WHO WE ARE WHO WE ARE

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

LBIF STAFF

Dear LBIF Community,

Daniella Kerner Executive Director dkerner@lbifoundation.org

Welcome to the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences! We are so excited to be here for our 71st summer and to share a fun-filled summer of events, performances, and educational opportunities with the LBI community.

Christine Mesagna Office Manager cmesagna@lbifoundation.org

I am so proud to be President of this organization at this time. Like many non-profit arts organizations, the LBIF has had its share of challenges - but unlike many of these organizations, the LBIF has pulled through these challenges and emerged stronger.

Lydia Owens Marketing & Special Events lowens@lbifoundation.org

Part of the reason we have emerged stronger is credit to Daniella Kerner, our Executive Director, who has a 25 year history with the LBIF as an active volunteer and board member. She is bringing the Foundation to entirely new levels of achievement and stability. Another contributor to the strength and stability of the Foundation is our incoming President, Todd Strine. The Strine/Stein family has been one of the most actively involved families and largest supporters of the Foundation over their 40 year history with the Foundation. This family was responsible for the “renaissance” of the LBIF in the 90s when they raised $1,000,000 to renovate and update the main building, and then again four years ago when they drove the successful “Burn the Mortgage” campaign, which paid off all of the Foundation’s $200,000 accumulated debt. The Foundation is so fortunate to have such capable, caring, and committed leadership.

John M. Imperiale Business & Community Development jimperiale@lbifoundation.org Denise Petti Programming Coordinator dpetti@lbifoundation.org Lauren Proscia Camp Coordinator lproscia@lbifoundation.org Kathleen Ries Membership Development kries@lbifoundation.org Jeff Ruemeli Ceramics Studio Manager ceramics@lbifoundation.org Art Gallery gallery@lbifoundation.org

Financially, the Foundation is growing stronger each year. Our membership and revenues are up by $200,000 from where they were just five years ago and we operated at a small budget surplus last year. We still have some challenges with an aging building and anticipate much-needed capital improvements, but the Foundation is sustaining itself operationally, and even moving ahead! It’s a very exciting time here. As we approach the 75th anniversary of the LBIF, I am so optimistic about where we are headed and what we can do together. Thank you to all of our members for supporting our mission and allowing us to continue to serve LBI. If you are not a member, please consider joining. Your membership is what allows us to be here and to grow. Thank you for your support of the LBIF and we hope you enjoy your visit with us. Sincerely, DeBorah Brill, President

LBIF HISTORY & BORIS BLAI Founded in 1948 by Boris Blai, the LBIF is an outstanding community cultural facility. Dr. Blai, a student of sculptor Auguste Rodin and founding dean of the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, envisioned a facility that would foster individuals and their talents. The LBIF has continued this vision by offering thousands of classes, workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs to the community. Since its first season, the LBIF has committed itself to the enhancement of the creative arts and the physical sciences, and though it began as a seasonal operation, the LBIF has grown into a year-round organization providing a place for learning, free expression, and the exchange of ideas and understanding.

71 YEARS & GOING STRONG “Boris Blai was born in 1893 in Ravono, Russia, and received his early training in sculpture and painting at the Kiev and Leningrad Imperial Academies. In 1912 he arrived in Paris to study at the École des Beaux Arts with Emile-Antoine Bourdelle and Auguste Rodin, later becoming an assistant to the master sculptor, Rodin. Blai also studied bronze casting and portrait painting in Munich. In 1927 Blai secured his first teaching position at the Oak Lane Country Day School in Philadelphia. ‘Uncle Boris’ turned his studio into a workshop for the students, with classes in woodworking, clay models for casting and ceramic pieces. The teacher and students even created a fountain and a boat together.

BLAI SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP

WHY MEMBERSHIP AND THE BLAI SOCIETY ARE SO IMPORTANT

Dear LBIF Community, Last year, we grew our membership by 15 percent and successfully launched the Blai Society to commemorate the LBIF’s 70th anniversary. This is great news, because revenue from membership provides the largest source of support for the LBIF’s annual operating budget. This year, our goal is to expand our membership another 15 percent, to 500 families. We need your help to accomplish this. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to join the LBIF. Also, we hope that many of our members, new and renewing, will consider joining the Blai Society. The Blai Society is our highest level of membership. Blai Society Memberships and Business Sponsorships honor the artistic legacy of the LBIF’s founder, Boris Blai, and his vision that the LBIF serves as a beacon for arts and culture on the Jersey Shore. Blai Society Membership ensures that the Foundation’s mission will continue, not only because it provides financial support, but also because it helps brings together a core group of like-minded supporters who move our organization forward. Maintaining a stable fiscal base to support programs and amenities that bring families, neighbors and friends together at the LBIF is essential. Looking to the future, responsible financial stewardship will enable the LBIF to continue to be a lively place to learn, share, explore and enjoy. Growing our membership and launching the Blai Society are two cornerstones of the LBIF’s fiscal foundation. This summer, we will announce a third: a multi-year capital campaign, culminating at our 75th anniversary, which will focus on the expansion of our amenities and ensure the Foundation’s longevity for the next generation. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank all of our members, and give special recognition to our Blai Society Members and Blai Business Sponsors. We are fortunate to have such a vibrant community to care for the LBIF. The Board is grateful to work on your behalf to continue the legacy with which we have been entrusted. Together we are making our community better, now and for generations to come. Sincerely, Todd Strine, LBIF President-Elect

See page 13. In the spring and summer of 1969, Phillips M. Simkin, who taught painting classes at the LBIF, curated an exhibition at the LBIF. He invited a stellar group of artists who were at the forefront of what became known as the Earthworks movement. Many of these Earthworks artists were in the early stages of their illustrious artistic careers at the time that the exhibit at the LBIF was taking place. That exhibit included the following artists: Robert Smithson, Bill Bollinger, Sol LeWitt, Christo, Richard Serra, Rafael Ferrer, Dennis Oppenheim, Hamish Fulton, Philip Glass, Michael Heizer, Peter Hutchinson, Will Insley, Robert Morris, Reiner Ruthenbeck, and Keith Sonnier. In this year’s LandWorks, we have invited a talented group of contemporary artists whose work builds upon the foundations conceptualized by Earthworks artists. 50 years later, this exhibit connects the significance of these early artists to current themes that continue to influence contemporary art and the relationship to sitespecific installation art, environmental subject matter, experimental mediums, and urban landscapes. Many artists place environmentalism at the forefront of their practice, each with unique involvements and interesting ways of addressing these concerns. Works shown will encompass both two and three dimensional work and will be on view in our gallery, on our grounds, and also shown as video presentations.

Participating artists include: Paula Scher, Martha Schwartz, Jane Barthès, Jason deCaires Taylor, Ken Smith, Darren Pearson, Nicole Dextras, Sunil Garg, Lily Reeves, Cristopher Cichocki, Javier Riera, Reuben Wu, David Rubin, Stacy Levy, and J. Meejin Yoon.

Artist: Cristopher Cichocki

WaterWorks Exhibition Exhibit Dates Friday, July 26 - Sunday, August 11 Reception Saturday, July 27, 5:00pm - 7:00pm

WaterWorks will explore the immense impact of water on all life forms, as our most basic component that sustains us, providing pleasure and at times becoming a forceful threat. The exhibit will showcase artists whose work deals with contemporary themes about water in mediums such as painting, photography, ceramics, mixed media, and digital 3D prints. The artwork shown illustrates the many facets of water: the interface of land form (our island) with the ocean, the wetlands, and concepts of everything else that it impacts including organic life in water, the surface images, and the ecological implications of water and the human condition. Participating artists include: Valda Bailey, Allen Bentley, Diane Burko, Sydney Drum, Marguerita Hagan, Stacy Levy, Chris Pfeil, Phil Renato, Rebecca Rutstein, Joseph Sweeney, Manju Shandler, Rachel Talibart, and Jason deCaires Taylor. Express yourself and find your voice through the form and medium of functional pottery. Accentuate that expression through decoration, while embracing play, process and practice. Lisa will cover, in depth, her characteristic soft-slab construction, slip application (wet brush, dry brush, etc.) and finally, decoration including mark-making as well as the use and placement of images on pots. Learn to design darts so that cutting and mending yields personal forms, a fine tool to have in any handbuilder’s or thrower’s practice. Engaging conversations around cultivating creativity are bound to ensue.

THE NATURE TRAIL Life is fragile, especially on a barrier island. As we all know, Long Beach Island is a dynamic system, which is always changing. It is shaped by water - from ocean waves and the ebb and flow of the tidal estuary. As residents of the island, we are its guardians. In such a human-dominated landscape it is important for us to teach our children, our future, about how we impact our environment. At the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences, our work is focused on providing the tools, resources, and information for those who are interested in preserving this delicate ecosystem. To help highlight the fragility of our island and to

build a deep appreciation of the efforts to protect it, we created the Nature Trail. The Nature Trail allows visitors to get up close and personal with our saltmarsh, Barnegat Bay, and its inhabitants. A short walk down the Nature Trail gives visitors a glimpse into the life of ribbed mussels, mummichog, fish and nesting ospreys. We hope that a journey down the Nature Trail will inspire you to make bay-friendly choices that positively affect our island. We are its guardians, and only we can help ensure its survival.

- Ben Wurst, LBIF Science Committee Member & Habitat Program Manager at Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ

Venture along the .4 mile long trail to the osprey blind and Barnegat Bay. Along the meandering trail you will come across a mix of both native and non-native vegetation. Some of the native shrubs and trees that you will see include winged sumac, bayberry, beach plum, serviceberry, black cherry, red maple and red cedar. Some highly invasive species are: common reed and Japanese honeysuckle. Please stay on the trail as poison ivy grows along the edges of it.
