YEAR 1 MY WELLBEING JOURNAL LEARNING MORE ABOUT ME Dear parents and teachers, children will need your support by you explaining and offering direction for the evidence-based activities in this journal. The intention is for children to develop more self-awareness so that they can self-regulate how they think, act and feel.

FRIENDSHIPS WEEKS These occur throughout the journal every 12 weeks. Encourage the children to draw or describe how they could use one of the four strengths, gratitude, teamwork, kindness and leadership to build friendships with classmates and other students. Make a Strengths Wall in the classroom for children to draw or describe things that they or classmates did to show the strength. Also, at home, encourage families to make a Strengths Wall on the fridge, to participate as well.

WHAT I DO WELL: STRENGTHS WORD SEARCH This Lesson: Wellbeing Learning Intention is for children to practise using the language of strengths by doing the word search. As a class look for three words together and share the strategy of looking for the most uncommon letter in a word first, then look at letters around it to find the word.

MY FEELINGS WARNING SIGNS This Lesson: Wellbeing Learning Intention is for children to recognise the signs their bodies send them when they are feeling unsafe or unhappy. A class brainstorm is a fun way to get the class thinking about these warning signs. They can include how their shoulders, tummy, hands and face feel. Ask children to draw or describe where they feel these signs on each part of the outline of their body below. My feelings warning signs are...

ME CALMING MYSELF DOWN This Lesson: Wellbeing Learning Intention is for children to explore things that they can do to calm themselves down when they feel unsafe or unhappy, and who can help them. A class brainstorm is a fun way to get the class thinking about ways to settle themselves. These can include colouring in, having a cuddle, sharing with one of their Circle of Safety, playing with a pet, and other gentle activities. Ask children to share two ways that they can or do calm themselves down. They can write, draw, stick in pictures or do something else to explain their thoughts. Me calming myself down 1

ME BEING KIND This Lesson: Wellbeing Learning Intention is for children to learn about some simple things that they can do every day to be kind to their families, friends classmates and themselves. Ask students to circle the ones that they do often, and put a square around those that they will try to do more. As a class brainstorm four more kind things for the bottom boxes. Make up my bed every morning.

Smile at and say “hello” to people I meet.

Draw a picture of my family and give it to them.

Think of three good things that happen every day.

Say “Hi!” to someone I don’t normally talk to.

Put my toys away every night.

Be a good sport when playing games in the playground.

Play with someone I don’t usually play with.

Give my family plenty of hugs and cuddles.

Make a card thanking someone for all they do for me.

Read a funny book with my family.

Say hello to the person with the stop sign at the crossing.

Pick up rubbish at school and at home.

Be kind to my body by drinking water.

Help with a job at home without being asked.

Tell someone, “well done!”
