56 Index - Wines by Appellation
Using this brochure Starting with wines from Chablis and the Mâconnais, we then work our way up the Côte d'Or from South to North, from village to village, producer to producer. Some make wines from numerous villages; they have been placed in the village that best defines them. See the above table of contents to find each Domaine's wines. There is also an index at the back of the brochure, set out by village and vineyard, so that you can browse the entire selection by commune. All prices are as correct as possible at the time of going to print, however please be aware that these may change. Furthermore, the prices of some wines have not been released. We have put in a guide to the prices, based on the expected case size. Please note that these prices are a guide: when released the price may be higher or lower. Please check the website or call our team for up-to-date prices. The guide bands are:
100+ | 200+ | 400+ | 600+ | 800+ | 1000+
Some wines are in high demand and need to be allocated. We strive to meet all clients requests, but it should be noted that in the event of a wine being over subscribed, we prioritise those making a balanced order of wines from across the range. The wines that will be allocated are marked in this brochure with two asterisks. (**)
Burgundy and its wines are a wonder to behold: it is very hard to do them justice in a simple brochure. We hope, however, to have conveyed the quality and variety present in this wonderful region.
Bonne lecture!

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
2013 Vintage Report: Une Belle Surprise Nick Dagley, Buyer 2013 is an intriguing and distinctive vintage for the wines of Burgundy. Spawned from a late and unpredictable growing season, the best wines are genuinely exciting but it will pay to be selective. Even more than usual, it was a year in which the dedicated and hard working vignerons prevailed. Above all, it is a vintage that seems impossible to pin down. Despite the late harvest and resulting tardy malo-lactic fermentations, the majority of wines are sleek and have a sense of immediacy: they are vivacious even, and will prove difficult to resist. This is a vintage through which terroir screams. The wines are built on a foundation of acidity and appear to soak up every detail of the vineyard. Dare I say it, a year for Burgundy lovers? The growing season was again unseasonal; flowering was complicated by cold and wet late spring weather and the mood was further dampened by a pretty miserable summer. I visited in early July when most growers were concerned by the lack of ripeness and another small crop. Things were about to get much worse as hailstorms hit part of the Côte de Beaune for the second year in succession. As an aside, I am sorry to say that this devastating pattern continued in 2014. Most vineyards were treated against diseases multiple times in July and August: the weather needed to improve and quickly. Not for the first time, the September weather rescued the crop; it was warm and (unlike Bordeaux) mostly dry, which kept the threat of rot at bay. The cool summer meant for an extremely late harvest by Burgundian standards with most whites picked in the final week of September and reds during the first weeks of October. I visited 27 Domaines this October, and the only person who could remember harvesting any later was Frédéric Lafarge - in 1980!

This combination of a relatively cold spring/ summer and late harvest has produced intriguing wines with quite an old-fashioned profile. Several vignerons suggested this was like a modern day 1980: I have been lucky to drink wines from 1980 in the past few years, and they were still very much alive. Etienne Grivot and Christophe Roumier (apparently) compare 2013 to 1978, others scoffed at this. I don't believe this will rank as one of the longer lived vintages but I for one am sick and tired of waiting for my 2005s. Burgundy has gone through a huge transformation in the last 30 years. What is clear is that the talent and tools at the modern day, quality conscious vigneron's disposal have produced wines which are almost impossible to compare with days gone by. It will be, therefore, fascinating to track these wines' evolution.

Wines from Burgundy
Whites - Overwhelmingly exciting Most Chardonnay was harvested with reasonable levels of sugar and relatively high levels of acidity, and many cuv茅es were lightly chapitalised (had sugar added). Outside of Meursault hail damage was minimal. The yields were below average but more generous than 2012 for most producers. Overall I would say Chardonnay was more successful than Pinot Noir in 2013: we tasted some truly outstanding, crystalline wines which should cellar well. They don't have the power or concentration of 2012 but hold the tension which makes vintages like 2004 or 2008 so delicious. I am increasingly of the opinion that these are the vintages in which to buy white Burgundy. P.S. Chablis is incredible value for money.
Reds - Heterogeneous, but terroir-driven It is a more heterogeneous vintage for the reds. With hail damage in Volnay, Pommard and Beaune, sorting tables were required, although fortunately this was mainly to eliminate dried berries rather than rotten ones. The C么te de Nuits had an easier ride, yields were again reduced by coulure and millerandage (poor fruit set) but the lateness of the vintage has produced translucent, expressive wines that will gain further weight before bottling. The fashion for the use of whole bunches continues but appeared less prevalent than last year, whilst the amount that winemakers tried to extract varied hugely: this really isn't a year for sweeping statements. Romain Taupenot described his excellent wines as having great 'sapidity', which seemed to sum things up nicely.
The Market - Reasons to be cheerful The good news is that despite an insatiable demand for the top wines of the C么te d'Or, the early signs are that prices for 2013 will be relatively stable. Indeed, some growers were even talking about decreasing their prices, which, combined with a weaker Euro, is good news for our customers. The really good news is that 2014 has been more generous and, aside for those poor souls hailed upon once again in the C么te de Beaune, there should be a bit more volume to relieve some of the pressure next year. Bulk prices for wine from top vineyards, and indeed land prices, continue to climb, but most growers remain fearful of the bubble and are very aware of the situation in which Bordeaux finds itself. I repeat last year's message - we have huge demand for certain Domaines but the gap between the lauded and the lesser known is closing. We are fortunate to have a wonderful range, and I can promise that you will not be disappointed, whichever wines you buy.

Wines from Burgundy - Chablis & Mâconnais
Chablis & Mâconnais Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin With an incredible history of winemaking going back some 400 years, the Droin family really understand Chablis. Benoît is the 14th generation to run the estate; he has, in recent years, reduced the percentage of new oak used, returning these wines to their vibrant, zesty, exciting best, with each wine nurtured so it can best show off its own terroir.
Chablis 1er Cru Vaucoupin
Drinking 2015 - 2019
With everything in perfect balance, this is a really cracking 1er Cru. The minerality is well wrapped around fruit, making this a fantastic display of Chablis that is inherently versatile and enjoyable.
£87 per 6 bottles
Chablis 1er Cru Vosgros
Drinking 2015 - 2019
Benoît's Vosgros is typically a more structured, sturdy style of Chablis. With citrus lift on the nose and excellent minerality, the texture is enticing and elegant. In sum, an extremely well balanced and approachable wine.
£87 per 6 bottles
Chablis 1er Cru Montmains
Drinking 2015 - 2019
Montmains is a south-easterly facing vineyard, and with that comes added richness to the fruit, good concentration and riper citrus flavours. The vineyard's chalky soil is also clearly apparent in this incredibly terroir-driven wine.
£96 per 6 bottles
Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu
Drinking 2015 - 2020
South-facing and just around the hillside from the Grands Crus, this is a typically floral example from Mont de Milieu with delightful citrus flavours and minerality, particularly on the finish.
£105 per 6 bottles
Chablis Grand Cru Valmur
Drinking 2017 - 2024
Situated right in the heart of the Grand Cru hillside, the wines of Valmur are typically terrific examples of why Chablis' Grands Crus are so alluring. This is one such wine: with a slight creaminess to the palate and excellent minerality, this is, once again, my favourite of Benoît's wines.
Chablis Grand Cru Clos Even in this lifted, fresh, elegant vintage, the Clos from Droin is a serious, intense crackerjack of a wine. With floral notes, depth of fruit, and an enchanting stony finish, there is but one thing to say to the winemaker: Chapeau!

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Samuel Billaud Samuel left the family business of Billaud-Simon to set out on his own a few years ago, and, having recently acquired some of his late uncle's vineyards, his already critically acclaimed wines will only grow in stature. We can't recommend this rising star highly enough.
Chablis
Drinking 2015 - 2018
Everything you want from village Chablis, and more. This is bright and lively, with a subtle, almost juicy quality and a wonderful flintlike edge. At this price, superb.
£108 per12 bottles
Chablis 1er Cru Les Fourneaux
Drinking 2015 - 2019
The southerly exposure of Fourneaux means that it is Samuel's sunniest 1er Cru, and indeed one of the warmest overall. This is, therefore, a more forward style, with flavours of lime and ripe apple. However, the wine does not lose its classic Chablis minerality.
Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu Vines of up to 40 years old give this wine a delightful concentration on the nose, continuing onto the palate with wonderful depth of flavour and intensity. The minerality here is structural and delightful; a real pleasure to taste.
Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre This wine, from two separate plots in the vineyard, each treated slightly differently, is an incredibly display of what stony, steely Chablis is all about. With incredible depth to the minerality, this is a fantastic wine for Chablis-philes.
Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses After our delight at being able to offer this wine for the first time last year, the 2013 shows that we can add consistency to the range of superlatives that should be used to describe Samuel's winemaking. With minerality wonderfully entwined with fruit, this is breathtaking.
£159 per 12 bottles
Drinking 2015 - 2019 £180 per 12 bottles
Drinking 2015 - 2019 £180 per 12 bottles
Drinking 2016 - 2024 £210 per 6 bottles
Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
Drinking 2016 - 2024
Les Clos is the largest of Chablis Grands Crus, and this example typifies great Chablis. With a depth and intensity of flavour that you just don't find in the 1ers Crus, at this price, it's a steal.

Wines from Burgundy - Chablis & Mâconnais
Domaine William Fèvre Since its foundation in 1957 by the eponymous winemaker, William Fèvre has become one of Chablis' leading lights. It is now one of the largest owners of Grands Crus, with 16ha. Although William retired in 1998, the estate is now run by the incredibly talented Didier Séguier, previously of Maison Bouchard in Beaune. Old oak is used liberally, but never masking the balance of these wonderful wines.
Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre
Drinking 2016 - 2021
The geological structure of this highly regarded vineyard is more than a little reminiscent of the Grands Crus, and as such the wines produced are complex, elegant and alluring.
£168 per 6 bottles
Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses
Drinking 2017 - 2024
The name Preuses is said to come from Perreuse, meaning stone, and referring to a Roman road that would have run through the vineyard. With deep, dense clay soils on a bed of limestone, the wines from here are particularly ageworthy.
£282 per 6 bottles
Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots
Drinking 2017 - 2024
The gradient of Bouguerots is more than 30%, whilst the gravel & clay soil is particularly shallow, resulting in very low yields and fantastic intensity to the wines.
£288 per 6 bottles
Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
Drinking 2018 - 2026
As one of Chablis' first vineyards, and the largest of the Grand Crus, it is fair to say that Les Clos' fame is unrivalled. The deep, dense clay gives wines of intensity, richness and minerality, often alongside a slight spicy note.
£348 per 6 bottles
Héritiers du Comte Lafon The biodynamic Mâconnais alias of Comtes Lafon was only started in 1999 with the purchase of an estate in Milly-Lamartine. Further plots were added in 2003, and these wines now present a superb opportunity to get your hands on wines made with Comtes Lafon's attention to detail, to quality and to terroir. This is a wonderful demonstration of what the wines of Mâcon can do, if put in the right hands.
Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine
Drinking 2015 - 2018
A ripe, lively nose of peach and some lime is reflected in the mouth, where the ripeness is well balanced by excellent freshness. A zingy, fresh but long finish follows.
£129 per 12 bottles
Mâcon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette
Drinking 2015 - 2018
With some citrus notes behind the dominant stone fruit, a nicely rich and ripe nose leads onto a palate with excellent texture and acidity. The finish is vibrant, with hints of salinity adding complexity.
£156 per 12 bottles

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Mâcon-Bussières
Drinking 2015 - 2018
With a typical ripeness and richness to the stone fruit character, the acidity and freshness of this vintage suits this wine, offering vibrancy and lift, particularly on the finish.
£156 per 12 bottles
Mâcon-Uchizy Les Maranches
Drinking 2015 - 2018
Rich and round, the fruit character of pear, peach and grapefruit is well supported with minerality and salinity. This is an elegant wine from the Mâconnais.
£156 per 12 bottles
Viré-Clessé
Drinking 2015 - 2019
There is a roundness to both the nose and palate, with grapefruit most clearly on offer. The palate has an enjoyably salinity, which is in perfect balance with the creamyness from time on the lees. There is a fantastic minerality to the finish.
£180 per 12 bottles
Domaine Marcel Couturier Marcel Couturier is relatively new to us here at Lay & Wheeler, but we've already become well and truly convinced by his expressive, delightful wines of real character. A rising star of the region who only started bottling his own wines in 2005, Marcel is very much one to watch.
Mâcon-Loché Les Longues Terres
Drinking 2015 - 2018
The beautiful nose of citrus fruit leaning towards clementines is supported by fantastic vibrancy and life on the palate. A more drinkable wine you would struggle to find.
£48 per 6 bottles
Pouilly-Loché Vielles Vignes
Drinking 2015 - 2019
Marcel's old vines create a wine full of intensity and depth. With lovely exotic flavours and richness, all underlined by real freshness, the life in this is hard to resist.
£57 per 6 bottles
Pouilly-Fuissé Aux Scelles
Drinking 2015 - 2018
A delightful minerality supports zippy, zesty citrus fruit and some more exotic notes. An ample mouthfeel, together with a complexity of flavours, belies this wine’s outrageous value.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Côte d'Or Domaine Hubert Lamy Olivier Lamy took over from his father, Hubert, in 1996, having previously worked at Méo-Camuzet, and with his arrival the winery has seen a great improvement in quality. Now fully organic, Olivier is by no means resting on his laurels despite the fact that his wines are widely considered the finest in St. Aubin. He is constantly searching for the best expression of terroir possible, and is currently experimenting with planting densities and low sulphur winemaking, such is his attention to detail.
Santenay Clos des Hâtes From vines with an average age of around 15 years, this is completely hand-harvested and 100% destemmed. An elegant offering in 2013 with a herbaceous perfume of red berries and liquorice, it is silky and stylish on the palate of pure fruits.
Santenay 1er Cru Blanc Clos des Gravières The stony ground of a tiny walled section of the aptly named Les Gravières produces some of Santenay's finest wines. This vineyard is very close to the border with Chassagne, and these few rows of vines produce wines of a complexity not usually associated with Santenay. For fantastic value, look no further.
St-Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes "Frionnes" is a form of small bird, and the delicacy of this wine is worthy of such a comparison. Whilst not giving too much away at this stage, hints of sea spray and a chalky mineral texture initially appear, leading onto ripe and rich orchard fruits which dominate the finish.
St-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chatenière Towards the Puligny side of St-Aubin, the parcel receives more sun exposure later through the day, and offers a richer style of wine. This is well-rounded and opulent, with notes of ripe stone fruit, ginger, white pepper and a crushed sea salt tang right at the end.
St-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly The steep slopes and poor soils bestow a real definition and poise to the wines from this vineyard, situated remarkably close to Le Montrachet. Herbaceous, grapefruit notes and a touch of light toast leads onto a complex structure with weight and power but also grace and finesse. With time, this will be amazing.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Domaine Paul Pillot Now run by the charismatic and welcoming Thierry, who is never short of an opinion, tasting at Domaine Paul Pillot is always a real pleasure, and his wines this year are truly superlative. The movement here, as in many of the top domaines, is away from too much new oak, which combined with the use of natural yeasts creates wines of expression and character, from some of Chassagne's very best vineyards. Thierry's habit of being amongst the first to harvest ensures wines of great drive and freshness.
St-Aubin 1er Cru Les Pitangerets A great example of what Thierry is trying to achieve. Intense nose of struck matches and citrus oils, with clear cut, beautifully defined flavours on the palate. He was one of the first to harvest in 2013 and it's worked wonderfully well on this wine from the stony soils below Charmois. Great value.
Chassagne-Montrachet Les Mazures This village cuvée is rightly bottled separately, with Thierry claiming that this clay/limestone vineyard gives better wines than its 1er Cru neighbour, Champ Gains. Notes of nut oil and a positive reductive character combine with stone fruits: this is delicate yet earthy Chassagne, and potentially better than 2012?
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St Jean From the vineyard just behind the winery, richer soils give more density and ripeness. Spiced white peach and a creamy texture are balanced by vibrant acidity and a long mineral finish; this is considered the 'carte de visite' by the Domaine.
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Grande Montagne No new oak on this wine, which has more than a hint of Grand Cru Chablis about it. Smoky and limey with notes of fresh bread and white flowers, it is precise and chalky on the palate with layers of citrus fruits and minerality. Kudos must go to Thierry for creating such a wine.
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets Caillerets is as archetypal of Chassagne as Folatières is of Puligny. This stony vineyard gives full-bodied wines of great finesse, which only increase in beauty with age. Rich with acidity in perfect harmony and very long; if only there was more.
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Grandes Ruchottes One of the best wines in the village with great balance and huge intensity. It is Grand Cru quality in my opinion, and shouldn't require a tasting note to sell. Crème brulée, engine oil, spring blossom, I could go on…

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Formed by the marriage of Richard Fontaine and Laurence Gagnard in the 1980s, and now run by their daughter Céline, this family run affair produces wines from some of the finest and most sought after vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. Their holdings in Criots are particularly impressive, owning one of the largest sections of this tiny Grand Cru. However, don't be fooled: quality at Fontaine-Gagnard starts with the village wines.
Chassagne-Montrachet If Chassagne-Montrachet is the perfect compromise between Meursault's richness and Puligny's elegance, then this Chassagne is the epitome of this balance. If you have space in your cellar for only one case of white village wine, look no further than this delicious cuvée.
Chassagne-Montrachet, 1er Cru La Maltroie Showing great energy and citrusy freshness to complement the honeyed, creamy texture in a perfectly balanced package, La Maltroie is excellent this year. It should be perfect to drink within 3 to 5 years with pan roasted sea bass. Delicious.
Chassagne-Montrachet, 1er Cru Les Caillerets The word "Caillerets" alludes to a stony soil, to which the minerality of Fontaine-Gagnard's is testament. The fruit comes from two plots, one at the top and the other at the bottom of the vineyard, so there is a honeyed richness here which perfectly balances that minerality, whilst the finish displays lovely, refreshing citrus fruit.
Chassagne-Montrachet, 1er Cru La Romanée Delicate yet powerful, the highly sought-after La Romanée rivals many producers' Grands Crus for its superb length and pitch-perfect balance of rich, creamy character on the core of fruit and the lemony edge to the very long finish.
Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru Fontaine-Gagnard's Grands Crus are yet again superb, with their Criots a great example of the elegance and delicacy you can expect from this stony vineyard, coupled with a superb ripeness of fruit courtesy of the excellent exposition that makes this their warmest Grand Cru.
Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru This Bâtard displays a similar power and intensity to the Criots, but it is more linear, with a tight streak of acidity running through the wine and giving it a precise edge. Citrus fruit dominates the finish that slowly and gently grows in volume and power. A very powerful, yet elegant Grand Cru, this is delicious.
Le Montrachet Grand Cru This avatar from arguably the world's greatest white vineyard is surprisingly delicate, floral and mineral on the nose. On the palate, however, the density and power are outstanding, there is a superb layering of the texture, and, perhaps most surprisingly at such an early stage, it is already supremely harmonious. Once again, the finish slowly but surely builds to a crescendo: we could still taste it when we arrived at the next Domaine!

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Domaine Colin-Deléger Michel is now in semi-retirement but cannot give up making wine from three of the very finest Chardonnay terroirs. He gave the majority of his holdings to his two sons Philippe and Bruno, keeping only the very best for himself. The volumes here are tiny but the wines are sensational: Michel is a true master of his craft.
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Remilly Michel farms half a hectare of this little known but fantastically located 1er Cru: just around the corner from Chevalier-Montrachet it produces wines of tension and class. The 2013 is an intense effort with notes of lime blossom and baked bread, the palate plump yet fresh with more than a touch of Grand Cru about it. I just hope Michel doesn't retire anytime soon.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Demoiselles 70 year old vines on the northern edge of Le Montrachet, the production is tiny and it doesn't need a tasting note to sell it! Indeed, to write one would probably do this a disservice. It is Grand Cru in all but name.
Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Michel has a tiny parcel (0.08ha) of this truly great Grand Cru vineyard: we were lucky enough to taste a magnum of 2002 during our visit which was mindblowing. The 2013 is quite reserved at this stage with notes of grilled nuts, anise and some fresh citrus. The palate is dense and brooding with trademark chalky acidity and a finish which goes on and on.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Jean-Marc Pillot owns 11ha across Chassagne-Montrachet, but it is not just his famous whites that are deserving of praise from this celebrated village. Chassagne was once better known for its red wines, and examples such as Jean-Marc's demonstrate just why this is. With a gentleness of touch and an approach that preserves the purity of fruit in both reds and whites, the wines of this fantastic Domaine are always a pleasure to taste.
Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc Attractive floral aromas with yellow plum and apricot carry onto the palate giving a mouth filling, succulent texture. There is an overall sense of purity and brightness, and as always, it is beautifully balanced. Once again this is one of the finest village Chassagnes we taste.

Drinking 2016 - 2019
An elegant and fresh expression of Puligny, this is really rather enchanting. The fruit on the nicely weighty palate is predominantly citrus, with a slight salinity on the expressive finish.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes
Drinking 2017 - 2012
This is a wine of precision and definition. It balances depth of flavour and intensity with minerality and tension. There is a combination of weight and texture with a lovely elegance and a long finish; concentration with a lightness of touch.
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets Not to be confused with the Puligny vineyard of almost the same name, this Premier Cru produces wines with excellent minerality, alongside slight exotic hints to the delightful fruit profile. Crushed stones dominate the long, complex finish.
Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 1er Cru Clos-St-Jean In his 1855 study of Burgundy, Dr Lavalle labelled this vineyard tête de cuvée for Pinot Noir, his highest designation. Virtually all other vineyards of this classification are Grands Crus in the modern appellation system: this is arguably Chassagne's finest red vineyard. Rich and concentrated, albeit not opulent, there is a focus and clarity of fruit with a frame of fine-grained tannins; this is pure and focussed.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Domaine Philippe Colin Tasting at Philippe's modern winery on the outskirts of Chassagne, and looking at his smart, modern labels, gives an insight into the approach of this incredibly talented winemaker. They follow the philosophy of Lutte Raisonée here, believing that quality starts with the health of the vineyard. With a softly-softly approach to the wines, the results put an emphasis on subtlety rather than power. If this is Chassagne's modern face, then we are certainly converts.
Bourgogne Blanc
Drinking 2015 - 2018
From parcels in, amongst other places, St Aubin, this impressively concentrated Bourgogne Blanc is driven by citrus, pithy flavours, with a slight salinity adding complexity. Lifted and refreshing.

Chassagne-Montrachet

Pretty fruit on the nose with lemon pith, a nicely textured palate, a certain richness and a slight minerality. Power and elegance defines this exciting village Chassagne.

Puligny-Montrachet

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes
Drinking 2017 - 2022
For a vineyard close to Le Montrachet this is unsurprisingly tropical in character, with lovely lime notes and an elegant richness. Minerality gives balance to a concentrated, alluring and expressive Chassagne 1er Cru.
£360 per 12 bottles
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Chaumes
Drinking 2017 - 2021
An elegant, lifted nose, verging on the more tropical, and a soft palate with slight minerality, this is another standout 1er Cru from Philippe Colin.
£360 per 12 bottles
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Demoiselles
Drinking 2018 - 2024
This tiny (0.60ha) 1er Cru is enclosed by Le Cailleret, and consists of the very final few rows before Le Montrachet: its noble breeding is therefore assured. With concentration and power yet freshness and lift, it is everything that you would hope it would be, and more.
Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru The concentration of fruit on the nose sings through ripe red apples to stone fruits, with some tropical notes, although this is the coolest of the Grand Cru neighbours. Everything is wonderfully balanced: the texture, the freshness and the hints of spice and minerality. In sum, a complete wine.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Alain Chavy One of the sons of Gérard Chavy, Alain and his brother split up the vineyards between them. This is traditional Puligny winemaking, with parcels of vines in great vineyards, lovingly tended and carefully vinified. The results are, in 2013, a fantastic expression of what Puligny-Montrachet is all about.
Puligny-Montrachet Lieu-dit Charmes Stone fruit and citrus notes on the nose, with some white blossom notes and mineral hints. The texture is ample and inviting, with a well balanced freshness and just a hint of oak on the finish. Very attractive.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières A nicely smoky, slightly reductive nose with stone fruit, this is very good 1er Cru Puligny. Stone fruit on the palate with oak support, and continued smoky hints. If you're looking for classic Puligny, this is for you.

Alain Chavy
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon
Drinking 2016 - 2020
A slight reductive edge when tasted, but still a pretty nose of citrus and some riper fruit. The palate is quite floral, with lifted orange zest carrying onto the intense finish.
£348 per 12 bottles
Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Drinking 2017 - 2021
The nose is much more intense and dense, with richer fruit. Some smoky oak on the concentrated palate is matched with minerality. With an excellent texture, you find yourself hoping that the finish will go on for ever.

Domaine J.M.Boillot Grandson of Etienne Sauzet, one of Burgundy's most famed vignerons, and having worked previously as winemaker at Olivier Leflaive, Jean-Marc is a man of great experience who benefits from the fact that winemaking truly runs in his blood. His are wines that wonderfully display terroir. With a richness of flavour yet a lightness of touch, they are always a delight to behold: particularly when in the company of the charming Jean-Marc or his daughter, Lydie.

Puligny-Montrachet
Drinking 2016 - 2020
Citrus lift on the nose, with good freshness and a slight softness from the oak, which continues through to the charming finish. With excellent concentration, this is a really good Puligny.
£318 per 12 bottles
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts
Drinking 2017 - 2022
The already expressive nose has more lees and oak character than the village wine. The concentration of fruit, more grapefruit in character, is well balanced with excellent freshness, whilst the elegant lift on the finish makes this a more feminine style of wine.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet Made from, according to Jean-Marc, young vines - they are 65 years old, planted in his birth year - with a high level of millerandage and low yields, this has delightful intensity. Exotic fruit on the nose and very open on the palate, a superb expressiveness with lovely balance of oak and excellent concentration runs all the way onto the finish.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru les Combettes If you look on a map Les Combettes is level with Bâtard-Montrachet, giving a hint as to the quality to be expected. This is a more masculine style than Jean-Marc's other wines, and whilst slightly closed at the moment, there is a real density. That said, there is great acidity meaning that it freshness and vibrancy is not lacking. Those comparisons with Bâtard aren't far wrong!
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Truffière With great minerality and vivacity on the nose, notes of citrus and apple abound whilst maintaining a great creamy balance. The calcaire soils of La Truffière are reflected on the palate, with tension and minerality which follow through to the finish, alongside a great freshness and richness of flavour. In a vintage defined by terroir-driven wines, this still stands out. Superb.

Domaine Leflaive Under the leadership of Vincent’s daughter, Anne-Claude, Domaine Leflaive continues to produce wines of supremacy, with the latest crop exemplifying 2013s vineyard and terroir definition. As is always the case, Leflaive’s are beautiful, ageworthy and irresistible wines that, as Antoine Lepetit says, have the tension and mineral extract that expresses the Puligny style so well.
Bourgogne Blanc A superb bottling in its own right that benefits from Domaine Leflaive's philosophy of consistent élevage from village level through to Grand Cru. Impressive mineral depth with a delicate softness from the barrel fermentation, the palate has the same expansive quality as the more serious wines.
Puligny-Montrachet Unsurprisingly, this has all the hallmarks of great Puligny. There's a complex and thoroughly delicious intertwining of flint and soft cream with a serious sense of accomplishment on the palate: superb balance, silky extract in the mouth and underlying mineral power that belies the village status.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon Clavoillon sits on clay and with age transforms into the muscular brother to the other Crus. On early tasting there is less up-front fruit on the palate than the straight Puligny, with a focus on texture and intensity. Thanks to the freshness this will be long-lived: a brooding, classic 1er Cru with engaging tension.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Leflaive continued
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles ** If the Grand Crus to the south and west express the richer side of Leflaive and the Clavoillon accounts for the firm structure, Les Pucelles epitomises everything that is beautiful about Puligny's classically elegant style. Floral, ethereal and expressive but with an underlying grip and concentration that gives the vineyard its status as one of Burgundy's great white wines. This is stunning.
Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru ** Combing the richness of Chevalier with the eloquence of Pucelles, this is a gorgeous example of the opulence and fleshiness of Bâtard's soils. Generous, silky intensity with pure fruit concentration and an underlying sweet richness. Precision and flair; exceptional.
Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru ** Needing little introduction, the 2013 Chevalier-Montrachet undoubtedly has the power, minerality and structural integrity to age almost as long as the 2012, but already shows the golden-rich magnificence bestowing on the Montrachets their status. A Chevalier true to its super-fine limestone roots: expansive and with indescribable presence.

Domaine Comtesse Bernard de Cherisey From the hamlet of Blagny, up in the hills between Puligny and Meursault, comes Domaine Comtesse Bernard de Cherisey. With a stable that only consists of 1er Cru wines, the wines of this Domaine, with a history reaching back to 1834, invariably balance a richness of flavour with a wonderful minerality. When we visited this year Laurent was having considerable work done at the winery, allowing us to see a cross section of the soil on which these prized wines grow: the level of iron in the soils of Blagny was fascinating, and gives an insight into the reasons for the hamlet's characteristic minerality.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny This is a floral, forward and expressive style of Puligny. Full of intense flavours – pear, white peach and greengage allied with freshness and elegance. This is not a taut, mineral Puligny, but rather a more rounded, giving and flowing style, and is most attractive for being so.
Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru La Genelotte High on the slope this vineyard is within a small valley, forming a natural amphitheatre and benefitting from being a summer sun-trap. The resulting wine is the most generous, rich and voluminous of Laurent’s wines, crafted with his skill in producing elegant, fine and delicately balanced wines. The contrast has given a wine of depth of flavour and poise.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Olivier Leflaive Frères The name 'Leflaive' carries a certain gravitas, and indeed expectation, when linked to the whites of Burgundy. Cousin of Anne-Claude at Leflaive, Olivier was co-manager there in the early 1990s, before setting out entirely on his own with the business that bears his name. Favourite of the rich and famous (Jenson Button was recently photographed here), Olivier and talented winemaker Frank Grux produce elegant wines that are certainly deserving of the Leflaive name.
Bourgogne Blanc
Drinking 2014 - 2016
Made from fruit sourced predominantly around the villages of PulignyMontrachet and Meursault, this Bourgogne has classic Chardonnay flavours of citrus and buttered toast.

St-Aubin 1er Cru Charmois
Drinking 2015 -2018
Chiselled and aromatic with great energy, wines like this put most village level Puligny to shame. The word Charmois is derived from hill (chaume) rather than charm but this wine has oodles of the latter. With great definition this is our pick of the St Aubin 1ers Crus produced by Franck Grux in 2013; very good value and will repay some time in the bottle.
Meursault Vireuils This excellent lieu-dit lies just behind the village and its white limestone-rich white soils have produced a wine with notes of crushed oyster shell and greengage. The palate is flowing, with surprising weight, great persistence and a lovely lifted finish.
Chassagne-Montrachet Houllières Consistently better than the straight village wine, in years like 2013 this is almost at 1er Cru level. There is more clay in the soil, retaining moisture and producing a serious mouthfeel of weight and poise. This is a savoury and food friendly wine.
Puligny-Montrachet Classic Puligny, with a floral, flinty nose. The palate is plump yet refreshing, with greengage and a complex herby finish. Immediately appealing, there is enough substance to improve in the bottle over the next few years.
Meursault 1er Cru Santenots This vineyard lies on the border of Volnay and is a relatively new addition for Olivier Leflaive. Made from 70 year old vines, only three barrels were produced in 2013. Concentrated, with notes of grilled nuts and an almost salty, tannic edge, this is an age worthy wine with a lifted, spicy finish. Proper Meursault.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet In our eyes one of the top 1ers Crus in the village, producing driven, mineral wines which could only be Puligny. This is much leaner and more racy than the Truffières with notes of crushed rock and pithy, concentrated fruit. Extremely fine boned but far from delicate, this is multi-faceted and should spread its wings further in the bottle.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Olivier Leflaive Frères continued
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Truffières As its name suggests, this vineyard was formerly a truffle bed. It lies relatively high up on the slope and produces suave wines that are the epitome of Puligny. Hugely expressive on the nose, this is a multifaceted wine of breeding. Notes of crushed rock, green apple and apricot blossom are all bound together by a hugely refined structure.
Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières From the second best vineyard in Meursault this is a classic example. Tightly wound with crushed stones, yellow plum and spring blossom on the nose, the palate is incredibly detailed with a grippy structure. It needs a couple of years in the bottle to relax but has huge potential.

Michel Bouzereau et Fils Michel Bouzereau is a man of great sway in Burgundy. As well of being head of the Bouzereau clan, he has held the prestigious post of President of the Burgundy Growers Union. Quite a shadow, therefore, for his son Jean-Baptiste to have stepped into. However, he has been able to tread his own path, combining his father's traditionalist philosophy with a fresher, vibrant style, creating fantastic wines from his 11ha of vines in Meursault and Puligny. Each Cuvée is treated individually and sympathetically, meaning that these are wines of great depth and balance.
Bourgogne Chardonnay The berries used for this come from very old vines, some planted as far back as 1957. Perfumed aromas of honeysuckle and peach draw you into the glass, whilst on the palate a wonderful combination of acidity, freshness and chalky minerality with pear skin, green apple and lemon pith leads you through to the finish.
Meursault Le Limozin Powerful aromas jump out; exotic and alluring with a touch of woodsmoke. A rich and textured body with layers of peach and apricot and just a touch of lime. The intensity is immense, but there is pleasing minerality and freshness to balance. Don't be fooled, however: this wine is all about the fruit intensity.
Meursault 1er Cru Blagny An exotic nose with pineapple and mango notes jumps out of the glass, with toasted hazelnut adding complexity. The mouthfeel is ample, with freshness cutting through the again exotic fruit profile, creating a Meursault of lift and balance.
Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières Fruitful aromas and warm winter spice, alluring and intense, is mirrored on the palate with masses of concentration and structure. The power is immense; a wonderful wine with huge potential. ‘2013 is a classic vintage and the wines have precision’ Jean-Baptiste told us.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gains This parcel of vines is on the northern side of Puligny, offering a little altitude to the fruit, and the average age of the vines here is about 30. Smoky notes and hints of white pepper on the nose, followed by layers unfurling with ginger and spice offering a touch of savouryness on the finish.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Domaine Ballot-Millot With 12ha of vines, Ballot-Millot is a historic Domaine based in Meursault. The Ballot and Millot families began acquiring vines in the area in the 17th century, with Charles Ballot at the helm of the estate since 2000. He destems all of the hand-harvested fruit before fermenting with natural yeasts. The wines that result are intense and often serious, but also incredibly consistent.
Meursault Les Narvaux Les Narvaux is a distinguished lieu-dit and Charles Ballot crafts a particularly fine example. This is a cool fruited expression with pear and white peach flavours presented with purity and a creamy texture. It is this level of quality that shows why Meursault stands out for the excellence of its village wines.
Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières One of the best vineyards in Meursault (the upper part is on quality par with Perrières) this wine carries the breadth and volume associated with Meursault alongside the focus, definition and precision that are the hallmarks of Charles’ wines. As might be expected, there is detail, complexity and a long finish.

Meursault 1er Cru Perrières
Drinking 2018 - 2023
An outstanding 1er Cru, this wine is concentrated, weighty, mineral and complex. It is suffused with flavour and carries itself with poise and grace. Genuinely thrilling, this exemplifies the pinnacle of Meursault.

Domaine Patrick Javillier Patrick Javillier is a reflective, untiring man who produces wines of incredibly harmony and balance. Key to his philosophy is the belief that long élévage leads to wines that are not only complex and intense, but that also have an incredibly ability to age: who are we to argue? A indefatigable perfectionist, Patrick's Cuvée Oligocène is one wine that unites our office: many of our team purchase this wine themselves every year.
Bourgogne Blanc Cuvée Oligocène Crafted from limestone-rich vineyards on the Puligny side of Meursault, Cuvée Oligocène truly is a Lay & Wheeler stalwart, with staff and clients alike following it year after year. Once again the 2013 delivers, with a beautiful, citrus-driven freshness on the nose, followed by a superb balance of rich, creamy notes and a precise streak of acidity in the background. Once again punching above its weight.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Patrick Javillier continued
Meursault Les Tillets This village plot is situated at the top of the hill in Meursault, on a very thin topsoil covering the bedrock. There is no doubt that this displays a beautifully fresh minerality, followed on the palate by a soft mid-palate of pear and white peach, cut through by perfectly balanced acidity and minerality on the finish.
Drinking 2016 - 2020 £288 per 12 bottles
Meursault Les Clousots
Drinking 2016 - 2020
Sitting as the best of both worlds between the precision of Tillets and the power of Tête de Murger, Les Clousots displays the blend of power and minerality that is very much Patrick Javillier's calling card.
£168 per 6 bottles
Meursault Tête de Murger
Drinking 2017 - 2022
In this doubly-eponymous blend fruit from Casse-Tête (top of the hill, bringing freshness and precision) and Murgers de Monthélie (bringing ripeness and body), the ample, full-bodied fruit core that fills the palate soon moves on to a linear, clean and long citrussy finish.
Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Once again a testament to the finesse of Patrick's palate, his CortonCharlemagne, far from being the blockbuster behemoth this vineyard often produces, is all about subtle, elegant power and a hugely mineral finish that gradually and softly grows until it completely dominates. With such amazing length there should be a long and bright future ahead of this wine.

Domaine Michel Lafarge Michel, now over 80 years old, and his son Frédéric make incredibly traditional wines from the finest terroirs in Volnay, with the vineyards meticulously tended according to biodynamic principles. These are wonderful wines with an almost unrivalled ability to age, with each vintage carefully judged and specifically treated and tended to ensure that terroir is best demonstrated. Unfortunately for Michel and Frédéric, 2014 was another hail-hit vintage, meaning, Frédéric tells us, that they will have only produced one normal vintage's quantity of wines over the last three years.
Bourgogne Aligoté Raisins Dorés From 75 year old vines, this is not your typical Bourgogne Aligoté. It has apple fruit, a very pretty concentration with citrus adding complexity. The palate is zippy and fresh, with a lovely texture and great depth of flavour. Ageworthy and alluring.
Drinking 2015 - 2018 £117 per 12 bottles
Bourgogne Passetoutgrains "L'Exception"

Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans **
Drinking 2019 - 2028
From vines aged between 40 and 65 years old, a perfumed, charming, fragrant nose with great freshness leads onto a palate of supple, if considerable, tannins. There is a lovely juiciness to the red fruit on this wine of delicacy and distinction.
£417 per 12 bottles
Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes **
Drinking 2019 - 2030
A more aromatic nose, with darker and more exotic fruit and a delightful texture, the power is impressive, but freshness and refinement still abound. A sleeping beauty, this will be a wonder of a wine.
£459 per 6 bottles
Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs **
Drinking 2019 - 2030
Power and concentration on the nose, this is fruit driven with complexity added by spicy notes. The palate is juicy and fresh with tannins in abundance giving a fantastic texture, whilst the superb finish is incredibly concentrated. A humdinger of a wine.

Domaine Louis Boillot Louis Boillot was previously at Domaine Lucien Boillot with his father and brother in Gevrey, whilst, as his selection of wines would suggest, the family was initially Volnay-based. Louis himself relocated to Chambolle in 2003 to be with his wife, Ghislaine Barthod, and they now share the same vineyard team. From whichever vineyard, from Volnay to Gevrey, Louis' wines are always pure with depth of flavour and a fantastic focus on terroir.
Volnay 1er Cru Les Angles Generally acknowledged to be one the best wines to come out of this vineyard, Louis Boillot’s Les Angles is an incredible pretty expression of Pinot Noir. Beautifully aromatic, with notes of raspberry, cranberry and forest floor, the palate shows concentration of crunchy fruit, refreshing acidity and silky tannins.
Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards With a vine age of 67 years, there is now some serious concentration and depth to this wine. Normally one of the more masculine cuvées, 2013 Brouillards is all about purity of fruit, freshness and elegance. It displays a very healthy, bright colour, vibrant fruit and wonderful sense of energy.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers By far the most concentrated and weighty of Louis' wines this year, Les Pruliers has a darker fruit profile with plum, blackberry and a touch of spice. The mouthfeel is really impressive with supple tannins and a glossy texture. As is the hallmark of the best 2013s, there is an exquisite sense of freshness to the palate, lending energy and focus to the palate.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine de Montille The late Hubert de Montille, who passed away only a matter of months ago, was a larger-than-life character, taking the family Domaine from obscurity in the 1950s and turning it into a terroir-focussed Domaine of real substance. His son Etienne, a man of great charisma and hospitality, has continued in this vain, making wines from some of Burgundy's finest vineyards that display terroir with a truly remarkable clarity. Most notable, and most in demand, is the truly ethereal Cuvée Christianne, named after Etienne's mother, and made from vines in a small enclave of the celebrated La Tâche, under the label of Malconsorts.
Beaune 1er Cru Aigrots Blanc Beaune is not often seen as a source of quality whites, but this wine certainly bucks the trend. 2013 Beaune Aigrots is a little stunner of a wine, with beautifully ripe citrus fruit, a nice floral character on the nose and an almost salty tang to the finish. It certainly punches well above its weight, remaining well priced despite its quality.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Cailleret Etienne de Montille and his son, Louis
Given that the Le Cailleret lies directly adjacent to Le Montrachet, it is not entirely surprising that the best wines can be of Grand Cru Quality. The concentration is mind boggling, with perfect balance and a finish that goes on for an age. This is a super fine, extraordinary expression of Puligny.
Meursault 1er Cru Perrières This is a fantastic example of this wonderful Meursault 1er Cru. Whilst there is a richness to the nose, the palate is driven by this stony vineyard's characteristic minerality, resulting in a wine with excellent aging potential.
Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru One of the most exotic and ripe wines we tasted, this Corton-Charlemagne is a huge wine of stunning concentration and quality. It displays beautifully ripe peach, lemon and grapefruit notes, an unctuous texture and spine tingling acidity. With another layer of complexity lurking just beneath the fruit, this is a benchmark Corton-Charlemagne from a wonderful Domaine.

Beaune Sizies sees no whole bunches this year and only 10% new oak. A prettier and more accessible wine you will find hard to come by, this is a glorious expression of Pinot Noir. The palate shows firm but discreet tannins, juicy red fruit, a pleasing texture and a hint of sandalwood. Always great value, a Lay & Wheeler favourite.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Beaune Grèves is quite rightly regarded as one of, if not the best vineyard in Beaune. It has a similar aromatic nose to Les Sizies, with lovely orange blossom tones and crunchy red fruit, on the palate it is very different indeed. Much more tannic, with darker fruit and more spice, this is really quite a serious wine that will benefit from medium term cellaring.
Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans The only wine in the de Montille range this year to use 100% whole bunch fermentation, Mitans is always the prettiest of de Montille's wines. It shows concentration, vivid fruit and has a real sense of energy and lift. It was so delicious, it was almost impossible to spit when tasting: normally a good sign.
Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds Taillepieds is generally considered to be de Montille's best wine from this commune, producing fine, tannic wines that age brilliantly. There is really impressive depth to this wine, natural acidity framing stunning dark fruit and spice. Quite tight at present, I suspect this will be one of the longer-lived wines of 2013.
Pommard 1er Cru Les Pézerolles Les Pézerolles is a somewhat atypical Pommard, and almost more Volnay in style. Though it has fantastic density and good structure, by Pommard standards it is an almost painfully pretty wine. Aromatic, the purity of fruit is just fantastic. This is a fine, supremely balanced wine which has taken all the positives from the vintage: freshness, elegance and purity of fruit.
Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens-Bas Without any doubt one of the premier vineyards in Pommard and generally considered to produce wines of Grand Cru quality, de Montille’s Rugiens is up there with the best of them and in 2013 is an immensely powerful and ageworthy wine. Loaded with dark fruit, spice and lavender top notes, at present the palate is only hinting at its considerable potential.
Nuits-St-Georges Aux-Saints-Juliens Displaying a deep colour and exuding class, this is not a big wine, but nevertheless has a pleasing weight and excellent mouthfeel. Prizing intensity of flavour over power and weight, the raspberry and blackberry compote flavours are surrounded by oh-so-silky tannins and seasoned with refreshing acidity.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Malconsorts ** A wine that doesn’t need much in the way of an introduction, de Montille’s Malconsorts is a spectacular effort. A huge deep dark brooding wine that exudes class, it is definitely one for the future. Loaded with dark cherry, blackberry and raspberry fruit, overlaying a distinctive graphite note and a sprinkling of Vosne spice. Perfectly proportioned, seriously impressive, de Montille are on form in 2013!

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine de Montille continued
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Malconsorts, Christianne ** By comparison with Malconsorts, Cuvée Christianne seems really quite exotic and is certainly much more fun to taste at present. It is a rich, opulent, hedonistic beauty of a wine. Unfortunately rare as hen's teeth, for those lucky enough to buy this, you are in for a treat. In a word, exquisite!
Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru With depth of flavour to the fruity, lifted nose and a palate with enjoyable spicyness, it is the purity of dark fruit and minerality that stands out on this excellent Corton. Once again, Corton shows its possibilities as an excellent value Grand Cru.
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Etienne de Montille told us that he has really only been happy with his Clos Vougeot since the 2009 vintage, believing that he has made a better wine every year since. It is clear that in 2013 this progression has continued. It has a gorgeously intense palate, loaded with dark cherry, strawberry and spice. There is such a sense of vitality and energy to the wine that even though a big wine with big tannins, it is a dream to taste, even at this embryonic stage. Certainly one of the highlights of 2013.

Domaine des Epeneaux (Comte Armand) Best known for its monopole Clos des Epeneaux, arguably Pommard's finest vineyard, Comte Armand can almost certainly be credited with producing the commune's most elegant, silky and finessed wines. Now with the dynamic Paul Zinetti at the helm, with the super-talented Benjamin Leroux having left to pursue his own negociant business, we can only see this Domaine (hail withstanding) going from strength to strength. Just don't be in a hurry with the 'Clos'...
Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru One of the best value wines in our range, and a great example of the talent and dedication to quality of this historic Domaine. Waves of raspberry, cranberry and violets with plenty of grip and depth and intensity, this is a wine to buy every year.
Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux The new winemaking team had a difficult first year, with the lowest yields on record after more hail in the 'Clos'. Another atypical wine of immense concentration; indeed it is quite monolithic at this stage. It will be fascinating to see how this trio of low production vintages age: I suspect they will become collector's items, and rightly so.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Louis Jadot Louis Jadot is undoubtedly one of Burgundy's best known names. Alongside the negociant side of the business there are numerous Domaine wines, with fantastic vineyards owned by the Beaune-based producer. With consistency across the range, and parcels of vines in some of the Côte d'Or's most prized sites, such as Les Demoiselles in Chevalier-Montrachet, to write Louis Jadot off as simply a negociant would be a grave error, and would to be to miss out on some of Burgundy's most attractive offerings.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne, Domaine Duc de Magenta
Drinking 2018 - 2024
This tiny, walled 1er Cru sits just below Folatières, slap bang in the middle of Puligny. Chalky soils bring grace and elegance but there is great concentration balanced by grippy malic notes. Floral and very classic it will age beautifully, this is a wonderful and rarely seen wine which should be snapped up en-primeur.
£249 per 6 bottles
Puligny-Montrachet, 1er Cru Les Folatières
Drinking 2018 - 2025
Second only to the Grand Cru wines at the 2013 Jadot tasting, for me this is one of the best Folatières produced. Indeed, I have wonderful memories of a 1992 I enjoyed a couple of years ago. Very Puligny with great finesse, delicacy and drive there are notes of oyster shell, anise and stone fruit with a long layered finish.
Corton-Charlemagne, Grand Cru Jadot own an exceptional 2 hectare south facing plot in the lieu dit of Le Charlemagne and produce one of the finest wines in the appellation. An aristocratic wine of hidden depths, it remains reserved and powerful with hints of honey and spice, having gobbled up that new oak. The 2013 appears to be built for the long haul.
Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru Toasty, rich and already quite expressive, this is a masculine, savoury style of Chardonnay with a big extracted feel and laser-like acidity. A great wine from one of the great vineyards of Burgundy, this finishes with the scale and lift of a skyscraper.
Chevalier-Montrachet, Les Demoiselles, Grand Cru Jadot own half of the famed climat les Demoiselles within ChevalierMontrachet. It produces a world-beating wine which is surely one of the finest whites of Burgundy. The 2013 has huge complexity with honeysuckle, white peach and crushed rock, the palate is seamless and refreshing, making this truly imperious.
Le Montrachet, Grand Cru ** A wine which truly lives up to its legendary status, seeming to combine all the best parts of the surrounding Grands Crus, then bettering them by adding a few additional layers. Balance is the key to this unique wine which demands bottle age.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Louis Jadot continued
Beaune 1er Cru Clos de Ursules This 2.15 hectare enclave which has been in Jadot's hands since 1826 sits within Les Vignes Franches and is without doubt one of the jewels of the portfolio. Surprising structure to the firm, lush mouth with spiced raspberry notes, this is multi-dimensional with so much to offer.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Boudots Another top 1er Cru that seems to be in the ascendancy, lying on the Vosne border it produces opulent Nuits with a smoky edge and supple yet serious tannins. This was one of the best wines in the room for me with drive and harmony, a compact structure and a soaring finish. This will be very good indeed.
Drinking 2019 - 2027 £210 per 6 bottles
Drinking 2019 - 2028 £279 per 6 bottles
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St-Jacques
Drinking 2019 - 2029
Lying alongside the top half of Clos-Saint-Jacques, Estournelles is one of the finest vineyards in the village of Gevrey. Spicy and rich with blackberry and hints of tar and pepper, this is a baby of great potential. With seemingly perfect balance between fruit and acidity, with plenty of fine, grippy tannins and subtle oak, this is charming.
£279 per 6 bottles
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos-St-Jacques
Drinking 2020 - 2032
Considered the finest 1er Cru in Gevrey, often fetching prices higher than several Grands Crus, its wines resemble Chambertin (and that's not a bad vineyard to resemble!). Vigourous, complex and full-bodied they are the epitome of the village and understandably very difficult to find.
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses Situated just under the great Musigny, Les Amoureuses produces wines that are almost too easy to love. Jadot's has a wonderful, vibrant nose of intense fruit and violets, with a palate-filling texture and a gorgeous finish that seems to last an eternity.
Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Jadot's vines are right in the centre of this great vineyard, and their wines are amongst the very best examples. With an extraordinary bouquet that leaps from the glass, this is a mesmerising wine with satin-like tannin and mineral drive, it has an exotic and spicy finish which goes on and on.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Chanson Père et Fils At Domaine Chanson there is a clear symbiosis between the old and new. The Domaine's history is demonstrated by its 15th century cellars, situated in the historic centre of Beaune, whilst having been bought by Bollinger in the late 1990s, the estate has undergone new and dynamic changes in both winery and vineyard, turning to organic farming. Holding this all together is the charismatic and energetic Jean-Pierre Confuron, whose emphasis on both past and future has accompanied a great improvement in the Domaine's quality.
Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Caradeaux From the slope that borders Corton-Charlemagne, this is unsurprisingly intense. True, the slope faces more eastwards than its feted neighbour, but don't let that discourage you. For the price, with intensity, complexity and lift like this, you'd struggle to beat this elegant Pernand.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Folatières Classic 1er Cru, from slightly up the hill from the village, this has everything you could want from Puligny-Montrachet. A slight minerality alongside a concentration of fruit and a hint of smokiness, this is complex and beautifully put together.
Drinking 2016 - 2020 £129 per 6 bottles
Drinking 2017 - 2021 £312 per 6 bottles
Corton Vergennes Grand Cru
Drinking 2017 - 2022
This oft-forgotten Grand Cru has produced in 2013 a wine that is lifted, fresh and mineral, with complexity and a finish that seems to go on forever. Superb.
£399 per 6 bottles
Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Dominode
Drinking 2016 - 2020
Much more open, red-fruit scented and tightly tannic than Chanson’s Beaune cuvées, this Savigny remains on the pleasant side of austere, providing a classic style that should age well for some years to come.
£129 per 6 bottles
Beaune Rouge 1er Cru Clos du Roi
Drinking 2017 - 2021
Grown on sandy soil, the fruit from the northerly Clos du Roi exhibits a deliciously rich and dark core of fruit, quite ripe but the Beaune terroir and whole bunch winemaking bring a firm, muscular tannic structure and a lifted aromatic edge with leafy notes and just a hint of tobacco. Great poise and precision, a wine to lay down to really benefit from its complexity.
£129 per 6 bottles
Beaune Rouge 1er Cru Clos Bressandes
Drinking 2017 - 2022
Full bodied, voluminous and tannic, this is an impressively powerful Beaune, yet there is a very minerally edge that brings interest, elegance and helps it linger on the subtle, charming finish.
£180 per 6 bottles
Beaune Rouge 1er Cru Clos des Fèves
Drinking 2017 - 2023
Whole bunch winemaking promotes opened aromatics at an early stage, and the intensely floral nose of this year’s Clos des Fèves certainly demonstrates this. On the palate there is no shortage of power and concentration; the rich fruit is matched by plenty of complexity and a typically Beaune tannic structure. This is classy and should age very well indeed.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Chanson Père et Fils continued
Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru The intensity of aromatics on this Chambertin Clos de Bèze is quite staggering. On the palate the fruit is sweet, profound and amazingly powerful. The tannins are very ripe and fruit-coated, however they are also undeniably enormous, providing a structure for the very long term. On the long finish layer after layer of flavour is revealed, showing super complexity and giving just a hint of the wine this will one day become. Absolutely stunning!
Drinking 2018 - 2030 £870 per 6 bottles
Domaine Chandon de Briailles Run by the de Nicolay family since 1834, Chandon de Briailles produces wines of real elegance and poise from appellations that are sometimes better known for their more bucolic styles. Tasting here is always a pleasure, with Claude, who runs the estate alongside her brother François, and her dogs, the long-established Darling and a new addition this year.
Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses Blanc
Drinking 2016 -2019
Orchard fruits with a touch of crushed almonds, an interesting nose that is very complex. This is mirrored on the palate: green apples in abundance and a hint of winter spice. Clean and fresh but with plenty of substance.
£159 per 6 bottles
Corton Blanc Grand Cru
Drinking 2017 - 2021
White Corton is incredibly rare, but that should not discourage you. In its youth, restrained, subtle even, but with time this will develop into a rich, powerful white, full of complexity and charm. One for the long haul, yes, but those who wait will be richly rewarded.
Claude de Nicolay
Savigny-Lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Fourneaux Produced from the limestone and clay-rich soils of the northern part of this vineyard, the limestone really giving a lifted minerality that runs all the way through the wine. Lots of pure red fruits entwine with finely grained tannins and a gentle hint of spice right on the finish, this is pleasingly complex.
Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Vergelesses Amongst the best vineyards in Pernand, as explains the suffix, this year Chandon de Briailles' Les Vergelesses has worked very well. With crunchy red fruit and excellent freshness, this is a very pretty, lifted style of wine, and one that suits both Domaine and vineyard.
Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses As was the trend, there was a later harvest for this wine in 2013, and Claude tells us that this explains a slight loss of fruit. She says, "It's a wine with potential, straight style, there was a good crop and good ripeness". There is a silky texture, pure and driven with a lingering finish, making this a delight to taste and leaving you wanting more.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru Claude told us that 50% whole bunches were used in the blend: they did not need anymore as the wine already had plenty of structure. The fruit profile is darker, and very pure and precise. The tannins are well integrated, fine and silky leading you into a mineral and fresh lingering finish. This is superb.
Drinking 2018 - 2028 £420 per 6 bottles
Domaine de l'Arlot Domaine de l'Arlot belies its ownership by AXA millésimes: to visit it feels like a family estate rather than a 'big company making wine'. Jacques Devauges, who has been technical director since 2011, is leaving for pastures new this year to be replaced by Géraldine Godot. With a fantastic selection of parcels of vines in some of the best vineyards Burgundy can offer, we are confident that the estate will continue to go from strength to strength under Géraldine's talented leadership.
Nuits-St-Georges La Gerbotte Blanc
Drinking 2016 - 2019
Very floral on the nose, la Gerbotte follows on the palate with rich, honeyed and creamy notes - lovely and very seductive indeed.
£114 per 6 bottles
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot Blanc
Drinking 2017 - 2021
Exotic, pineapple-led and very ripe, the Clos de l’Arlot Blanc is unashamedly a big, rich white. Very impressive due to its volume and power.
£229.50 per 6 bottles
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Le Petit Arlot
Drinking 2017 - 2022
This cuvée from young vines in the Clos de l’Arlot is getting better every year, as the young vines become less and less young (now around 15 years old) and the fruit more and more intense. Round, fresh, juicy with a decent tannic structure, this is much, much more than a “Baby Clos de l’Arlot”, instead a serious wine in its own right.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St-Georges The Clos des Forêts St-Georges is unique in Burgundy in that it occupies the entire hillside. Crafted from a blend of fruit from three plots at the bottom, top and in the middle of the slope, it shows great richness of dark, intense fruit, impressive energy, vibrancy and a great tannic structure. A fabulous example of Nuits-St-Georges.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots ** Les Suchots is deservedly recognised as one of the very best 1er Crus in Vosne-Romanée, in a good year on a par with the Grands Crus. The 2013 from Domaine de l’Arlot is particularly impressive for its layered, silky texture, a core of red yet ripe fruit, raspberries and morello cherries, and superb, expansive aromatics. The structure is tight and firm, and this should happily age for the next 20+ years. Wonderful stuff!

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Aurélien Verdet Born in 1981, Aurélien owns 5.5 hectares of vineyards which he farms organically. Practicing intelligent, gentle winemaking, this is a young vigneron who spends most of his time in the vineyards, producing from this hallowed ground genuinely exciting wines of great purity and soul. For Aurélien, the 2012s were a real turning point, making him a winemaker to watch very closely. For the time being at least, his wines offer incredible value for money.
Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Le Prieuré Aurélien's Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is an absolutely delicious rendition of fruity Pinot Noir; juicy, crunchy berries on the well-polished core of fruit with a really lovely freshness on the finish - so moreish, a perfect example of what Burgundians call a Vin Gourmand!
Vosne-Romanée Aurélien's Vosne was our revelation of the vintage last year, with a beautiful perfume and purity that belied its (for now) humble origins. This year we were reassured that the quality is entirely due to Aurélien's excellent work in the vineyards and careful winemaking. There is no way this name will remain unknown, and we recommend following Aurélien's work, starting with this silky, juicy and superbly pure Vosne.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes Situated just above Aux Boudots, on the Vosne-Romanée side of NuitsSt-Georges, les Damodes shows a very intense core of black fruit with a hint of dried cranberries. Powerful with a very mineral edge to the long finish and a savoury, almost truffle character, this is complex, classy and precise.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots Rich, dark and powerful with a strong tannic structure, this would appear to have all the hallmarks of a good 1er Cru Nuits. Aux Boudots, however, is situated next to Malconsorts on the Vosne side, adding a superb minerality and silky polish to the powerful fruit. Absolutely stunning and one of the best wines we tasted all week, none of its peers are this reasonably priced...
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts An excellently positioned vineyard above Les Suchots and between Richebourg and Echézeaux, Aurélien's Les Beaux Monts is a perfumed, richly fruited yet relatively delicate 1er Cru, with good ageing potential thanks to its mineral streak. The texture is beautifully silky, and the wine simply superb.

Domaine Jean-Marc Millot The modest Jean-Marc Millot is a man who lets his wines do the talking, and with wines of such quality he can certainly afford to. A relative newcomer, having only started the Domaine in 1992 and acquired many of his Grand Cru parcels in 1997, his diligence and gentleness of touch creates wines that are the very height of elegance and finesse. Unassuming yet overwhelmingly charming, this is a perfect example of the wines reflecting the maker (or vice versa!)

Vosne-Romanée
Drinking 2017 - 2022
Grapes grown from the plots of Les Violettes and Haut-Maizières go into this village level cuvée. A wonderful perfume of violets draws you in, whilst the palate displays itself in soft, seductive layers of plum and blueberry fruit held together by an elegant yet firm structure.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots This is wonderfully aromatic, with expressive aromas of flowers and crushed black pepper that need a little coaxing from the glass at this stage. A dense core of pure fruit, concentrated and powerful with a mineral framework, the finish is long and lingering.

You could almost get lost in the alluring and heady aromas, exotic and perfumed. Rich, ripe fruit, dense and concentrated forms a ball of immense power fused together with fine grained tannins. This needs plenty of time to unfurl and unwind into the magnificent Grand Cru it shall become.
Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru Jean-Marc told us there are just two barrels made for 2013, and no new oak. An incredible perfume of bramble fruits, pure and elegant and just a hint of oriental spice, the palate is a wonderful mix of red and black fruits with hints of mocha and chocolate. Opulent, intense and totally seductive.

Chambolle-Musigny An excellent Chambolle and another example of a wine from this Domaine that tastes as though it ought to be of a higher quality designation. Drinking 2017 - 2026
With perfumed redcurrants and expensive oak on the nose, this is a wine of excellent intensity with clarity and transparency of fruit that stains the entire palate with flavour, giving focus and constraint by the fine grained tannin. A graceful, airy and very fine Chaumes.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots ** Les Suchots understandably has an almost unrivalled reputation amongst Burgundy 1ers Crus, and once again Charles demonstrates his ability to allow a fantastic terroir to shine through in his wonderful wines. One of the best Suchots you will find.
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru The Domaine's vines within this large Grand Cru are ideally sited towards the top, adjacent to Echézeaux, and understandably this is one of the best wines coming from the vineyard. Intensely aromatic and concentrated, a wine of volume, tannin and a sense of restrained power.

Domaine du Clos Frantin One of many estates under the ownership of Domaine Bichot, the current Managing Director, Albéric produces wines of great depth and character from superb vineyards on the Côte de Nuits under the title of Clos Frantin. These wines have been transformed over the last five years, and now rival the very best that the Côte de Nuits has to offer. Their vineyard holdings are like a dream that the wines now turn into reality.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Malconsorts ** Intense, fresh, vibrant yet with a richness and depth normally reserved for Grand Crus, this is a terrific example, from a large parcel of 40 year old vines in this jewel of a vineyard. Notes of raspberry, herbs and sour cherry with a touch of toasty oak.
Echézeaux Grand Cru From the lieu-dit of 'Champs Traversins' the soil is stony limestone and wonderfully exposed to the sun. Racy yet exotic with huge complexity, there are notes of wild strawberry, tar and lavender. This is amongst the very finest examples from this Grand Cru vineyard.
Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru Fresher and perhaps finer than the Echezeaux, the soils are shallower here giving more acidity and length. You can only imagine how the alluring nose will develop in time. With notes of wet slate, redcurrant and darker brooding fruits and a precise yet mouth-filling palate, this is a glorious expression of Pinot Noir.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Since Sébastien Cathiard took over from his much-respected father, the wines from the brand new and hugely impressive cellar in Vosne have reached even greater heights than under Sylvain, a man revered as one of the Côte d'Or's finest winemakers. The secret to such success is simple: hard work and a meticulous approach to the vineyard and the winery. The fruit, predominantly from old vines, is sorted twice, whilst the attention to detail in the winery creates ethereal wines of balance and restrained power. To taste these wines is truly a privilege.
Bourgogne Rouge **
Drinking 2017 - 2022
The best Bourgogne Rouge we buy? This could only be from one village. Concentrated yet silky and refined, this is Vosne in all but name.

Vosne-Romanée **
Drinking 2018 - 2024
I recently enjoyed a bottled of 1999 which still had years ahead of it. The 2013 has massive concentration for a wine at this level in this vintage, layers of luxurious red fruits with carefully moulded structure and new oak with a fresh, uplifting finish.

Sébastien Cathiard
Chambolle-Musigny Les Clos de l'Orme **
Drinking 2018 - 2024
Made from 70 year old vines, this has an alluring lifted and spicy nose with great freshness and energy on the palate. Layers of raspberry and red cherry make this a very exciting wine.
£200+ per 6 bottles
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Thorey **
Drinking 2018 - 2026
Quite a feminine style of Nuits with an alluringly floral nose in tandem with crystalline red fruits and a firm yet integrated structure. Fresh but still very Cathiard, Sebastien says that this is the cuvée he is happiest with in 2013.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers ** The vines in Cathiard's tranche of this great vineyard were planted in the year Sylvain was born, and make my favourite wine in the cellar (Malconsorts excluded). Rich in mineral infused black fruit with enormous depth of flavour, this is one for the long haul.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots ** Huge depth and exuberance from this great little 1er Cru which watches over the Grand Cru of La Romanee. Lifted and spicy with sleeker fruit from slightly higher up the hill, it seems to have everything in perfect harmony already, and will be incredibly tough to resist.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux ** Concentrated and tight at the moment with plenty of tannin for the vintage. The palate has crème de mure and some almost tarry notes. At this moment it feels unresolved and in need of more time, but there is huge potential under there.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts ** A very different expression from the other Vosne 1er Crus in the cellar, this is darker and more masculine with notes of graphite and cassis entwined with wild herbs. It has soaked up all that new oak leaving a driven wine of great potential; quite possibly one of the wines of the vintage.
Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru ** From a tiny production this was surprisingly open on the day we tasted. Huge complexity and taffeta like structure, to call it sexy would be vulgar, but you know what I mean! Cathiard’s only Grand Cru, it is increasingly hard to find anywhere.

Domaine Jean Grivot Etienne Grivot is one of Burgundy's great characters, and is a man driven by a desire to produce fine, ageworthy wines that perfectly demonstrate each vineyard's unique terroir. Already considered one of the region's leading lights, Etienne's winemaking continues to be refined, and to improve. His Clos de Vougeot is a case in point: every year that we taste it becomes more and more elegant, refined and full of finesse. That said, an '02 tasted in the cellar this year was pretty spectacular.
Coteaux Bourguignons Very old Gamay vines produce this exceptional cuvée, which ages as well as most 1er Cru Pinot based wines. Wild strawberry, rose and a hint of blood orange notes abounding, this is dense and rich: a smart buy which would fool most in a blind taste.
Vosne-Romanée Dense and spicy in 2013 with lots of potential for a village wine. Only 11 barrels were made in 2013, this is surely one of the best Vosnes out there. Cassis and lavender with a glossy upmarket feel, this has bags of personality.
Nuits-St-Georges Les Lavières This was wonderfully open, juicy and easy to taste with notes of plum, raspberry and cinnamon. The grippy tannins and substantial weight make this a great buy, and a fantastic introduction to the Grivot range. This is one of my favourite cuvées here.
Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveaux Coming from a cooler site lying at the entrance to a valley, this is a much underrated vineyard, some of which is premier cru. There is an abundance of crunchy red fruit and lots of lovely floral notes, giving a pure Pinot character with Grivot's (now) trademark supple tannins.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers A southern NSG 1er Cru in the hands of one of the Vosne's masters makes a brilliant combination. Combining darker fruit and mineral notes, the frame of this wine is obvious yet extraction has been meticulously controlled. Etienne had a new de-stemmer for this vintage which (he says) has really helped this wine. Those who miss out on 1er Cru Vosne from Grivot should not hesitate in buying this.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Jean Grivot continued
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
Drinking 2018 - 2028
My favourite 1er Cru Chez Grivot, this great vineyard produces a leaner, more mineral version of Richebourg. Blackberry jam and graphite combine with a fine structure to give a wine of great breeding and elegance.
£597 per 6 bottles
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
Drinking 2019 - 2027
Undoubtedly the most improved wine in the cellar here, this is now one of the finest Clos de Vougeots around. Whilst the tannins are less burly and the fruit more expressive, powerful and concentrated, it remains wonderfully light on its feet. This is Grand Cru quality without a shadow of a doubt.
£699 per 6 bottles
Drinking 2019 - 2029
Echézeaux Grand Cru Always the richest and most exotic wine in the Grivot cellar, 2013 doesn't disappoint. With notes of kirsch and crushed raspberry, the palate has an unctuous texture yet a tight frame. With a bit more tannin here, it will need 10+ years to reveal all.
Richebourg Grand Cru ** Etienne's Richebourg is slowly becoming one of the most desirable wines in the Côte de Nuits. Understandable: seeming to have more of everything, yet retaining an overwhelming harmony, it is seriously impressive.

Drinking 2019 - 2030 £1698 per 3 bottles
Domaine Michel Gros Michel Gros has been rightfully praised for the quality of his wines on the international stage, and remains best know for his Monopole, Clos des Réas, in the centre of Vosne-Romanée. However, he should not be seen as a one vineyard man. More interventionist in the cellar that some of his peers, Michel's are wines, from his Hautes-Côtes de Nuits through to his Clos de Vougeot, that seemlessly display terroir alongside a voluptuousness of texture and a richness of fruit.
Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits
Drinking 2016 - 2020
Very pretty bouquet of floral notes and red cherries. Mouth-filling with a burst of freshness, with tannins firmly taking hold and then gradually fading away, this is an impressive Hautes-Côtes de Nuits.
£100+ per 12 bottles
Nuits-St-Georges
Drinking 2017 - 2021
Made from a blend of four different parcels, the wine has a very attractive nose of summer fruits. The palate, however, has a somewhat different fruit profile with darker, autumnal berries. A silky texture with refined tannins and a pure coolness of fruit lingers gracefully.

Chambolle-Musigny
Drinking 2017 - 2021

Morey-Saint-Denis En la Rue de Vergy

Nuits-St-Georges Chaliots
Drinking 2017 - 2021
Michel makes this wine separate to the village level Nuits due to differing soil types - and we're glad that he does. Fruit forward on the nose, heady and alluring, on the palate red cherry and plum, concentrated and pure, encased within velvet tannins. Very precise and well-made, you could be forgiven for thinking that this was more than a simple village wine.
Vosne-Romanée Fantastically full aromas of rich ripe fruit makes this a very appealing nose. On the palate there is a perfect balance of weight and structure. Wonderful ripe morello cherry and plums framed by poise and power with silky tannins concluded with a little spice hit on the finish. Delightful.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru This 1er Cru comes from grapes grown at two plots, Aux Vignerondes and Aux Murgers. For 2013 just four barrels have been made. The nose transports you to hedgerows with blackberries warmed in the late autumn sun. The tannins are big and plush, perfectly matched with the ripe fruit leaving a mouthwatering freshness to the mammoth finish.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos de Réas Wonderful dusky fruit aromas entwined with violet notes enticingly lure you in. The palate is textured, balanced and sublime with layers of pure fruit first, then minerality. The tannins are silky and work in perfect harmony with the refreshing acidity, leading into a bright finish.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brulées Fragrant and aromatic with hints of violet coming through, Michel mentioned that there is very little soil at this plot possibly due to fires that once burnt there (hence the name, I suppose). A tightly wound ball of concentration with chalky tannins and plenty of energy, this will need plenty of time to reveal all.
Clos de Vougeot For 2013 about 20% of the fruit was lost through rot, meaning that the healthy berries were small and very concentrated. The result is an alluring perfume of ripe fruits and a floral character, with a velvet texture, rich fruits, hints of mocha, chocolate and a touch of aniseed on the finish. Complexity flows through the structure of this wine. Outstanding.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine François Lamarche Lamarche is one of the great Domaines of Vosne-Romanée, and of Burgundy itself. Best known for the narrow Monopole La Grande Rue, perfectly situated between La Romanée Conti and La Tâche, their total holdings of 8ha include some of the world's most sought after vineyards. Now run by the 6th generation of the Lamarche family, with cousins Nathalie and Nicole at the helm, they are in the process of converting to fully biodynamic production, and the quality of the wines is, with every year that passes, becoming more consistent and more superlative (and they weren't bad in the first place).

Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits
Drinking 2017 - 2020
The excellent freshness on the palate is supported with fresh, crunchy red fruit, which drives this wine forward with vibrancy and vivacity.

Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Cras
Drinking 2018 - 2028
The fruit on this is, as is to be expected, of a darker profile, with that enticing Nuits minerality. As is so often the case, a Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru from the Vosne side of Nuits, in the hands of a Vosne producer really produces the goods.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots The nose on this, from a vineyard bordered by Grands Crus on both sides, is pleasantly savoury, with delightful spice in the background. A crunchy palate is dominated initially with lift, together with those savoury notes continuing on from the nose, before a swathe of spice wraps itself around the mouth, lasting well onto the finish.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Malconsorts
Drinking 2018 - 2028
An aromatic, floral nose from one of Burgundy's highest regarded 1er crus. There is a delightful freshness and an ample, voluptuous mouthfeel. With a lovely use of oak, this is a really excellent Malconsorts.

Echézeaux Grand Cru

Slightly reduced when tasted, there remained a richness to the red fruit profile, with concentration on the palate and great freshness which hold the voluptuousness in check. There is great potential here.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
Drinking 2019 - 2030
From the favoured north-west side of the Clos, this is a refined yet powerful demonstration of Clos de Vougeot. This famed vineyard seems to be improving in quality in many producer's stables, and this is certainly no exception. Great power yet poise, this is great Clos de Vougeot example.
La Grande Rue Grand Cru When driving through the Grands Crus of Vosne, you can't help wondering why they haven't planted vines on the roads, given the price of land. That is even more the case if this is what happens when you plant on a 'rue'! This monopole is defined by freshness this year, with fantastic concentration. As good as ever.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Domaine Méo-Camuzet A producer which can have its own name overshadowed by the connection with Henri Jayer, Méo Camuzet only started bottling their own wines in 1985. Under the leadership of Jean-Nicolas Méo since the end of the 1980s, the wines produced are polished, rich and hedonistic. In a year such as 2013, with its added freshness and lift, this philosophy and style has really worked, making this an incredibly enjoyable vintage for Méo Camuzet.
Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Blanc Clos Philibert Quite tropical in style with freshness and good balance, the fruit is almost melon in character. The finish is tropical, with lemon and lime, all held together with a mineral edge.
Marsannay If this Marsannay is not the best value red Burgundy in our range, it must be right up there. Raspberry, blackberry and a hint of chocolate overlay a distinctly mineral edge, with a fine texture, good balance and a very decent length.
Fixin 1er Cru Clos du Chapitre This is the best Fixin we know. The bouquet is just outrageous, with crushed raspberry and violets positively exploding from the glass. The palate shows stunning, rich fruit, but what sets the wine apart is the sense of lift given by fine acidity. Fixin, but not as we know it.
Gevrey-Chambertin A more charming and elegant Gevrey-Chambertin, you would struggle to find. This shows much more in the way of red fruit, with raspberry and cranberry combining with a hint of pepper and a touch of oak spice. Certainly approachable from the off, but has the stuffing and balance for mid-term cellaring.
Chambolle-Musigny This is a seriously attractive Chambolle boasting glorious floral aromatics, brilliant fruit concentration and supreme balance. Méo Camuzet hallmark richness, sprinkled with a touch of 2013 freshness, makes a very well balanced and seductive wine.
Vosne-Romanée This wine pretty much encapsulates the Méo-Camuzet house style: rich fruit and an amazing glossy texture combine to give hedonistic joy in a glass. It is really well judged, with acidity keeping the palate fresh and lending a sense of vivacity.
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru aux Murgers For 2013 this is a bit of a bruiser, but has such potential. There is a ripe core of dark plummy fruit, a lovely earthy tone and classic Nuits minerality. Though a big wine, it has a very natural feel; nothing is over worked and all components are perfectly balanced. An excellent example of Nuits-St-Georges from one of the finest vineyards.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Méo-Camuzet continued
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru aux Boudots Situated next to Vosne’s famous Malconsorts, Aux Boudots produces a sensual, even pretty style of Nuits-St-Georges. It has the power that you would expect of a great Nuits, but with a floral delicacy and more red fruited character. This is a stunning wine which shows all the great qualities of the vintage - pure fruit, freshness, energy and balance.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Chaumes Les Chaumes traditionally produces quite a dense expression of Vosne, sometimes lacking finesse. That is certainly not the case here; alongside concentration there is real elegance. Pure fruit flavours of raspberry, plum and strawberry are counter-balanced by perfectly pitched acidity and velvety tannins.
Corton Les Perrières Grand Cru Les Perrières is one of the best plots on the hill of Corton, producing aromatic wines of both grace and power. The nose is very pretty, with gorgeous notes of strawberry, raspberry and an earthiness, but the palate is much more serious. Hugely concentrated, with ripe fruit and spice, massive tannins and plenty of dry extract, all underpinned by refreshing acidity. This wine will handsomely reward those with patience.

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Sisters Marie-Andrée and Marie-Christine have continued with the philosophy of their father, Georges Mugneret, but have, alongside this, gently modernised the winery and their methods. The results have been spectacular: the lightness of touch and care given to these wines results in examples that are amongst the finest demonstrations of terroir in Burgundy. What's more, they are always a pleasure to taste in the sisters' delightful company. As every year with this Domaine, we were blown away.

Maison Roche de Bellene Nicolas Potel is one of Burgundy's great characters: a man of charm and wit, it is through his fantastic connections that he is able to get hold of the superb musts and fruit for his negociant business, Maison Roche de Bellene. It is an undoubtedly difficult time to be a negociant in Burgundy, with crazy-high prices for fruit and must. However, Nicolas makes wines from a wonderful array of vineyards, each of which demonstrates terroir in a truly incredible way whilst still demonstrating some of his own lively and energetic character.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Chambertin Grand Cru With a core of rich fruit and a slight savoury note, this has a silky, generous mouthfeel with alluring spice and fantastic power. At this stage a bit of a monster, mark my words: the beast will become the beauty!

Domaine Georges Noëllat Maxime Cheurlin, the winemaker here, was born in 1991 - a forgotten vintage of surprising quality, his Grandmother tells him. It was from his Grandmother that Maxime has gained his vineyards, including some real gems with Vosne 1ers Crus and Grands Crus. The quality of his wines belie his youth, with elegance, power and concentration in spades. I would say that Maxime is one to watch, but the popularity of his wines demonstrates that many people already are well aware of his pedigree.
Vosne-Romanée Maxime's village vines are perfectly situated, and at 70 years old they produce wines of, in my eyes, 1er Cru quality. Vibrant with notes of wild blueberry and cherry, there are silky Vosne tannins and plenty of acidity to balance: This may well be better than 2012.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots In my book this is pound for pound the best cuvée in the winery. A plot right in the heart of a great Vosne-influenced vineyard with very old vines that have been lovingly tended over the years + subtle winemaking = something very special.
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Petits Monts ** This tiny and so rarely seen 1er Cru sits just above Richebourg, producing ethereal wines which captivate all the senses. Floral with a cooler feel, it has great precision and a wonderful harmony of flavour and structure. This is epic Pinot: a bottle of 2011 enjoyed Maxime's conservatory was superb.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Felletig Brother and sister team Gilbert and Christine Felletig have continued on from their father, Henri's, good work, and now produce excellent value wines from 12ha of vines on the Côte de Nuits. With a superb selection of parcels in Chambolle, their commitment to quality is demonstrated equally in their excellent village wine, and their well-placed Premiers Crus.

Chambolle-Musigny Clos le Village
Drinking 2017 - 2022
From a well-situated, sunny plot within the Clos le Village, this is a beautifully aromatic and floral Chambolle with excellent intensity courtesy of old vines with limited yields.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Combottes
Drinking 2018 - 2028
The purity and vibrancy of fruit that is the calling card of Gilbert’s wines serves the beautiful old-vine fruit from Les Combottes very well indeed. Spicy, mineral, full bodied and powerful, considering the only two other producers who own a parcel of Les Combottes are Ghislaine Barthod and Christophe Roumier, this is by far the cheapest Combottes available on the market. It certainly stands up to its illustrious cousins!
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Carrières Les Carrières is a stony site that endows its wines with an impressive minerality, tautness and precision matched by a ripe core of fruit. This is a serious wine that should develop an impressive complexity when mature; it will need to be left alone for a little while to flesh out, however.
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes The vines here are 60 years old and produce superb quality fruit, with juicy cherries dominating a palate that is less exuberantly perfumed than the other wines from the Domaine, but does display much more power and intensity of fruit. The delicate tannins and velvety texture bring a lovely elegance to the powerful core of fruit.

Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Whilst Louis Boillot and Ghislaine Barthod share a vineyard team, both following the principles of Lutte Raisonée, the winemaking and commercial aspects of their businesses are kept entirely separate. Chambolle is often revered as producing Burgundy's prettiest wines, and in Ghislaine's hands these wines reach new heights of attractiveness and refinement. To taste these sensuous, seductive wines is a real pleasure.
Bourgogne Rouge Always one of the best Bourgognes you can buy, this is simply delicious. Aromatic, incredibly pretty and with surprising concentration for a Bourgogne. The fruit is so pure and the balance so effortless, it is a joy to behold.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Chambolle-Musigny Produced from vines with a minimum age of 50 years, this is a seriously impressive village wine. The palate greets you with gorgeously ripe fruit overlaying a mineral background. The fine tannins and backbone of acidity perfectly support the fruit, giving a wine of grace and beauty.
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras ** Not a wine that needs selling, but 2013 Les Cras is really quite sensational. It is presently the most tight and unyielding of Ghislaine's wines, but it is supremely well balanced and very fine. Dense, rich, layered fruit, but so fresh and with such a sense of energy, this shows just what a special winemaker Ghislaine Barthod is.
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Combottes ** This tiny plot, just under the village of Chambolle, produces wines of wonderful elegance. In the hands of Ghislaine Chambolle prettiness is taken to a whole new level, with depth of flavour, subtlety and complexity. A delight.

Domaine Taupenot-Merme Romain Taupenot is a delight to taste with. An erudite and articulate man, he and his sister Virginie are the seventh generation to be winemaking in the area, and under their leadership the estate has gone from strength to strength. They are one of the very few producers to bottle Charmes and Mazoyères separately, such is their commitment to demonstrating every slight change in terroir: tasting the 2013s was a fantastic lesson in terroir definition and differentiation.
Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Maison Roche Domaine Taupenot-Merme de Bellene continued
Morey-Saint-Denis This is an excellent example of how a Morey-Saint-Denis should taste. It has slightly more weight than the Chambolle, with more tannic structure and spice. Although it will need time, it is rare to see this level of concentration and quality in a village wine.
Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte Having been blown away by the village Morey, this somehow manages to be a serious step up in quality. The concentration is spectacular, the quality and purity of the fruit is sensational. You could easily be tricked into drinking this wine too young due to its vibrancy, but make no mistake, there is the structure for the long haul.
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Bel-Air Bel-Air sits just above Le Chambertin and is the only vineyard to come in direct contact with the famed vineyard not to be classified as Grand Cru. The altitude of the vineyard gives a coolness to the fruit and a crystalline purity to the wine. This is an amazingly well defined, chiselled Gevrey-Chambertin that is the very definition of refinement.
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d'Orveau La Combe d’Orveau neighbours the great Musigny vineyard so it is no surprise that this is so good. It is one of the most expressive and exotic wines tasted all week and is the epitome of everything a good Chambolle-Musigny should be. Gloriously aromatic, stunningly pure fruit, the most charming and sensual wine you could imagine.
Corton Rognet Grand Cru Displaying superb fruit concentration and beautiful aromatics, this is one of the more elegant Cortons you are likely to come across. There is plenty of structure, but fruit is definitely winning the race, with silky tannins playing a supporting rather than leading role and acidity providing perfect balance.
Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Taupenot-Merme’s Charmes-Chambertin is one of the best examples that we know of, fully warranting its Grand Cru classification, showing the richness and the density you would expect. It seems to be used a lot this vintage, but vivid is definitely the word to describe the fruit quality. A joy to taste, it will go on to be a very special wine.
Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru It is unusual for a single Domaine to have separate bottlings of Charmes and Mazoyères-Chambertin, but it is easy to see why Taupenot-Merme choose to do so. The character is so different here, a more extroverted style of wine. I hesitate to use the word, but there is no other way to describe this wine than sexy. This wine just has it all - glorious fruit, plush texture, balance and complexity. It is all out on show and is dropdead gorgeous.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Domaine Arlaud The team at Arlaud, siblings Cyprien, Romain and Bertille, and horses Nougat and Oka, farm some 15ha of vineyards biodynamically throughout the Côte de Nuits. The estate was founded in the years after WW2 by Joseph Arlaud, and the modern philosophy of the estate continues to hark back to its roots. Indeed, more and more emphasis is being put on creating refined and elegant classic Burgundies, rather than the big and bold wines for which the estate had become known.
Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Aux Cheseaux Wonderful aromatics of bramble fruits and hedgerows, alongside a slight savoury note. On the palate sweet ripe fruit, delicate tannins and a wonderful freshness, this is high-toned, clean and precise. Cyprien commented, "They are aromatic. I like the aromatics, if I can catch it in the bottle it will be perfect".
Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru One third whole bunch pressing is used for this cuvée, which has a light floral fragrance, offering a charming glimpse of the power in the glass. A mass of concentrated fruit and layers of minerality interwoven with acidity, the intensity that builds up is immense. A stunning and serious wine with a finish that feels like it will last forever.

Domaine des Lambrays Thierry Brouin has been at the helm of this impressive domaine for over 30 years, and his expertise in the virtual monopole Clos des Lambrays is surely unrivalled. Purchased this year by LVMH, Thierry has been convinced to stay on for a few more years to oversee the handover to his successor, and as of yet there has been little sign of the takeover of this historic Domaine. Tasting the wines, you are reminded of what made the estate such an enticing proposition: rich, alluring and voluptuous, these are wines of excellent breeding and depth.
Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Les Loups This 1er Cru comes from two different sites, La Riotte and Le Village, both right in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis. A raspberry nose with some spice, framed by a delightful structure, this is already tasting fantastic.
Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru Although not quite a Monopole (Romain Taupenot owns a small section), the eponymous vineyard is of course the feather in this Domaine's cap. This is perfumed, slightly savoury, fresh, long and concentrated. In short, up to scratch!

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Bruno Clair When Bruno Clair took the helm of the estate in the mid 1980s, it was in disarray. Some of the prized vineyards had been sold off, whilst other contracts with negociants would have many years to run. From this confusion, Bruno has created a well-organised and successful estate, now with 24ha of vines in some 24 different vineyards. With a commitment to quality that rests on rigorous sorting and a sensible use of new oak, Bruno's wines are now some of Burgundy's most consistent.
Morey St. Denis Blanc En la Rue de Vergy White Morey is rarely seen, but with examples like this we can’t understand why. Pithy with an exotic element, there is great concentration married to vibrant acidity and intelligent use of oak. This is a fabulous Côte de Nuits white.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Domaine Faiveley Known for almost unrivalled richness and concentration, Faiveley should be thought of as so much more than a simple Negociant. A Domaine with a fantastic history, stretching back to 1825, in recent years they have upped their game to a whole new level, expanding their vineyard holdings considerably and producing wines from incredible parcels of superb vineyards that rival the very best.
Mercurey La Framboisière Faiveley have just built a state of the art winery in Mercurey where they have significant vineyard holdings: they truly believe in the potential of this village. Unsurprisingly this sings of raspberry fruit allied to violet and wild strawberry: juicy and vibrant, this is just how I like my Pinot.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Porets Saints Georges This was the first vineyard the Faiveleys bought, and sits right in the middle of Nuits-St-Georges. Spicy and compelling on the nose with notes of black cherry and iron filings, the palate is rich yet firm with great potential.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Humbert Frères Recently photographed dining boisterously with François Hollande, and proud owners of a Ferrari branded tractor, the Humbert brothers are amongst Burgundy's biggest characters. These wines seem to improve year on year, as Frédéric becomes more and more content in his vineyard work and Manou becomes more and more at home in the winery, roles that they only swapped into 10 years or so ago. It is fortunate for us that they did, as every year they reach new heights.
Fixin This wine shows the polished side of Fixin made, as Manou Humbert describes it, to be delicious and enjoyable with charcuterie and bread (which, trust me, it is). Supple fruit with good concentration, this is defined by character and balance.
Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Perfumed red fruits with a touch of expensive French oak leads to a richness of red fruits on the palate – redcurrants, strawberry and raspberry with a freshness and vitality. The old vines are evident in the texture and density of flavour of this wine.
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenots Pure-scented fruit with the warmth of a touch of new oak. A finely balanced palate combining the fullsome Gevrey character of weight and structure with bright fruit of superb clarity and a long finish, Manou considers this his flagship wine: it more than meets this designation.
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle The Petite Chapelle vineyard always gives an elegant style, evident here. It has a scented palate with a silky transparent purity. Mineral and linear with a very fine grip of tannin and an overall finesse within the Gevrey stature, this typically delightful.
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St-Jacques Black and redcurrants to the fore with a fruit sweetness on the palate, balanced with fine grippy tannin alongside density and precision, this is seamless in its presentation. A very good vineyard, old vines and the detailed excellence of Manou and Frédéric have created a benchmark Gevrey.

Domaine Denis Mortet Arnaud Mortet took over from his father following his death in 2006, and since then his philosophy of 'vineyard first' seems to jump from success to success. Arnaud treats every wine, whether that be a village wine or a Grand Cru, with the same diligence and affection, and the results are truly outstanding. In the years to come he will surely be seen as one of Burgundy's greats - so it's worth getting in there whilst you have the chance!

Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs
Drinking 2017 - 2022
This was possibly the best village wine we tasted in the Côte de Nuits. Highly charged notes of bramble fruit and black pepper, the palate is dense with great poise, freshness and a long mineral finish. This oak is already beautifully integrated; this is superb.
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru This wine comes from 4 tiny parcels of 1er Cru, including Bel Air and Petite Chapelle. Spicy and aromatic on the nose with notes of rose and crushed pepper, the palate is suave with crunchy red fruit and beautifully judged extraction and oak.
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St-Jacques Lavaux is a cooler site and gives floral, chiselled wines which age beautifully. This is a cracking example produced from 5 separate parcels, which gives a true representation of this top Gevrey vineyard, and that will put on weight in the bottle.

Wines from Burgundy - Côte d’Or
Domaine Rossignol-Trapet Converted to biodynamism in 2004, Nicolas and David, who have run this estate founded by the intermarriage of the Rossignols of Volnay and the Trapets of Gevrey since 1990, are champions of minimal intervention, from vineyard to winery. The wines that result are elegant and refined, and possess a wonderful purity, reflective of their fantastic terroirs.
Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes It may be a function of their biodynamic vine-growing, but Rossignol-Trapet’s Gevrey always seems to have a delicious purity of fruit and freshness, making it a more elegant style of Gevrey than elsewhere. This vintage follows the pattern with raspberry liqueur on the mid-palate, perfectly balanced by tight, fruit-coated tannins and excellent length.
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle Over the ages La Petite Chapelle has built a solid reputation as one of the very best premiers crus in this star-studded village. The way this builds up in power, intensity and volume after the initial juicy cherry fruit will surely add to the legend. That power and a superbly melded yet grippy tannic structure will stand this wine in a very good stead for the longer haul.
Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru ** Sweet, fresh yet silky, Latricières is the most seductive of the Grands Crus from Rossignol-Trapet. A great purity of raspberry fruit drives the wine forward, whilst there is just a hint of white chocolate on the finish. The tannic structure is very fine-grained with plenty of firmness that should allow this wine to age gracefully for many years to come.
Chambertin Grand Cru ** We should start with David Rossignol’s opinion: “Le Chambertin is quite simply the most complete Burgundy wine”. Powerful and voluminous yet with elegance and complexity, it is the closest to being “all things to all people” as one can get in the highly subjective world of wine. This spectacular cuvée has a place in any cellar!

Domaine Duroché Gevrey-based Duroché is run by father son team, Gilles and Pierre. With a fantastic collection of wines, including three prestigious Grands Crus, Duroché has got to be one of the most exciting producers that we offer. They are clear in their philosophy: they seek to produce wines that demonstrate terroir through refinement and precision. Any tasting of their wines is enough to convince you that they are completely successful in doing so.
Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Etelois Bordering Charmes-Chambertin and Griotte-Chambertin, this is a village level vineyard with a difference. With concentration on the nose, freshness and richness and a delightful backbone of spice, this is 1er Cru quality. It is, therefore, superb value for money.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles St Jacques
Drinking 2018 - 2028
From 33 year old vines, this a richer style of wine from Duroché. The nose is pretty, with spice from the new oak, whilst the concentration on the palate continues into the long, drawn out finish. This is a classy wine, with oodles of character.
Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vines planted in 1959 are really coming into their own, with the nose immediately offering up concentration, complexity and meatiness. With supple tannins throughout, wonderful complexity and an enticing structure, this is what Grand Cru Gevrey is all about.

Wines from Burgundy - Late Releases
2012 Late Releases Domaine des Comtes Lafon Arguably the pinnacle of White Burgundy, and certainly of Meursault, Comtes Lafon has some of the best located vines on the Côte de Beaune, not only in all the best vineyards of Meursault, but also superbly located within these vineyards. Dominique Lafon has been at the helm since 1985, and in this time he has confirmed the quality of the Domaine, whilst improving its consistency. Whether the village wines or the 1ers Crus, these are wines of mindblowing intensity, incredible focus, and yet remarkably restrained: each wine is totally unique!
2012 Meursault Clos de la Barre ** Softer with more fruit than their other wines, this is classic Lafon in the vintage – hard to describe but absolutely on the money. With great balance and breeding, it is easily 1er Cru quality, and the rest. Dominique thinks this is one of his finest ever Clos.
2012 1er Cru Meursault Porusot de Milieu ** An enticing nose of anise, crème brulée and preserved lemon, this is precise yet rich with layers of texture and flavour. Drinking 2017 - 2024
A new vineyard to the range here, which pretty much completes the set of 1er Cru Meursault. Smoky and reductive with hints of toast and crushed chalk, the palate is dense and fresh with great vibrancy: a great acquisition.

2012 1er Cru Meursault Charmes **
Drinking 2018 - 2025
On the Puligny border yet giving generous and rich wines, the 2012 is built for the long haul. Huge concentration of white stone fruit and crushed mineral with a touch of engine oil. Bulky yet refined, wait for this.

2012 1er Cru Meursault Perrières **
Drinking 2019 - 2026
There is little doubt that in Dominique’s hands this vineyard produces one of the best white wines in Burgundy. Smoky, reductive and brooding with aeration there are notes of citrus and nut oil, the palate is effortlessly concentrated. A truly great wine.

2012 1er Cru Monthelie Les Duresses **
Drinking 2017 - 2022
Real Pinot Noir with complexity and a croquant juiciness. The mouthfeel is generous, whilst the slight earthiness adds interest, this demonstrates that you pigeon-hole Lafon as a white producer at your peril!

2012 1er Cru Volnay Santenots du Milieu **
Drinking 2018 - 2030
One of the finest wines in Volnay and now as desirable as the whites, the yields were eye watering thanks to hail damage but the remaining wine is clean, concentrated and very fine. Bags of everything; pure silk.

Aged to perfection over 160 years - Lay & Wheeler 1854 - 2014
Domaine Armand Rousseau Founded at the turn of the last century as the result of a small inheritance, the wines of Armand-Rousseau are now undoubtedly some of the world's most prized. With some 14ha of vines, of which half is in Grands Crus, Armand-Rousseau has a simple, successful formula. Sensible yields from predominantly old vines, in fantastic locations, with traditional winemaking techniques, and a precision and excellence that you can absolutely taste, to try any one of these wines is a real delight and a privilege.
2012 Gevrey-Chambertin ** Made with fruit from 7 separate parcels in 2012, it has a delicacy and freshness at the moment and will no doubt put on weight in the bottle. Graceful raspberry fruit with hints of nutmeg and crushed pepper, and a long, lifted, juicy finish.
2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint Jacques ** This cooler 1er Cru is one of the last to be harvested Chez Rousseau, and the wines it gives are floral and aromatic; some of the most stylish in the village. Notes of violet and black truffle with cassis and some strawberry fruit lead onto a long palate cleaning finish.
2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques ** What is there to say that hasn't already been said! There are many similarities in profile to the Bèze, and this is easily Grand Cru quality with exotic red fruit and some liquorice (80% new oak). Dense, yet fresh and silky, yet powerful. This was a privilege to taste.

Fred (and Pinot the dog) at Armand Rousseau Drinking 2019 - 2032 £POA
Drinking 2018 - 2030
A very different profile to the other Grands Crus in the cellar, lean and quite tight with less new oak and flamboyance. Perhaps there was even a touch of Cornas about it? Earthy, red fruits with notes of coal and tar makes this a hugely interesting wine. The old bottles I have been fortunate enough to taste have been magnificent.
£POA
2012 Chambertin Clos de Bèze **
Drinking 2020 - 2035
A rich and flamboyant fruit character, North African spices with lashings of new oak and bound up with a tight mineral core of dark fruit, this is precise yet broad with so many facets. I can only imagine how thrilling a wine this will be.
2012 Chambertin Grand Cru ** Aristocratic and quite closed compared to its neighbour, this is savoury with tar and licorice notes, and a rigid frame which will need to loosen before all is revealed. Still, you already know what the fuss is all about!
