charcoal on paper. The WhALeS oF SuMMeR ... are in the Santa Barbara Channel!

T

he Santa Barbara Channel is known as one of the best whale watching areas in the world. Giant blue whales, playful humpback whales, plus fin and minke whales, dolphins and porpoises … all are in the nutrient rich waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Over 27 different types of whales and dolphins inhabit these waters throughout the year, making this channel one of the best whale watching areas in the world. The undisputed star of this show is

the giant blue whale. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing over 150 tons, the blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on earth … by a long shot. To put it in perspective, consider that the largest land animal, the African elephant, can attain a weight of about 7 1/2 tons … the tongue of the blue whale is larger than an African elephant. With a heart as big as a Volkswagen they are truly immense animals. Blue whales show up in the channel about mid-May and can be seen through about mid-September. For pure showmanship, however, nothing beats the friendly and active humpback whales. These magnificent creatures have been delighting people 32

from all over the world with their antics – breaching, lob tailing, slapping their pectoral fins on the water and just plain mugging boats full of eager whale watchers. They often come right to the boat and play to the people – enjoying a little people watching of their own. Humpback whales are in the channel year ‘round but are plentiful May through August. Both the Blues and Humpbacks can be seen on the Condor Express’s whale watching trips, which depart daily from Sea Landing in the Santa Barbara Harbor. At any time of year, dolphins and porpoises can be sighted on the channel crossing, and sometimes we even experience the exciting Orca, or killer whale! The premier charter boat in this area, the Condor Express is powered by four 740hp diesel engines driving water jets, making the crossing to the islands in less than an hour as opposed to 3-5 hours for other boats. They provide qualified naturalists on all voyages, a galley serving hot and cold meals, even a full cocktail bar – definitely the most comfortable way to get out to see the whales! The Condor Express runs half-day Island Whale watching trips daily, and on all trips whale sightings are guaranteed! Fares are: $99 adults, $50 children 5-12 years, children under 5 free. For reservations, call (805) 882-0088 or toll free 1-888-77WHALE.

New At The Zoo

“How to Train Your Dinosaur

T

he Santa Barbara Zoo’s newest resident is a life-size, adolescent Tyrannosaurus Rex that runs, roars, snorts, blinks, growls‌ and even poops. This amazingly life-like dinosaur was designed by the Chiodo Brothers, one of Hollywood’s top creature shops. He’s 15 ½ feet long from his nose to his tail, and 7-feet tall and his name is Duncan. He’s the star of the Zoo’s fun, new, live stage show “How to Train Your Dinosaur.â€? During the family-friendly 15-minute lively presentation, the human hosts attempt to use Duncan to demonstrate the special care received by the Zoo’s animals – with hilarious results. Just as the Zoo’s gorillas have been trained to have their teeth brushed, for example, Duncan is given a chance to improve his oral hygiene. But it’s going to take a lot of patience and positive reinforcement, just like with pets at home and the Zoo’s animals, before he is trained. Audience volunteers are also “trainedâ€? in exchange for treats. “We can’t bring the gorillas out every day and show their teeth getting brushed,â€? says Zoo CEO Rich Block. “But we can show Duncan getting the same positive reinforcement we use with the gorillas and other animals here at the Zoo. The fun part is – he learns anew every show, as does photo by: Sheri Horiszny the audience.â€? It can take weeks, sometimes months, of patient guidance by the keepers, using treats and other rewards, to train an individual animal to move to a particular spot, called ‘stationing,’ for example. Stationing allows animals to be examined and even weighed, or to receive medications. “How to Train Your Dinosaurâ€? are free with Zoo admission and are at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekends through June 15, then Wednesdays through Sundays until Labor Day. Seating is on a grassy hillside overlooking the outdoor Rolling Hill Theatre. There is no reserved seating. Duncan is sponsored by The Duncan Family. The Santa Barbara Zoo is the region’s number one visitor attraction. Open daily 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. $12 for adults 13-64 years; $10 for children 2-12 years & seniors 65+; children under 2 free; $5 parking. Visit www.sbzoo.org or call 962-5339. 34

S anta B arbara W inery World Class Varietal Wines

P

ierre Lafond has played a pioneering role in the history of Santa Barbara County’s wine industry since 1962 when he opened Santa Barbara Winery--the first post-prohibition commercial winery in the region. The visionary vintner has been producing top-quality wines ever since. The Lafond Vineyard, which receives a cooling maritime influence at its location in the western Santa Ynez Valley off of Santa Rosa Road, was planted 1971 and was one of the first in the county. Syrah and Pinot Noir were added to the winery’s repertoire a decade later when Bruce McGuire became winemaker, and in 1996 30 additional acres were added. The wines under the Santa Barbara Winery label range from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to lesser known but memorable varietals such as Negrette and Lagrein. Sea breeze and sun complement time spent at the Santa Barbara Winery tasting room--located just two blocks from the Pacific Ocean in downtown Santa Barbara--a site that doubles as a production (all their wines are processed there) and storage facility. The Lafond Winery, set on 100 acres of picturesque vineyard property, opened to the public in 2001, the same year that Sta. Rita Hills was recognized as a distinct viticultural area marked by its cool climate and longer growing season. The smalllot production of Lafond, Santa Barbara Winery’s sister label, is focused on vineyard and appellation expression, with the highest attention to detail and quality fruit. It has become renowned for its single varietal bottlings of vineyard and Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Vistors to Lafond Winery can enjoy the picnic area under the trees, where rustic tables overlook the vineyards, or relax on the newly installed patio that can accommodate small groups of up to 50 people. The spacious tasting room, with a view of the vineyard and working winery, invites lingering. Santa Barbara Winery and Lafond Winery are also available for private celebrations and events. Santa Barbara Winery, 202 Anacapa Street, call (805) 963-3633 for hours & information. 50

TEE-OFF RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE Santa Barbara’s Favorite 19th Hole For More Than 50 Years!

T

he Tee-off Restaurant and Lounge has been one of Santa Barbara’s most popular restaurants for over 50 years. The Tee-off opened its doors as a bar in 1956, befitting its name with golf motif. Located on Upper State Street off Las Positas Road in Santa Barbara, the Tee-off was the convenient local watering (19th) hole for golfers at nearby Santa Barbara Golf Course. Soon after, a full menu was added to the Tee-off, featuring prime rib, sirloin, lobster and shrimp. The Tee-off has evolved into a popular American dinner house, offering a comfortable back room for dining while maintaining a festive bar atmosphere. In 1991, John Scott and Dave Perry acquired Tee-off and refurbished the restaurant piece by piece. “Everything was brand new . . . but the same,” explained Scott. “We wanted to keep it traditional.” Tradition defines the Tee-off. The majority of the staff has more than ten years of experience at the restaurant, and many of the customers have been coming to the Tee-off for years. Doors open at the Tee-off every day at 54 4436

Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts player’s of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage

The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3 that drops steeply from tee to green offers splendid views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th, that includes a panoramic view of the five-star Bacara Resort and Spa, and, on the par-4 14th, both requiring accurate drives and approach shots to keep the ball in play. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are suberb”, says director of golf operations, Greg Villeneuve. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, practice facility, Titleist and Callaway rental clubs, PGA instruction, a well-stocked golf shop, and, a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, cocktails and other beverages.
