WEFUNK

by gonçalo rodrigues

Hi Alex...Apart from being the brain and builder behind Wefunk Skateboards, you are also an avid skateboarder. Tell us more about the way you entered the skateboarding world. What got you into this? Hi LBZ! Skateboarding has always been a very important part of my life. I bought my first plastic banana board at a fleamarket in the late 70´s. But I think I really started in ´82 when I bought a used 28x10“ G&S Doug Saladino „Pine Design 2“. We built our first quaterpipes from tabletops from broken school tables. Strangely enough a lot of tables broke in our school during that time. I think those years were the best when we spent our summer afternoons building at the quaterpipe and pulling our first kickturns and onewheelers. Pure good clean fun! In my teenage years (especially in the darker part of puberty) skateboarding always was a welcome pressure control valve to release aggression. Nothing is a more healing experience than a good slam and a bleeding knee when you are frustrated about school or your parents. You feel that you are alive and you know where to put your energy and your revolting testosterone.

The addiction for building started after I had lost my first real job as an industrial designer (for lamps). Though I was pretty successful and won several international design awards I was not really happy and deeply depressed after losing my job. I then started a small design bureau and workshop with a friend. Without a good business plan this was a sure ticket to disaster (economically). Just as a sidegig I started wefunk and together with my partner built the first ash/fibreglass decks -- mainly very flexy cruisers. This was 2003.

What motivated you to start with Wefunk? What characteristics had the market at the time, and how did you combined them with the Wefunk style boards? The first boards we built for ourselves cause we were pretty broke but still wanted to have nice boards. I never cared about the market but what I „needed“ to have and what I knew was possible to build. Then we saw slalom foamcore decks like the PocketPistols and I thought I could do as well or maybe better and bought a used vacuum pump from ebay. (I still use this pump.) At this point I had no clue about vacuum lamination, how to build a proper foamcore deck or advanced composite Since when did you start having that little processing. It was learning from try and error. addiction for building skateboards? What kind The skateboard building was a pastime but of boards were you building at the time? became my single mean of (meager) income. LBZ MAG I #06

Being broke, still depressed from losing my job, my son born early, my uncle and grandma died and it became all too much for me. I got seriously sick (on the soul), broke up with the mother of my son and nearly became a bum. The boardbuilding and the feedback of the community was what kept me sane and kept me going. Not giving myself up entirely. Yes, I can say: skateboarding saved my life. (and it took me more than 4 years to get my life back together and repair the damage I had done.)

I ski since age 4 and snowboard since ´86. So I know that the more serious you take your sport the better the equipment you want to use. Compared to skiing, snowboarding or every other sport skateboarding is mostly considered a kids game and the boards we can buy are produced to sell at a toy´s price. When you pay a toy´s price it will buy you -- well -- a toy. (Not to say that you can´t have fun with it.) I wanted to have more. I didn´t want a toy but a board that could be compared to the snowboards I was racing or freeriding. I wanted a lightweight Even looking at the entire market of responsive ride, vibration dampening and a look longboarding, i think it’s fair to say that your that made it clear on the first glance: This is not a company makes “lá creme de lá creme” of all toy! skateboards...The technology and complexity I really got fascinated with the possibilities of your builds, along with its materials and of composite design and soaked up as much designs, always leave everyone stunned! knowledge as I could, reading articles, looking What is the story of your formation, to become into racecar, yachting and aerospace designs. the expert on composite skateboards? This all resulted in the design of the „speedbone“ Wow, it´s nice to get compliments like that. and it´s triple-torsionbox construction in late 2005. Thank you. This was definitely new and it was also new that somebody charged 300+ Euros for „just a deck“. It worked and it was the only thing that could work for me: As a one-man-band I only could build a small number of decks. So my niche was to build few but the best I could -- no matter what the cost or working hours.

#07 I LBZ MAG

We know you were 2 years on the Toyota F1 team, on the composites department. What were the main things you took away from that experience, from what concerns to skateboards? The 2 years at Toyota taught me a lot: Carbon prepreg processing which really differs from wet layups (and not just in the layup process itself). Knowledge about new materials. How to avoid over-engineering. And now most important for me with my far-east production of the Funkster series: A really tight quality management and control.

deck than most decks. You get a deck that is light, tough, stiff yet damp and it won´t get weak (and eventually break) after a few hours in the sun. Of course the materials, the finish and the exclusivity have their price. But when I look on my 20+ working hours and the effort that goes into the Roadmasters I think they are still too cheap.

How and why do you see the market changing in the next years? And where will be Wefunk in the middle of that? We all see that with longboarding (and it´s subcategories) skateboarding is growing again Have you already made some prototypes and diversifying very widely. In the early 80´s with the recent knowledge you gained by when skateboarding was quite underground working with the Toyota F1 team? How do it was all about wide ramp decks. Then they perform differently? streetskating (still on wide decks) grew more My „Roadmaster“ series wouldn´t have popular because the skateparks of the 70´s been possible without learning at Toyota. closed down and it was easy for everybody The vacuum-heatcuring process I use is my to build a small flyramp or find some stairs own invention and as far as I know I´m the to jump in the neighborhood. Then it became only one right now who can press and cure a an unhealthy hype when in the 90´s the focus carbon-prepreg/foamcore deck under vacuum was on streetskating only and you just had at 100+°C without an autoclave oven. The one type of board with just different graphics premium carbon prepreg I use costs more per from 100s of labels. Industry had maneuvered LBZ MAG I #08

itself into a dead end alley. Now after S9 (as the largest SKATEboard producer of the world) sold for 45 mio. US$ to Billabong even the last streetlabel recognized where the market moves. Even those always laughing that longboarders are no „real“ skateboarders have understood now that they missed a big chance. You´ll see hundreds of labels producing generic shapes with just different prints every year. A lot of former streetbrands now remember their roots and reissue 70´s shapes. There will be a HUGE product range to chose from. I think the biggest chance skateboarding has in the next years is diversification and specialization. This is also the chance for small labels like Wefunk to find their niche. There definitely will be a market for hi-end boards for racing and serious sports and a huge market for general purpose „leisure“ boards for cruising and commuting. Wefunk will try to have a stance in both

sectors: Premium handcrafted composite boards made in Germany and highest quality wood/composite boards made in China to offer incredible value and to tackle the competition in the market. =) (A little bit like Volkswagen producing popular quality cars for the people as well as handbuilding the very exclusive Bugatti in France.) Thanks a lot for the interview...all the best from the LBZ family in Portugal! Thank you for the opportunity to share my thought and ideas. Cheers!

Kevin, it is from public knowledge the achievements you had in the sport in the last years, and for that we give you our congratulations. But tell us more about your early days... Longboarding took me by surprise when I was about 13 years old. I was down by the beach and one my older friends had a brand new Landyachtz Chief with blue Kryptos. I got to ride it around the parking lot and I was instantly hooked. I had been riding a street skate for quite awhile but it wasn’t very useful for traveling around the city and going up and down hills. I had always loved getting around on my street skate snapping ollies here and there but the smooth fast roll of a longboard was addictive. I had to have one and so I saved for about 6 months before I could afford it. I ended up getting hit by a car about two weeks after buying it and it was destroyed… Had to spend a long time saving for my next one! Man, my parents were pissed.

there and I really wanted to do well. I just wasn’t experienced enough at racing to really do well, but I ended up 20th and that was fine with me! It was wet / dry and I had never ridden in those conditions. Now, I’m never really stressed at a race. I of course want to do my best, but I realize that a lot of luck is required to win a race these days. Whats your story with Rayne longboards and Colabo?

Rayne Longboards makes the absolute best downhill boards (and skateboards in general) and I love the owner, Graham. He’s been a huge help over the past few years and really helped me believe it what I do. I was “riding” for Landyachtz years past and they wanted to keep me on board by offering me a sponsorship package that was quite healthy for the time. I ended up going with the small guys. Rayne. My first sponsorship offer from them was….. THREE BOARDS. And there was a maybe that followed it. Sticking to my guns really helped me though… Look where I am now! The Killswitch is my love, especially topmost! It’s the board I’ve always wanted. I wanted a board that was positively ergonomic. Something that truly worked in symphony with the skater to make for the best feeling ride out there. There is the special nose and tail concave that holds your feet in like no other board, and the W is very special in the way that you can stand on top of it, but not have it interrupt your pushing. It is perfect in every way for how I ride. The Aera trucks are a 100% Kevin Reimer LBZ MAG I #14

Design, construction, shipping, packing, accounting, everything! Aiiiieeeee! I had ridden everything out there beforehand and I was just never that impressed. Everything else failed to turn, or was restricted somewhere in the turn. I was tired of bent axles and heavy trucks. I wanted something that I could freeride on AND race on… And thus

this is what Aera Trucks is all about. Shredding the gnar. I’ve made quite a few changes. The first design was simple and clean, but the newest is far more complicated. It was a huge process. I also changed manufacturers and that was a big step. After the change to the new design, I’ve changed the materials, the processes, and slightly changed the design several times over to improve, strengthen and lighten the design. Currently, it is the lightest downhill truck on the market and I am planning on lightening it EVEN FURTHER in the new year.

It’s an amazing feeling to reach the “wall” where you cannot go any faster.

What are your expectations towards the future, in term of your involvement in the sport?

EKO SLIDE GLOVES by joão carreira

As it is known amongst all longboarders, the use of your helmet when riding, like the laws written in the constitution, is to be abided by. This is a great sport, and a lifestyle for many, but our safety has to come first. Going fast is a big aspect of the sport, and high speeds are regularly hit, and the use of our hands to maneuver our way down a hill and bust out sick moves require another essential piece of equipment: Slide Gloves. For a downhill longboarder ‘slide gloves’ are key, thus quality and durability are sought after to allow for a smooth and safe ride. Everyone has made their own pair of slide gloves at home at one time or another, either being their first pair of gloves, made out of pure excitement to be able to pull off that first slide, or due to not having the cash to buy a pair from the store. Online there are hundreds of videos showing us how to make a homemade set of slide gloves, allowing everyone that loves this sport to be able to make their own. But as time goes by, inevitably the home made pair get worn and torn. You either make a new set, or go after the more accessible brand name ones. Although the majority end up wearing and tearing as much as the first pair you made at home. Most of the time the most accessible gloves that are out there on the market end up reveling to be of poor quality, deteriorating rapidly. Having experienced this situation, after purchasing a number of gloves, a rider from Porto, Portugal, Eduardo Guimarães, better known to us as ‘EKO,’ who is involved in an industry that produces leather products, decided to start making slide gloves as a hobby for himself and fellow riders. The word started spreading, and soon longboarders from all over Portugal were talking about Eko’s Slide Gloves. The quality and accessible price of the gloves became known to the longboard family and soon enough local skate shops started approaching Eko to place orders.

“Having received good reviews from riders from all over the world was motivator enough to turn this hobby into a dedicated project.”

Currently Eko Slide Gloves are on the market, tested and approved, handmade using natural products, for everyone to use, appreciate and enjoy the quality. One of the proudest moment of the brand was to be able to be present at one of the IGSA’s world cup races, where the gloves were used by many riders. Having received good reviews from riders from all over the world was motivator enough to turn this hobby into a dedicated project, being able to offer a product with his name and approval to the world of longboarding, as a thanks for the impact that longboarding has had, and will continue to have, on his life. eko.eduardog@hotmail.com

FREERIDE BELAGUA

by josé leão

LBZ MAG I #24

For those who practice Downhill Skateboarding, there will always be a time when the roads they ride on a daily basis simply won’t be enough...even in those perfect days, of sunshine, warmth, no wind, they will be aiming for something more. That’s what happened with us. With ease you can find various freerides on our neighbor country, Spain, and this story, tells a bit about our journey to one of them! The Belagua Freeride, in the Pyrenees, which we got to know through the gotokaina.com schedule! Five friends filled with the joy and will to have a great ride got together, and that plus a car and gas was all that was needed for this little trip to take place! Few hours from home and in the top of the Pyrenees Mountains, there were 5 degrees! The look was completely different from our spots back home! As soon as we saw the road itself, that little nervous in the belly started to be felt! As we made our first run thru the hill, we were riding together with guys with a strange comfort on their way down...a few guys have been practicing DH for years, and that was really something new for us! We were very well received by all the people out there, people that are today an extension of our family, guys from Toxicworld and lachicadelacurva.

As everything in life, things are way harder in the beginning! That’s what happened with our firsts descents! Turns are away from ideal line, footbraking out of spot, but as the day goes by, things start to look better, as well as the general mood among everyone! We continue to go down, up and down, in a mad loop! The road covered by hay bales, makes the fear go away, and in its place, a huge amount of adrenalin comes kicking in, shared by all! All over the mountain you could see skateboarders, inliners and lugers. What a view.... From the most experienced to the less ones, the spirit is the same. For 2 days, was a constant up and down the road, great atmosphere in and out of the track! The night spent at the Belagua Freeride was no different than any other event of DH skateboarding! Sharing thoughts, experiences, commenting that run, that overtake... The inscription usually covers meals, a lift van, missing only the costs with the trip and places to sleep overnight. The organization took extreme care about our safety.

THE GLOBE by susana torroais Since my first days on a longboard, I’m always trying to get my girl friends into this amazing way of living, some came, some went away, and always end up myself riding with the boys, don’t get me wrong guys, I love to ride with you all, but having our girls there, is just a completely different feeling. So for 3 years now this has been my goal - Get the portuguese girls longboarding!!! That eventually took my eyes off boarders and got myself keeping connected with all that is happening out there. What’s like in other countries? Is there a lot of girls riding? And you know what? There are!! And these ladies are amazing! Bammm! That just gave an idea for a cool article - this one! haha So I’ve got in touch with several girls around the globe to take a glimpse of their stoke. And you? Care to take a ride and get to know this beautiful selves? HAHA Let us go then!

When and how did you get into longboarding? Gas in New York City is very expensive. Regardless, I still needed to get around from point A point B. Longboarding seemed to be the cheapest way to get this done. One day, I asked myself “How the hell do I stop?” Soon I discovered sliding. Luckily in Brooklyn, every Friday night Team Earthwing gets together to rip a hill in Prospect Park and they took me under their wing. What moves you beside skating? Any music with a beat. (Born Drummer) How is the girl longboard scene back in your country? Honestly, it’s not nearly as big as I’d like it to be. However, there is a crew of girls who slide, rip, and compete with me. I love them like they’re my sisters. What does longboarding mean to you? Longboarding is skateboarding, which means

How is the girl longboard scene back in your country? I have my longboardscene in both sweden and norway. The norwegian girls are on their way up and are soon ripping the scene i think, most of them do downhill. In sweden the hole scene has been down for a couple of years, but there was once this girlteam called asphalt amazons. They actually got IGSA to arrange women competitions at the big events!

Competition or free riding? Both. In norway i love freeriding. There we are allowed to go skate where we want and cars stop and let us pass. We have this amazing mountains that brings you rides that long for 25 minutes on an average speed of 75 km/h. But i love comps. When and how did you get into longboarding? I got into longboarding after a hell of a long time on a skateboard. I was always facinated with skateboards. A few years back I was skating alot of flow bowls and when Winter in Vancouver rolled around, it was wet so I started going to an indoor. Turns out this indoor had a longboard shop connected to it and the rest of the story could be appropriately imagined from there.

When and how did you get into longboarding? My dad got me into skating at a younger age, but I was drawn to cruising rather than tricks. Around 2006, while surfing the internet I found what looked like a giant skateboard, and I had to have it. This was my first introduction into longboarding. It wasn’t until late 2009 that I started really getting into the sport as I came across downhill/freeride. What moves you beside skating? Not to sound cheesy, but my beautiful girlfriend Tina who moved across the world to be with me. She always motivates me to be who I want to be, and to do what I want to do. There is also my family and friends, and their endless amounts of support. This may sound a little mundane, but it’s the truth!

How is the girl longboard scene back in your country? It’s getting there, slowly! When I first started out, I found it difficult to find, or even hear of other girls on longboards. My solution to this was getting my girl mates into the sport, which seemed to work. Throughout New Zealand now, it’s definitely not rare to come across chicks on longboards, but I still get overly excited when I see them. The scene is expanding, and it’s awesome!

Music I can’t help but bounce around to some good ol’ 80s pop. Nothing gets me going like the sound of some fake drums, and the thought of massive hair and shoulder pads.

to me in my last visits to the doctor. I`m also very interested in photography and lately I`m hearing the call of video filming. I hear voices whispering “take your camera and film something” “go ahead”. Obviously this is due to Juan Rayos (sk8cinema) and Alberto Alepuz (Perropro), their videos are so amazing that I feel like trying to record. Cooking is other of my hobbies, you should taste my Lasagna, mmmm. I find really enjoyable fixing things, I must say I have a small Mc Gibber inside. I love looking for mushrooms, blueberries, figs... or anything you can eat. I used to love driving my car but since I ride my longboard my mind is in longboard mode, so while I drive I look for possible spots to shred them with my longboard. Isn’t longboarding the best way to move from one place to another? How is the girl longboard scene in your country? The girl longboard scene in Spain in growing healthy. Its happening all around the world. It’s surprising the huge number of girls who are starting to practice longboarding, a good example of this is LGC (Longboard Girls Crew) in Facebook. I’m proud of having taken part in the filming of the LGC video by Juan Rayos, it was an incredible and unforgettable experience. We had the chance of showing to everyone that longboarding it’s not just a male sport and show how fun can it be, which we did. Mission accomplished!! I’m used to meet more male longboarders but I always tell them to bring their girlfriends, I’m sure they will love the sport. What does longboarding means to you? Longboarding is all about fun “girls just wanna have fun”. Always I came back from riding there’s a huge smile in my face and sometimes some bruisings in my body but with the smile yet in my face. I’m not sure what does longboarding means to me, I just can think about that SMILE. Favourite disciplines Sliding, carving, dancing… all the styles. LBZ MAG I #44

What I most like is going around the city with my long and if it is in company of other longboarders, much better. One year ago I used to ride completely alone here in Zaragoza but now we are “longboarder family” who communicates through our Facebook Profile (Longboard Zaragoza). Nearly everyday someone join us, and we are hungry of doing interesting things and off course hungry of asphalt. Competition or freeride? Both of them, I love the atmosphere of the competitions, that mixture of skate and good vibrations between competitors, makes me crazy and full of energy. I also enjoy hugely riding with out a purpose, just riding, any day and at any of the incredible spots in Zaragoza. I also love traveling with the car full of longboards (definitely I need a van) to other cities to meet their locals and ride different spots. Music This one is easy, I like all kind of music. I love music and think there is a hit song for all the music styles. Sponsors lachicadelacurva, a spanish longboard company with a good variety of longboards for all the disciplines and Ludwig Van, a textile brand from Argentina with amazing designs. A message to all the girls... For those who ride “keep having fun with all the good feelings while you longboard” and for those who feel attracted to longboarding “just try, don’t be afraid neither be shy, you’re gonna like it. That’s for granted”. Just to finish I will like to thank Longboarderz and specially Susana for giving me this opportunity. Thanks a lot!! Keep riding!!! ;)

Soon we will realize the first Longboard Games, already announced, but what is it? It´s a competition that will cover various aspects of longboard, has everything to do with versatility, but not only, also with camaraderie and team spirit. A competition where the will to learn but also to teach can be essential in leading to victory. Soon all the details, stay tuned.

LBZ MAG I #52

In the beginning of Autumn, as to mark “la reentré” of the season, the 3rd Annual Longboarderz Meeting took place, once again in Belas. We were presented with a clear and translucid sky, some heat, and great overall environment. Around 12am, the firsts chords were being heard. The music was coming from the Classics Rad Shop van, and by that time, the Rutilva Crew, the Portuguese representative of Pro-Tec, was already setting their tent. By this time, a tender feeling of a festival mood was starting to be felt. Swap of impressions, informations and boards experimentation. We finally see in real life that board we usually see on our pc monitor, we feel the different concaves, we are aware of its true length and weight, discuss the pros/cons of wheels. Critics and compliments are spoken, we worship our sport, while Redbull makes an appearance distributing fresh cans! This was the great opportunity for the launch of our first Longboarderz Workshop, and what a surprise it was! The attendance was much more than the best of our hopes, which is a sign that there are a lot of new people interested in learning a bit more or developing their technique. It was a very pleasant day that made friendships stronger. Everyone trashed some descents, slides or cones, but essentially its biggest value was the overall brotherhood and reunion of the Portuguese Longboard Family spread around the country.
