Some of you know that I am an avid walker/hiker. It is a joy to be out on a trail in the woods, prairie, bluffs and along a stream or river or even on the greenway/sidewalk in my neighborhood and if I just have to on the treadmill, but only during very inclement days. There are tremendous benefits to walking, that I often tell people “begin and commit to 20 minutes per day and see where that takes you. If you can get to 30 minutes that is perfect, and if you can do longer, all the better”. Below are some of the Primary Benefits that I’ve discovered along the way: Walking will improve your mood and believe or not, it is FUN. Research indicates that walking can lift your spirts and reinvigorate you. Regular walking actually modifies your nervous system so much that you’ll experience a decrease in anger and hostility, according to physicians and several studies conducted. If that walk can include greenery and/or soaking in sunlight it is even compounded. It will help you burn calories and maintain a healthy weight. Walking is a way to obtain and maintain a healthy weight. Regular walking can help reduce belly fat, as a result, improve your body’s response to insulin. If you want to increase your calorie burn, then when walking outside, plan a route that includes hills, alternate between speed walking and a slower pace, and challenge yourself to walk the same routes on different days to see if you can beat your previous times. A good rule of thumb that has been around a while now, but it’s also been proven to be quite effective, is hitting at minimum 10,000 steps a day. I typically hit around 15,000 steps per day or over 100,000 steps per week and have done so for over 2 years. This is not in any way bragging or puffing myself up but to show that if I can do it at my stage in life, you can do it as well. Another benefit is that daily walking and setting step goals is that it can increase metabolism by burning extra calories and by preventing muscle loss, which is particularly important as we get older.

Walking can reduce your risk of chronic diseases. The American Diabetes Association highly recommends walking to lower blood sugar levels and your overall risk of diabetes. Some research even shows that for every 1,000 daily steps you take, you could lower your systolic blood pressure by .45 points. That means if you clock in 10,000 daily steps, your systolic blood pressure is likely to be 2.25 points lower than someone else who walks only 5,000 daily steps. One of the most cited studies on walking and health, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, found that those who walked enough to meet physical activity guidelines had a 30% lower risk of cardiovascular events (like heart attack or stroke) compared with those who did not walk regularly. OTHER BENEFITS: Besides improving your mood, being fun; maintaining a healthy weight and reducing chronic disease, there are even more benefits to walking. • It can help you live longer. • Walking boosts brainpower. • It can help alleviate joint pain. • Can even delay the onset of varicose veins and other venous system issues. • It may stimulate your digestive system. • Walking enhances creativity. • It can also improve your sleep. • Walking will kick start your immune system. • Other goals will seem more reachable when you have a walking routine. So my strong recommendation: get outside and walk in one of Leander’s parks, trails, greenways or even your neighborhood sidewalk system and live your best possible life!

To meet a growing public demand for recreation activities, the City of Leander has leased a 14,400-square-foot facility to offer expanded Parks and Recreation Department programs. At its next regular meeting on Thursday, March 17, 2022, Leander City Council approved “Leander Activity Center” as the official name.
